wonderful reminder of a gorgeous summer mountain.......1999-06-29
This book has such a wealth of material about the plants of the Colorado mountains. It's not just pictures, though the photos are excellent, and botannical basics but also explanations of where the plants' common names originated and how they have been used medicinally. Its only failing is that it doesn't cover more.

Made our trip.......2006-05-17
I used this book as a basis for a 3 week trip to the Swiss and Austrian Alps and it was invaluable. We stayed in recommended towns, Lauterburnen, Zermatt, and Alpbach and they were perfect jump off spots for hikes. We are day hikers, so it was nice to return to comfortable hotels in the towns. All of the hikes were on the mark for difficulty and scenery. I combined some of the shorter hikes into longer ones and used a couple of other books to find ways to extend some of the hikes in the book. We had a fantastic vacation and owe much of the success to this book.
Walking in Wengen.......2003-06-30
We followed the trails suggested in the Bernese Oberland section. We chose a walk rated as having medium diffiulty for the book. The descent was so steep that my 30-something walks-a-mile-to-work-everyday husband was not able to walk at all the next day because of the extreme pain in his knees. We missed out on all our subsequent hiking. We later learned (from our swiss maps) that the red-white-red trail markings meant "paths for experienced hikers". The yellow markings mean paths for everyone. There was no mention of this distinction in the book. And given the book's title, we would have thought that all of the walks would have been pretty easy. What would we have done if we were older or had our children along? I think hikers should ask their hosts in Switzerland to recommend walks. Our hotel (the Hotel Regina in Wengen) had many easy walks to suggest. I'd get a good map and order something better to read.
walking easyin the swiss and austrian alps.......2002-05-28
A great hiking guide for easy walkers...in the picturesque villages of the alps.. these villlages are easy to get to with public transportationand all hotels cater to summer hikers/walkers. Lifts are nearby and trails are described and well signed and maintained... great for families and hikers of all ages... the book describes the details of the walks with many maps and hotel suggestions. A very user fiendly edition... try it

