      Description:
Sediment microbial communities are important for seagrass growth and carbon cycling, however relatively few studies have addressed the composition of prokaryotic communities in seagrass bed sediments. Selective media were used enumerate culturable anaerobic bacteria associated with the roots of the seagrass, Halodule wrightii, the fresh to brackish water plant, Vallisneria americana, and the respective vegetated and unvegetated sediments. H. wrightii roots and sediments had high numbers of sulfate-reducing bacteria whereas iron-reducing bacteria appeared to have a more significant role in V. americana roots and sediments. Numbers of glucose-utilizing but not acetate-utilizing iron reducers were higher on the roots of both plants relative to the vegetated sediments indicating a difference within the iron reducing bacterial community. H. wrightii roots had lower glucose-utilizing iron reducers, and higher acetogenic bacteria than did V. americana roots suggesting different aquatic plants support different anaerobic microbial communities. Sulfur-disproportionating and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria were also cultured from the roots and sediments. These results provide evidence of the potential importance of sulfur cycle bacteria, in addition to sulfate-reducing bacteria, in seagrass bed sediments.

        Description:
The effect of molybdate, a sulfate analog, on the total methanogenic activity (TMA) and total sulfidogenic activity (TSA) of biomass metabolizing synthetic sucrose based substrate containing sulfate was investigated in batch assays. In Phase I of the study, TMA and TSA were assessed twice for four feed changes at a chemical oxygen demand to sulfate (COD/SO"4^2^-) ratio of 3.5. In Phase II, long-term experiments were conducted for 10-13 feed changes with varying chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration, sulfate concentration, COD/SO"4^2^- ratio, molybdate dose and biomass with different growth histories. Assays with 3mM molybdate showed TSA inhibition over 85%. Dose dependency was observed for sulfate concentration, COD/SO"4^2^- ratio, and biomass history. The minimum concentration that gave over 93% TSA inhibition was 0.25mM. However, intermediate concentrations of molybdate inhibited methane producing bacteria (MPB) activity. TMA stimulation was observed at 0.75-2.0mM molybdate.

          Description:
Growing awareness of the detrimental effect of corrosion in conjunction with bacterial activity in potable drinking water systems has led to an increase in research sponsored by water companies. In particular, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), found in anaerobic conditions underneath the main corrosion shell, are noted for their effects in promoting localized corrosion. This study investigates the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria in sampled water mains, in a region that would otherwise be expected to be stable, both by direct sampling, by using coupons in a Robbins device installed in the distribution network, and by sampling from laboratory tanks. Samples of pipes of various materials show a high frequency of SRB. Cast iron coupons from the Robbins device gave positive results for SRB after only 1 month in the distribution system, though negative for total viable count and coliforms. Corrosion rates of the coupons in the Robbins device increased in the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria, indicating microbially induced corrosion. Laboratory coupon tests indicated no sulfate-reducing bacteria present.

            Description:
A sulfate-reducing bacterium, was isolated from a 6 month trained enrichment culture in an anaerobic media containing phosphogypsum as a sulfate source, and, designated strain SA2. Cells of strain SA2 were rod-shaped, did not form spores and stained Gram-negative. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolate revealed that it was related to members of the genus Desulfomicrobium (average sequence similarity of 98%) with Desulfomicrobium baculatum being the most closely related (sequence similarity of 99%). Strain SA2 used thiosulfate, sulfate, sulfite and elemental sulfur as electron acceptors and produced sulfide. Strain SA2 reduced sulfate contained in 1-20g/L phosphogypsum to sulfide with reduction of sulfate contained in 2g/L phosphogypsum being the optimum concentration. Strain SA2 grew with metalloid, halogenated and non-metal ions present in phosphogypsum and with added high concentrations of heavy metals (125ppm Zn and 100ppm Ni, W, Li and Al). The relative order for the inhibitory metal concentrations, based on the IC"5"0 values, was Cu, Te>Cd>Fe, Co, Mn>F, Se>Ni, Al, Li>Zn.

