Even though the information in this book is almost nine years old, it is still relevant and useful. People tell me so, and I find myself going back to see what I said when I get questions about label length, typesize, levels of information, or how long it takes to write. Do not buy the other book listed here, Making Museum Labels, because it is out of date (and out of print), and all the good content is in this one.

        Book Description

Art made to attach to buildings or to be given away? Wearable art for street demonstrations or art that sets up a booth at a trade show? This is the art of the interventionists, who trespass into the everyday world to raise our awareness of injustice and other social problems. These artists don't preach or proselytize; they give us the tools to form our own opinions and create our own political actions. The Interventionists, which accompanies an exhibit at MASS MoCA, serves as a handbook to this new and varied work. It's a user's guide to art that is exciting, provocative, unexpected, inspiring (artistically and politically), and fun. From Michael Rakowitz's inflatable homeless shelter and William Pope.L's "Black Factory" truck with pulverizer, gift shop, and giant inflatable igloo to the Biotic Baking Brigade's political pie-throwing, the art of The Interventionists surveys a growing genre and offers a guide for radical social action.

The book classifies the artists according to their choice of tactics: the Nomads, who create mobile projects; Reclaim the Streets, artists who act in public places; Tools for Resistance: Ready to Wear, artists who produce fashion for political action; and the Experimental University, artists whose work engages pedagogy and theory. The accompanying text includes essays by noted scholars putting the work in a broader cultural and social context as well as texts by the artists themselves.

                      Book Description

The religious fervor known as the Ghost Dance movement was precipitated by the prophecies and teachings of a northern Paiute Indian named Wovoka (Jack Wilson). During a solar eclipse on New Year's Day, 1889, Wovoka experienced a revelation that promised harmony, rebirth, and freedom for Native Americans through the repeated performance of the traditional Ghost Dance. In 1890 his message spread rapidly among tribes, developing an intensity that alarmed the federal government and ended in tragedy at Wounded Knee. The Ghost Dance phenomenon is well known, but never before has its founder received such full and authoritative treatment. Indispensable for understanding the prophet behind the messianic movement, Wovoka and the Ghost Dance addresses for the first time basic questions about his message and life. This expanded edition includes a new chapter and appendices covering sources on Wovoka discovered since the first edition, as well as a supplemental bibliography. Michael Hittman is the author of Corbett Mack: The Life of a Northern Paiute (Nebraska 1996). He is chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus.

                      Book Description

Twenty years after Dance with Wolves, Father Mark Thomas finds a life with the Cheyenne River Sioux and a beautiful woman named Fawn more compelling than his Jesuit training. But as Father Thomas' new life is beginning, the old life of the Sioux is about to end: one more hard winter and the people will starve.

The Sioux's last hope is Wovka, a Piaute prophet who promises that if all dance his Ghost Dance then the buffalo will return and the white man will vanish from the earth.

Is Wovoka a savior? Will the Ghost Dance lead the people to salvation, or to the tragedy called Wounded Knee?

5 out of 5 stars This is a fine little novel........1999-05-22

This is a well-written, exciting novel which accurately portrays the worldview of Native Americans of the plains. It deserves five stars. I use it as a first-book-read in a Native American Religions course. It never fails to interest students in learning more about Native Americans, as it gives their history specific, three-dimensional characters, both compelling and repelling. Since I teach students, black and white, who have little understanding of the Native American experience or point of view, I am grateful to Earl Murray for providing such an easily accessible, romantic, action-oriented novel. It makes my intellectual seduction of them much easier. When I get to explaining specific worldview assumptions of Native Americans, it is always helpful to refer back to, for instance, the visions of Fawn-that-goes-dancing or Black Robe (Father Thomas). I highly recommend this small novel.

Consumers are blitzed with millions of images every day. Companies hoping to grab a consumer's attention need a memorable, eye-catching design-whether for a logo, an identity system, an in-depth promotional campaign, or a magazine that needs to stay fresh and strong month after month.

