Customer Reviews:
Easy, enjoyable read.......2007-03-12
I truly enjoyed reading this book. Mr. Stevens does a fantastic job of focusing on what is entertaining and interesting. He does not dwell on useless facts that typically bog a book down; instead he tells witty little stories of his experience. I received this book on a Friday and finished it by Sunday it was a quick highly enjoyable read.
Excellent.......2006-09-19
After reading some of the other comments, I can only conclude that there is a serious humour deficit amongst some segments of the Amazon book reviewing population. Only the hypersensitive or the irredeemably politically correct could possibly fail to enjoy this book.
The naysayers make a big deal about the author poking fun at the native Africans, but fail to notice the amount of self-depreciation he also engages in. Ultimately, you get the sense of an inexperienced but well-meaning traveller who was completely unprepared for Africa but who realises it and sees the funny side of his own naivete. He is poking fun at himself as much as anyone else. And assuming that the tales he tells of African bureaucracy are true - and having experienced it myself, I'm inclined to believe them - why on earth should he not have a laugh about them?
As a storyteller, the author has a real gift and I found the book difficult to put down.
One star subtracted only because of the abrupt and wholly unsatisfying ending.
This isn't paradise.......2002-05-09
This book, first of all, is not the typical "vacation book" one may purchase to motivate themselves with tales of lovely places and experiences to relish on your long awaited exotic South African adventure.
It should be acknowledged that this is a tongue in cheek review of either an ignorant gentleman, or an educated travel writer delivering just what the reader loves to read. Taken too seriously, the book is offensive. Taken too literally, one can barely believe anyone so STUPID would undertake an assignment such as the author does with no preparation whatsoever. Taken modestly, with appreciation for the genuine spirit of all people, one can easily see the unique capacity the African people have to live life and share generously with strangers passing by.
The endemic frustrations of travel are mirrored constantly by Mr. Stevens. In comic reproductions, it is recalled for the benefit of the reader, of course. The stories are hilarious and bittersweet. Many times I relished the fact that I was home and not experiencing the agony he was. Many more times, I assured myself that I would never subject myself to such unprepared punishment. But, this is what titillates a travel reader, experiencing a travel writer's life in the insured lounger of one's insured home. I appreciate those that cast their fate to the winds, and allow their adventures to take shape according to chance. It was just such opportunities that the author encountered. Unexpectantly, and often at times of great distress, he and his companion were invited into the townspeople's homes. Later, after being fed, bathed and liquored, solid friendships formed, and the true spirit of traveling in Central Africa was appreciated.
Great book for a long flight.......2002-02-09
This is just the book to read on a long flight in economy class. Any delays and discomforts you have to put up with will fade by comparison with what Stevens experienced. It's a hilarious account of travels in Central and West Africa. (incidentally at that time, the 1980's, Algeria was relatively safe).
Africans might have a legitimate gripe with the way they are portrayed but most comic travel books tend to portray the inhabitants of a country as childish or incompetent. Read Dickens's "American Notes." I would have liked to hear the author's ideas on why things are as they are in Africa. Whose fault is it? What can be done? What will happen in future? This may be complaining that he has not written a different book but I see that he is, according to the jacket a "political consultant" so he must have some opinions.
Disappointing.......2002-01-15
A man goes to the Central African Republic, with minimal preparation and next to zero knowledge, to drive an abandoned car back to Europe. Of course, he runs into border guards and various officials, who eventually become fodder for his "wit". This account of his "adventure", even though it may be completely true, leaves much to be desired: the author is annoyingly whiny and both an egoist and egotist. He goes for laughs, not much else, and only partially suceeds.
Somehow this book reminds me of Abbott and Costello's "Africa Screams" -- everything about Africa in "Malaria Dreams" is told in a ridiculous and exaggerated manner. The key difference is that we know that Abbott and Costello are comedians (and their movie is a half century old), while "Malaria Dreams" wants to be accorded the respect due to a non-fiction book.
This is one of the poorer examples of the every-foreigner-who-goes-to-Africa-thinks-he-should-write-a-book phenomenon. Better examples of this genre are:
"The Ponds of Kalambayi" by Mike Tidwell;
"French Lessons in Africa: Travels With My Briefcase in French Africa" by Peter Biddlecombe; and
"Native Stranger: A Black American's Journey into the Heart of Africa" by Eddy L. Harris.

