5 out of 5 stars A Great Wild Shrub Book, Revised at Last!.......2001-09-11

I wore out two copies of the 1980 paperback edition of this book and for ten years I've had to refer to my tattered collection of unbound pages secured by paperclips! I'm thrilled to see this revised edition. As New England natural history enthusiasts know, there are very few identification guides which cover native and wild-growing shrubs of the northeast - even the latest Peterson Field Guide now only treats trees and not shrubs. This book is thorough, treating even willows with enough depth to aid the amateur naturalist, and has detailed illustrations which beautifully capture the colors and textures of shrubs' leaves, flowers and fruits. My botanist friends have pointed out that the book is not wholly consistent or thorough in delineating botanical features, but unweildy technical books such as Britain and Brown's volumes are available for such detail. I have searched the market for years and have never found a better all around guide to shrubs for the not quite professional naturalist than Marilyn Dwelley's. The descriptions of tree species are also excellent, and full of fascinating, not commonly known, bits of information, but good tree books are much easier to find. If you want to learn New England Shrubs, a challenging, rewarding, and not impossible task, this is the book!

4 out of 5 stars fine field guide to the leaves of northern New England.......2003-08-08

This is a helpful guide for identifying trees and shrubs in the New England region. After a brief introduction on technique, over 120 species are described. Each entry is two pages -- one a b&w line drawing of the leaves/needles, and the other a text description that includes the common and scientific name as well as information about the specimen's range, habitat, profile, branching, shoots, leaves, buds, twigs, bole, bark and fruit. Species are organized by taxonomic family and include:yew, pine, willow, walnut, hazel, beech, elm, rose, sumac, holly, maple, dogwood, heath, honeysuckle and others. The book concludes with helpful identification shortcuts, a reading list and a good index.

This is not a perfect book: the introduction is helpful but not terribly informative, there are no maps, there are no color photographs (how about a color insert of transitional leaves?), and the coloring on the cover and spine make it almost impossible to read the title of the book; however, this is otherwise a solid and extremely helpful field guide that will add to your enjoyment of the New England forest, whether it's in the backwoods or your backyard.

2 out of 5 stars and where might I find these dive sites?.......2001-09-18

Agree with the "pretty but shallow" assessment below. On a recent trip to the Abacos, found it completely useless without map coordinates. There must be a market out there for dive guides without maps or GPS coordinates (people who don't actually want to dive? the clairvoyant?) but...

5 out of 5 stars Well organized and thorough.......2001-07-04

I've just used the new dive guide by Lonely Planet on my recent dive trip to the Bahamas (Eleuthera). It was an excellent resource - solid dive site descriptions of 108 sites, which were organized by dive region. For someone not familiar with the Bahamas prior to going there, I found the book an invaluable tool for helping me plan where to go.The sidebars were entertaining to read as well (and useful), and the color photos are pretty inspiring too. Recommended highly!

2 out of 5 stars Pretty, but too shallow..........2001-05-28

There's some good things about this book: in typical Lonely Planet style you've got great general travel information for the area (which if I really wanted, I'd buy a general travel book).

It does also cover a large number of sites - though is still far from comprehensive.

And it has some nice additional information occasionally through the book.

Two main peeves though. And they're killers:

                  - Each description is a paragraph, or two at most. You can't tell me very much about a dive site in so few words.

                  - There are no maps / diagrams for specific dive sites (just area overview maps) - a dive guide fails totally without these.

It's a pretty book, but to be any use you need to include maps and more detail per site (if this was done it could be forgiven for not being totally comprehensive).

In short, it's nice, but it's no use as a tool for researching a dive holiday.

What'S further is I now own two of these (Red Sea and Bahamas) - I certainly will not buy another.

                      Book Description

For true traditionalists, here are the first complete plans and detailed building instructions for authentic Aleutian Kyak--the ancient voyaging and hunting craft of the nomadic Unangan of Alaska. Based on originals in museums in Oregon and California, these lightweight (35 Pounds, 17 feet long) skin-on-frame sea kayaks can be built to fit the owner's exact dimensions, using simple hand tools and readily obtainable materials, for less than $200, including paddles, spray skirt, and traditional paddling jacket. Known as Baidarkas among the Russian settlers of Alaska, these unique native American craft evolved over centuries to carry heavy loads swiftly over long distances in wind and wave--ideal for modern sea kayakers looking for an alternative to plastic replicas of short-range Greenland-style boats.

