Critical praise for two of the brightest lights in the retail travel industry… "Carnival attracted passengers largely because of the effort [Bob] Dickinson oversaw to change the image of cruising from a pastime for the rich to a vacation for the masses. That change in consumer perception was perhaps the single most important event in the development of the modern cruise business." —Miami Herald "Andy Vladimir, marketing superstar, living legend, award-winning professor and scholar, is known as `Mr. Quotable Quote' by industry professionals everywhere. His business and academic achievements easily put him on top." —Anthony G. Marshall Dean, School of Hospitality Management Florida International University

5 out of 5 stars Great Insiders View of the Business.......2007-07-23

This is a fascinating account of the US-based Cruise business. Now in its second edition, the authors contrast their views of a decade ago with where the business is today. The strongest part of the book in my view is the discussion of the different ways the cruise lines have built - and plan to continue to build their businesses. Interestingly the clarity of the strategic thinking varies from the clear and focussed (Carnival) to some other, weaker, waffle. Reading this it becomes clear that Carnival's growth to number one has been no accident. Other parts of the book are not as strong (the history section has some schoolboy howlers) or not as interesting to this reader (how to run a Travel Agency). Nonetheless, an invaluable insight into the cruise business, and a lot better than some of the other gossip-driven 'histories' out there.

      5 out of 5 stars drcruise.......2007-07-19

Another hit by the authors whose book provides insight into the workings and the "goings on" of the cruise industry. This book should be read by all interested in the cruise industry to include practioners, travel agents and academics.

      4 out of 5 stars Facsinating!.......2002-10-02

This book provides a facinating behind the scenes look at the cruise industry, from the ship to the home office to the travel agent. I was expecially surprised on how broad based it was, although Carnival (Bob Dickinson is president of that company) does play a prominent role. For example, a section on advertising features old Carnival ads. However, the book does include quotes from presidents of all major cruise lines, and the book freely uses examples from other major cruise lines. That said, it is a great book if you want a behind the scenes look at the industry, or work in the travel industry.

      3 out of 5 stars definitely a text book.......2002-02-12

As a previous reviewer noted, thes is very much a business text book focusing on the cruise industry, probably aimed at people working in (or preparing for working in) travel agencies. There is some interesting general information in the early chapters, but then gets dry quickly.

5 out of 5 stars The best I've read about the cruise industry.......1999-08-10

I have to admit I was a bit concerned about an "impartial" book about the cruise industry written by the president of the world's largest participant. I was dead wrong. Bob Dickinson and Andy Vladimir have written a no-holds-barred, painfully honest account of the state of today's cruise industry. They don't mince words when it comes to the actual decline of cruisers! They finish up with a case study of an ideal cruise only agency that makes sense.

          Book Description

John Nelson was an entrepreneur born in the mid-seventeenth century--a man, in Richard Johnson's words, "operating ahead of the government and settled society from which he came," who "responded to conventions and conditions derived from several different and often competing cultures." For Nelson, this meant trading out of Boston to the French and Indians of Canada, pursuing his family's dreams of the proprietorship of Nova Scotia, and promoting schemes of espionage and military conquest on both sides of the Atlantic. In the course of a long and adventurous life, Nelson served as middleman between Canada and New England; led an uprising that toppled the royal government of Massachusetts in 1689; and passed years in French prisons, including the Bastille, and then at court in London as a player in the complex European diplomacy of the time. Nelson's career reveals in bold colors the political and economic pressures exerted upon colonial America by the expansion and bitter conflict of European empires--he himself complained of being "crusht between the two Crownes." Yet it also shows how one man fashioned a life as "spy, speculator, multinational merchant, memorialist, politician, prisoner, parent, friend, and gentleman." Gracefully written and widely researched, the book is both a fine example of the new Atlantic history and a vivid recounting of the fortunes of an exceptional individual.

5 out of 5 stars Letter from Benjamin Hatcher.......2004-11-27

Benjamin Hatcher of Boston writes a long letter describing his participation in the Boston Tea Party, to William Yancy of South Carolina, June 18, 1774. Everything seems authentic, with nice illustrations.

In fine detail, the story of the Boston Tea Party is a bit different than what we know today as the legend, but the essentials are the same: the colonists boarded three British ships and threw the crates of tea overboard, due to a tax on tea which they objected to.

Benjamin Hatcher is a seller of tea and makes it clear why he opposes the tax: people can't afford it. There's a black market in tea imported from other sources, while the Tea Party is going on.

          Interesting and well written.

          5 out of 5 stars Boston Light........2007-10-05

What was it like for the people who tended the lamps in lighthouses and guided ships to safety?

Thomas Knox was the son of a lighthouse keeper and had been in a lighthouse in Boston Harbor all his life. The colonists set fire to the lighthouse in 1775, to keep the British from getting it. The British repaired it, but when they left Boston, they burned it again! After the Revolution, the lighthouse was rebuilt on the same spot.

Lighthouses have been around since 280 BC, but Boston Light was the first lighthouse in America and eleven more eventually were added along the East Coast by 1776. Differences in colors and patterns helped ships navigators and captains to see where they were.

But a lighthouse keeper's life can be dangerous, when he has to climb outside the tower for repair work and rescue sailors. Lighthouse keepers were well paid, given a house, garden fire wood and opportunities to earn more as a harbor pilot. It took a special kind of person to do this job.

This book is filled with wonderful illustrations, contains a glossary and a website for more reading.

