Book Description
The Front Range of Colorado is one of America's most famous and spectacular summer playgrounds. Thousands of people from all over the nation visit our Rocky Mountains each year to enjoy the scenery and the many types of recreational activities which the region provides. Not among the least of the scenic attractions to be found here are the lavish displays of wild flowers in the mountain meadows and alpine heights, the vast expanses of cool, green forested lands, the brilliant splashes of autumn color of our aspens and sumacs, and the endless rolling grasslands of the eastern plains. There are very few places in the United States where so many types of vegetation are crowded into such a relatively small area, and where in the space of a few minutes time one may alternately bake in the climate of the desert, and shiver in the climate of the far north.
Learning to recognize the plants is a first, faltering step toward understanding a flora. Endless vistas of opportunity to study emerge as one becomes aware that we really know little about our flora beyond the identity of the species. Their life histories, uses, migrations, significance to aboriginal cultures, and so on, are largely uncharted. Amateurs can find much satisfaction and may make real contributions to science by delving deeply into some small area of the field. In Great Britain and elsewhere the amateur has always been the forefront of biological science. Darwin and Mendel were distinguished amateurs. More Americans should join their company.

Book Description
Ecology of the Southern Conifers brings together, for the first time, information on this diverse and unique group of plants. Twenty-eight scholars from across the hemisphere examine the history and ecology of the southern conifers, and emphasise their importance in understanding the evolution and ecological dynamics of southern vegetation. Drawing together the results of research from ecosystems as varied as the South African fynbos and New Caledonian rainforests, the Argentine steppe and inland Australia, this book searches for unifying themes and seeks to relate these to modern evolutionary and ecological theory.

Book Description
Since the 1950s, the pines native to the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California have shown symptoms of decline that have proven to result from exposure to ozone, a major plant-damaging gas in photochemical oxidant air pollution. Because of their proximity to major urban areas, the San Bernardino Mountains have served as a natural laboratory for studying effects of oxidant and acidic air pollution on a mixed-conifer forest. This volume presents a body of research conducted over more than thirty years, including an intensive interdisciplinary five-year study begun in 1991. Chapters include studies of the relationships of biogeography and climate to the region's air pollution, the chemical and physiological mechanisms of ozone injury, as well as the impacts of nitrogen-containing pollutants and natural stresses on polluted forests. The synthesis of such long-term studies provides insights into the combined influences of pollutants on ecosystem function in forested regions with Mediterranean-type climates.

Description:
Forests and forestry in Sweden are dominated by conifers. Silviculture using mixed or broadleaved stands is often recommended, but the degree to which broadleaves regenerate naturally needs to be clarified. The Swedish National Forest Inventory is here used for a region-wide study of broadleaved saplings (1.3m tall to 4.9cmdbh) regenerated naturally. For 12 species (taxa) in young forests (
<7m tall) and high forests (>=7m), sapling densities were related to seven forest types and three productivity classes. Birch had highest densities in all but two broadleaved forest types. Birch, oak, rowan and sallow had 70-85% of their total sapling populations in conifer-dominated forest types, indicating good potential for mixed stands. Beech, lime, hornbeam, ash and elm were mostly restricted to 'noble' (hardwood) forests. The regeneration success (saplings per mature tree) for birch, rowan and oak was highest in conifer-dominated forest; beech was about equally successful in conifer-dominated and broadleaved forests, and ash was very successful in broadleaved forest. Oak regeneration may be problematical in broadleaved forests, but we suggest this is not the case in conifer-dominated forests (where oaks have rarely been studied). Sapling densities of the species in the forest types were not consistently correlated with productivity, but birch and aspen generally regenerated strongest at intermediate and at high productivity, respectively. In noble forests, oak, ash and elm regenerated strongest at low productivity. The role of asexual regeneration (sprouting) remains to clarify. Our results suggest that lime, elm, ash and some other trees currently are limited mainly by poor dispersal, rather than habitat availability. The results are promising for various forms of mixed-species forestry that does not require planting (or little planting) and that would be beneficial for nature conservation.

Impact of a high-intensity fire on mixed evergreen and mixed conifer forests in the Peninsular Ranges of southern California, USA [An article from: Forest Ecology and Management]

Description:
Fire is an important disturbance agent in the southern California landscape and plays a large role in the function and structure of its pine and mixed conifer forests. However, humans have changed the forest fire regime across the western United States by excluding fire. Fire suppression has been blamed for increasing stand densities and a shift from fire-tolerant trees to shade-tolerant but fire sensitive trees. These changes had been observed in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park (CRSP), Peninsular Ranges, San Diego County, California, USA. We surveyed an area in CRSP during the first two post-fire growing seasons following the October 2003 Cedar Fire, a historically large and severe fire, to determine patterns of tree mortality and vegetation recovery. This area is a mosaic of mixed evergreen and mixed conifer forest, oak woodland, chaparral and grassland. Most conifers were killed by the fire, especially smaller trees, and very few pine seedlings have established. Oaks were top-killed but most were resprouting by the second year, although larger oaks were more likely to have died than smaller. A rich herbaceous community of native annuals established in the first post-fire growing season. With a record rainy season during the winter of 2004-2005, all plant functional groups increased in abundance in the second year, including exotic annual grasses. The spread of exotic grasses in CRSP is a plant community change that may be of concern to resource managers. As forest succession is a long term process, it is important to continue monitoring vegetation recovery.

