Customer Reviews:
Just what I needed!.......2007-05-01
EXCELLENT book! I needed a suppliment to a Plant Phys course I was taking which didn't assign a book, purely lecture based. This book has great graphics and is easy to read!
Nice Book.......2002-08-27
Well, this is a great beginner's textbook to Plant Physiology, especially when you have very little background in the field. (I major in Physics and took Plant Physiology as an elective.) The text is quite easy to understand, and there are great diagrams to complement the text. However, the text is getting a little bit out of date, as new plant hormones and genes are being discovered at a rapid pace right now. Overall, it was a pretty nice book for someone being introduced to the field.
an excellent review on plant physiology for students.......1999-07-14
I teach plant physiology at the University of paris. I have bought the first edition of this boor five years ago and I have bought the new one about one month ago. It was a concise, clear and well up to date documented review. I appreciate particularly all the section on bioenergetic and transport in solutes in relation with morphology and development of the plant. I appreciate also very much the part on the influence of the light either for the classical phytochrome or to the appartition of the effect on the blue light. Scheme are simple, but precise and well descibed. This book was a very good intermediate between books of pure biochemistry or pure morphology. All information is integrated and well discussed. In the domain of the plant physiology I think really on my knowledge that this book was actually, in the domain of the plant physiology, one of the best review, and perhaps the better.
It is a useful tool for understanding plant physiology........1999-02-20
I teach plant physiology for biological sciences students in Bogotá, Colombia. I think this book is excelent. Also, it is written in a comprehensive English, and explains clearly the principles of plant physiology for everyboby including Spanish speakers. It is a very good way to motivate undergraduate students with the knowledge in plant physiology. I would liKe to congratulate the authors.
New Edition.......1998-07-24
The Second Edition of Plant Physiology builds on the strengths of the First Edition by integrating modern, state-of-the-art approaches to the study of plant function, particularly in the areas of gene regulation and molecular genetics, cell biology and signal transduction, and bioenergetics, into the framework of traditional plant physiology. The Second Edition also reflects the growing importance and prominence of biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology in the field of plant physiology. Each chapter has been thoroughly revised to reflect new developments in the field. In addition, several new chapters have been added, including chapters on "Cell Walls," "Growth, Development and Differentiation," and "Blue Light Responses." A new chapter entitled "Gene Expression and Signal Transduction" provides a summary of current models for the control of gene expression and cell signaling pathways in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, parti! cularly those topics relevant to plants. As in the First Edition, expert contributing authors provide authoritative accounts that include important recent advances in their fields. These contributions are integrated into the unified style that made the First Edition a benchmark in the teaching of Plant Physiology. The Second Edition is extensively illustrated and will be published in two colors.

Reference bibliography.......2007-06-12
This is an essential bibliography as a reference to introducing students for the Plant Pathology science.
an excellent text.......2006-10-07
This is an excellent introduction to plant pathology and the kind of book one tends to hold onto to use as a reference after finishing their coursework. I have known plenty of graduate students who've held onto their copies, and I've really never heard any serious criticisms of this book. The coverage is broad, and it will serve as a useful, interesting and highly readable reference for those with interests in bacteriology, virology, mycology, botany and a variety of other fields that overlap with aspects of plant pathology. Typically when I rate textbooks I am fairly harsh because the cost is generally high while contents often leave much to be desired. In my opinion this book is an exception, and I think the cost reasonably reflects the value of the information contained.
Gold standard for general phytopathology. .......2006-08-04
I have been out of Phytopathology since the fall of 1971. Over the years I have; from time to time; skimmed journals like Mycologia and Phytopathology. So the old urge came back and I bought this text on the recommendation of a friend.
This is an excellent text book on general plant pathology. The scope is extensive and I was delighted that a goodly portion of the book explores host pathogen interactions with a microbiological slant. My late, learned, and very noble professor, Dr. R. K. Hegde would have been thrilled to no end considering that the book generally follows his outlines of PL-PATH 600. Dr. Hegde Sir, whereever you are, remember that seminar in May 1968 on the basidiomycetous Fungi with Dr. C.S.Holton in the audience and your passioned pleas for more biochem data? Well those questions are explored to some extent in this book.
