Book Description
Sedges: Carex is the fourteenth volume of the Illustrated Flora of Illinois series and the sixth and last volume devoted to monocots, or plants that have a single seed-leaf, or cotyledon, upon germination. For each of the 159 species of Carex in Illinois, there is a full illustration showing the habit of the plant and close-ups of various vegetative and reproductive structures that are crucial for the identification of the individual species. There is also a complete description of each species as well as a discussion of the nomenclature and habitats. Range maps show the county distribution of each species in Illinois. A detailed key is provided for identification of the species.
Unique in several respects, Carex is by far the most numerous genus of plants in Illinois. Because of the vast number of species, the similarity of many of the species, and the relatively small size of the critical reproductive structures, the members of this genus are extremely confusing to identify. This book, with its detailed descriptions, key, and precise illustrations, should aid the interested person in the identification of these plants.
Since more than three-fourths of the species of Carex in Illinois are inhabitants of wetlands, an understanding of the genus is critical for those working in wetlands. Amateur and professional botanists will find the information extremely valuable, as well as environmental and conservation groups, garden clubs, farm bureaus, home extension groups, scout organizations, and school libraries. Persons working in natural areas programs and in rare and endangered species programs and those working on environmental impact assessments and wildlife management projects will also find the information pertinent.
Customer Reviews:
Great Illustrations.......2001-07-17
Very useful book. Excellent illustrations. If you want to know what sedges are, I give it five stars.
Mohlenbrock Carex.......2000-05-27
Mohlenbrock's addition to the illustrated floras available in the midwest is most welcome. This volume describes the taxonomy and illustrates each species of Carex found in Illinois. The application to adjacent states is relatively easy since the genus is widespread. The book provides an update of the Carex section of the Gleason New Britton and Brown Illustrated Flora which is now out of print. Mohlenbrock's Illinois Flora was not illustrated and given the complexity of the genus, the clear diagrams and location maps make an arduous taxonomic task somewhat, I emphasize somewhat, easier. If you are working in wetlands this volume will be of special interest to you and should be a part of your office collection.

Description:
The relative importance of specific plant properties versus soil characteristics in shaping the bacterial community structure of the rhizosphere is a topic of considerable debate. Here, we report the results of a study on the bacterial composition of the rhizosphere of the wild plant Carex arenaria (sand sedge) growing at 10 natural sites in The Netherlands. The soil properties of the sandy soils at these sites were highly disparate, most notably in pH, chloride and organic matter content. Rhizosphere and bulk soil bacterial communities were examined by culture-independent means, namely, 16S rDNA-directed PCR-DGGE profiling. Large differences were observed between the bacterial communities of the different sites for both bulk and rhizosphere soil. Cluster analysis of bacterial profiles revealed that the rhizosphere community of each site was generally more closely related to the bulk soil community of that site rather than to rhizosphere communities of other sites. Hence, bacterial community structure within the rhizosphere of C. arenaria appeared to be determined to a large extent by the bulk soil community composition. This conclusion was supported by a reciprocal planting experiment, where C. arenaria shoots of different sites yielded highly similar rhizosphere communities when planted in the same soil.

Description:
Microbial activity is known to continue during the winter months in cold alpine and Arctic soils often resulting in high microbial biomass. Complex soil nutrient dynamics characterize the transition when soil temperatures approach and exceed 0^oC in spring. At the time of this transition in alphine soils microbial biomass declines dramatically together with soil pools of available nutrients. This pattern of change characterizes alpine soils at the winter-spring transition but whether a similar pattern occurs in Arctic soils, which are colder, is unclear. In this study amounts of microbial biomass and the availability of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) for microbial and plant growth in wet peaty soils of an Arctic sedge meadow have been determined across the winter-spring boundary. The objective was to determine the likely causes of the decline in microbial biomass in relation to temperature change and nutrient availability. The pattern of soil temperature at depths of 5-15cm can be divided into three phases: below -10^oC in late winter, from -7 to 0^oC for 7 weeks during a period of freeze-thaw cycles and above 0^oC in early spring. Peak microbial biomass and nutrient availability occurred early in the freeze-thaw phase. Subsequently, a steady decrease in inorganic N occurred, so that when soil temperatures rose above 0^oC, pools of inorganic nutrients in soils were very low. In contrast, amounts of microbial C and soluble organic C and N remained high until the end of the period of freeze-thaw cycles, when a sudden collapse occurred in soluble organic C and N and in phosphatase activity, followed by a crash in microbial biomass just prior to soil temperatures rising consistently above 0^oC. Following this, there was no large pulse of available nutrients, implying that competition for nutrients from roots results in the collapse of the microbial pool.

A Wine Country Must-Have.......2006-02-14
As someone who is in the wine industry, I've never had a more borrowed book than this one. It is a great resource and I refer to it frequently for dining and activity options. Oh yeah and wineries of course. I especially enjoy the way it's written. It's very entertaining yet informative. For those of you with a no-nonsense way of life, this is the book for you.
Wonderful Book, Very Thorough.......2006-01-28
I'm fairly new to the Bay area and hadn't had a chance to check out any wineries, mostly because I didn't know where to go. My husband and I just got back from a long weekend in Napa Valley. We spent a day biking around the Rutherford area wineries (which got interesting in the afternoon!), and another day sleeping in late and spending the rest of our time in St. Helena (so charming). We had a great time, and I wouldn't have known about half the things we did if I hadn't picked up this book first. It's really quite knowledgable, with local information, great hotel and restaurant recommendations, and a little something for wine beginners and experts (I'm the first type, I'll admit, but I had a great time). Anyway, great book!

An o k handbook, but a much better fire starter...........2001-11-24
I was given this book by a good friend of mine for my 67th birthday last October. A good friend, a man with good taste and a great sense and wonder for the outdoors. But I must be candid about this book. It simply sucks. Kim Keir is not only biased, but is a poor writer who lacks scope and detail in her descriptions of the great Northern Cal.
Encyclopedic, but biased.......1999-04-17
In general Moon travel guides are encyclopedic, and "Northern California Handbook" at nearly 800 pages of fine print is not an exception. Hotels and restaurants are subjectively described rather than rated, which I find preferable to the AAA approach. I purchased the guidebook for a visit to the "gold country", and unfortunately found it to be offensive. It refers to miners as "barbarians"and "lustful legions", refers to use of pig latin by miners as "hog" latin, refers to the 1849 gold rush as "the peak years of greed", hard rock mining is refered to as a "corporate raid", hard rock miners are described as being "like monstrous moles burrowing ... to bleed ancient veins", describes the very pleasant and beautiful Malakoff Diggins State Park as "horrifying" and "ghoulish", calls mining "land rape". The author gleefully describes bigotry toward Chinese miners, but is apparently oblivious of her own prejudice toward non-Asian miners--many of whom were Latin Americans (including Mexicans among others), free Black Americans, and Cherokee Indians from Georgia. It is not at all clear that Chinese miners were less "greedy" nor otherwise morally superior to non-Asian miners. Indeed far more Chinese miners were injured and killed in tong wars among themselves than by non-Asians. I am part Native American myself, and I personally have a deep seated pro-Asian prejudice as a result of a very kindly Chinese neighbor when I was a small child, but I manage to avoid expressing such prejudice in print, and certainly do not express it by denigrating non-Asians and non-Native Americans

Shopping in Grandma's Day.......2000-05-30
One of six books in the series "In Grandma's Day", this book shows some of the striking differences between the 1930's and 1940's and today. Shopping was an entirely different affair. It took longer. One went to different stors for different goods. There were no supermarkets. There weren't the selection of goods. The photos in the book are excellent in helping to show what it was like.
