Customer Reviews:
Rough Guide: Moscow .......2007-01-05
This book gives ou a nice overview of the region, and incredible specific tips for visiting Moscow.
Not worth the paper written on.......2006-08-29
As a las vegas lawyer, i traveled to moscow many times, and I purchased this book. This book is so out of date, it is not worth the room in your luggage.
Out of date, a month after publication?.......2005-06-29
I used the latest edition of this guidebook on my recent trip to Moscow (after having a great experience with the St. Petersburg version) and was shocked at how out of date the book was. Most of the restaurants that we tried from the book were closed or not at all what was described, and the prices (both for food and admission to various places) were wildly divergent from those listed in the book. While I understand that there is a lot of turnover and change among these things in Russia, this was simply unacceptable from a new edition that was released a month before my trip. Other guides that we had that were older were more accurate, so it's obvious that the authors did not really try to update this new edition before releasing it.
A second criticism: this book is extremely hard to use for actually navigating the city. The book is organized by the different districts within Moscow, with maps of each area only at the beginning of each section. This means that a great deal of time is wasted trying to find the correct map to look at. It would be much easier if all of the maps were at the back of the book. More importantly, the metro map in the book is absolutely useless. In Moscow, where 2 or more metro lines meet, each line will come into a different station with its own name that will then be connected by walkways to the other station. The map in this book does not make clear which station is on which line, which can make travel a lot more confusing than it needs to be. For a more useful metro map, check out the Eyewitness travel guide, which one of my travel companions used and found to be much better.
The postives: While I would not recommend that anyone use this book as their sole guide for the reasons listed above, the descriptions of the sites to see around Moscow were extremely informative. The recommendations for tour companies, including who has exclusive access to certain areas, were correct. I would rely whole-heartedly on the book's listings of what bus numbers to take to get around, as they were always accurate. Also, we did find 3 restaurants in the book that were still around, had good food, and reasonably priced: Dioskuriya (Georgian food: Nikitskiy bul. 5, str. 1 near the Arbatskaya metro, through the post office arch); Genatsvale (Georgian food: Ostozhenka ul. 12/1, near the Kropotkinskaya metro); and Karetniy Dvor (Azerbajani food: Povarskaya ul. 52, near the Barrikadnaya metro).
Better some guide than no guide at all.......2004-08-03
Unfortunately, despite the slow rise of tourists coming to Moscow, there is still no good guidebook. Taking that into consideration, I chose this over the Lonely Planet because it has more day trip information and more background.
This book is truly chock full of information. However, it is arranged in a way that is terribly useless. Neighborhoods are listed, followed by page after page of historical detail and buildings to notice -- guaranteed to get you lost if you actually try to read as you go. My method settled into choosing a neighborhood, reading the book, going there, getting lost, coming home, then reading the book again to try to discern where I'd been.
A bizarre cross section of details pepper the book: things like information on $100/month gyms for New Russians, but no useful notes on where average people can go work out. This sort of thing doesn't matter much to the tourist, but can be frustrating as someone living in Moscow.
I still think this is one of the better guides out there. It does have remarkable historical coverage in a small amount of space, as well as practical details that should satisfy any shoestring or economising traveller. One can hope that further issues of the Guide are able to arrange information more helpfully.
Better than Fodor's.......2000-01-25
Rough Guide's book on Moscow is by far one of the best tour books I have seen for that city. Recently we had the chance to live in Moscow for two months. This book, along with the Rough Guides Russian phrase book, were our constant companions. The Moscow book was essential for giving us really indepth information about most of the sites we went to see. Also, the history section was invaluable to us as we found it necessary to do a little homeschooling of our children while there. I still refer to the history section of the Moscow book to refresh my memory on the complicated story of Russian history.
We also had Fodor's along with us but found that we relied much more on Rough Guides as a source of important and reliable information. Rough Guides is a must if you visit Moscow.

Book Description
This is first comprehensive introduction to the linguistics of Auslan, the sign language of Australia. Assuming no prior background in language study, it explores each key aspect of the structure of Auslan, providing an accessible overview of its grammar (how sentences are structured), phonology (the building blocks of signs), morphology (the structure of signs), lexicon (vocabulary), semantics (how meaning is created), and discourse (how Auslan is used in context). The authors also discuss a range of myths and misunderstandings about sign languages, provide an insight into the history and development of Auslan, and show how Auslan is related to other sign languages, such as those used in Britain, the USA and New Zealand. Complete with clear illustrations of the signs in use and useful further reading lists, this is an ideal resource for anyone interested in Auslan, as well as those seeking a clear, general introduction to sign language linguistics.

