Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on the plant life cycle.......2007-01-31
The life cycle of a plant from seed to seed is beautifully illustrated and told as a story in the rhythmic pattern of the "House that Jack Built". Each page has a flap and under each flap is more information about plants, the garden and its other inhabitants. My 3 year old enjoyed the book and the flaps. I'm not crazy about the flaps because I'm afraid he is going to tear them up, but that is my only complaint about the book. The illustrations are detailed and visually interesting. It kept my small childs attention and he would have liked that I left the book with him. An improvement would be to republish the book with all the same information but make it a board book and no flaps.
A Great Collection.......2003-03-25
This book has been great fun to use while planting our garden. It helps speed the process along to show what will happen next, plus has great illustrations to show what happens under the ground. This entire series of books is top-rate.
Fun and Facts!.......2000-01-27
I really enjoyed this book that I donated to our school library. I seldom see books that are both non fiction and fiction in one edition. The illustrations were great and the flip format was fun.

Book Description
National Geographic Traveler: Ireland, Second Edition provides in-depth information on Irish history and culture, along with practical travel advice for getting around the enchanted isle. From the cosmopolitan streets of Dublin to the horse-racing stables of County Kildare, from the fabled Ring of Kerry to the Yeats Country surrounding Sligo Town, from a walking tour of Dingle Way to a self-guided drive through the Sperrin Hills of Northern Ireland, from mountain moorlands to eerie bogs, this new edition guides you to memorable attractions throughout Ireland's many storied regions.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely guide to Ireland, but not the most practical.......2007-05-15
If you plan to purchase several guides to Ireland, this one would be worth adding to your collection. The photographs are beautiful, and the descriptions of sites of interest, while not the most in-depth around, are certainly more than adequate for a book of this type. If you are like me and your budget allows for 2, maybe 3 books, and you are trying to choose from the almost overwhelming number of guidebooks available these days, this is one you can probably skip. The practical information is quite limited compared to other guides, especially with regard to places to stay or eat. This would be an enjoyable book to peruse at home both before and after your trip, and it would be great for an armchair traveler, but I can't see it making its way into many suitcases. It's heavy, and its usefulness once you are in Ireland is limited. If you enjoy a visual, heavy on photographs travel guide, I would recommend you check out Eyewitness Travel's guide to Ireland first. The Eyewitness guides are also gorgeous to look at and fun to read, but a lot more practical.
Beautiful photos and excellent information.......2007-05-07
As one would expect, National Geographic did an excellent job on the Ireland book. The photos are beautiful and the information is excellent. It's a good book to have in my collection of travel resources.
Customer Reviews:
A Travel Guide that will be a "Keeper"........2005-12-05
I have been to Ireland 3 times, have used several guides, and have a substantial collection of Irish literature and pictorial
books. When I saw this book,I immediately saw it was very different.I am also very familiar with National Geographic Field Guides from birding.Back in 1983,they published "Birds of North America" and rapidly became the preferred book for birders.Every birder I know has a copy. They even update their copy with each new addition. These Bird Guides are used in the field, take a great amount of hard use,in all kinds of weather, and in spite of it all, still hold together. Not only that, there is no other better all purpose guide. To date, it has sold over 1 1/2 million copies and more are coming. This has been a marvelous feat because of all the guides already published, and the personal preferences of birders.Although the National Geographic have great resources and talents, they enlisted Jon Dunn,in my opinion, the top Birder in North America,as it's Editor in Chief.
I have reviewed this book some time ago.(February 6,2005 and November 15,2005)
I have gone into all this because I immediately saw the same professionalism applied to this Travel Guide. We all know that after the trip is over, the travel guide gets the heave-ho,since it goes rapidly out of date, and becomes more so very soon.Even someone planning a trip wants the latest info on restaurants, hotels, prices, etc.;and that's fair enough. However, that is where this Guide shines. It does a super job of covering what is to be seen, excellent maps, great history and background. This is all done with excellent photos, illustrations and all in color and printed on top of the line paper, then using the best construction that will stand up to all the wear and tear imaginable.
Just to go back to bird guides, there is so much to cover,a choice must be made.If up to date accomodations, restaurants and prices are your interest, you should get a book that stresses those things.
I would suggest you read some of the reviews written on other Guides in this series;they really do a good job on this .Just search under "Traveler National Geographic" where you'll find Nat Geo Guides for many cities and countries.
This is more than a travel guide,it is as much a Reference book on Ireland and will be kept and often returned to as a reminder of your travels. Some have suggested it is a companion that shouls be left at home.I can't agree because this will be an excellent book to have with you when looking at anything you see in your travels.
Info on accomodations, restaurants and prices isn't much help when you visit Bru na Boinne (page 268)but this ook will be.
On one of my visits to Ireland I went to Kilmainham Goal and was particularly impressed with the job of describing this National Treasure. It did it so well,I could almost hear the song "Grace",one of the all time great Irish ballads describing the people involved and efforts to make Ireland "A Nation Once Again".
If you want to know what to see, and why, when you visit Ireland;I can't think of any guide that does it as well.

