Customer Reviews:
Excellent hiking and wildflower resource.......2000-10-28
As a botanist who loves hiking and flowers, I was thrilled to get the chance to "field test" this wonderful guide to Colorado's high mountains. It is organized by elevation so you can follow spring up higher as summer progresses. It clearly states the hike length, the terrain, the location, gives directions AND best of all - lists what flowers you will see! I found this book to be an extraordinary guide to the region and it helped me tailor my vacation and plan my hikes. The photos of the mountain scenery were very good and the close ups of the flowers were terrific. I think I actually bumped into the author on a hike (I recognized her from the photo in the back!). Terrific book!
Book Description
A comprehensive field guide to the unique and diverse flora of the canyonlands region of the southwestern U.S. Four-corners area.
Customer Reviews:
A delight to find.......2005-08-01
I was delighted to find this book in the Hovenweep National Monument visitor centre bookstore. I had already photographed the wild flowers of Arches, Canyonlands and Colorado for my website. Now I could identify them. The book organises the flowers by colour which is good for an amateur like me. Now, I have to admit that I could not identify all the species I photographed, but I was pleased when I could. A big thank you to Damian Fagan for this book, I thought I might be a little bit too excentric hunting for new wild flowers in Canyondlands and Arches National Parks, even worse photographing wild flowers during my lunch hour while working in Colorado.
Absolutely delightful.......2000-06-22
The Colorado Plateau country of southern Utah, western Colorado, and northern Arizona is justifiably famous for its magnificent scenery, but the stunning wildflowers are less widely appreciated. Fagan's "Canyon Country Wildflowers" is the best guide to these treasures that I've yet seen. The photographs are absolutely top-notch (sometimes I browse the guide, just daydreaming...), often showing the entire plant in its natural habitat. Likewise, the collection is relatively complete. Flowers are organized by colors and typically easy to find. To top it off, the book is relatively compact and durable in the field. Nowadays, I don't head south without it. -William Adair, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Utah State University

Book Description
This enchanting photo journal is the first pictorial book on Himalayan flowers covering the whole area from Pakistan and northwestern India through Tibet and Nepal to Bhutan. Large photos of diminutive flowers set against the backdrop of the large-scale surroundings of the Himalaya are supplemented by brief captions blending technical data from the author's field notes with personal observations. The result is a book that is as informative as it is inspiring.

Awesome.......2003-11-10
This book contains the fruits of ten years of trekking in Nepal at high altitudes, in the most inhospitable terrain, during the monsoon to photograph the flowers of the region in their natural environment. This has to be done during the monsoon, when rain and sleet makes streams impassable and mist shrouds the mountains because that's the only time the flowers bloom. And what flowers they are. Their adaptation to the rocky cold world is often quite amazing. I expected to find pictures of primulas, rhododendrons, meconopsis - and these are all here. The cover shows a meconopsis that just about knocked my socks off. But there are other flowers too, some of which create a nice warm tent to encourage pollinators to visit. These and other adaptations are part of the fascination of this book.
You'll find in the book 108 beautiful flower photographs, often taken while lying on the wet stony ground after a wait of hours or days for the rains to let up and the sun to shine. Each picture is accompanied by brief field notes about the plant and they are arranged in taxonomic order. Why are there 108 photographs? Because that is the number of beads on a Tibetan rosary. The photographers sense of this being a spiritual quest as well as a scientific quest is demonstrated in the precision and beauty of the photographs.
Some of the flowers are familiar to us. There's a bergenia and a geranium not unlike those in my garden. But then there's a relative of the rhubarb that looks like a stack of cream puffs and can grow up to six feet tall. Inside the cream puffs the temperature is five degrees warmer than the inside - certainly attractive to pollinators in the Himalayan cold.
Toshio Yoshida has given us a rare treat in this book, giving readers vivid images of plants we may never see against a backdrop of the glaciers and peaks of the Himalayan mountains. His deep understanding of the place and the environment and his synthesis of the complexities of spiritual, artistic and scientific approaches has resulted in a book that can be appreciated on many levels.