Book Description
Film in Australia is a groundbreaking book that systematically addresses the wide-ranging output of Australian feature films. Adopting a genre approach, it gives a different take on Australian films made since 1970, bypassing the standard run of historical texts and actor- or character-driven studies of Australian film. Comedy, adventure, horror, science fiction, crime, art films and other types are analysed with clarity and insight so the reader can recognize and understand all kinds of Australian films, whether they are contemporary or older features, obscure gems or classic blockbusters. Film in Australia explains how particular types of films work, identifies sub-types, and surveys the work of local film makers in the different genres. Authoritatively argued for film studies courses, and based on the authorsâ deep and extensive knowledge of Australian film, it is also enjoyable and accessible for the general reader. A must-read for all students of Australian film.
Book Description
Intricately constructed collage paintings illustrate this gentle ecological lesson about rosy dock, an imported garden plant that has become a tenacious inhabitant of the Australian desert, spreading until it now threatens many indigenous plants and animals with extinction. "Baker's riveting collages dazzle the eyes and reward close examination."--Kirkus Reviews.
Customer Reviews:
3 1/2 Great Illustrations, But Somewhat Confusing .......2006-07-27
Author of the celebrated, award-winning "Home," Jeannie Baker uses collages made from photographs to illustate this story of the ebb and flow of vegetation in th Australian desert, corresponding to the "many cycles of rain and drought." THe pictures vividly contrast natural features: The parched land, an oasis, a rainstorm that produces a flood on the formerly dry land, and the resulting profusion of vegetation (and some animals who come to feed on it.) "Rosy Dock" is a plant introduced by settlers about a hundred years ago, and it spreads like a "blanket farther than the eye can see," after a storm. This seems like a good thing, because Baker constructs a vast landscape filled with rosy dock, and fronted by two rabbits at the conclusion. However, in an awkward postscript following the story, Baker informs us that well-intentioned introduction of non-native plants can adversely affect native plants and animals. This short section, like an author's note though not labeled as such, isn't integrated with the story, and may confuse readers who just a page before saw beautiful fields of the plant. The result is an unfocused book, with elements of history, science, and advocacy, but with negligible story elements and an apparently inconsistent point of view.
The collage illustrations are striking, and straddle the boundary between photography and drawing. THere's a faux hyper-realism: They're realistic because they're made from photos, but the collage technique gives them a constructed, often 3-dimensional look. The book is best when text and pictures come together to show the sudden rain/drought contrasts, but it doesn't quite show the cohesion needed for story time.
A TRIBUTE TO OUTBACK AUSTRALIA.......2000-12-13
.
Jeannie Baker's books always have a strong underlying environmental theme, but it is never too strident. Instead, she lets her beautiful artwork do most of the talking.
In "The Story of Rosy Dock" our focus is drawn to the harsh beauty of the Australian desert. The vivid desert red ochre colors shine out from every page. The level of realism that Jeannie has achieved in her collages tease the eye, with many quirky little details which are almost hiding in the huge landscapes.
The highlight of the story is a time when the dryness and harshness of the desert is inundated with rare flooding rains.
The human dimension is sensitively handled, where we see the elderly widow rescued from her little shack, when the floodwaters almost cover its roof. There is humour as well, where we see the widow's armchair high up in a dead tree when the floodwaters subside.
The sight of a small group of kangaroos and camels marooned on an island of high ground is touching. We see the spectacle of hundreds of pelicans coming up from the coast, seeking out the lakes created by the retreating floodwaters.
The environmental message comes through when we recognize the impact of the plagues of rabbits that burrow away in the sandy soil of the desert. The key to the story is the Rosy Dock plant, which was innocently planted by the widow in her precious little garden. This escapes and is propagated all over the countryside. The damaging impact of non-indigenous fauna and flora is a particularly severe problem in Australia.
The negative environmental impact of the Rosy Dock is clearly explained in an "afterword" by the author at the back of the book. In brief, it is the power of these introduced species to "change whole landscapes and push many (endemic) plants and animals to extinction".
.
Usual high standard from Baker.......2000-05-01
Jeannie Baker is a collage artist. many are created to illiustrate her children's books, but they also stand alone as works of art, and there are some in art galleries. like 'Where The Forest Meets The Sea' the technique is employed to illustrate an environmental theme - this time the introduction of exotic plant species. This time it is a desert environment of the Finke River. It is a superb introduction to this ecological issue. it is not, however finger-wagging. At the end Baker says: " Throughout the world, often with the best intentions, people introduce plants and animals into a new environment with enormous unforseen consequences. Without their normal predators, some non-native plants and animals multiply so quickly they change the whole landscapes and push many native plants and animals to extinction."
Thus Baker seeks to educate and alert us to the problem and raise our awarness so as to avoid the same mistakes in the future.
Equally at home as a general reading book, or useful in a primary school science course.
Book Description
Australia’s foreign relations are changing rapidly due to increased globalization of financial markets, greater trade with China and the United States, and recent terrorist activity such as the Australian Embassy bombing in Jakarta in 2004. This revised and updated edition outlines how Australia is restructuring its foreign policy to suit contemporary challenges and opportunities and includes an analysis of the policies of Howard and Downer and an easy-reference timeline. Trends such as military involvement in East Timor, Iraq, and the Solomon Islands; relations with the UN human rights treaty system and the Kyoto Protocol; and the new "good governance" focus of foreign aid are also identified.

