Book Description
In the 100 years since the legume-Rhizobium symbiotic nitrogen fixation interaction was first described, interest in this field has grown rapidly. The types of studies have been cyclical in nature, involving a cross-section of disciplines. The availability of cheap nitrogenous fertilizers caused much of the biological nitrogen fixation research to become more theoretical in the developed world. The high cost of energy, coupled with environmental concerns and the interest in sustainable agriculture, has stimulated research in symbiotic nitrogen fixation. The development of modern genetic techniques has resulted in interdisciplinary research on plant-microbe interactions controlling nitrogen fixation. This has resulted in a better understanding of environmental factors influencing the nodulation process, chemical signalling between the symbiotic partners and the nature of the specificity between host plant and microsymbiotant.
This volume summarizes the diverse research efforts in biological nitrogen fixation by presenting a collection of papers in the areas of physiology and metabolism, taxonomy and evolution, genetics and ecology.

Book Description
During the past three decades there has been a large amount of research on biological nitrogen fixation, in part stimulated by increasing world prices of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and environmental concerns. In the last several years, research on plant--microbe interactions, and symbiotic and asymbiotic nitrogen fixation has become truly interdisciplinary in nature, stimulated to some degree by the use of modern genetic techniques. These methodologies have allowed us to make detailed analyses of plant and bacterial genes involved in symbiotic processes and to follow the growth and persistence of the root-nodule bacteria and free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria in soils. Through the efforts of a large number of researchers we now have a better understanding of the ecology of rhizobia, environmental parameters affecting the infection and nodulation process, the nature of specificity, the biochemistry of host plants and microsymbionts, and chemical signalling between symbiotic partners.
This volume gives a summary of current research efforts and knowledge in the field of biological nitrogen fixation. Since the research field is diverse in nature, this book presents a collection of papers in the major research area of physiology and metabolism, genetics, evolution, taxonomy, ecology, and international programs.

Book Description
A synthesis of current knowledge on the fixation of nitrogen by systems involving plants, especially legumes, and micro-organisms. Such associations utilise nitrogen from the atmosphere to make amino acids and proteins, and are of primary importance in providing a large part of the nitrogen compounds needed to sustain life. This volume underlines, and in some respects quantifies for the first time, their importance in both natural and agricultural habitats. The text is divided into parts dealing with genetic aspects, legume inoculants, field assessment, the effect of the environment and with fixation in non-leguminous symbioses. The final chapter is devoted to more controversial aspects of recent work. This volume complements Volume 6 in the series, Nitrogen Fixation by Free-living Micro-organisms. Together they provide valuable source material in wide-ranging fields of research and starting points for future work on nitrogen fixation.

Description:
Biological N"2 fixation (BNF) by associative diazotrophic bacteria is a spontaneous process where soil N is limited and adequate C sources are available. Yet the ability of these bacteria to contribute to yields in crops is only partly a result of BNF. A range of diazotrophic plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria participate in interactions with C"3 and C"4 crop plants (e.g. rice, wheat, maize, sugarcane and cotton), significantly increasing their vegetative growth and grain yield. We review the potential of these bacteria to contribute to yield increases in a range of field crops and outline possible strategies to obtain such yield increases more reliably. The mechanisms involved have a significant plant growth-promoting potential, retaining more soil organic-N and other nutrients in the plant-soil system, thus reducing the need for fertiliser N and P. Economic and environmental benefits can include increased income from high yields, reduced fertiliser costs and reduced emission of the greenhouse gas, N"2O (with more than 300 times the global warming effect of CO"2), as well as reduced leaching of NO"3^--N to ground water. Obtaining maximum benefits on farms from diazotrophic, plant growth promoting biofertilisers will require a systematic strategy designed to fully utilise all these beneficial factors, allowing crop yields to be maintained or even increased while fertiliser applications are reduced.

Customer Reviews:
Practical and precise.......2007-10-02
An interesting tome that is practical and precise. Valuable for the first time traveler to Paris. Bon voyage!
Handy Helper.......2007-03-26
I had borrowed this book from the library during a tourist-French class. The teacher told me she used to teach from this book. It's a great size to fit in a purse/bag and I'm going to bring it when I go to France this summer. With the pictures, I think it's better than a regular translation mini-book.