Now as a competitively priced paperback, Graphic Design That Works looks at examples of logos, identities, promotions, brochures, and magazine design that have proven, successful track records. Quick-hit copy explores these designs from early conceptual stages to initial drafts and final execution, so whether you're a seasoned designer or a newcomer to the field, you can understand how and why the design came to be.

Also included are tips from the experts who put these designs on the map. They tell what succeeded and what failed in their attempts to create designs that really work.

1 out of 5 stars Design Trumps Function?.......2007-03-11

For a design book, it would be fabulous except for the fact that you need a magnifying glass in order to read it (what appears to be 5pt type set in gray). For this reason, when design and layout of the book negates the purpose (function) of the book, it is rendered useless. Rockport is well known for its beautiful graphic design books, but I have noticed several of their other titles also designed this way. Sorry I bought it, sold it for a loss.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Almost unreadable.......2007-02-02

Most of the type in this book has been done using a size 6 Font which as far as I am concerned makes it practically unreadable. The content may be great, but I can't tell as I refuse to ruin my eyes trying to read type this small. It remainds me of the disclaimers that advertisers use at the bottom so you can't read them. Unless you absolutely must have this book, I would strongly advise finding another one

                                      5 out of 5 stars strong examples.......2007-01-29

this is a great book, it give a very nice examples about the best graphics in the market and how it was made. It can inspire you.

1 out of 5 stars Great for Big City Designers, but not for me.......2007-01-22

I produce newsletters for non-profit's on a true shoestring budget. I am constantly searching for inspiration that is do-able on a shoestring budget (no color, no fancy paper, no long-winded discussions about the "role" of the designer - "sheesh") but found literally nothing in this book helpful to me, that makes the book worth keeping on my shelf.

If you have big budgets and staff, this book might be useful for you.

When going with two colors is a "challenge" you know that the designers whose work is being held up as the best of design really have no clue about the challenges faced by those working for needy but worthwhile agencies who cannot afford to hire "designers" but need to get information out, and attempt to do so in a visually pleasing and accessible way.

While showcasing some fine work by many designers across the globe, nothing additional is offered. It's purely a reproduction of some nice work. Okay for inspiration, but I see no value added.

The clincher is the book design. For a book dealing with design, it's horrendously amateur...

I dont really like the content, the designs are not really creative, the one who design or did the book layout, didnt
even seem like an artist. I would have returned the book, if the shipping fee did not cost more than the book itself. You can just check out the other books on brochure designing, that might be better.

3 out of 5 stars An okay presentation of different genres.......2005-01-12

This is a decent collection of different works, offering a wide array of samples to, well, sample. Nothing too radical here, nothing too memorable, nothing too exemplary of really anything. Kind of a safe play in presenting nice designs of safe works. Worth perusing, perhaps not purchase, though?

I give them credit for including descriptions of the product and why the designers went with certain designs in the end. But, in the end, it was still just a brief look over a bunch of different brochures with nothing. If you're looking for a rainbow of styles, this is for you.

                                      Book Description

Consumers are blitzed with millions of images every day. Companies hoping to grab a consumer?s attention need a memorable, eye-catching design?whether for a logo, an identity system, an in-depth promotional campaign, or a magazine that needs to stay fresh and strong month after month.

Graphic Design That Works looks at examples of logos, identities, promotions, brochures, and magazine design that have proven, successful track records. Quick-hit copy explores these designs from early conceptual stages to initial drafts and final execution, so whether you?re a seasoned designer or a newcomer to the field, you can understand how and why the design came to be.

Also included are tips from the experts who put these designs on the map. They tell what succeeded and what failed in their attempts to create designs that really work.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Unreadable.......2007-02-06

If you are looking for a book that you can read, study and learn from, keep looking. The type in this book is so unbelieveably small as to make it practically unreadable. If you thought that the old "Small print at the bottom of the page" was small, you should see this book. My advice, avoid it like the Plauge!