              Description:
This work evaluates the addition of solid phase oxygen, a magnesium peroxide (MgO"2) formulation manufactured by Regenesis (oxygen-releasing compounds, ORC^T^M), to inhibit the production of hydrogen sulfide (H"2S) in an SRB-enriched environment. The initial rate of release of oxygen by the ORC was determined over a short period by adding sodium sulfite (Na"2SO"3), which was a novel approach developed for this study. The ability of ORCs to control H"2S by releasing oxygen was evaluated in a bench-scale column containing cultured sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). After a series of batch tests, 0.4% ORC was found to be able to inhibit the formation of H"2S for more than 40 days. In comparison, the concentration of H"2S dropped from 20mg S/L to 0.05mg S/L immediately after 0.1% hydrogen peroxide (H"2O"2) was added, but began to recover just four days later. Thus, H"2O"2 does not seem to be able to inhibit the production of sulfide for an extended period of time. By providing long-term inhibition of the SRB population, ORC provides a good alternative means of controlling the production of H"2S in water.

                Description:
The role of microbiological environments containing pure and mixed cultures of sulfate-reducing bacteria in stress corrosion cracking of carbon steel in biotic and abiotic environments was investigated. Carbon steel specimens were subjected to slow strain rate testing in a synthetic seawater environment (3.5% sodium chloride solution), with and without the microbiological cultures. Specimens tested in biotic (microbiological) conditions showed a considerable loss of ductility, as compared to those tested in abiotic conditions. Fractography of the specimens tested in abiotic solutions suggested features of only ductile failure (dimples), whereas those tested in biotic conditions had additional features of brittle cracking. Results also suggested the role of sulfate-reducing bacteria in promoting hydrogen-assisted cracking.

                  Description:
Biological production of hydrogen sulfide (H"2S) using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) has important potential within environmental biotechnology. The aim of this work was to study the possibility of using SRB for the treatment of an acid mine drainage (AMD) at bench-scale. This process involved three stages: the optimization of H"2S production through the utilization of total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs) by SRB, the establishment of a biofilm reactor for sulfide production, and the precipitation of metals by using the biologically produced H"2S. The substrates used for TVFAs production consisted of papaya, apple and banana. The H"2S produced from the degradation of TVFAs was utilized for the precipitation of a metal-contaminated effluent collected from Bolivar mine (Oruro, Bolivia). The maximum concentration of H"2S obtained was approximately 16mM. Removal efficiencies of ca. 100% for copper, above 94% for zinc, and above 92% for lead were achieved.

                    Description:
The filtrate obtained by interacting a known amount of rice husk with deionised, Milli-Q water was assessed as a carbon source and nutrient medium for the growth of Desulfotomaculum nigrificans, a typical sulfate-reducing bacterium. The filtrate contained essential growth constituents such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorous apart from calcium, sodium, chloride and sulfate ions. Based on the ^1H and ^1^3C NMR characterization studies, the organic composition of the components dissolved from the rice husk, was found to be: (i) 66% lignocellulosic material, (ii) 24% xylose+arabinose and (iii) 10% galactose. The growth studies indicated a 15-fold increase in the bacterial cell number in about 20 days. Nearly 81% and 66% reduction in sulfate concentration could be achieved in about 28 days, from the solutions containing initial sulfate concentrations of 550mg/l and 1200mg/l respectively. In both the cases studied, the iron concentration could be reduced by over 85%.

                      Description:
Seep carbonates, formed by the synergistic metabolism of methane oxidizing archaea (MOA) and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB), have been found in many places worldwide but have not been found to date in the South China Sea. Mud volcanoes and shale diapirs have been reported in the South China Sea however, and microscope and geochemical analysis of carbonates dredged where bottom simulating reflectors (BSR) suggest the presence of gas hydrate on the northeastern continental slope of the South China Sea suggest that the carbonates are hydrocarbon seep-related carbonates. The carbonates we dredged are chimney-like and preserve MOA/SRB fossils. Their very light carbon isotopic compositions (-51.25 to -51.76%%) suggest that their carbon was derived from microbial methane oxidization. These seep carbonates and their preserved MOA/SRB fossils imply gas venting has occurred recently on the seafloor in the northeastern continental slopes in the South China Sea.