The book is a dense collection of new paintings, works on paper, installations, sketches and notes, inspiration snapshots, and pieces made specifically for its pages.

“An unusual marriage of abstraction and representation”—Art News
“For those inclined to debate the line that separates graphic design from fine art, there is no better case study than Ryan McGinness.”—Metropolis
“McGinness is on image overload.”—the Boston Globe

Customer Reviews:
a book of inspiration and information!.......2007-07-23
This book provides a ton of pictures of Ryan's work and some inspiration for those aspiring artists. There was also some details of his installations which can be helpfull.
Gift for grad.......2006-10-31
My daughter's boyfriend is a graphic artist and very quiet. For graduation he really wanted books to add to his library for inspiration. After some sneaky work by my daughter we ordered this plus a gift card for another book. He was very excited and appreciative. Turns out this was the one book he really wanted.
Inside the Mind of an Artist.......2006-02-22
While primarily a portfolio of Ryan McGinness' various screenprint creations of symbol and floral heavy artwork pieces of the past few years, Installationview also treats itself as a guide into the inner workings of McGinness' art style, from inspiration through sketches and onto the walls of galleries and households. Although there are only a few pages of random interviews with the artist, this focuses the importance on the details and process of reinterpretting and displacing symbols and ideas that we are accustomed to.
Absolutely fantastic!.......2005-11-05
This book is an amazing showcase of Ryan's newest works, but is also is a fairly good retrospective on some of his older pieces as well. The reproductions are exquesite (think Communication Arts), with plenty of close ups so that you can really see what's going on in these multi-layered works. Scattered throughout the book are dozens of preliminary sketches along with the completed illustrations-an excellent insight into his visual process.
I just got this book last night at the Beautiful Losers show in Tampa and have not yet had a chance to read through the essays, but at a quick glance they also seem to be thoughtful and enganging.
Highly recommended!

Book Description
Art. FLATNESSISGOD presents a thorough exploration of the basic practiceof seeing and consuming the second dimention. The pages contain paintings, basic design studies, image and type experiments, logo developments, layouts, graffiti converted into corporate logos, art haiku, and mistranslated text from Japanese candy. Ryan McGuinness is an artist who has exhibited his work internationally and has been responsible for numerous events and pranks. His work makes strong social commentary on iconography, language, and historical and contemporary symbolism. His use of visual codes and signifiers subverts the very systems in which he operates. He has designed music packaging, posters, magazine spreads, and corporate identities for some of today's major bands, publications, and organizations.
Customer Reviews:
Ryan is awesome...but this book is a little weak........2003-09-19
I'm familiar with Ryans' "art" work, and it truley is inspiring. So I bought this book and got a bunch of his logo and design stuff...which is cool...just not exactly what I was looking for.
mediocrityisprevalent.......2001-01-19
well, where to start. i'm glad i didn't buy this book, it's a complete sham, which may very well be the point - but it's completely superficial, and insulting to real graphic designers and design students to pass these exercises off as a touchstone of modern design principle. the dadaist overtones are not lost on me, but the straight forward design solutions are just that - straightforward, highly derivative (IF NOT TRITE), and quite frankly, boring. if this is the present and future of design, we're in serious trouble. i'm the biggest proponent of thumbing my nose at established design, but you have to know who you're thumbing it towards. breaking from the past requires a knowledge of that past, i see no evidence of such hind- and/or fore-sight in this book. it's been reiterated ad nauseum that picasso was probably the finest draftman of his day, if not history. point being he didn't simply begin with cubism or collage. i fear that the computer has caused such a horrible deterioration of the design process, that this book is what the masses will consider 'good' design. unfortunately those masses include potential clients and students who are our future designers. for those students i recommend beale, lustig, hoffman, rand, lissitzky, malevich, mondrian. go to the source, otherwise you've resigned yourself to a future of luke warm, rehashed gruel. eat up kiddies, hope you choke. this doesn't deserve any stars in my opinion, but as a matter of default i must give it 1. designers are not rock stars, but this guy is the equivalent of britney spears - all filler, literally and figuratively.
cover design.......2000-02-05
i wish he had used red on the cover..
graphical and fantastical.......2000-02-04
Just three words...WOW! The paragon of graphic design. I just wish it would have come out three years ago...I could have saved a fortune on graduate school.
What your design should be more like.......1999-11-03
McGuiness tells the designers of the world to stop for a few brief seconds and consider the melange of visual stimuli that we wade through every day. He both shows us how and asks us why we so easily idendify with the vernacular. The ideas in this book are simply and effectively illustrated and serve as a modern suplement the other great graphic design references such as Gregg Barryman's Notes on Graphic Design.

