Classic Michelin.......2007-09-13
I just received my copy, but I have not yet used it while traveling.
It looks like this 2007 edition is up to the standards of the classic green guides, dense with cultural information, printed on fine quality paper, and in a wonderful format easy for toting along and reading on a train.
However, it's not vinyl bound as Amazon's listing states...it appears to be a paperback (which is what Michelin's own site admits to). It's just fine for traveling, but while other companies are moving to plasticized bindings that are water proof and wear well after being shoved into backpacks and backpockets, Michelin seems to have taken a small step back. Don't misundertand, the quality of binding is excellent, it would just be a little bit more excellent if the cover were really vinyl. Also, no map is included (as they did with green guides in the old days), but that's not a big loss given the many small but fine maps inside.
This book is a pleasure to hold and read.

We have numerous guides for Belgium (because we live here) and there's nothing like the Michelin guide. It's the only one that really delves into the details of the architecture and history of the many fantastic buildings here, and it provides thoughtful and well-planned circuits for tourism. It's for the visitor who really wants to know the when-who-whys of what they see. (But you can't plan your light-hearted shopping visits with this book. You'll need a second guidebook for that.)
Too bad they switched to these new 'updated' book covers. The old ones had more class!

I put this in my cart on April 5th at $13. When I went to check out on April 8th, the price had been raised to the list price of $20.
Its Hideous.......2003-01-13
I've used a fair number of travel guides, and this one is destined for the trash long before I take my trip. I find it extremely user UNfriendly, and short on lots of vital information. While there are some nice maps and some pieces of good data, the organization is appalling. Instead of a division by regions, it is in encyclopedia fashion -- alphabetical place names. Places that get 3 stars (their top rating -- must see) on some of the maps don't show up in the index or as a place heading. When you find something interesting in the text, you have to wonder, where is it in the country? Good luck finding further data. Prices and estimated costs? Forget it -- there are none. I suppose that reduces their costs of updating versions. Data on hotels and restaurants? No -- you have to buy Michelin's separate book, their "red guide." Meaningful information on any form of travel other than by car? Not here. Trying to plan a trip with this guide? Lots of luck.
A comprehensive travel companion.......2000-09-27
Michelin's "Netherlands" guide is a compact and comprehensive companion when travelling in the Low Countries. It is pleasant to read and gives you the necessary historical, geographical and cultural background of the country as well as on its provinces and towns. It basically gives you the information, proposition for itineries etc. which you need and expect, without being too lengthy. Complemented with Michelin's 1:400.000 map, it is an excellent basis to plan a trip and then follow it through. The only point, which could be improved is the index, which does not reference all the sites marked as worth visiting on the overview maps on the first pages of the guide. Some sites (example Muiden castle) are not referenced in themselves but as excursions, which can be done in the environs of a town (such as Amsterdam).
A Helpful Guide to the Netherlands.......2000-08-11
I like the rating system used by the authors to evaluate theinterest of a prospective tourist site. It's helpful in trip planning. On the other hand, the detail given in describing individual cities or sites should be sufficient for the casual tourist. The book includes brief history lessons that increased my interest in the historical sites described. It's worth [the price].

Disappointing, intentionally lacking information.......2001-09-18
This book was a great disappointment. The book only covers the most generic tourist spots, and on the subject of the Red Light district unacceptably refuses to even review or mention anything dealing with coffeeshops or prostitution. If you want a bland and intentionally incomplete guide, this would be the book for you. If you want an unbiased and complete guide, try the Time Out Guide to Amsterdam instead.

This is a typical Dover book containing interesting and useful, but hard to find information in an economical format. This is not an instructional book; There is no text other than a reference to the century from which the numerpous examples come, nor are there layout or page examples. The print quality of my copy is somewhat pale and poorly aligned, but the illustrations are mainly large and the detail is easy to see for copy practice.