The Key to Paris Communications.......2006-06-28
I spent a week in Paris for business earlier this month and had only 6 days' notice about the trip. I don't speak French and I had never been outside of the U.S. I found this book, Rendez-vous with France, at the local library and it was my saving grace throughout the week. By using the book and its charming illustrations, I was able to communicate with shuttle drivers, hotel staff, street vendors and wait staff. I literally could not have gotten through the week without it! Since I was in Paris for business I didn't really get to EXPERIENCE much of Paris, but I have already bought this book and Jill Butler's next book on wandering in Paris for my next trip.
Fun with French Whether you Travel to France or Not.......2003-06-26
Even if you are fairly fluent in the French language yet have never gone to France, you will find this little book/travel diary indispensible and so incredibly easy to use you will wonder why someone else did not think of it sooner. Each of the pages is liberally sprinkled with colorful drawings, a explanation or label in French and the phonetic pronunciation of whatever the picture depicts. Tres facile! The book is setup in 5 units: En Voyage (your arrival, transportation, hotel arrangements, sightseeing and departure), Eating out in Cafes and Restaurants (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner), Shopping (Clothes, Food and Household goods), the Basics ( Counting, Money, Communication, Services, Time, Restrooms and Emergencies) and the Index with a wonderful alphabet pronunciation that most books simply and foolishly do not include. Insightfully, Butler provides pages in the book for you to list such memorable things as your favorite restaurants and cafes, notable villages, favorite meals, etc. She thoughtfully provides a page which depicts the types of French bread, the characteristics of the Fish you may choose on a menu--for example: les anchois are grey, oily, strong in flavor and fillets, country and region codes associated with the French telephone system, and many other interesting and necessary bits of information that you just will not find in the more popular guides. Above all the format is fun and easy to use, Butler was wise enough to include a built in ribbon bookmark. Recommended to anyone who will travel to France--mentally or physically and for anyone who studies the French language--this colorful book makes a great reference guide and vocabulary builder
Rendez-vous with France a la Jill Butler.......2002-09-11
I took this charming book along on a recent trip to Paris and the Loire Valley. My husband (who speaks fluent French), our good friend and fellow traveler (who spoke no French), and I (still learning) all enjoyed this little book tremendously! It is a wonderful guide to everyday useful vocabulary, organized by common situations that require conversation. The best part are Jill's entertaining illustrations and the phoenetic pronunciation guide with each word. We all added some new words to our vocabulary during the trip, and had lots of fun using this book together as we went.
Book Description
What happens when vast wealth, a virtual media monopoly, and acute shamelessness combine in one man?
As the brilliant Alexander Stille demonstrates in this blistering, newsbreaking book, Italy's Silvio Berlusconi has outdone himself, and undone his country. Many are the crimes of Berlusconi, and if you can shield your mind from the human costs, there's something appallingly entertaining about this extraordinary chronicle of rank criminality, cronyism, and self-dealing at the highest levels of power. The scale, the sums, the stakes, the backdrops: The Sack of Rome is a story of gargantuan appetites, diabolical cleverness, and ruthless maneuvering in a land where the normal checks and balances don't apply. If you combined the political might of President Bush, the star power of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the media holdings of Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch, the money of Ross Perot and Steve Forbes, and the real estate and personal arrogance of Donald Trump, and if this same media-political Frankenstein had also been charged with innumerable serious crimes, you would begin to get an idea of how long a shadow Berlusconi casts over Italian public life. And because Italy has long been a laboratory for bad new political ideas, Berlusconi's combination of media, money, celebrity, and politics is more than simply a dark, fascinating fairy tale; it is a glimpse into the future of modern democratic politics.
A monumental work of investigative reportage by one of the world's most celebrated Italy watchers: if a book can do any real damage to this man, then this book is the one.
