Book Description
Winter, when plants are dormant and their leaves may have fallen, is a challenging time to identify woody flora. Designed especially for winter use and featuring almost six hundred illustrations, this taxonomic guide describes some nine hundred plant species by their twig, bud, and bark characteristics. All the trees, shrubs, and woody ground covers that grow without aid of cultivation in the Southeast are presented here, in a single reference.
Includes the following:
* native plants, as well as naturalized exotic species known to occur in at least two locations in the Southeast
* geographical coverage from east Texas and northern Florida to southeastern Kansas and southern Delaware
* spring or summer features of a plant in the absence of any reliable winter diagnostic features
* a map of the guide's coverage area and nearly six hundred illustrations that show distinguishing characteristics of twigs and buds
* a brief introduction to botanical terminology and the use of taxonomic keys, descriptions of various habitats and physiographic regions of the Southeast, a glossary, a list of references, and an index that includes common and scientific names

Customer Reviews:
good but older key, coniferous evergreens missing.......2006-01-30
I'm a gardener at a botanical garden, but I have no formal training in botany, so take my remarks accordingly.
I've found this book useful, although the key sequence is longer than the other two keys I use regularly. The book uses line drawings, which for buds & leaf scars actually works pretty well.
The keys use quite a bit of plant science terminology- most of it is covered in the glossary at the end of the book.
The biggest disappointment for me was the exclusion of coniferous evergreens from the book.
On a day to day basis, I used another book "Fruit & Twig Key to Trees & Shrubs" more often, but this one covers more species.

Detailed drawings and descriptions of plants in winter.......2002-08-13
This is a very unusual book. Reading it is like walking through a winter woods with a very knowledgeable botanist - plant lover who is willing to give you endless time to talk about plants, but without all the discomfort that involves. Black & white and color drawings by the author of hundreds of familiar and unusual wild plants of the Northeast United States, in the way they look in winter. (Usually one sees drawings only of spring, summer and fall foliage and flowers)
Detailed description and discussion of each plant are on the opposite page from each drawing.

Making and Using a Flower Press: Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin A-196 (Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin, a-196)
ASIN: 1556709366 |
Book Description
These days, trend-conscious tastemakers from Martha Stewart to the Pottery Barn are celebrating the art of the botanical specimen. Yet this art form has enjoyed popularity for centuries. This beautiful and lavishly illustrated book is the first to present botanical specimens, herbaria, and nature prints as artworks to be collected-and even created anew.
This engaging interpretation of the colorful history of plant collection traces its progress from a hazardous natural science on eighteenth-century explorations, to a fad among Victorian-era ladies and clergyman, to a keen pursuit for today's art collectors, garden enthusiasts, and crafters.
The Pressed Plant offers a thorough representation of four different art forms consisting of or created with actual plants: botanical specimens, in which parts of or entire plants are attached to archival paper; herbaria, or bound books holding a variety of plant specimens; nature prints, images made directly from plants; and sun prints, which are produced when a plant is placed on light-sensitive paper and exposed to the sun. A detailed appendix includes instructional material, sources for materials, and a collector's buying guide.
Customer Reviews:
The Pressed Plant.......2005-07-25
I was disappointed with this book - I was expecting something completely different. Very staid and did not give the information on pressed plants that I was looking for.
Beautiful, inspiring, unusual book.......2004-11-23
I love The Art of the Pressed Plant. The authors mine the history, the science and the art of preserved plants in this
rich book. It was fascinating to learn about the people who have collected plants throughout history, what that meant, and what that was like for them. It was inspiring and surprising to see the beautiful specimens. You will not be disappointed if you get this book.
The Pressed Plant.......2002-02-21
The author provides a well written history of plant preservation and pressing with summaries, comments, illustrations, and a comprehensive "how to" section. Anyone interested in pressed plant collecting should own this book.
Very impressive, clearly written, beautifully illustrated!.......2001-02-23
As an avid fan of leaves and wildflowers, with not a few pressed examples stuck in books and files, I was glad to find a book that celebrates all kinds of pressed plants, from ferns to seaweeds (!), as art. There's an amazing fossilized impression of a prehistoric plant, photos of Victorian botanists' carefully pressed samples, and sun prints done with photographic paper over a century ago. Plus a few modern artists' examples. This book proves that Mother Nature has been one of the best artists all along, and that we humans can have a sort of artistic partnership by preserving botanical specimens in one way or another. The wide array of images is mouth-watering; and the book can be used as a sort of tasting party to get you started on a new collection, or, using the how-to at the back of the book, a new hobby or art.
Gorgeous detail for pressing plants! Buy two!.......2000-07-12
For years I searched for a book that would direct me through the process of pressing ferns and other plants. This is it! This exquisite book is a treasure! The author shows the nature lover how to complete the process of preserving plants, just as the Victorians did. However, this wonderful hobby did not originate with the Victorians, they just renewed it with avid inspiration and volumes of renditons and renderings. This book takes the reader through the history of plant preservation, and shows the eager "artist" three different techniques for display: using the real thing, printing with paints and inks, and sun printing. This book is so wonderful, you may want to have two. The numerous copies of original and rare prints are so gorgeous, you may need an extra volume to "cheat" with: you know remove from the volume and, voila, inexpensive yet exquisite art!