Book Description
Sponsorship is a Ryan McGinness book documenting and expanding upon the ideas and images to arise from an exhibition staged at Shepard Fairey's BLK/MKRT Gallery in Los Angeles in 2003. Sponsorship forwards an intense dialog amongst many of the artists central to the corporate sponsorship debate through a series of 19 interviews. Responses to McGinness' probing questions regarding accepting corporate backing for artistic endeavors and dealing with companies great and small run the gamut. Sponsorship features interviews with FUTURA, Barry McGee (TWIST), KAWS, Romon Yang (RO-STARR), DALEK, David Ellis (SKWERM), Brendan Fowler (BARR), Todd James (REAS), Christian Strike and essays by Carlo McCormick, Jacqui Millar, Steve Powers, Shepard Fairey, Adam Glickman and Rob Walker.

Book Description
It's hard to say how Dalek got to where he is today. He really doesn't like to talk about it. So what's left? What are Space Monkeys? Where are they from? Are they born alive, or are they incubated in egg-like vessels? Why do they smirk at us as if they know something we don't? Why do they always march to the left? Is there a mother ship calling? Are their hearts situated on the left side of their bodies like ours? We can only guess.
Even when they are suffering from what would be moments of human weaknesslike a hole in the head or a recently amputated limbthey continue to smile and stare, assuring their control of the moment. They stare at us with one large orb of an eye, unintimidated and steadfast in their mission. The eye of the Space Monkey can threaten like a cocked and steadied gunit can insult you without warning, or invite you into a happy, carefree world. In Sonic Order of Happiness, Dalek's second monograph, we are once again whisked far, far away, to a place where Space Monkeys reign.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for fans of Dalek and urban art.......2007-04-27
This book has amazing pictures of Dalek's artwork. The full page picture spreads make this a book for easy viewing, not for reading. (Which is just fine by me, because I love pictures!) Dalek's signature character, the Space Monkey, graces the compositions with his devious smile making you wonder "what is this guy up to?" There is so much going on in each spread that you don't want to turn the page in case you'll miss something. This book is great for all fans of urban art and collector qee (toys).

With this book artist Ryan McGinness has made a unique one-of-a-kind visual portrait of the comedian Carrot Top and taken contemporary portraiture into a new realm. Carrot Top - Wacky Genius.......2003-10-27
I love the Top and think he's the best. Here is the best inside look at the man behind the myth! Carrot Top is both funny and amazing.
ok.......2003-07-29
well i thought this book was ok i really like carrot top so i thought just looking at all the pictures was cool but maybe thats just because im kind of obsessed with him but if your someone looking for info then i wouldnt recommend this book the whole book is nothing but pictures so hey if you want pictures then the book is great but otherwise it's probably not for you
This isn't supposed to be about Carrot Top........2001-08-18
Perhaps the single greatest problem with other reviews of this book: they think it's about Carrot Top. Ryan McGinness usurps the iconography of contemporary culture into visual designs that force a re-examination of the source and the viewer. That's big kid stuff, but this is a monograph by an artist, not a picture book about a comedian. If you aren't familiar with Ryan's work, "flatnessisgod" is a great place to start.
I liked it TOO!.......2001-07-18
This book is not what you might expect, it's BETTER. A very colorful "out there" and one-of-a-kind art book that perfectly complements all the funny great things Carrot Top has done including those awesome new AT&T commercials. I too had a problem with the binding and sent mine back - apparently the first 50 copies were glued wrong. I got a super nice letter from the publisher AND a perfect brand new copy of the book - signed by Carrot Top!
i really liked the book...sorry if u didn't.......2001-07-16
hey there....i ordered my book on line and i loved it...it has plenty of beautiful pics about Carrot Top as well as alot of art surrounding the book...i'm very happy w/ it...sorry others may not be...it was more of an art book[post modern art grafics surround the photos] not a tell or gossip book like alot of people may have thought...i think it was a great project for both the preformer Carrot Top as well as the artist ryan McGinness and and shows many different sides of this preformer which alot of people may not know or are curious about....i also feel that it was geared towards a younger crowd like the collage age /post collage fans thats why alot of older/middleaged people who see it may not appreciate it like i have -ami