Customer Reviews:
Well written, well annotated and balanced.......2007-08-31
Unlike several other well-known Berlusconi tomes, Stille's book is unusually balanced. Like the other books however, he is forced to rehash much biographical material and if you have read other Berlusconi bios this can deaden the pace at times. In my opinion, what makes this book interesting and lip-quavering at points, is its explanation of Berlusconi as a peculiarly Italian phenomenon. Without the context of provincialism, anti-competitiveness, and the endemic corruption of the political establishment, Berlusconi simply could not have flourished. Whether one approves or disapproves of Berlusconi's political forays, surrounded by cadres drawn often from his own business interests, the reality as Stilles shows is that Berlusconi emerged at the right time and in the right place (Milan). What is shocking (leaving aside revelations of Mafia interests, blatant disregard of national broadcasting codes, planning laws and so forth) is Stille's underlying, subterranean, thesis that Italy is constitutionally tuned to corruption and moral laxity in high places. There is no point in retelling the many of the wonderfully unnerving vignettes about Berlusconi's intrigues that are often cited as an affront to liberal democracy in the book, suffice it to say that without a horde of supporting characters, the Berlusconi phenomenon could never have flourished. Reflect on that for a moment to appreciate the real service done by this book.
Like a meal, sometimes you can serve too much!.......2007-02-13
This book gives a shocking view of the ugly underbelly of Italian politics. I'm glad I pushed through it, though I was quite tempted to give up a number of times. The book is like the dumping of truckloads of dirt: what is at first scandalous and intriguing does, at times, become the dull and mechanical listing of the details of another five incidents of corruption. It's like reading a catalog of the circus that is Italian politics from 1990 to 2006, alternating between shocking and tedious. One cannot avoid noting the irony that, like its subject, the book verges on the chaotic and could benefit from self-restraint.
As other reviewers have observed, the book is repetitive, and appears not to have been edited to put the chapters -- perhaps free-standing articles -- together. One just wants to send this back to the talented author for a rewrite. Perhaps someone did but, having gorged and been disgusted by the excess of it all, Stille could not bear it chew it over further.
Excellent Reading on Berlusconi and Democracy in the Media Age.......2006-11-05
Stille has put together a thought provoking book. Presaged by Orwell, the SB story defines the age we are living in, and those of us who care about democracy need to understand it.
To achieve his vast wealth, SB and his associates broke and skirted many laws. By selling himself through his monopolistic media empire (and the image of his new party named for his popular soccer team) in three months time, he achieved prosecutorial immunity by taking over the reins of government.
As Prime Minister, with most of Parliament on his personal payroll, SB effected the release all imprisoned for corruption. Ousted as PM, still powerful, SB got a law enabling witness to opt out of testifying. Back again as PM, a law whereby those accused can chose their prosecutors! This is no where near the tip of the iceberg!
Stille gives us a step by step of this rise and how he used the power he got to avoid prosecution for ever growing lists of crimes. He used the media to polarize the country and create crises. He cast his enemies as scum who hated him for his virtue & would destroy the country if given any power. By controlling the media he was able to discredit everyone who criticized the least thing about him. Each different media outlet (which he controlled, although he made them seem independent) echoed his point of view and made his distortions the conventional wisdom. Books, journals, and higher brow newpapers (permanance and nuance) being the province of the small group who knew about and could document his abuses of power, he discredited it as elitist. The many who spent 3-5 hours a day watching and glimpsing TV integrated the reality he fed them and believed his stories to be facts. He saw to it that the few journalists who might divulge his crimes would never work again. Pay offs of money, influence and/or career opportunities worked too and controlling the judiciary took care of everything else. Stille documents all these with specifics.
I'd like to know more about the brave Italian prosecutors who press on despite the dangers of the Mafia and Berlusconi.
While there is analysis throughout, Stille ties the story up with comparisons to the highly concentrated media developing in the US and its desire for federal approvals for further concentration. One parallel he doesn't bring out here is that of the two comedians who break the chorus praise for SB. Hopefully, the 100+ cable channels, a vibrant internet, the size and nature of our country (the US), and the economics of our entertainment exports will protect us in the US from this sort of monarchy.
This is an excellent book. It's a slow read for those not familiar with Italian politics, but very worthwhile.
The metaphor is so important that I hope that some cable channel can give us a Dallas or West Wing style series based in it. Hear me HBO! This is as big as the Sopranos! Call it "Rome II".