Book Description
Attempts by writers and intellectuals in former colonies to create unique national cultures are often thwarted by a context of global modernity, which discourages particularity and uniqueness. In describing unstable social and political cultures, such "third-world intellectuals" often find themselves torn between the competing literary requirements of the "local" culture of the colony and the cosmopolitan, "world" culture introduced by Western civilization.
In Zones of Instability, Imre Szeman examines the complex relationship between literature and politics by exploring the production of nationalist literature in the former British empire. Taking as his case studies the regions of the British Caribbean, Nigeria, and Canada, Szeman analyzes the work of authors for whom the idea of the"nation" and literature are inexorably entwined, such as Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, C.L.R. James, Frantz Fanon, and V.S. Naipaul. Szeman focuses on literature created in the two decades after World War II, decades in which the future prospects for many colonies went from extreme political optimism to extreme political disappointment. He finds that the "nation" can be read as that space in which literature is thought to be able to conjoin two things that history has separated -- the writer and the people.

not what I expected!.......2005-10-10
I was expecting to get pictures in this book... there is none!
I was really disapointed!
Be careful, this book is only a listing of Chesley Bonestell work! Not any illustration of it!!!
But if this is what you are looking for, it seems to be very well done and complete
NOTE: NO PICTURES!.......2004-03-04
I should not have bought this book. There's no question it is an excellent resource, but I bought it expecting artwork and there is NONE in this book! Buy it if you are an active collector looking for Bonestell's very hard-to-find paintings in magazines and books, but if you're looking for a book of his art, this isn't it!
Praise for a Powerful Resource.......2003-04-30
I rarely take the opportunity to provide feedback, whether positive or negative, for items that I have purchased. Contrary to my nature, I enthusiastically offer my critique of Melvin Schuetz' book "A Chesley Bonestell Space Art Chronology". I have fond childhood "space" memories from the nostalgic, captivating decade of the 1950s. As a child, I gathered and treasured a modest number of space-related items. As an adult, my continued interest in space travel and exploration provides countless hours of enjoyment. Unlike when I was a child, I now have the necessary resources to seek, to find and to acquire any number of space-related collectables. Most alluring to me are "space" books and periodicals published in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Without question, the best tools that I have discovered and that I use in my quest for such books are e-bay and "A Chesley Bonestell Space Art Chronology". If I were limited to only one adjective to describe Melvin's book, it would be "powerful". As I pour through the various Appendixes, e.g., "Major Books Containing Bonestell Space Art" and Indexes, e.g., "Index of Authors and Editors", "Index of Books" and "Index of Periodicals", I gain an ever-increasing knowledge of and appreciation for Bonestell's work. Over time, I have gravitated toward particular aspects of Bonestell's space-art. Specifically, I prefer Bonestell's artistic renderings of space ships like those that graced the covers of Colliers magazines circa 1952-1954 than I do his astronomical renditions of alien planetary systems and galaxies. But that's the "powerful" nature of Melvin's book - it contains everything (I dare say - without exception). The prolific work of Chesley Bonestell is mind-boggling to me. Also mind-boggling is Melvin Schuetz' complete accounting of Bonestell's work. And, Melvin does it in such a way as to educate and entertain the reader. "A Chesley Bonestell Space Art Chronology" is a wonderful book, a must for anyone interested in Chesley Bonestell.
Text Resource.......2000-01-18
As a long time Bonestell fan I was pleased to acquire the Chronology. It provides information about the places where Bonestell art has been published. Even the long time fan may find some surprise books. For example, it's great to be able to find out the exact issues of Colliers with Bonestell art. Be prepared, though, the only picture in the entire book is on the cover. The rest is all text. If you need a resource to help you search for OP books and magazines on the web, this is it. Be ready for high prices or just plain non-availability. Some books like The Exploration of Mars (one of the best for Bonestell art) are virtually unavailable.
Excellent Resource on Bonestell Art.......1999-12-11
It is a well organized book, has excellent information and is easy to understand. It is very interesting (for those of us who like Bonestell and space art). It will be extremely helpful to me for obtaining Bonestell items of personal interest. I am glad Melvin Schuetz was willing to organize and share the information.