5 out of 5 stars A savvy and slick insider's guide to present day Istanbul.......2007-05-08

I just returned from 4 days in Istanbul using a hot-off-the-press copy of this guide and cannot recommend it highly enough. Given the layers of history and multitude of sites this city has to offer many guidebooks seem to forget to detail the modern life of the city. The Time Out guide has far and away the most up-to-date information about the present day life and cultural activities of this stunningly beautiful, vibrant and surprisingly hip city. Keep in mind that Istanbul has changed a lot in the past few years and if you are interested in the latest restaurants, nightlife, hotels and shopping options in addition to the traditional historic sites tour-route, this will be a great primary guidebook for you. The book is filled with a lot of current photos and interesting sidebars and highlights that are very helpful in narrowing down the multitude of possible ways to spend your time.

Time Out gives you an insider's view of the city from an expat-resident perspective and though its listings are much more opinionated than standard guidebooks, this is a very good thing. The additional info you'll get on everything from standard tourist sites to off-the-beaten-track hammams will help steer you in a direction that best suites your personal aesthetic, comfort level and style of travel. The guide is very well indexed and organized so it's easy to locate the information you need while you are out and about. I found the section on Bosphorus ferries and day trips out of the city particularly useful and much more in depth than other guides. Be sure to pick up a copy of the monthly English language Time Out Istanbul magazine as soon as you arrive for event schedules, music listings and articles on what is going on in the city while you are there as it provides a seamless "update" to the guide itself.

The maps in the back of the guide are fairly detailed, but are printed on several pages. If you plan to do a lot of walking, particularly in areas outside the central historic Sultanahmet district, I would recommend supplementing this guide with a more detailed city map such as the Istanbul Map (Travel Reference Map) as this city is a maze of back alleys and winding, unmarked passageways and it's a bit difficult tracking down shops and restaurants using the included maps. If you like history this book provides an intelligent and well written intro and an excellent list of recommended reading. Use this guide to build the day's itinerary, choose restaurants, shopping venues and activities and then add a little Freeley (John Freely's Istanbul) and recent Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk (Istanbul: Memories and the City) to your in-flight reading list.

If you want a hip, insightful and savvy guide to the lively city of today, this is a wonderful guide that will not steer you wrong. If you are doing the standard loop of historic sites in old Istanbul, then many other city guidebooks provide perfectly adequate coverage as well. Beware that many country-specific guidebooks to Turkey provide rather thin coverage of the city itself.

Well written and chock full of what appears to be some very recent photographs. The book starts off with twenty-some pages of Turkish history including several pages devoted to Istanbul for women--governmentally secular, Turkey is nonetheless 90% Islam. The travel section contains critiques of dozens of hotels and even lists web sites and email addresses. A rarity even in current travel books. Web search engines tend to overwhelm the senses with too much data, so finding a source that actually evaluates hotels on an individual basis is a revelation. Likewise the section on dining, drinking and shopping covers a wide range of price choices with many recommendations that have the ring of authority to them. With 5,000 of years of history, Istanbul would require several lifetimes to investigate properly. Sightseeing is arranged in neighborhood fashion and gives the armchair traveler an opportunity to plot a variety of routes depending on time and inclination. The more you read, the more time you want to spend peeling back the layers of archeological wonder. Time Out includes almost 50 pages devoted to arts and entertainment and provides a comprehensive guide to adult night life in Istanbul. The factual style of writing lends an air of believability and authenticity. One of the off putting elements in the book is the inclusion of magazine style advertising throughout the text. And, the map section leaves a great deal to be desired. Ten pages at the back of the book split into areas of the city, without hotel indexes, and only identifying major streets. All in all, if you have only one guidebook for Istanbul, this is the one. There is a small section on Turkish language and vocabulary, and where to go to get instructions in Turkish. Covering virtually every aspect of the city the editors have created a concise yet detailed guide to what used to be Constantinople.

                                                            Book Description

Many objects are beautiful; and many creations are functional. But only few achieve enduring status. The "Design Classics" series presents such select products that have set standards in form, function and brand communication. Each monograph is a richly illustrated essay and product portrait, from conception to production, from prototype to collectors' item.