5 out of 5 stars A unique book on ancient boat-construction!.......2007-02-25

Within this book you will find the procedures for building a kayak in the traditional manner...but with a modern twist! I doubt you will use seal-hide for the exterior, but the ancient method of constructing the hull is well portrayed within these pages. As an amateur boat-builder, particularly of kayaks and sailboats, I found this book to be a unique gem among many similar titles.
I have always admired the ingenious craftsmanship of the Inuit people, and other dwellers of the Arctic and Tundra regions. Surviving in the most savage climate on Earth, they developed a unique and complex culture. Those people who live in such challenging environments invariably possess the sharpest wit for improvisation with limited resources.

                      5 out of 5 stars a profound experiance.......2001-04-11

Having built the boat in this book was a profound experiance for me. I now understand the workings of a kayak more intimatly and will never look at a plastic, fiberglass, kevlar or even plywood kayak the same. There were one or two times in the building of this boat that were frustrating, but I just stepped back took a day or so off, thought about it and worked my way through it. Mr. Brinck's instructions were as good as you can get, trying to explain as complex a project as this. His spiritual insights in the text were quite insprirational. I love my boat...it paddles wonderfully...and I am now a boat builder for life!

                      5 out of 5 stars Baidarka construction.......2000-02-21

I just finished building a traditional west greenland sea kayak. I can't wait to move on and build a baidarka. This book is an important guide for the traditional construction of an Aleutian Baidarka. This is an awesome book for anyone interested in building an authentic Aleutian Baidarka whether they have experience working with wood or not. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful work with tradition........2000-01-31

This book helped me build a spectacular kayak. Beware, it can change your life. I am now a boatbuilder. Brinck's traditional methods are inspirational. The text left me with a few questions, but most of them were solved with re-reading, walking around the project a few times, or finding the Baidarka listserv on the net. Again, beware! I've just completed a canvas covered Greenland kayak using G. Putz book, and I picked this one up along the way. Of four paperback books by the same publisher, this one is the least useful. There's a lot to be said about attempting to replicate native boat-building - and the author deserves praise for his research and efforts. However, I have trouble understanding why you would make a canvas covered boat on a frame that can't possibly be as good as an Aleutian's work when you exert just as much effort in a similar boat with a western frame. It seems to me also that this particular boat is a first-time effort by the author and there are things about it that make it seem unstable and uneven. The hull dimensions, for example, are not exact which can make a tippy boat or one that drags to one side. For a canvas covered boat I would strongly recommend G. Putz's book or for a strip boat, Mr. Shade's. Both individuals have built many many boats and their narratives are much more detailed.

Even if you love art, love cool pictures, love computers, and love your graphics job, says designer and author Shane Hunt, you still want to get your work done quickly and painlessly. Hunt provides you with time-saving tools and tips on working smart in CorelDRAW 9 F/X and Design. This graphics- and content-rich book allows beginning or advanced users to take charge and master CorelDRAW 9, the powerful object-oriented graphics suite.

Almost every page includes a "tips" section--these range from bitmap explanations and exporting to duotone hints and tricks for color. Along with the manageable step-by-step projects in the book, Hunt includes a brilliant color studio and visual gallery filled with final images (these can also be found on the CD-ROM) that include corresponding sites in the book. For example, she directs readers to "find something you like, point finger, exclaim 'Cool!' then flip to the chapter that explains the process. Enjoy!" Some of the tutorials take you from past images--in one section, from the '30s and '40s--and show you how to add sci-fi pulp and comic-book style touches to your designs.

