4 out of 5 stars for the grass enthousiast.......2007-07-18

This book has excellent detailed drawings of the whole plant, and the bloom or seed head. The descriptions of the grasses are thorough and include fair-excellent ratings on wildlife and or cattle grazing. For a native grass enthousiast or a rancher, this book is excellent.

Many grasses have similar visual attributes, though. For the average person who has no previous knowledge of grasses and no alternate source with actual photos, this resource could be confusing by itself.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Couple of Days in Washington, DC.......2003-09-25

Like the other Lonely Planet Condensed books this one is a day pack must have. It's small enough to be able to stick in a pack or a back pocket but is filled to the brim with useful information on what to see in DC, where to eat, how to get there (excellent maps including details on the Metro), and where to lay your head at the end of the day. We picked this up on a whim but found that it helped us narrow down the best sights and points of interest for Washington, DC when we only had a few days to stay. Well worth the very reasonable price and you'll have no trouble finding the highlights and the hidden treasures of the capital.

          Book Description

Lillian Hellman's memoirs are as notable for what they omit as for what they reveal. In An Unfinished Woman (1969), she notes that, although she kept an extensive diary of her Moscow trip in the winter of 1944-45, "No where is there a record of . . . how close I felt then and now to a State Department career man whose future, seven or eight years later, went down the drain for no reason except the brutal cowardice of his colleagues under the hammering of Joe McCarthy."

The State Department career man is John Fremont Melby, principal author of the government's China White Paper of 1949. Hellman and Melby met in Russia, fell in love, talked often of marriage, and, during their separations over the next thirty years, wrote each other voluminously. When Hellman appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee in the famous confrontation of May 21, 1952, she was anxious to protect not the Hollywood leftists she had known but Melby and Averell Harriman, the former American ambassador to Russia under whose roof she began her affair with Melby.

The Cold War Romance of Lillian Hellman and John Melby is the story of their affair, certainly one of the most intense of Hellman's life. It is also the story of Hellman's role in Melby's seven Loyalty-Security hearings, extending over eighteen months. The transcripts of these hearings, divulged here for the first time, reveal far more about her politics than does her brief appearance before the HUAC. Melby was fired from the State Department in 1953 by John Foster Dulles because of his affair with Hellman and because he would not repudiate her. It was a pure case of "guilt by association."

This is a tale of politics, personalities, and passion. Based on Hellman's and Melby's letters, FBI and Passport Office files, transcripts of Melby's hearings, and the files of Hellman's lawyer, Joseph Rauh, this book establishes that Hellman's association with the Communist party was fleeting. But more importantly, it is a compelling account of a love affair that was aborted and then revived by the Cold War.

          5 out of 5 stars More little-known Post-WWII and Cold War History..........1999-02-04

Robert Newman not only leads up to his highly praised history of the Owen Lattimore story and the influence of the "China Lobby" with this account, but gives much denied credit as well to the history of the left which had been censored, denied, and castigated... Included is a little-known quote from Lillian Hellman in her opening remarks to the Waldorf Peace Conference in 1949, which she co-organized. The Waldorf Conference was a credit to the post-WWII anticolonialist peace movement fueled by the activism of the radicalism of the 30s. This social/political/cultural movement included among others Hellman and W.E.B. DuBois, who founded the Peace Information Center in 1950 and circulated the Stockholm Peace Petition at a time when the Soviet Union was allegedly running a "peace offensive" and at a time when anyone who promoted peace or who criticized U.S. policy must therefore be viewed as being an agent of a foreign govt. in the McCarthy hysteria. Not only was anyone associated with those promoting peace at risk of suspicion, but also anyone who showed any independent thinking regarding foreign policy, no matter how extensive the institutional experience (as in Melby's case) or how well-founded the logic. This was the case with John Melby, chief editor of the China White Paper which acknowledged the inevitable failure of the KMT and the subsequent "loss of China." Just as anyone associated with the Waldorf Conference was eventually brought before HUAC and/or blacklisted, so anyone associated with authorship of the China White Paper was subjected to loyalty security board hearings and their careers ruined, but for different cause. The irony of this book is that it illustrates how the relationship of Melby and Hellman resulted in a collision of these two very different worlds of thought, intellectual culture, career, and experience.

            Product Description

Latham's book stands out as a learned and sharply analytical study of the Communist activity in the federal government from the beginning of the 1930s to the sudden demise of McCarthyism with the condemnation of the Wisconsin Senator by the Senate for unsenatorial conduct on December 2, 1954. Latham does not assert that McCarthyism was nothing more than a narrowly political phenomenon but he does make a very convincing argument for the proposition that it was a political phenomenon, and that as such it was largely an agent of fundamentalist conservatism, long frustrated in its search for power. The book challenges the tiresome "status revolution" explanations, and argues that the roots of this curious phenomenon were essentially political. McCarthy was the agent of a powerful and traditional faction within the Republication party, clinging to a potpourri of nineteenth-century virtues Latham terms "fundamental conservatism". Latham's work principally assesses the problem of Communist influence and power at the highest governmental levels and seeks to explain the dramatic importance of the Communist question in the early 1950s, an importance which, in Latham's judgment, it never deserved.

