4 out of 5 stars ...but not exclusively Oregon.......1998-07-29

Although the author is admittedly part of the vibrant botany research community in the Corvallis-Eugene area, many of the species found in Western Oregon are found also in similar habitats in Western Washington and far NW Calif. Very few, if any, plants are described for east of the Cascades. The range for the book is clearly stated in the introduction. Note that as a wetland delineator, I find it to be excellent for a field reference for many typical wetland and fringe species. For specific identification, though, a flora such as Hitchcock's _Vascular Plants of the Pacific Northwest_ (5 vol. set) or the abbreviated _Flora of the Pacific Northwest_ is more appropriate.

3 out of 5 stars Very Oregon-centered.......1998-01-30

I was dissapointed with this book. It is separated by region, the Willamette Valley section being about half the book. If I lived, there, it would have been a great reference. But its coverage of other areas is not complete enough for my taste.

4 out of 5 stars Very good........2006-07-10

For its coverage area, I'd give this book a five, but absent is information from mountain wetlands and those from the east side of the Cascades (although the author makes no pretenses about this). Although I understand the absence of east-side plants, given the number on montane wetlands on the west-side, the lack of coverage plants in these habitats is problematic. Another negative is the presence of photographic plates rather than photographs accompanying plant descriptions. In this day and age of computer publishing technology, there is no excuse for this. That said, the line drawings are excellent and the absence of accompanying photgraphs doesn't detract much. The information presented on each species is tremendous and extremely thorough. Contrary to many other regional wetland guides with which I am familiar, submersed aquatic plants are given appropriate coverage. Maps are crisp and clear and leave little to the imagination. Simply put, if you want to know nearly everything there is to know about a plant that could be found in a lowland west-side wetland, this book will tell you about it. Anyone with interest in wetlands in the coastal Northwest should get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Field Guide for the Wetland Scientist or Hobbyist!.......2000-07-03

I am a wetland scientist and environmental planner. I use Sarah Cooke's book on a regular basis for the identification of wetlands. This book is awesome! The CLEAR pictures, plant keys, and plant descriptions are exteremely useful. The plant field indicator status is a help for the wetland delineator. Sarah's book is a MUST for any outdoor's enthusiast, developer, wetland scientist, or environmental planner!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic guide to identify wetland plants with drawings.......1999-11-20

This is a must for anyone working with wetlands. It has descriptions, drawings and photos of most wetland plants.

4 out of 5 stars This book is helpful.......2003-02-22

Having spent seven weeks in France last year, we are now planning a move there. This little book answered many of the basic questions we have regarding such issues as health care, health insurance, automobile ownership and registration, etc. Because we have been there recently, I recognize that many areas addressed by the author are accurately covered, so I'll be happy to accept her advice about areas with which I have no experience. I enjoyed the upbeat tone of this book. Her attitude makes me all the more anxious to make the move.

3 out of 5 stars La Vie en Noire.......2002-12-06

In preparation for a three-year tour in Paris with my wife and children, I purchased this book and five (!) others on the subject of living in France from Amazon.com. While all have their merits, none have adequate coverage of the French legal system and how to work with the police. It shouldn't have surprised me that, in a country whose history contains episodes such as the Reign of Terror after the French Revolution and collaboration with the Nazis during WWII, there is an official process, called "main courant" in which citizens can "denounce," or file official complaints, against their neighbors for things such as having a baby that cries. Suffice it to say, this process, apparently embedded in the culture for centuries, can result in tremendous prolonged misery and stress, even for a Francophile like me, with many, many wonderful French friends. It might have been easier to deal with summons to the police station, investigations by the mayor's office, visits from social workers - all in less than three months of living here - with some advance prep. Thank goodness I work for a supportive company. Be forewarned!

1 out of 5 stars Should be called the Wealthy Person's Guide, misleading.......2002-10-01

Waste of money for those hopeful expats without unlimited bank accounts. Much of the info is also outdated or seen through the proverbial rose-colored glasses. Often deceptive or misleading--I wasted more time trying to use the info during my move, than I would have just trying to figure things out on my own. Just one example, the author says you can open a bank account during a "preliminary visit" and recommends Banque Transatlantique. Then you find out on your own that you HAVE to be living in France with your green card in order to open an account AND that BT's required [high account balance]. Waste of time and money!!

2 out of 5 stars A Not Too Bright Grown-Up's Guide to France.......2002-08-10

This is real lightweight stuff. Lacks depth and lacks details to be of any help to the serious expat-wannabe. I think many of the reviews full of over-the-top praise must be written by the author's friends or at least by those in the same clique. Skim this book while you're having a latte at Border's and save yourself some money.

5 out of 5 stars Useful for vacations, too.......2001-01-23

This is a really great book -- I wish I'd read it before the first time I went to France as an adult, nearly 5 years ago. Two more trips later, and I can vouch for the accuracy of what's presented in this book.

