      Book Description

In the third edition of her successful textbook, Paula Rudall provides a comprehensive yet succinct introduction to the anatomy of flowering plants. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout, the book covers all aspects of comparative plant structure and development, arranged in a series of chapters on the stem, root, leaf, flower, seed and fruit. Internal structures are described using magnification aids from the simple hand-lens to the electron microscope. Numerous references to recent topical literature are included, and new illustrations reflect a wide range of flowering plant species. The phylogenetic context of plant names has also been updated as a result of improved understanding of the relationships among flowering plants. This clearly written text is ideal for students studying a wide range of courses in botany and plant science, and is also an excellent resource for professional and amateur horticulturists.

        Book Description

This volume highlights the new synthesis of pollination biology and plant mating systems which is rejuvenating the two-hundred-year-old discipline of floral biology. It provides a current examination of the evolution and functional significance of floral traits in animal-pollinated plants, combining ecological and genetic studies with natural history approaches and theoretical modeling. Divided into three sections, the book begins with the first English translation of Christian Konrad. Sprengel's introduction to his classic work and a historical analysis of his observations. The second section addresses current conceptual problems in floral biology, concentrating on floral diversification, floral longevity, pollen dispersal and mating patterns, the ecology of geitonogamous pollination, and flower size dimorphism in plants with unisexual flowers. The final chapters of the book examine model systems and include the evolution of floral morphology and function, deceit pollination, reproductive success and gender variation, stylar polymorphisms, and the evolution of flowers in relation to insect pollinators on islands. With its a detailed treatment of the selective forces shaping floral diversification in animal-pollinated plants, Floral Biology provides ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and botanists with a wealth of current information. Everyone interested in the evolution of flowering plants will benefit from this timely, authoritative resource on the interactions between insects and plants.

This book is a well-written, engaging resource on flower reproduction, a subject not often taught in depth. I used this book as the main resource for a lecture about flower color given to high school students. THey were fascinated. Biology and chemistry teachers alike should read this book. Its pictures are colorful and interesting (eg an orchid species that evolved to appear exactly like a bee).

        Book Description

The study of plant development using molecular and genetic techniques is rapidly becoming one of the most active areas of research on flowering plants. The aim of this book is to present a sense of the accomplishments of the past and of the outstanding problems of the future in the study of plant development. An important feature of this book is the integration of results from molecular and genetic studies on various aspects of plant development in a cellular and physiological context. Of particular interest to readers will be the clear treatment of each landmark stage in the life cycle of plants such as seed germination, seedling growth, flowering, gametogenesis, pollen-pistil interactions, embryogenesis, fruit ripening, and seed and bud dormancy. The book also considers the development of individual plant organs such as the shoot, leaf, root and flowers as well as alternate developmental strategies of plants.

Any guidebook has its biases. It's the edge that makes a guidebook unique, the approach that lets you trust a guidebook implicitly (if those biases correspond with your own)--or that cause you grief, if you and the author don't see eye to eye. To his credit, Ian Keown is up-front with his propensities, spelling out his pet peeves in his introduction. Do you prefer ceiling fans to air-conditioning, dislike piped-in music intruding upon your candlelit dinner, and strive to avoid cruise-ship hordes? Keown does, and his recommendations are based on those values.

Keown covers the Caribbean from the Cayman Islands on down to Tobago, imparting snippets of history and data (in the Caymans, for example, there are now 400 banks serving fewer than 20,000 people) and recommending the best, sweetest, most romantic places for a Caribbean holiday. Now in its ninth edition, Caribbean Hideaways has honed hotel description to a fine art. All the relevant information is there, plus humor, sarcasm, and praise. --Stephanie Gold

                  Book Description

Whatever your taste, Caribbean Hideaways has a place that will perfectly suit you and your special someone, from a tiny bungalow on a secluded beach to a luxury resort with all the trimmings. Our expert author gives candid, evocative descriptions of each accommodation, complete with ratings for romantic atmosphere, food, diversions and rates.

                  Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not so Hiddenaways.......2005-08-14

In true Frommers style this book is well written, thorough and well researched. The problem lies in the fact that contrary to what the desciption would have you believe the properties listed in this guide are for the most part in the very expensive range. Now in some respects a "hideaway" needs be a purposely found hideaway location that warrants the high price for privacy but I was disappointed that more off-the-beaten track, unusual/quirky, hidden gem sort of accomodations were not mentioned. If you are seeking a honeymoon location, in cognito vacation or splurge than this book is for you, but if you are looking for something not found in those full page vacation sell-off ads - get a different book.

5 out of 5 stars THE book for those who truly appreciate the real caribbean.......2004-01-22

For me (and others who really travel the caribbean) this is the book!! These are the very best places to stay with excellent commentary , room suggestions, descriptions etc. I have traveled to almost all of the suggestions and Ian is right on the money. Do NOT buy this book if you like all inclusives with lots of party games - it is not for you. This is an escapist manual. I would trust his suggestions for the trip of a lifetime - everytime! I have both copies and it is obvious the new edition was not just a rehash - everything is updated. Worth every penny and more!

5 out of 5 stars The Caribbean awaits for romance!.......2001-02-12

What a WONDERFUL guide to the Caribbean!! This specialized Frommer's Guide is not the usual travel book ... it delivers the romance part of the equation, as promised. Not only are the descriptions detailed enough to make some intelligent choices, the overall organization of the book is fantastic. And, the author's first-hand experience, over decades - not a few months, makes this a must have resource. I can't imagine going to the Caribbean without this in my bag!

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book if you don't want to travel.......2000-07-06

This book will seduce you into quickly booking your next vacation. It is simply GREAT! Lots of pricey suggestions, but several less-expensive gems too. Buy it, and you will be travelling soon.

Keown's detailed and forthright travel guide is must-read for anyone looking for an off-the-beaten-track, romantic beach vacation. We each read Keown's descriptions of the various resorts cover to cover and dog-eared the possibilities - then compared notes. Truthfully, any of the resorts he reviewed would have fit the bill, but his thorough evaluation of four areas (dining, sports, rates and the hard-to-capture "atmosphere" category) allowed us to find the right fit for our vacation. He tells you which islands to pick depending on your budget, mood and individual needs, then takes you through virtually every consideration you'll need to select the right resort, down to island taxes, transports, tipping, and room service availability. His pet peeves are the same as ours - no huge hotels, no convention centers, and no cruise ships! Thanks to Keown, we were able to find the perfect romantic Caribbean hideaway for our honeymoon. We loved it so much we're buying the 9th edition for our next vacation.

5 out of 5 stars Most unique and desciptive source for Caribbean Getaways!.......1999-07-08

Ian describes in detail the most romatic inns, hotels and getaways available in the Caribbean. He writes the information you REALLY want to know before you travel...location of the room, the activities not to miss, what to expect and special details which set apart his book from all the rest. I read this book cover to cover and marked all the places I wanted to travel based on his recommendation. After I traveled to the first location on my honeymoon (it was everything I pictured it to be, based on his description) I then put it to the test and traveled once again to a location I read about in the book. Again, I was impressed at the detail he was able to capture within the pages.

I plan to travel to each of the resorts he rates highly and would recommend to any reader that enjoys the Caribbean to pick up this book and you won't be disappointed. In fact, even if you don't step foot out of the privacy of your our home, after reading this book, you will feel as if you have traveled to some of the most amazing Hideaways in the Caribbean.