Description:
We monitored natural and artificially regenerating shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) seedlings and their associated herbivores in forests stands that suffered extensive overstory mortality due to the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis). Seedling performance was evaluated based on survival and absolute and relative growth rates. Trapping stations were established to monitor the abundance and seasonal activity of pine regeneration insects. Seedlings were regularly inspected for the frequency and severity of herbivore pressure. Seedling performance, insect abundance and activity, and herbivore pressure were compared between stands treated with prescribed fire and untreated controls. Survival and absolute growth rates were greatest for naturally regenerating seedlings. Naturally regenerating seedlings grew more vigorously in the burned areas, but prescribed fire did not influence the growth of planted seedlings. Relative height growth comparisons indicated the growth potential of planted seedlings was not significantly different from that of the natural seedlings. Herbivore pressure was greater on natural regeneration, possibly due to superior seedling health and vigor. Pine weevil (Hylobius pales and Pissodes nemorensis) and Nantucket pine tip moth (Rhyacionia frustrana) abundance and herbivore pressure did not differ between the burned and unburned stands, but there was a significant interaction between sampling date and prescribed fire on their seasonal activity. Conifer sawfly (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) abundance and activity was effectively suppressed by prescribed fire treatments. Pine webworm (Tetralopha robustella) infestations occurred with greater frequency and severity on seedlings growing in burned areas. Mammalian herbivory was minimal. Herbivore-induced seedling mortality was low, and herbivory did not reduce seedling growth. Growth of naturally regenerating shortleaf pine seedlings was greater in burned plots.

Microsite patterns of conifer seedling establishment and growth in a mixed stand in the southern Alps [An article from: Forest Ecology and Management]

Description:
In many forests of the Alps, permanent forest cover and, therefore, its continuous renewal is the main silvicultural goal. Regenerating these forests must be based on a sound understanding of the ecology of the tree species in question. The regeneration of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) in the upper montane zone of the southern central Alps has so far received little attention. The aim of this study was, therefore, to characterize the ecological niche for the establishment and growth of silver fir and Norway spruce seedlings in this zone. The study was conducted as a case study on a plot of 1.5ha in the upper montane zone of southern Switzerland, at an altitude of 1380m. The basal area of the mixed Norway spruce-silver fir stand was 43.7m^2ha^-^1. Seedlings were censused on 375 plots of 1.0m^2 area. Seedling density was 1.30+/-4.25m^-^2 (mean+/-standard deviation) for Norway spruce and 0.87+/-1.50m^-^2 for silver fir. Logistic regression models were used to test the effect of microsite characteristics on seedling occurrence, and general linear models for effects on seedling height growth and biomass increment. Most seedlings received less than 10% light (photosynthetic photon flux density) as compared to values in the open. Silver fir occurrence was positively related to microsites at the edge of canopy trees, but unrelated to ground cover type, light and micro-relief. Norway spruce occurrence was only, and positively, related to the presence of mosses. Height growth and biomass increment of seedlings of both species were only loosely correlated with microsite conditions. Seedlings without canopy cover grew faster than those under canopy cover, probably as a result of light and moisture limitations under the canopy of adult trees. Diffuse radiation was positively correlated with average annual biomass increment of silver fir, but not of Norway spruce seedlings. In general, the results suggest that silver fir seedlings have less specific microsite requirements than Norway spruce seedlings in terms of ground cover. They are also more shade tolerant, and therefore, grow faster than Norway spruce in low-light environments of the upper montane zone of the southern Alps. While the microsite concept can be helpful in designing silvicultural operations, it has limitations when only patch characteristics that are easy to assess are used, and others neglected. Finally, our study suggests that counting the number of green shoots is a promising method to quickly and non-destructively estimate the biomass of a great number of small seedlings.