Is this the Future of Democracy?.......2006-08-21
I hope this is not the future of democracy becasue I find it scary to contemplate. A well written, hard-to-put down book that is not difficult to follow. I found the last chapter particularly interesting as it pertains to US politics.
Younger American readers who do not remember a less politicized media atmosphere may well wonder what the fuss is all about: Fox is the norm to them, and to many, the print media is a bastion of the left. If anything, the book reminds us that there is a difference between fact and opinion. A very timely read and, for those of us who love Italy, a very upsetting view of what politics in Italy has become.
The only fault I found with the book is some repetition from chapter to chapter with respect to examples/quotes, although this may be because the chapters could have been printed separately in various publications. Still a worthwhile read.
Required reading for Americans and Italians alike........2006-07-28
I recived the book from Amazon just a short while ago. I started it and could hardly put it down. What an incredible job Stille has done!
To make order and organize all the material, on this endless italian tragedy, must have been an Herculean task. The story is told with clarity and riveting
prose, with richness of facts and documentation and from a perspective that is historical and not detached, caring and profoundly analytical. This book is of great relevance not only for Italian readers but for Americans as well.
I agree with the author through the whole book and admire his work.
I thank him for it.
Customer Reviews:
Well written but biased.......2007-05-01
This book is well written and really tells the story of berlusconis rise, but it is biased against Berlusconi who what ever the critics say is a Great Man who has accomlished alot and not some idiot bureaucrat that usually runs countries these days.
Master.......2006-03-09
Ginsborg is truly a master of italian history, society, and politics. I am not at all surprised with the overwhelming expertise displayed is this book, seeing as all Ginsborg's works display the extent of his knowledge and literary skill. A great "riassunto" of Berlusconi from youth to today, and fairly non-partisan.
Italy is very close to home.......2005-11-19
The author of this book knows how to dramatizize politics. "...something important is happening in Italy, potentially quite sinister, and the seeming normality of life serves to mask it very well." If only it were just a fiction. "Silvio Berlsconi" is a great book on the current state of democracy in Italy, the kind of "modern democracy" heralded by Berlusconi's media empire. If the dictators of the early 20th century have been characterizes as "charismatic leaders" pied pipering away their cults of personality, then today's dictator can be thought of as the sort of highly tailored, well edited "iconic leader," the guy who just LOOKS RIGHT for the job. (Paul Ginsbourg includes a hilarious anecdote in the post-script about Berlusconi who, at a recent press conference, showed up with a face lift he had gotten over Christmas and then proceeds to make the most unfortunate analogy: "The communists...tried to have a face lift in order to hide their real identity, but theirs failed.")
As relentlessly critical as Ginsbourg is to Berlusconi, it is hard to ignore the facts of his presidency, both rise to and the policies to follow. It is also hard to ignore the remarkable similarity between the current state of Italian politics and those of the U.S. As Ginsbourg writes, "All this will have a familiar ring in Anglo-Saxon ears."
Democracy is becoming increasingly about television and leadership about being televised. What happens to "freedom" in a community connected only by cable? Ginsbourg makes a couple claims of his own, but the exciting aspect of the book is the fact that it raises such questions at all.
The Tale is Told of You.......2004-09-14
Italian politics since 1945 has often seemed too unstable and esoteric for most Americans. Paul Ginsborg's short polemic about Silvio Berlusconi shows why people should pay attention. The Berlusconi phenomenon is an amazing, and quite appalling, one. From 1992 to 1994, it was revealed that the conservative Christian Democratic party, which had held uninterrupted power since the war, was deeply, deeply corrupt. So corrupt in fact, that the revelation caused its disintergration. But instead of the Right losing the next elections, a wealthy businessman came along and simply bought a new political party. Silvio Berlusconi's "Forza Italia" was not a party devoted to political debate and discussion. It was staffed by his cronies and devoted to his political cult. With it he won the elections of 1994, even though he was himself deeply compromised by the old regime. Serious allegations of corruption soon led to his loss of power and his electoral defeated in 1996. But he returned to power in 2001. Now in point of fact, the charges against him are more than just "allegations", as that infamous left-wing rag, The Economist, has pointed out. Berlusconi has perjured himself about his membership in a conspiratorial, anti-democratic, quasi-fascist masonic lodge. (He benefited from an amnesty). In the seventies his keeper of one his (one-horse) stables was a notorious mafioso. His personal lawyer, Cesare Preveti, has been convicted of 11 year and 5 year sentences for corrupting judges, though he remains free on appeal. Berlusconi delays his trials to run up against the limitations laws. He amends the limitations laws to render himself immune. He changes the rules of evidence so that trials will be further delayed. And when all that fails, he passes laws giving himself immunity, while seeking to undermine the independence of the magistrates.