4 out of 5 stars A look into the life of a Puritan.......2000-07-10

Samuel Sewall was one of the few early Americans to record his day to day thoughts in a diary. It ia a very intimate look into his life as he never intended for anyone to ever read it. This gives us a unique and accurate glimpse into the mind of a second-generation New England Puritan. "The Diary and Life of Samuel Sewall" highlights Sewall's shift away from religion and toward a more political ideology. Samuel Sewall was also one of the judges in the infamous Salem witch trials. Yazawa has reproduced specific years from Sewall's diary in their entirety. In effort to bridge the gaps between years, Yazawa has included several introductions. Overall, this was an enjoyable and informative read. It brings the Puritan world to life throught the eyes of an influential Boston man.

4 out of 5 stars Another good book from "The American Adventure" series........2004-10-31

This is the tenth book in The American Adventure series. This series tells about the lives of children from many generations of a fictional family throughout American history, from the settling of Plymouth by the Pilgrims through the end of World War II.

It's March of 1770 in Boston, and tensions are high, as the Patriots grow angrier each day that British soldiers continue to occupy Boston. Ten-year-old Stephen Lankford is very worried about his impulsive twelve-year-old sister, Lydia, who taunts the soldiers without thinking about the consequences. Lydia, a determined Patriot, accused Stephen of being a Loyalist, but all he wants is for his family to be safe. He feels the family is divided. His two uncles are at odds, as one is a Loyalist and the other a Patriot. Stephen's own father, who owns a newspaper, sides with the Patriots but is against the extreme measures the Sons of Liberty, the group Stephen's older brother William belongs to, want to take. When the Boston Massacre divides Boston even more, Stephen begins to fear his family will never come back together.

Readers who enjoyed the other books in the American Adventure series will be sure to want to read this one as well, as it continues the story of the Lankford family from the previous book, "Boston Revolts." I also recommend this book to new readers who enjoy historical fiction about Revolutionary War times. I look forward to reading more books from this series.

4 out of 5 stars Okay book from the American Adventure series........2004-11-18

This is the twelfth book in The American Adventure series. This series tells about the lives of children from many generations of a fictional family throughout American history, from the settling of Plymouth by the Pilgrims through the end of World War II.

Eight-year-old Paul Lankford's father has been away fighting in the American Revolution for most of Paul's life. Because he has only seen his father a few times in the past six years, Paul barely knows him. So when the war finally ends in 1781 and Paul's father returns home, he has a difficult time adjusting to the change. Paul's father is very strict, and doesn't seem to understand Paul at all. Paul would like to be a shipbuilder, like his Uncle Ethan, but he fears telling his father he doesn't want to follow in his footsteps as a printer. Over the next two years, Paul struggles to form a better relationship with his father and gain the courage to determine his own future.

This was probably among my least favorite books in the American Adventure series. It wasn't a bad book, but I found it hard to get interested in, because it didn't really have a strong plot. It also seemed to have more historical details and less story in it than some of the other books in the series. However, I would recommend it to readers who, like me, want to read the entire series.

5 out of 5 stars The American Victory.......2003-08-02

This is a very good book about how the Revolutionary War ended. I think this book should be read by all people who love American history. All the other books in the American Adventure series are really good also.

3 out of 5 stars A disappointing book from the American Adventure series........2005-01-08

This is the fourth book in The American Adventure series. This series tells about the lives of children from many generations of a fictional family throughout American history, from the settling of Plymouth by the Pilgrims through the end of World War II.

It's 1635 in Boston, and life for fourteen-year-old Phillip Smythe and his family, which had changed so much for the better, is turned upside down by a series of disasters. Phillip had been so happy -- his frail younger sister, Leah, was finally healthy, and his dream of becoming an apothecary's apprentice had come true. But a terrible cyclone that strikes Boston changes all that. Phillip's father's carpentry shop is destroyed, and Mr. Smythe must travel to England to earn enough money to rebuilt. Shortly after Mr. Smythe leaves, Phillip's older brother, John, becomes involved in drinking and gambling, and then family's home burns down. Even more hardship and tragedy follows, and Phillip feels as if his dreams have died forever.

This was probably my least favorite of the American Adventure books I have read so far. I was happy to see it was a direct sequel to the previous book in the series, Dream Seekers. However, I was disappointed by how much tragedy happened in this story, in particular the death of a character which I felt to be very unnecessary; enough bad had already happened. I would only recommend this book to readers who want to read the entire series. I personally feel the ending of Dream Seekers was a better conclusion to the story of Phillip and his family.

                5 out of 5 stars Can't Put it down!.......1999-06-26

I love the series! But Fire By Night was one of the best I've read out of 13! The book was very exciting. The authours make you feel like you are really in that time your living like the people in the book. I sure felt like I was really in it! I like it because it tells you a story that is Ficitional but at the same time it tells you about history and God. I think every one should read these books even adults! The book was very good!

                  Book Description

"Flip Designs" will change the way you see. Out of everyday images patterns evolve and strange things begin to happen. Outlines of butterflies emerge from leaves, hazy faces peer out from rusty watermarks, birds take flight from daubs of paint, luscious red lips are born from a hammer and a sickle. Materials transmute. Stone becomes parchment, sand assumes the texture of canvas, red tulips ignite like a bush fire, and spring flowers in a meadow stand out like bright embroidery on a medieval tapestry.