Fun Places to Go with Children in Northern California: 9th Edition.......2007-07-27
This book is great to find new and fun things for kids to see.
It is the only guide book that I could find with activities and sights to see in Northern California for children.
Travel Guide to Be With Your Children.......2001-11-16
I received this over 3 years ago as an anniversay gift from my wife. Our son was 4 months old at the time. Since then, we have put this guide to great use. On weekdays, my wife and son use it. On weekends my son and I use it for guy-bonding adventures. Sometimes all three of us get to the same fun place together, particularly on vacation.
The book will become part of our family history as we scribble our son's date 1st visited in the margin next to each entry.
Yes, it's due for revision. We hope 2001 will bring an update for those so inclined to want one. We'll hang onto our copy and keep scrawling in our own updates and corrections.
We've been to six of the destinations on the Top 11 Places list in the front. That list is handy to give us a goal to get ourselves to every place on that list.
My son's personal favorites include SF Exploratorium, Six Flags Marine World, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Jack London State Historic Park, Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park. There are also gems of little museums that I have enjoyed bringing him along to enjoy, such as the Silverado Museum in St Helena which pays tribute to Robert Louis Stevenson. Without this book, we would never have found such a rich variety of fun places to share with our son.
Get it and "365 TV-Free Activities You Can Do With Your Child," by Steve & Ruth Bennett. Your children will thank you much later for the time you spent being with them!
Loved it, but it needs to be updated.......2001-02-25
My children really enjoyed visiting about 270 places out of the over 300 places identified in this book. The age range for each visit was given, so we were able to pick and choose appropriate places to visit. The phone numbers and the dates/times the places are open are invaluable. The places are listed in geographic order, so you can visit the places pretty much in order.
Unfortunately, it has been over four years since the book was updated, so much of the information is outdated. We are looking forward eagerly for the next edition.
Too Many Restaurants.......2000-05-21
Please! Resaurants are to children what fire is to the Scarecrow! I found this book extremely disappointing because more than half of it focuses on dining and museums both of which most children I know would loath to enter. It listed places like Greens Restaurant (an excellent choice but not for kids) and Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. Both of these would be sheer torture for the average 4 to 9 year old. I really can't understand how the publisher allowed this book to be released as guide for children's activities. The author takes the trouble to list such overexposed restaurants as the Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood (a guide for teenagers maybe?) and misses many of the authentic pleasures for kids in Northern California. There are a few good children's activities listed like the Hershey Chocolate Factory in Oakdale but the bulk of the book is strictly for adults. I want my money back!

I returned this book because it is included in "To the Ends of the Earth".
3rd part of trilogy and doesn't stand alone.......1999-11-18
Wonderful prose, beautifully observed character study, as WG slips into the skin of an extremely priggish and snobbish early twenties aristocrat as he comes of age and begins to understand a little more of the virtues of the ordinary people around him. Sea journeys of that era were long, tedious, largely uneventful and extremely uncomfortable. All 3 books in the trilogy carry this perfectly: the maritime atmosphere is conveyed as perfectly as the arrogant character of the narrator. However, the tedium of the journey also comes across in the virtually non-existent plot which makes the books drag on somewhat. It is probably, though, as brilliant description of the English class system at the start of the 19th century as you will read. I believe that the books in Trilogies should be able to stand alone, if they are to be sold separately, & on that basis, this trilogy definitely fails. I'm glad I read it as a single 750 page tome.

A nice story.......2005-05-06
It's raining and Fireman Small's firehouse is leaking. Until the roof is patched Fireman Small will stay at the Pink Hotel. After working all day, Fireman Small expects to have a peaceful night. But when a fire breaks out in the hotel, it is up to Fireman Small to rescue the guests.
Fireman Small: Fire Down Below! has likeable characters, is written in rhyme and has colorful illustrations that will please those youngsters between the ages of two to four.
Our favorite book.......2002-07-10
My 3 ½-year-old son loves Fireman Small. He identifies with the fireman's diminutive stature and is entertained by the shenanigans of the silly animals he rescues. We both think Fireman Small Fire Down Below! is the best book ever. The illustrations are deceptively simple. From my son's point-of-view they are easy to understand and lively. I find them witty, complex, and beautifully composed. The singsong rhythm of the text makes it easy for me to read it over and over--as my son demands. Unlike many children's books, this one rewards multiple readings with new surprises. Don't miss the little mouse who turns up in odd places. While this book definitely charms kids, there are also amusing little vignettes that appeal to a grownup sensibility.
Fire Safety made fun!.......2002-03-06
Fireman Small returns in this humorous story with an important message about fire safety. Yee uses a variety of fire safety words and phrases in order to help young children learn what to do during a fire, for example: ýNo, no, No, not the elevator!ý, ýgrab a wet towel to cover your headý, ýstop, drop, and rollý and others. With the fire on the bottom floor of the hotel, Fireman Small has to help the people get to the roof. In humorous drawings and rhyming text, Yee shows Fireman small feeling the door to see if it is hot, pulling the fire alarm, knocking on doors to get guests out, etc. Great for a read aloud story time, especially during Fire Safety month. Some vocabulary terms (hotel, elevator, stairwell, fire escape) may need to be introduced prior to the reading, particularly in areas where children are not familiar with multi-story buildings.