If you have any interest in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or plant science get this book. Most definitely a classic.
Best textbook on Plant Pathology.......2005-10-09
This is by far the best reference on the subject of Plant Pathology. It will be useful not only to plant pathologists, but to other plant scientists and biologists as well. George has done an excellent job in bringing his now famous textbook up to date. I have many books on Plant Pathology; this is by far the best. The fifth edition includes many new pictures and drawings to illustrate the concepts relating to diseases of plants. Plus many new sections dealing with the state-of-art of this science. George says this will probably be the last edition he will write. What a way to cap such an illustrious career!
A Classic Textbook.......2005-10-03
Agrios has upgraded and improved his classic Plant Pathology textbook. I own the 4th edition, and I was uncertain at first if I should buy the 5th edition. It was defintely worth it. Not only is there considerable new information, there are also many more helpful pictures and diagrams. Plus, many of the old graphics that appeared in black and white in the 4th edition are in color in the 5th edition. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
This revision of the now classic Plant Anatomy offers a completely updated review of the structure, function, and development of meristems, cells, and tissues of the plant body. The text follows a logical structure-based organization. Beginning with a general overview, chapters then cover the protoplast, cell wall, and meristems, through to phloem, periderm, and secretory structures.
"There are few more iconic texts in botany than Esau’s Plant Anatomy… this 3
rd edition is a very worthy successor to previous editions…" ANNALS OF BOTANY, June 2007
Book Description
Unlike many other plant anatomy textbooks, the 18 chapters in this volume incorporate information from the latest research in cellular and molecular biology as related to plant development. Topics include the integrative significance of plasmodesmata and the concept of the symplast, the concept of multicellularity, the role of the cytoskeleton in development, signal transduction, and the genetic control of development. Brief sections on evolution and function are also included. The textbook has been designed for undergraduate and graduate students with a basic knowledge of plant science. .
Book Description
The growth, reproduction and geographical distribution of plants are profoundly influenced by their physiological ecology: the interaction with the surrounding physical, chemical and biological environments. This textbook is notable in emphasizing that the mechanisms underlying plant physiological ecology can be found at the levels of biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology and whole-plant physiology. At the same time, the integrative power of physiological ecology is well-suited to assess the costs, benefits and consequences of modifying plants for human needs, and to evaluate the role of plants in ecosystems. Plant Physiological Ecology begins with the primary processes of carbon metabolism and transport, plant-water relations, and energy balance. After considering individual leaves and whole plants, these physiological processes are then scaled up to the level of the canopy. Subsequent chapters discuss mineral nutrition and the ways in which plants cope with nutrient-deficient or toxic soils. The book then looks at patterns of growth and allocation, life-history traits, and interactions between plants and other organisms. Later chapters deal with traits that affect decomposition of plant material and with plant physiological ecology at the level of ecosystems and global environmental processes. Plant Physiological Ecology features numerous boxed entries that provide extended discussions of selected issues, a glossary, and numerous references to the primary and review literature. The significant new text is suitable for use in plant ecology courses, as well as classes ranging from plant physiology to plant molecular biology.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference book.......2004-06-11
I use this book as a starting point on specific topics in plant physiology & ecophysiology from the plant cell to plant global communities. Indeed, it is not an intro course in plant physiology and very broad but I would recommend this book for graduate students, it is helpful.
A complex book - not for the beginner.......2000-10-11
This book covers a lot of ground, beginning with photosynthesis, plant-water relations, and plant energy balances before discussing ecological aspects of plant physiology. While it follows a logical progression from the cell to the ecosystem scale, the book is very difficult to read. The authors try to cover too much material in the book, omitting basic material in order to broaden the focus of the book. Therefore, it is definitely not for those who are looking for a basic book in either plant physiology or plant ecology. As a textbook, it is difficult for undergraduate students to understand, and seems to be geared towards graduate students and those already familiar with the field.