The accompanying CD-ROM is packed with tutorial files in native CorelDRAW formats, animation files, button and interface design samples, clip-art pics, plug-ins, graphics goodies, and f/x utilities. This is a great resource for graphics designers ready to plunge into the world of splashy creations and advance their careers with a deeper understanding of CorelDRAW 9. --Brooke Gilbert

Topics covered: CorelDRAW interface and toolset, new features of CorelDRAW 9 (bitmaps, effects filters, Artistic Media tool, outlines to objects conversion, Interactive Mesh Fill tool), and animation (using CorelDRAW and PHOTO-PAINT).

                      Book Description

The only book available that teaches the trend-setting, edgy illustrations that can be created with CorelDRAW -- chisel images on rock, design tattoos, master comic-book-style drawing. Other books are traditional, tools-based tutorials. CorelDRAW 9 f/x and design appeals to the thousands of users who want to take the application to the next level and break out of the box. Features a 64-page Color Studio chock full of cutting-edge industrial, psychedelic, bizarre, and provocative illustrations that are also available on the CD-ROM. Updates the successful CorelDRAW 8 f/x, which received rave reviews such as this one: "In this book Hunt shows you how to use Corel to do some awesome designs. Its reverse approach makes it unique. You can pick a design you like from the color section and then look up how it's done. I love that. Plus: Every piece of artwork is on the included CD. Why can't life always be that easy?"

I absolutely LOVE this book. It's opened up a whole new world of possibilities with Corel Draw 9. By the time I've experimented with all of the tutorials, I'm sure I'll be quite the whizz kid. Unfortunately, I'll have to do it all without any help from the CD. There is no INSTALL.EXE on the CD. Therefore, I am unable to install it. Although I can access its contents through my CD-ROM, using it that way tends to freeze up my system and it's just not worth the aggravation. But the book itself is a real jewel and I truly enjoy reading and learning from it. Shane Hunt's writing style immediately puts the reader at ease. This alone is worth its weight in gold and is a rare and welcome commodity in "How-To" books. Thanks Shane!

This is the best how to book I have ever worked through. It is a must have for Corel Draw 9 and 10 users who have never learned all the hidden secrets and shortcuts to this program. After learning each and every technique in this book, my talents in graphic design have multiplied greatly! I find my self creating amazing graphics I never would have believed possible. Thanks Shane Hunt for writing this incredible book!

After trying several of the web based tutorials I decided to try Shane's book. One of the best things about this book is that it takes an artistic approach in the instruction. I have used what I have learned from this book in all my projects to date. Shane has made me a more creative Corel Draw user. After several years of just using Corel Draw I am now creating on a level I never could have attained before. One should know the basics of Corel Draw before using this book. If you know how to access the menu commands then you should get this book. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2000-08-01

This book works through some great effects in cookbook style, such that if you follow the recipe, you can great some fantastic results. Although I am using CorelDraw 8 LE on the Mac, and am a beginner when it comes to graphic arts, I was still able to amaze friends and family with the output!

The written style is clear, concise and easily understood, and the side bars are very informative. The color pictures in the center of the book are helpful in defining the target look, and the enclosed CD with electronic "recipes" and results is great.

This is now in my top 10 technical book list!

The CorelDraw 9: FX and Design is one of the best books on the market to get the most out of your software package. Author Shane Hunt knows his stuff. He presents facts, tips and creative ideas in a fun and entertaining way. This book is exactly what I needed to teach me the 'how' of CorelDraw 9 and at the same time teach incredible creative tools I can use right away. The Official Guides are fine but this book gives you the tools to think not only 'outside the box' but outside the stratosphere.