A beautifully presented compilation of natural photography.......2003-05-17
Portraits Of Himalayan Flowers by Toshio Yoshida (botanical photographer, amateur botanist, and Associate Researcher at the University Museum of the University of Tokyo) is a beautifully presented compilation of natural photography and the compilation of ten years of travel. 108 gorgeous color pictures showcase the wondrous beauty of plants that correspond to the 108 beads of the Tibetan Buddhist rosary. Each full-page photograph includes a brief caption about the flower, as well as a knowing introduction combined to create a highly recommended and brilliantly presented work. Portraits Of Himalayan Flowers is an enthusiastically recommended addition to any personal, professional, or community library Gardening Shelf or Horticultural Studies collection.
Outstanding photography! Colorful flowers!.......2002-10-15
This is an incredibly interesting book full of photographs showing the plants in their native environment. Toshio Yoshida did a fantastic job with all 108 full color photographs that are in the book.
By getting down on the ground and looking up at the plants you will get to see a viewpoint that is rarely offered in the world of plant photography.
Each photo caption contains the botanical name of the species as well as a wonderful description. While I'm not a big fan of photography books, the photos in this book definitely made me sit up and take notice.
There are plants in there that I had never seen before which were so unusual that they made me want to find out more about them. If you like unusual plants that are brightly colored or plant photographs that are above the average then you will want to acquire this book for your library.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent field guide.......2002-03-08
As one who has traveled, and will continue to travel and explore, the Colorado Plateau extensively, I find all of Mr. Baars' works both useful and entertaining. This one is no different. Mr. Baars has an excellent grasp of the geological complexities of this wonderful area and shares his enthusiasm and keen insights well. I would like to see more photography, especially color, because I believe it is important to visualize an area before seeing it in real life, if for no other reason than to enhance photographic opportunities. Even in this minor absence, the book is a great read, and heartily recommended for any student of the Plateau.
Excellent introduction to the geology of SE Utah.......1998-11-05
This book is definately worth the money. I bought it while at Arches N.P. because I was amazed by the rock formations of the area. It was so varying that I wanted to learn more. This book definately helped me to understand in laymans terms. This book is definately for the novice. It will make you want to study the subject even more.

inspiration, please.......2002-08-01
Typical Lonely Planet in that it gives you all the facts, but very little inspiration. Basically for those who have already made up their mind and know exactly where they are going. That said the guide is incredibly detailed, it certainly doesn't leave out much of the nitty gritty kind. Then again, you don`t really need all this info as there are outfitters in Pakistan (forget the US/UK ones) that will take care of all the logistics for you at a price you can't beat, not even doing it all yourself.
Book Description
Remote and spectacular, the icy peaks and vast glaciers of northern Pakistan offer unparalleled opportunities for adventure. Whether you're a novice trekker or a seasoned explorer, let our expert authors guide you on the journey of a lifetime.

Book Description
Statistics say most kids know less geography than ever - don't let that apply to your students! Start by making sure kids know the main places & geographic features in their own state. Give them activities that pretend they are taking a cross-state bike tour, using free football game passes, jogging through the state, etc. - & they'll find their way around in a hurry! Geography activities include info on Nevada counties, rivers, museums, historic places, sites of interest, colleges, bordering states, climate, topography, crops and more, all ready to reproduce! Approximately 30 activities and 200 geography-related places and facts are covered. Students work alone or in groups and use maps, reference books or resource people to complete challenging riddles, matching games, word searches, fill-in lists, scavenger hunts, and completion exercises that reinforce learning, sharpen research skills, and provide a lively introduction to Nevada. Free teacher's guide gives specific suggestions and instructions on how to get max educational value from this book. Geography is critical - make learning it fun!
Book Description
Full-page reproductions of drawings from the early 15th century to the end of the 18th century, all beautifully reproduced: Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Dürer, Fragonard, Urs Graf, Wouwerman, many others. First-rate browsing book, model book for artists.