Australian National Cinema (National Cinemas Series)

Book Description
This introduction to the new Australian film industry explores prominent directors and stars, themes, styles, and evolving genres in an analysis of key films. The evolution of genres peculiar to Australia and adaptations of conventional Hollywood forms such as the musical and the road movie are examined through readings of landmark films, including Picnic at Hanging Rock, Mad Max trilogy, and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The key issue of the revival--the definition, representation, and propagation of a national image--is woven through the analysis.
Book Description
A decade ago, Tim Low journeyed to the remote northernmost tip of Australia. Instead of the pristine rain forests he expected, he found jungles infested with Latin American carpet grass and feral cattle. That incident helped inspire Feral Future, a passionate account of the history and implications of invasive species in that island nation, with consequences for ecological communities around the globe.
Australia is far from alone in facing horrific ecological and economic damage from invading plants and animals, and in Low's capable hands, Australia's experiences serve as a wake-up call for all of us. He covers how invasive species like cane toads and pond apple got to Australia (often through misguided but intentional introductions) and what we can do to stop them. He also covers the many pests that Australia has exported to the world, including the paperbark tree (Melaleuca) that infests hundreds of thousands of acres in south Florida.

Book Description
One of the most critical environmental challenges facing both Californians and Australians in the 1860s involved the aftermath of the gold rushes. Settlers on both continents faced the disruptive impacts of mining, grazing, and agriculture; in response to these challenges, environmental reformers attempted to remake the natural environment into an idealized garden landscape. As this cutting-edge history shows, an important result of this nineteenth-century effort to "renovate" nature was a far-reaching exchange of ideas between the United States--especially in California--and Australia. Ian Tyrrell demonstrates how Californians and Australians shared plants, insects, personnel, technology, and dreams, creating a system of environmental exchange that transcended national and natural boundaries. True Gardens of the Gods traces a new nineteenth-century environmental sensibility that emerged from the collision of European expansion with these frontier environments.
Tyrrell traces historical ideas and personalities, provides in-depth discussions of introduced plants species (such as the eucalyptus and Monterey Pine), looks at a number of scientific programs of the time, and measures the impact of race, class, and gender on environmental policy. The book represents a new trend toward studying American history from a transnational perspective, focusing especially on a comparison of American history with the history of similar settler societies. Through the use of original research and an innovative methodology, this book offers a new look at the history of environmentalism on a regional and global scale.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent comparative history.......2003-11-15
For anyone interested in the Pacific Rim, and in comparative history, this book provides a fascinating introduction to the beginnings of an environmental consciousness in the West and in Australia. Centred on plants and water, Tyrrell provides a convincing number of examples of shared problems between California and Australia; he also highlights the vexed issues of introduced species, and the aesthetic ideologies which accompany the use of "exotic" plants.
It is solid history, but also fun to read.