Book Description
A groundbreaking book about a woman’s kidnapping by Islamic extremists in Yemen.
In Kidnapped in Yemen, Xerox executive Mary Quin details her experiences as an avid traveller and women’s rights advocate — a fulfilling life that led to a tour of Yemen, one of the most conservative Islamic countries in the world. But soon after her arrival, the exotic vacation quickly turned into a nightmare of ambush and captivity, violence and imminent death. She and 15 fellow tourists had been used as human shields in a terrifying gun battle between the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army and Yemeni troops. When the shooting stopped, four hostages and three kidnappers were dead. At the moment when Quin ripped an AK-47 from the hands of a wounded kidnapper and made her escape in the Yemeni desert, she knew her life could never be the same.
Mary found herself preoccupied with trying to understand why the kidnapping occurred. Her fascinating personal journey through murky militant Islam and clandestine terrorist groups led her back to Yemen to try to piece together the puzzle.
Kidnapped in Yemen is the unforgettable first-hand account of this remarkable woman’s unusual story of curiosity, survival and healing.
Book Description
After Xerox executive Mary Quin survived a kidnapping by Islamic extremists in Yemen, she sought to uncover the truth about her abductors and their motives, and documented the process in her groundbreaking book, Kidnapped in Yemen.
Customer Reviews:
Her story is worthy of a magazine article but not a book........2007-02-21
I am currently studying Arabic in Sana'a, Yemen and read this book while preparing for my trip. Now that I am here, this book really annoys me. Quin was part a of tour group being led around the country in what can only be considered spoon-fed tourism. I see these kind of groups walking around Sana'a all the time and it is as if they are moving in a bubble, completely isolated from the native people around them. While being led by the hand around the country, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time but was lucky enough to not be hit in the crossfire. Her story might make a good magazine article but is hardly substantial enough to warrant a book deal. The result leaves the last three-fourths of the book to describe her mundane personal life, "research" of media articles that leads to nothing conclusive, and another week-long, hand-held trip to Yemen.
In my opinion, you shouldn't write about a country unless you actually know something about it. Tim Mackintosh-Smith lived in Yemen for over a decade before writing his book and Steven Caton lived with a Yemeni tribe for a significant amount of time too. I would recommend either of their books over this one.
A Cure for Leftist Lunacy Concerning Islam.......2006-06-15
About this book, Daniel Pipes wrote: In her mid-40s, a successful executive just placed in charge of Xerox's Color Solutions Business Unit, Quin had a taste for exotic travel that took her in late 1998 to Yemen with a group of eighteen other Western tourists. She and they had the misfortune to have their Land Cruisers driven directly into a war between the government and an Islamist outfit called the Aden Abyan Islamic Army (AAIA). The entire tourist group was taken hostage on December 28 and held for more than a day before Yemeni military forces attacked the AAIA, leading to the deaths of four tourists, two terrorists, and one soldier. Quin herself had a close brush with death, but the terrorist holding the gun in her back was hit before he could do damage to her; in an act of daring-do, she managed to pull from his still-live hands his AK-47, an act which left her a changed person. (The mild-mannered, liberal feminist admits that as she exultantly fought for the gun, she had a revelation: "So this is why men like war.")
The story of the capture takes up but the first quarter of Kidnapped in Yemen; the remainder consists of Quin's personal account, mixed with her sleuthing to figure out what had happened to her and her companions. Through assiduous press research plus personal investigations that took her to London's Finsbury Park mosque (to meet the notorious Abu Hamza) as well as a journey back to Yemen and the scene of the crime, she comes up with a coherent account of the tensions that culminated in her seizure. In addition to making available the story of an important terrorist incident, once which foreshadowed the current problem of Western Muslims traveling to Iraq to engage in violence, Quin provides a fine account of her own growth, indeed transformation, as a result of her brief but searing experience as a hostage.
How life changes in one AK-47 moment........2006-05-06
Quin has an appealing writing style and writes on issues of great import. They say you should write what you know, and write real characters. Quin does both.
Any disappointment with the book is more related to how it is billed then the book itself. There are a few chapters here and there that relate less to the events of the kidnapping, and simply more to the events of Quin's life, that could perhaps be edited for a more streamlined work. In a 22 chapter book, it gives nothing away to say that in the 4th chapter she is freed- this book has less to do with being kidnapped, or escaping, than the after-effects of a kidnapping on the life of a woman and geopolitical events.
And for that it is an incredible resource. Though this is an engaging read, it is also nonfiction, and thus provides a great deal of relevent information on life in Yemen and the situation in an Islamist kidnapping (as opposed to a tribal kidnapping). As I contemplate possibly moving to this country, Quin gives solid warnings on possible dangers to be faced there. Additionally, there are a wealth of insights on how an individual deals with the stress of a kidnapping; how it can change their lives and bring to light new possibliies that would never have existed otherwise. Quin is not only an excellent writer but also an excellent researcher. I was continually amazed at her ability to uncover truth, connect seemingly disparate circumstances, and gain information form interviewees by putting them at ease and yet asking the hard questions. If you are interested in the effects of kidnapping, the situation in Yemen, or the events of the modern terrorist world, then this is an requisite book.

Customer Reviews:
Not as Good as Others in the Series.......2006-06-11
From the same series as World's Weirdest Critters, Creepy Stuff and Odd-inary People, Amazing Escapes in not in the same enjoyable league as these others. Too many similar entries for my liking such as numerous Tornado stories where someone was picked up and put down somewhere else, its interesting the first time but a simple dot point entry with person's name and place for the numerous others would have sufficed.
The eight page colour photograph insert in the middle of the book is a great addition although it must have been an afterthought as the same stories are in the rest of the book as well. Some interesting entries inside though such as a guy who used the body of snake instead of a bandage to stop the poison from flowing through his body and the surfer who prevented a shark biting him by ramming his surfboard down its throat.
Not a bad book and if it is a really cheap price pick up a copy. Much better though is Creepy Stuff from this series as well as the much larger Ripley's Believe it or Not Encyclopaedia of the Bizarre.