Customer Reviews:
Nope, not this book.......2003-03-13
If you've got even a couple art/drawing books in your collection, you probably already have the best examples contained here (and they're probably reproduced better in your art books). I take drawing seriously so I'm always on the hunt for meaty art books and this one didn't deliver. While I often disagreed with what the author considers a "masterpiece" (apparently anything old--but I'll let that be a subjective thing) probably the biggest problem is the poor reproduction quality. It's refreshing to find an art book that doesn't cost a fortune, but when the texture and gesture of line can't be seen in the drawing--well, is it any wonder so many of them just lie there looking dead? Some of the drawings here are reproduced so badly they are almost completely black, others so light they are just barely tones on the page.
Serious drawing books can be pricey but they can often be found at a good price if you buy an older edition--here are some really worth having: A Guide to Drawing (Daniel Mendelowitz), Art of Responsive Drawing (Nathan Goldstein), Art of Drawing (Bernard Chaet).
Somewhat disappointing.......2002-07-19
The quality of the reproductions in this book are second-rate and very dull. This didn't surprise me, as the paper stock and printing is going to be of lesser quality in a budget-priced book. And since the price is not unreasonable, this is a good student reference book
But here's what really upset me. Certain masters of drawing like Delacroix and Burne-Jones are completely missing. Nor are the selected drawings of Raphael included here the best examples, in my opinion.
I had the pleasure of visiting a sculptor friend and nearly tripping in the entrance of her house as I caught the sight of a fantastic little pencil drawing out of the corner of my eye. "Yes," she smiled "we think it is a Burne-Jones, even though it isn't signed." She has since passed on and donated her work and art collection to her alma mater. While I think that was a wonderful thing to do, that drawing may well end up in an archive and never be seen by the public, ever. So these books are sometimes the only way one ever gets to see masterful drawings, and to leave out some of the best artists makes me pretty sad. Save your money unless you need another drawing reference book and this contains what you are looking for.
What a book! (aka View of an artist).......2002-02-27
As usual, I am going to write about this book based on what strikes me most when I look at it and even more after I finish it.
The one thing I learn from this book is that it is NOT what you draw WITH, but it is more of WHAT you draw and HOW you draw that matters.
Remember when you were a little boy (or girl), you would love to draw on the snow, especially on the first snow of the season, smooth and fresh? Remember when you were a little boy, you would love to draw on the sand at the beach... standing; and the wave would wash it off? But I digress. The point is that this little book has taught me so many things in art and life that I cannot tell you all, but a few.
First off, it is a collection of beautiful drawings done by some of the Great Masters and draftsmen, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Raphael, Rubens, Du:rer, and Rembrandt, to name a few. Most of the works were done in pencil, crayon, or pen and ink. The genres covered include perhaps almost if not all of the important genres existing in fine arts, such as portraiture, figure (aka nudes), landscape, and even animals.
Secondly, art students and professional artists alike will find this book a valuable addition to their library collection. The treatment of line and mass drawing, brushstroke, cross-hatching, edge, composition, and such, are skillfully done. One would make a better artist simply by copying these drawings and learn to recreate the effects shown in them using the techniques mentioned. What a great number of valuable lessons in drawing for artists who believe in good draftsmanship and drawing skills.
Last but not least, what strikes me most perhaps is the figure drawing. Sensual, respectable (for crying out loud in this time and age!), beautiful posing, and masterful rendition. What a gem!
One second-to-final little note: As revealed in these drawings, and as we all know it, the figures of these old-time ladies are healthy, well-fed and attractive in their own right; attractive in the sense not only of being a beautiful creature to look at, but also a healthy and fertile mother-to-be!
As a final little note, for folks who would like to see anything with their analytical "artist's eyes", here is one for you to judge: Look at the drawing of "Lady-in-waiting to the Infanta Isabella" by Peter Paul Rubens (a flemish artist, 1577-1640) on the front cover (this drawing is Plate 58 in the book) and compare that with a picture of Alley McBeal (i.e. actress Calister Flockhart) to see for yourself. For a picture of Alley McBeal go to my "About You Area" for a book list about Alley McBeal, or one of the two books (both available at amazon.com): a) Ally McBeal: The Official Guide and b) David E. Kelley : The Man Behind Ally McBeal.
Don't miss this........2000-06-02
With very few words, and many excellent pictures, reveals the secrets of art and drawing. I can basically open a page and enjoy the classical art work while reading a section or a caption and learning something at the same time. Pictures alone are worth the price!
