Book Description
Whether its skunk cabbage blooming in the late winter chill, columbine and phlox bursting with color in the summer heat, or witch hazel blossoms patiently waiting for the cool of late fall, the flowers of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky mountains put on a spectacular show for all but the coldest months of the year. Whether on a dayhike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park or winding through 469 miles of mountain beauty along the Blue Ridge Parkway, appreciating the wildflowers along the way, using Wildflowers of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains as your guide, adds a level of enjoyment that has no price.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book.......2005-06-06
There is no doubt this is the most beautiful wildlfower book I have ever seen. Each of the 120 photos are full page, full color, and absolutely stunning in their clarity, composition and ability to help you identify a flower. The text is also very informative--and nicely written. Instead of technical jargon, the author gives you all kinds of information in easy to understand and often entertaining language. I'll cherish this book for a long time and use it often as he also tells you specific sites to find each flower. Again, A BEAUTIFUL BOOK.

Book Description
Covering approximately 50,000 square miles, the Ozarks is an upland region that spans four states--Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Illinois. In this beautifully illustrated, practical field guide, ecologist and botanist Thomas E. Hemmerly identifies more than 600 species of Ozark flowering plants. Ozark Wildflowers is the only book with full color photographs that covers all flowering plants of the Ozark region, including the Ouachita Mountains and Crowley's Ridge.
Hemmerly's primary focus is herbaceous plants, but he also includes an assortment of trees, shrubs, and woody vines with showy flowers. He conveniently organizes the species descriptions primarily by color and secondarily by the grand group--monocot or dicot--to which they belong. To further assist the reader, Hemmerly has included a glossary, an appendix of Ozark natural areas, a bibliography, and an index.
In addition to serving as an identification guide, Ozark Wildflowers features plants in the context of their environment and the regions where they occur. Hemmerly surveys other plants and animals that form communities with wildflowers and describes the soil, water, climate, and geology that influence Ozark ecology. The author also provides valuable information regarding any medical or ethnobotanical uses of the plants discussed.

Book Description
The alpine and forest terrain of the Southern Rockies region, from southern Wyoming to northern New Mexico, including Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, is a popular destination for wildflower viewing. High-quality color photographs and descriptions written for non-botanists make this an easy-to-use field guide.
Customer Reviews:
The best wildflower guide I've seen!.......1999-06-16
This is a great guide-the color photos are sharp and clear, the writing is to-the-point and very descriptive and helpful. There is also a section that defines terminology, which is useful to those of us who don't already know everything there is to know about wildflowers but are simply interested in knowing what kind of flower we saw! This book makes identification of a flower easy and certain, instead of wondering which of two (or more) it might be, as I've often found with other guides.

Five stars for numbers of flowers!.......2002-07-04
With 600 color photos and 1200 species described this is by far the most comprehensive book for identifying flowers of the region. It is a book for the serious who really want to name as many flowers as they can. It may be a bit too comprehensive for a beginner who just wants to find the common flowers because of the sheer quantity .
Most comprehensive wildflower book for the Southern Mountain.......1999-06-11
This is the most comprehensive and inclusive book I have been able to find about the Wildflowers of the Southern Appalachain. It is very helpful in identification but is a little lacking but only slightly in some other informative plant information. It has all of the basics and I love the book to be sure. Needs to add more asides about the plants...etc..what they might have been used for. It definately has been the most helpful book to have around to identify all the flowers. I would not be without it. By far my favorite.
Excellent book. Most thorough of its kind I have ever seen........1998-03-16
This book is a true tour de force, as Smith draws from his 20,000 photographs and 20 years of experience in the botany of the southern mountains.

Book Description
This authoritative guide showcases the unmatched beauty and diversity of the native orchids of the southern Appalachian mountains. Based on Stanley Bentley's many years of nature study, it covers the 52 speciesincluding one discovered by Bentley and named after himfound in a region encompassing western Virginia and North Carolina and eastern West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
The entry for each orchid provides the plant's scientific and common names, a description of the flower (including color, shape, and size), and information on the time of flowering, range, and typical habitat, all in the context of the southern mountains. A range map accompanies each description, and Bentley's own superb photographs are an additional aid to identification.
Using straightforward language yet incorporating the most up-to-date scientific information and nomenclature, the book will be welcomed by amateur naturalists or professional botanists looking for species in the field and by those who simply enjoy photographs of beautiful wildflowers.
Customer Reviews:
As Beautiful As the Orchids.......2002-05-13
This turns out to be an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it. The text is pleasant to read, written in a friendly and personal way. The pictures are crisp and beautiful, and laid out nicely alongside the text for easy access while reading the description. One outstanding feature is the detailed habitat information based on the author's years of field experience in observing the habitats of each of these orchids. Another stand-out is that the author has done the photography himself, resulting in pictures that support and complement the text very well. I checked several books on orchids and wildflowers while trying to identify an orchid in my forest (which turns out to be a lily-leaved twayblade), and I found this book to be the best. In summary, I'm impressed with this book. I hope it will set a new standard for other books on regional wildflowers.

Book Description
The Blue Ridge Parkway, winding along the backbone of the southern Appalachian Mountains, is cherished for its grand vistas and massive mountain peaks, but nestled in the recreation areas, overlooks, and hiking trails that line its length are a wealth of smaller, equally beautiful gems. Hundreds of species of colorful wildflowers thrive among the misty glades, open fields, and marshy streambanks along the Parkway. J. Anthony Alderman's invaluable Wildflowers of the Blue Ridge Parkway will help the visitor locate, identify, and enjoy many of these seasonal treasures.
Illustrated with close-up color photographs, this field guide covers roughly 275 species of flowers that the casual visitor could expect to encounter along the Parkway. Clearly written descriptions aid in each plant's identification and offer interesting details, including notes on how Native Americans and early settlers used various species for food, medicine, and clothing. Finally, the book includes a tour guide and map that identify 75 of the best, most easily accessible sites for viewing wildflowers along the Parkway, listing by season which species can be found blooming at each site.

Customer Reviews:
Over-rated book of pictures........2002-09-09
I bought this book as a resource guide book, and it didn't give me any information I already didn't know. It is basically a book of pictures that is very cluttered in how it is put together. Although the photos were beautiful, after 1 week, it now is a large paper weight.
It basically just dissapointed me after I took a closer look at it.
Chicago Home Book.......2002-02-20
Nothing comes close to this book. I was going to build my dream house...I needed help, I needed advice....I needed to know who to use and what to ask...The Chicago Home Book brought me to my architect, my builder and my interior designer...my house is the best! The best thing about the book is the photos....beautiful idea generating photos of insides and outsides of the best homes in Chicago and the area. I understand it comes out each year...a new one with new photos...I love to look at what others are doing in their homes.
