Book Description
Gardeners throughout the world love these majestic tall flowers, but few are aware of the many colors and forms that are now available with the burst of new cultivars, several of which have been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Not just blue, but red, pink, violet, yellow, and white forms exist to entice gardeners. Expert authors bring all their expertise and enthusiasm to this book, which is a much-awaited publication on a plant that offers much to the gardener. Introducing both wild and cultivated delphiniums and discussing breeding and the use of the flowers in the garden, the book also covers cultivation and propagation and talks about the pests and diseases that affect delphiniums.

Loved it without reservation.......2007-07-08
Every single minute I spent with this book was delightful. The humor was so fresh, so original, that not a line felt forced. The images were all fresh, the metaphors original, and the characters wonderful. The narrator, Jess, was so real and alive that I was convinced that author and character were one and the same.
It's a about a woman whose stinking, lying, no-good cheating husband just ups one morning and walks out on her, leaving her with two children, a pen full of chickens and no job.
I went to sleep last night with just one chapter to go, and discovered that I was so upset about the way her husband was treating her that I had trouble sleeping. But she weathered her difficulties with such huge aplomb and heart and humor that I almost stood on the bed and cheered when she had the happy ending coming to her.

Never judge a book by its cover.......2007-07-06
A subtle and poignant story of a young woman who senses that there are creative aspects of her soul that are either not there or need to be nurtured. Mark Smith creates an intelligently nuanced portrait of this women who takes up the task of searching, through friendships and the art of living for her inner potential. The friendships are ultimately unfulfilling and the art of living she discovers will be soon cut short.
From beginning to end Mr. Smith unfolds a microcosm with his prose that is perfect in both tone and pace. A wise and satisfying book.

This is the 7th edition of the very popular Hidden Places of Yorkshire and has been completely redesigned to include a new cover and new page layouts. The book is printed in full colour and includes detailed directional maps, eye catching photographs and is packed with places to eat, drink and stay.Yorkshire is truly a county packed with diversity. In the northwest are the picturesque Dales with its varied scenery of peat moorland, green pastureland and scattered woods intersected by the numerous streams and rivers. To the northeast are the imposing Yorkshire Moors, the rich agricultural Vale of York, the chalky hills of the Wolds and the dramatic storm-tossed coastline. To the south are the industrial and commercial cities and towns, which have made such a major contribution to our industrial and cultural heritage

Pleasant Guide.......2005-10-12
I haven't traveled to Yorkshire since buying this guide, so I haven't had a chance to verify all the info for myself, but it is a pleasant, easy-to-read guide. I'm bothered by the number of typos in it, as well as that much of the information is very vague (mentioning sites without maps or directions for finding them), but I do feel it's helping me plan my itinerary. Word of warning: I bought this as well as Hidden Inns of Yorkshire, and the content is largely duplicative. I'd recommend one or the other - not both.

Book Description
This is the 5th edition of Hidden Places guides covering the largest county in England and is printed in full color. Yorkshire is truly a county packed with diversity. To the south are the industrial and commercial cities and towns, which have made such a major contribution to Britain's industrial and cultural heritage.
Previous editions have sold very well and were well received by readers - "I think your book is wonderful. I have bought two already for other people. I found it really useful when we went to Yorkshire. You seem to pick out the right places to include." - a reader from Lymm, Cheshire; "May I congratulate you on your series of books on the Hidden Places. Although I was under the impression that I knew Yorkshire pretty well, I have found many new and interesting snippets in the Yorkshire and Humberside edition." - a reader in Malton, and by the media - "A fascinating tourist guide" - Yorkshire Regional Newspapers. The book is written in an attractive narrative style and is packed with information and colored photographs covering the more secluded and little known venues for food, accommodation and places of interest as well as the more enduring attractions of the county. The cover features eye-catching photographs of the waterfall at Ingleton, a view of the Yorkshire Dales and the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey.?

COCTEAU: his life in words.......2004-09-25
To know Jean Cocteau, visit the chapels, tombs & monuments he left for posterity, or watch his films. If you can't, read this book.
Terrific Biography.......2004-05-15
I originally picked this book up at the library and liked it so much I bought two copies: One for myself and one for a friend. This is a wonderful biography of one of the most influential men of the Arts in France. Since I don't live in France, or Paris to be exact since his influence would have been felt there the most, I don't know if forty years after his death he still influences the Arts or not. However, he was a force to be reckoned with during his lifetime and this bio gives the reader a great sense of what Paris was like from the late 1800's to the early 1960's. Fascinating.
The French creative force.......2003-01-07
Cocteau seems to turn up in most unusual places. First he is praised by no less a figure than Edith Wharton, then he is hobnobbing with Proust, then off with Picasso, Diagalev, Stravinsky, and the Ballets Russes set, finally he is a film maker of the live action film of Beauty and the Beast. In between his life was filled with more living than should be allowed by law. Steegmuller's biography does justice to this life and probably will remain the definative text on the subject.