1 out of 5 stars Cultural appropriation at its worst!.......2006-12-12

First off, caveat emptor: This book offers very little in terms of actual ideas or suggestions for planning a wedding, "non-traditional" or otherwise. It starts of looking into astrology and astro-cartography and how you can use them to help select an auspicious place and time for you nuptials. However, it offers little actual information of this, instead pointing to other sources.
This leads into the bulk of the book, which is more or less an overview of different cultural traditions around marriage, from the Fez of Morrocco to the Guatemalan village of Chichicastenango. This does offer some fascinating information from an anthroplogical perspective, but in a wedding planning book, it comes across as suggesting that it is not only Ok, but a Good Idea to plan your wedding as a multi-cultural smorgasboard, picking and choosing "fascinating" traditional practices from whatever cultures strike your fancy. The information given is cursory at best, no one culture gets enough representation to actually be useful to someone looking for guidance in planning a wedding in keeping with (let's say) their Basque ancestry. Unfortunately for the author, cultural traditions are embodied with meaning by the context of the culture they arise from, and simply do not translate well to a wedding planners buffet table. And while this book is not clearly written enough that it entirely endorses this sort of cultural appropriation, the implication is is clear. As the back cover says, this is supposed to be "A uniquely entertaining and eclectic sourcebook for desigining a wedding ritual."
Ironically, the cultural smorgasboard of "ideas" presented here is constantly self-contradicting and often as cultural backwards and patriarchal as any of the "traditional" western ceremonies the book is supposed to be getting away from. When you read on one page that "The Morroccans contend that Sunday is a good time to commence married life because it's the start of a new week, but don't introduce a bride to your home on Tuesday (say the Tsul tribe) or Friday (advise the Ait Warain)" and on the next page read that you should "Marry Tuesday, Marry for Health", well it gets to the point where it is no longer interesting, only laughable.
Mr. Leviton has compiled some fascinating research in the volume, and deserves some recognition on that basis. However, before it is actually a useful and engaging read, much less a good wedding planning guide, the author ought to read up a little on the perils of cultural appropriation, and also submit to the sword of a vicious editor or two!
Until then, this book does more harm than good.

                      3 out of 5 stars good book.......2004-05-17

I enjoyed this book. As for another reviewer's oppinion that it's all about astrology, did you get past the second chapter???
This book is well researched and presents information from many cultures. It isn't suited to someone who is looking to add quirky traditions to their ceremony but more to someone who wants to understand what the rite of passage (the wedding) means globally. It addresses all the stages from engagemnet to the ceremony itself. A very good read.

2 out of 5 stars All about Astrology.......2004-03-07

We have been looking for a tasteful, modern alternative to traditional religious ceremonies - something that would express our joy about being together, yet still be palatable to our families. This is NOT such a guide. This book is all about astrology.

Would you like to know the most auspicious date and place on earth for your wedding? Then you need astrocartography, and to consult an astrologer for your wedding date, as the author did.

Other books have better coverage of wedding traditions around the globe, but this book is a rich source of wedding SUPERSTITIONS. Did you know that in ancient England, it was considered bad luck to marry on a Saturday?

The book was nothing like what I expected from the blurbs on Amazon. If you are trying to plan a beautiful and modern wedding ceremony, I recommend Weddings from the Heart by Daphne Rose Kingma.

                      4 out of 5 stars Intelligently written.......2002-02-16

It is so refreshing to find an intelligently written book on weddings. No mind numbing, cookie cutter fluff here. While it could use an index, the information was presented sequentially, beginning with traditional ways of choosing a mate and the task of choosing the wedding date. Although a lot of information is presented, it is not a difficult read.

                      2 out of 5 stars Written like a thesis........1999-05-08

Although this book has quite a bit of information, it doesn't provide much for actual application. It was time consuming and not good for a bride trying find ideas for her wedding. What this book needs is a good index and some copy editing.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A252083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Current methods of aircraft conceptual design lack the ability to quickly generate detailed analysis, particularly of nontraditional designs such as blended wing body craft. This study developed a method to resolve this problem by creating a flexible, parametrically driven conceptual model in an object-oriented, adaptive modeling environment from which analysis and optimization may rapidly be performed. These object-oriented techniques are incorporated into a traditional conceptual design process. All objects inherit dependency-tracking and demand-driven calculations. Design Analysis was performed within the modeling language and utilized interfaces to other software packages. A detailed mesh, suitable for input into finite element analysis programs, was developed from the less detailed, geometric mesh created by the modeling program. The output from finite element analysis forms the basis for rapid changes in subsequent iterations of the design process. The demonstration focuses on a single parametric design model which transforms a conventional transport design into a blended wing body design. This single design is controlled by a limited - set of geometric variables and produces optimal structural weight estimations while the designer addresses volumetric and cost requirements.