There are so many travel choices it's frightening, or it would be if not for Miranda Haines's Traveler's Handbook, which helps with issues like when to travel, where to travel, which festivals to aim for or avoid, what guides to buy, and what kind of focus you want in your trip: independence, adventure, romance, luxury, work, or eco-travel. The Handbook explores each option, describing the ups and downs of traveling alone, as well as the practicalities to consider for pregnant, elderly, and diabetic travel, honeymoon, gay, and vegetarian travel, and female, student, and business travel.
There are chapters on all the concerns of flying (how to choose an airline, getting a good deal, traveler's protection), overlanding (motorbikes to trucks to buying and selling a car abroad), train travel, river travel, hitchhiking, foot, and microlight travel, cargo ship, horse, and camel travel. There are chapters on visas and money, health and luggage, communication, computers, and theft, as well as surviving a hijack, a kidnap, and a civil war. No travel stone is left unturned. And as if this weren't enough, there follows a directory of all the countries in the world, with info on population, capital, currency, government, religion, safety, and best times to visit for each. This plus world weather charts, rainy season guides, sea temperatures and city altitudes make this an incredibly thorough and useful book.
Travel is the unknown, and the unknown promotes anxiety. It's reassuring to read these careful, perceptive words penned by someone who's given some thought to all the angles.
Book Description
Today's most authoritative guide on how to travel anywhere, anyhow. This guide contains expert advice from the world's most experienced travelers, personal reflections from globe-trotting celebrities, survival tips and health facts, profiles of every country as well as a comprehensive contacts directory. Whether you're a backpacker or a business traveler, an adventurer or a beginner, you'll find this book essential and inspiring.
Customer Reviews:
Facts for travel.......2005-11-22
This book contains the same information in the beginning of any guide book regarding money, transport, health......but no specific details. It is a compilation of articles written about different type of travel such as hitchiking, cargo boats... It is a general overview with no details on travel around the world...just bits and pieces.
Traveler's Handbook Rules!.......2005-07-31
This book was very informative. We are planning an around the world trip next year and this book created a great starting point with many chapters to stimulate your thinking. We really enjoyed the listing of all the countries with information on "when to travel", "safety", and "visas" required. It also provided local phone numbers and addresses around the world to reach incase of an emergency. We will definitely bring this book on our travels!
Excellent resource and inspiration.......2002-03-29
This book is everything it's cracked up to be. One thing anyone considering buying this should note, though is that it's a UK based publication. In discussions about visas and work permits, it assumes EU citizenship. A lot of the advice wouldn't pertain to a U.S. citizen. Most of the directory information only lists U.K. based organizations.
That said, this is a great resource and very inspirational. It's made me think about going to places that I would have never even considered before. That's mostly because it combines engaging narratives by obviously well-travelled writers along with nuts and bolts practical information on the "how to" planning stages, and insightful advice.
It prepares you for the cultural differences you're likely to encounter, and prompts you to think about contingencies due to weather, medical, or political trouble. There are warnings about the hazards and adversity of some travel without trying to scare you away from it. The book manages to be a general purpose travel guide without being generic. It would be an equally good read for adventure travellers as it would for cruise ship enthusiasts.
The reference section alone is well worth the price, giving you fascinating and comprehensive information about every country on the planet. This book approaches you like a good friend who happens to be an experienced travel agent, hoping to help you plan a trip of a lifetime. It is remarkably well written and organized. I can't imagine planning a trip overseas without it.
Don't travel the world without it!.......2001-04-03
This is a great book. It is little in size, but huge in content. The editors have covered just about every aspect of world travel. If you want to know about riding a camel, how to survive being kidnapped, or how to avoid hassles in a certain country, this book will have the answer for you. It also includes a lot of emergency contacts, practical global travel tips, and useful website addresses.
This book is THE hitchiker's guide to the planet Earth........1998-03-25
What an indispensable guide for the world traveler. This book is cover-to-cover bits in a single volume, weighing the same as a water bottle. This book is literally the planet earth's version of the famed "hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy", with short, informed essays on everything from choosing guides to all forms of travel to finding great rates to finding places to stay to equipping for a trip to what to do when things go wrong (topics for that one include: theft, trouble with the law, surviving a hijack, surviving a kidnap, surviving in jungle/desert/cold, and my favorite: surviving a civil war). Plus it's got 300 pages of directory, like an all-bits almanac....