This is bad. And it gets worse. For as Ginsborg notes Berlusconi is still backed by more than 40% of Italians. His defeat in 2006 is by no means a sure thing. Indeed he plans to become a powerful President of the Republic. This despite his judical troubles, an anaemic economy, and support for a massively unpopular war. This despite his failure to simplify administrative procedures, or start promised infrastructure projects, though he has reduced the penalties for accounting fraud. Ginsborg himself is one of the leading historians of modern Italy, and he points out Berlusconi's origins in the Milan building trade. He points out how Berlusconi benefited from the intervention of the infamously corrupt Bettino Craxi, who in 1984 ignored the courts and constitutional mandates for a proper broadcasting law to pass a decree without which Berlusconi could not maintain his broadcasting monopoly. (He also points out how Craxi was the godfather of Berlusconi's child out of wedlock, and how Berlusconi comically elides his adultery in discussing the end of his first marriage.) Although Ginsborg tries to be fair, there is not much to be said about about Berlusconi's media: the absence of proper news coverage and documentaries, rampant bias in Berlusconi's favor, more advertisements than the rest of Europe combined, two-hour documentaries about stigmatic priests, a sexism that sometimes seems to have come out of Lolita.
Berlusconi is not a fascist, but he is a threat to democracy. To be exact, he wishes to make democracy safe for the Right and for wealthy people like himself. One should be wary of a man who claims "Better fascism than the bureaucratic tyranny of the judiciary." The party euphemizes the fascist past, with public places and spaces named after "acceptable" fascists and with Berlusconi claiming that Mussolini didn't murder anyone. Whether it is the Bank of Italy, the civil service, public broadcasting, magistrates or the public health system, all have their independence and integrity threatened by Berlusconi. Meanwhile he deals with Murdoch and his own media empire as if conflict of interest laws don't exist, which in Italy they don't. His model polity is a world in which mass apathy is punctuated by his biased media and his political image, where people consent, but do not choose. Ginsborg points out how this project is encouraged by the weaknesses of a centre-left which, purged of its Marxist past, cannot seek to mobilize support, which seeks to compromise and which cannot inspire with its technocratic biases, and which, for one reason or another, cannot attack Berlusconi's venality. Ginsborg's book is not perfect (a law undermining magisterial independence is not made clear, while Ginsborg overestimates the influence of the late Canadian media lord Izzy Aspser). But in an era with declining voter turnout and declining independent media, where media monopoly advances with partisan and unscrupulous conservative politics, and where the left, the centre, and the right-centre are too nervous and exhausted to resist, there are good reasons to fear that Berlusconi's Italy could soon be our world.

All about Silvio Berlusconi - A mistery of these years.......2003-12-06
This book is difficult to find. One says that the copies of the first edition have been made to disappear. Many collectors are searching for this book, desperately. The price (as rare used) could be very high. The book is written good. It speaks about the political rise of the Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi, his transactions (presumed) with the Mafia and on his mysterious holdings. The first edition (1987 by Editori Riuniti in Rome) is unavailable. The second edition (1994 by Kaos in Milan) can be found with high difficulty.

Boring, nauseating, stiff political propaganda.......2001-05-13
This book by Walter Veltroni, a leading Italian communist who was working for and paid by the KGB until just over ten years ago, and now claims to no longer be a 'neo-communist', is no more than stiff propaganda against a man whom he envies from all points of view - political, personal, social. The book does contain some useful information for those who might want to do research on the turbulent topic of television in Italy, but the biased and useless views of the author make it almost worthless.