Book Description
With sixteen other POWs, author Charles McCormac broke out from his POW camp in Japanese-occupied Singapore and began a two-thousand-mile escape from Singapore, through the jungles of Indonesia to Australia. The POWs's escape took a staggering five months and only two out of the original seventeen men survived. This is McCormac'ss compelling true account of one of the most horrifying and amazing escapes in World War Two. It is a story of courage, endurance and compassion, and makes for a very gripping read.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Escape Story.......2006-06-01
Charles McCormac was a wireless operator/air gunner in the RAF assigned to Seletar Airfield, Singapore pre-war. At the time of the Japanese invasion of Singapore he joined forces with a group constructing a roadblock on Bukit Timah Road. These men lost contact with Allied Forces, and did not realise that the British had surrendered on February 15th. The next day they encountered Japanese soldiers, three of whom McCormac killed with his Thompson Submachinegun. McCormac was taken prisoner and placed in a special POW cage at Pasir Panjang. The military and civilian prisoners held there were isolated because the Japanese believed they had committed grave offences against Japan. McCormac was brutally interrogated by the Kempei Tai at their headquarters in the YMCA building on Orchard Road. The Japanese summarily executed groups of prisoners held at Pasir Panjang
in front of the others. McCormac believed the only chance for him and his fellow prisoners was to escape. This is the fantastic story of that escape.

Houdini-His Life and Art by Randi and Sugar.......2005-05-18
This work is packed with pictures of Houdini which include
Teddy Roosevelt to a delegation of clergy at the Hippodrome.
Classic photos of Houdini are depicted in the upside down
position awaiting submersion into the water. In addition, the volume depicts famous cuffs from the "Bastille", Darbies and
flexible Lilly irons. A famous picture of Houdini emerging from
a sealed iron box is depicted at the Hotel Shelton in NYC. The
"Packing Box Escape" shows Houdini emerging from a trick submersion
at sea. The work is worth the price for Houdini enthusiasts everywhere. This work would be perfect for a class project in
history or science.

Book Description
You may think Houdini is a strange name for a hamster, but if you've ever heard of the late Great Houdini, the most amazing escape-artist of all time, you'll understand how I got my name. I'm proud to say that there hasn't been a cage built that can hold me. I can climb, dive, wriggle, squeeze, or gnaw my way out of any prison they came up with. I have to admit that sometimes freedom leads to a bit of trouble--like getting cornered by the cat, ending up in the dog's mouth, or being trapped in the freezing cold of a dark refrigerator. But I won't be stopped! With a whole big world out there to explore, who wants to be held prisoner in a hamster cage?

I, Houdini .......2006-05-11
The person who brought you The Indian in the Cupbord and The Return of the Indian wrote another book ... I,Houdini. That person is Lynne Reid Banks. But there's only one thing he can not escape - from Oggi, when he falls in love with Oggi. If anything will try to stop him he'll be to brave and will fight back no matter what dog, cat, bird- anything.

I, Houdini
I, Houdini is a book about a hampster that tries to get freedom. he's called Houdini because he can get out of any cage even a metal cage.
The author is Lynne Reid Banks I think the author tries to tell you that everyone should have freedom.
I like the way it tells and write about the book. I also like that the hampster inspired the other hampster's. I think that the book was good and it was easy to undersdand. I also think that the book would be better if it was a little more exciting in some parts.
I Houdini.......2004-04-01
I Houdini
I Houdini is a book about a genious hamster who longs for freedom. He's called that because he can escape the very best made cages.
I think the author, Lynne Reid Banks wants you to know that you can do any thing you if you're determined and keep trying.
I liked the way the hamster thought and the way he despised other hamsters. I also liked the way the author discribed the book. It was full of suspense all the way through, and was easy to understand.
Five Stars.......2001-05-23
Houdini is a hamster named after the great Houdini, the most amazing escape artist of all time.So far there is no cage that can hold the great hamster. He lives with three boys as their pet. I think the beginning was very hard to understand because it did not tell the place he was at and the end was too. I hope there will be a sequel. This was the best nove I read in my life. It was very exciting. I could not put it down.
PG 13 Warning.......2000-08-22
Reasonably enjoyable fare sullied by very adult hamster love tryst. Parents should be warned. The book starts off smart and funny and gradually gets darker and darker. I suggest a pre read.