An educational and very funny read. The facts are all true, but have been presented in a consistely funny and readable tabloid style. Maps, pictures, and fact boxes (and some very funny ads) support the text. Highly recommended.
Forgotten history.......2000-05-15
My name is Maelle and I am in 4 th grade. This was a fun book and I really enjoyed it because it was presented in an easy way to learn and understand how some civilisations lived in the old old days, not the usual way of sometimes boring history books. This book make me want to learn more details about the Vikings.

Customer Reviews:
More history than most, but a good beginning.......2006-07-12
Author Reger, according to his biography on the last page of this volume, descends from pioneers who experienced several "brushes" with Indians in the West Virginia region, including one who "lived...as a slave 'wife'" for several years among an unspecified tribe in Ohio. This may account for his rather aggressive political incorrectness (as witnessed by the fact that he never uses the term "Native American," which, of course, was completely unknown at the time of which he writes). The chief flaw in the book is that it isn't always easy to figure out whether he's referring to the early Eastern woodsmen or the later "mountain men." Apart from that, he does include (as authors in this series almost always seem to) several omissions and errors of fact; he speaks of the "beatings [and] general disrespect" that the third or fourth wife of an Indian brave was likely to suffer, and accepts as wholly accurate trapper Jim Beckwourth's assertion that he not only once tomahawked a Blackfoot wife nearly to death, but was actually supported in his action by her father, who advised his warriors that they should kill wives who failed to obey them. (Beckwourth himself admitted that he stretched the truth more than once, as when he lied to an aged Crow chief and his wife to convince them that he was their long-lost son and so get himself accepted into the tribe; and my 40-odd years of study convince me that among the Plains peoples, as among most other North American tribes, women had a good deal of status and were very seldom abused--and when they were, they had the option of divorce, if their own families didn't avenge them.) He completely ignores the many instances of white "captives," of all ages and both sexes (including several who had been noted as Indian fighters before their capture), who grew so attached to the Indians who adopted them that they refused to be reassimilated even after their return was mandated by treaty, hiding out in the woods till the enforcers gave up and went home, running away from their white families to get back to the new Indian ones, or even visiting their former homes in an effort to persuade others to join them. He speaks of "one hundred years of nearly constant strife" between whites and Blackfeet, dating from Lewis & Clark's first encounter with them in 1806 (in fact, the tribe was mostly pacified, owing in part to epidemics, by the late 1860's), suggests that black bears are innately aggressive (actually they're quite shy, and prefer to run from a human rather than attacking him, unless you meet with a female trying to protect her cub), and takes as gospel the story that a grizzly (admittedly a rather more perilous species of b'ar) "attempted to crush [a trapper] in a deadly embrace" (the "bear hug" is in fact a fabrication: bears attack by biting or by blows of their forepaws). He speaks of the strong odor of his subjects as if it were a constant, when in fact those who lived for long periods among the Indians (especially the Plains tribes, who, as nomads, were notably cleanly) probably picked up on their hosts' custom of daily bathing. And he excoriates John C. Fremont for "[becoming] famous through self-promotion rather than through the merits of his exploits," as if the mere fact that he made it across the Rockies several times in the 1840's wasn't notable just for its own sake; certainly he can't have been any more of a boaster than some of the mountain men he met. However, Reger also provides several vivid descriptions of the Indian fighters' adventures (not necessarily for readers of sensitive nature) and a good overall history of their experience, from the French and Indian Wars through the days of the white beaver-trappers c. 1820-40, along with the series' usual interesting sidebars and contemporary quotes and illustrations. As long as you bear in mind his personal prejudices and the fact that many of his subjects need to be taken with a grain of salt, he's written a useful book on an aspect of the pioneer experience which few YA writers have troubled to cover.

When the 13 colonies won their freedom in the American Revolution, the United States was a narrow strip of land along the Atlantic Ocean. Book Description
Essays in this volume examine the significance of the frontier in American history, with emphasis on how the frontier changed throughout the nineteenth century. Selections trace how the wilderness frontier first explored by Lewis and Clark gave way to the mining frontier of the California gold rush, the cattle-driving frontier of the cowboys, and finally the farming frontier of countless pioneers who settled the Great Plains.

Book Description
Unlike other immigrants who arrived in North America with hopes of a better life, Africans were kidnapped from their homelands and sent over as slaves. The account of how Africans were first brought to North America and how they eventually flourished in the face of overwhelming prejudice is highlighted with full-color artwork and eyewitness accounts. Detailed maps show where they settled and how their traditions are still celebrated today.