                    5 out of 5 stars Insightful Book.......2007-05-15

As a school teacher, I found a wonderful use for this book in my classroom. My 6th grade history class studies the Holocaust and was participating in the Houston Holocaust Museum's Butterfly Project. This book helped my students understand some of the feelings and problems faced by children housed at Terezin Concentration Camp during WWII.

                    5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!.......2007-03-08

It is a historical masterpiece of creative resistance during a horrible period when part of mankind became monsters and trough this book we can see how children and adolescents lived with sensitivity and hope!

5 out of 5 stars Art Commemorating an Event.......2006-11-10

I thought this book was very nicely done with regard to graphics and written elements. It really gives you an insight into how people deal with tragedies in their lives, and the process they take to rebuild them. Very inspirational, as well as informative.

                    1 out of 5 stars Why I Didn't Like This Book.......2006-05-31

For some people, this book might have been great, but I found it rather boring. I just felt that I really didn't connect with the book like I do with so many others. Hey, I'm not trying to make it sound bad, it's just that this book might not be too exciting (especially when you have to write about it!)

5 out of 5 stars An emotional fantastic history lesson.......2005-11-24

I never saw another butterfly is an incredible collection drawings and poems written by children and adolescents in the Terezin concentration camp. The first hand emotional reactions to the torture and horror of the Holocaust is expressed in this book. This is a fantastic history lesson for young readers as well as adults to the horrifying Holocaust experience. The story of the children's teacher Friedl Dicer-Brandeis is incredible, as they define her as a gentle and kind woman, who ironically studied art in Germany. I highly recommend this book for any library and it is a must have for Language Arts and History teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Simply an amazing play..........2003-11-21

I was lucky enough to perform this play in a competition in 1999. I was Raja. It has inspired me to no end! I have been told by people who saw our competition just how amazing this play is. And it's true. It will move you to tears, knowing that what is being said, are real words written by real people who lived this horrible life forced upon them. Kudos to the playwright!

                    5 out of 5 stars Since 1981..........2003-10-24

I performed in this play in Northeastern Iowa (of all places!) when I was just 8 years old, and have repeatedly told people over the course of my life how moving the play is, and how it affected me as a child. My mother was also in the play and was careful to explain to me how important the story was. In college I searched in vain for a copy of this play to perform a scene for an acting class. I guess my review is this - after 22 years this play is still with me.

5 out of 5 stars I could go on and on............2003-05-08

This play is a wonderful thing. It really opened my eyes as to what happened to these poor children. Our audience was silent when we finished with opening night (last night) and I was crying. I have never experienced anything like it. I have never been so moved by words and actions. This play has changed me in a subtle way, and I thank my director for choosing it. To play someone who actually lived is a very moving experience, especially when you know what they went through in order to have a play written about them and many books too. I love this play, and will never forget the wonderful experience I've had.

5 out of 5 stars Moving, terribly honest, a beautiful story!.......2002-02-15

I was one of the lucky few in a theater class to be able to perform this play. I can't begin to explain how touched I was by the children and there love of life. We had a Holocaust survivor come and see the play. She, above all other people, could appreciate this play for its amazing ability to bring the stories of those children to life. Thank you Celeste Raspanti!

5 out of 5 stars I Never Saw Another Butterfly performance.......2001-07-27

We've been rehersing this play for about a month and a half now and are performing it tomorrow! I love the story but I would recommend that if you are involved that you do some research of you didn't know much like me. Schindler's list is helpful. I play Honza, who is a positive aspect of the play but the part is still depressing. It really does depend on how you look at it. You either focus on the horrible things that happened, and how many people died, or the positives - that people actually survived to tell the story. It's quite hard for me as I'm playing Honza in 2(we're only doing 2) performances and there are 2 Raja's (or Rayas). Please if you are in this play just appreciate the seriousness of the issue before you start acting.

                                  Product Description

A total of 15,000 children under the age of 15 passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp between the years 1942 and 1944. Of these, around 100 came back. Here in this heartbreaking combination of word and image, we see reflected not only the daily misery of these uprooted children, but a degree of courage and optimism that is their triumph. The drawings and poems are all that is left of these children; their ashes have long since sifted across the fields around Oswiecim. Of those who signed their names to their work, it has been possible to find out a few facts: the year and place of their birth, the number of their transport to Terezin and to Oswiecim, and then the year of their death. The documents collected in this publication have been chosen from the archives of the State Jewish Museum in Prague. These drawings and poems speak to us, a reminder of truth and hope. 80 pages, illustrated endpapers, ribbon place marker.