The Holy Terrors (Les Enfants Terribles)
ASIN: 0670892580
Release Date: 2001-11-12 |
Book Description
French director, poet, novelist, dramatist, and illustrator Jean Cocteau is known for being one of the most versatile and diversely talented artists of the twentieth century. Testament of Orpheus is a photographic journal and tribute to Cocteau's final film of the same name. Lucien Clergue was a close friend of Cocteau's and a photographer on the set of the film. He captures the essential scenes and symbols from the movie and provides a moving portrait of the poet as well as an intriguing elaboration on Cocteau's cinema as well as on surrealism and the Myth of Orpheus.

Like a twisted "Dangerous Liaisons".......2000-12-28
Elisabeth and Paul, siblings, are orphaned in adolescence and build a private, closed world for themselves that slowly isolates them in their own brand of madness. When Elisabeth discovers that Paul is falling in love with a girl named Agatha (who reminds him of his childhood love Dargelos), she manipulates Gérard (who's in love with Elisabeth) into marrying Agatha. Paul tries to kill himself and confesses to Agatha, and the two piece together Elisabeth's treachery, leading to the story's final, implosive end. Cocteau's novel is magnificent, and wait until you see the movie based on this...

a caveat.......2007-05-27
regardless of its presentation, this is among his most amazing works. I am not familiar with this edition, so... can someone tell me if the illustrations are included during the text or do they follow the text at the end. the former is preferred. thankyou.
Opium is one of the most important books I have read........1999-04-27
Cocteau is a genius. In Opium, Diary of a Cure, he recounts the experience of his recovery from opium addiction in 1929. He gives an account that sometimes touches on his moment to moment experiences of drug withdrawal, sometimes remarks on his current thoughts about other people and things in his world. Since he lived in the world of avante-garde French culture, his comments include Picasso or Satie. His descriptions and criticisms include references to his own works or to the climate of the period and offer a stunning look at his own thoughts in this extraordinary moment.

Enfant Essays.......2002-09-12
Cocteau will not appeal to thinkers who admire clarity and concise thinking. He is not a professional thinker one might say. he prides himself on his amateur standing and will appeal to others who find the word amateur appealing. He is a dilettante, granted he is the grandest of the dilettantes but a dilettante nonetheless. His rather slender examinations of different topics makes one realize he is driven exclusively by his own ego whose highest value is sensibility, namely his own, so the essays strike one as self celebrations more than serious investigations. This will interest those who love Cocteaus every word and gesture but there is not really that much in his writing to recommend him to a wide readership. he can be very amusing and occasionally you will find an insight that is striking and completely original but not that often. Mostly this is someone who writes in a comfy chair and concocts little sketches which remain rather sketchy albeit charming much of the time. In his time there was something rebellious about being defiantly amateur but there are limits to what one can accomplish when ones wayward instincts remain ones only driving force. That and the continual refining of sensibility. He remains a kind of enfant terrible and when he got older he was a much mellowed enfant terrible. He is an important figure that everyone interested in any or all the art forms must respect because he certainly made a contribution to nearly every form there is but these essays are not for rigorous thinkers. There is a vagueness in everything Cocteau did that makes it seem that maybe this was the key to his sensibility. I would recommend the book Les Enfant Terribles over this, there is literary power in that. These essays just leave you feeling hungry they are so slight.

Book Description
Count d'Orgel is handsome, charming, and carefree, a model of cool aristocratic aplomb. His wife, the Countess, is beautiful and pure and loves her husband more than anything in the world. But from the moment the d'Orgels meet and befriend the clever young François de Séryeuse backstage at the circus, all three of these supremely civilized and witty people are caught up in an ever more intricate and seductive dance of deception and self-deception. At Count d'Orgel's masquerade ball, the real disguises are those of the human heart.
Completed just before Raymond Radiguet's death at the age of twenty, Count d'Orgel's Ball is a love story that is as disturbing as it is delicious.