The writing is straight-forward and the information is well arranged. I also really like the additional comments from other Americans living in France.

This book is useful for anyone planning on spending more than just a few days in France, not just for those planning on living there. The parts about driving and going to the grocery store hit home with me, and now I know why doing laundry there takes *so* long.

From contemporary food design to the spectacle of eighteenth-century aristocratic feasts, this book examines the history of cutlery and dining ritual. A broad offering of [great, beautiful] pictures, and collection of texts that explore the social meanings and fascinating forms of table settings. A truly fascinating book. Somewhat specific, but highly recommended!

              Book Description

The Case Cutlery Dynasty: Tested XX is the extraordinary story of Americas oldest and largest family of knife makers. Since the Civil War, four generations of relations have started over 30 cutlery companies, creating some of the most collected knives in the world. Their products are as rugged as the masters who made them. The Case family was, and remains, a melting pot of personalitiessome as wild as the West they helped to settle. The book is written by a Case descendant, Brad Lockwood, who is an award-winning author of four books and was raised in Little Valley, New Yorkonce known as The Village of Knives. Covering 140 years of artisans in business, all related by blood but fiercely competitive, The Case Cutlery Dynasty shows how history becomes mythology over time, money is sometimes thicker than blood, and how a single family from humble beginnings came to dominate an important American industry.

Was very interesting to find out how many family ties Case had to other companies. Gives a great insight to how foreign imports have affected U.S. manufacturing over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Great piece of historical literature.......2006-01-14

I must warn you that this review may be prejudiced; I am a direct decendant of Jean Case, the son of the last Case decendant still manufacturing knives and a high school acquaintance of the author. Still, I would like to share an objective view of this text from a historical point of view. My undergrad degree is in American Civilization and I am currently completing my Masters in 20th Century American History. I found Brad's book thoroughly engaging and though provoking from this perspective. Following the Case family is a microcosm of westward expansion, the industrial age, the progressive era, the Great Depression through the catastrophic effects of free trade and foreign importation. Historians, sociologists, anthropologists and economists could all benefit from reading this compelling text. I am going to recommend that members of our faculty use it in 19th or 20th cen. Am. Hist. classes.

5 out of 5 stars I never knew any of this.......2005-08-16

I'm a huge fan of author Brad Lockwood, having read all of his novels ("Wink" rules and "Sellout" will be a great film) but I was a bit confused when I saw he had a non-fiction book coming out. Now, I don't know anything about knives, only from using them in my kitchen, but this book is truly amazing. I knew Brad could write, but I never realized how far he could take the story of his family - almost 2 centuries of knife makers - and make a very "testosterone heavy" industry so interesting. Wow! Buy this book - It isn't just about forging steel, it's about the women who put up with their husbands being away for months on end, and somehow kept the family together. A great, fast, truly informative historical read. It took me 3 days. Rereading it took 4.

                Product Description

This book has the widest array of international fighting knives ever assembled! Compiled by three of the most recognized names in historical military knives, Knives of War presents detailed line drawings, rare historical photos and fascinating facts and anecdotes about the edged weapons used by both sides during World Wars I and II, as well as contemporary fighting knives since World War II. A number of World War II veterans who used these weapons on (or behind) the front lines in elite units enthusiastically shared inside information with the authors, and it is presented here for the first time. Of particular interest is some previously unknown information about the U.S. Marine Raider Gung Ho Knife and the Gerber Mark II Combat Knife, as well as a wealth of details on the most famous fighting knife of all, the Fairbairn-Sykes. Among the other edged weapons examined in this book are big knives; knuckle knives; folding and gravity military knives; bayonet and sword conversions; ceremonial hangers; and trench clubs. Gordon Hughes was one of the early pioneers in the United Kingdom in the field of researching and writing about military edged weapons. Robert A. Buerlein is a long-time collector of edged weapons.

Deserving of ongoing mention for either collectors or military war buffs is a survey which holds the widest collection of international fighting knives seen in print. Three top names in historical military knives join forces to provide line drawings, historical photos where available, and fighting facts which pair history with techniques notes. It simply can't be beat!

                  Book Description

The book is based on the remarkable collection formed over the last forty five years by Bill Brown, one that is particularly strong in the early periods not often represented in museum collections.

The book is divided into two parts: Part I contains chapters on the evolution of cutlery design; the ownership of cutlery; the use of cutlery at table, and the etiquette of dining. Part II illustrates the development of eating implements across five millenia. Introductory texts to each chronological period cover advances in design and usage and the influences from Europe. Descriptive captions accompany the illustrations of over six hundred pieces, especially photographed for the book.

The resulting publication provides both an invaluable reference source for museums, collectors, and dealers as well as an important contribution to our knowledge of the presentation of meals at table.
