Michael Graf discusses native higher vascular plants: flowering plants, ferns and their allies, and conifers. He covers the Tahoe region from Desolation Wilderness in the west to the Carson Range in the east and includes Donner Lake and Pass, Sagehen Meadows, Castle Peak, Pole Creek, Shirley Canyon, Granite Chief, and Alpine Meadows in the north; and Hope Valley and Carson and Luther Passes in the south. Each of these areas represents extensions of Tahoe Basin plant communities, and the entire region offers spectacular wildflower viewing.
The book is arranged taxonomically, thereby helping readers to develop a basic understanding of plant families, genera, and species. Each species account includes size, bloom period, and preferred habitat, and a full description follows, including clues for identification, notes on where to view the plant, use by humans, and additional ecological information. An introductory section discusses the evolutionary principles of plant taxonomy and the geologic and climatic history of the Tahoe Basin, its vegetative ecology, and its environmental history from the time of the Washoe Indians to the present.
An appendix provides a family key, a glossary, and drawings of plant anatomy. Throughout the book, taxonomic information is based on the 1993 edition of the Jepson Manual. With its clear descriptions, beautiful photographs, and information on everything from pollination to conservation, this book should be in the backpack of anyone who loves wildflowers, from amateur to professional field biologist.

WHile there are a number of flower books for the Sierra available, I found this one particularly useful because the plants are arranged by family so you can learn how to identify plants that are not in the range covered by the book. THe introductory section was also really informative and interesting.

Weekends in Tahoe are tons better with this book in tow. It is way cool to know the names of the gorgy plants and flowers with whom you are sharing your away-from-work time. I especially like being able to answer my two-year-old's question, "What's dat one momma," as he begins to take an interest in the names of the plant life surrounding him. A great gift for parents of children who go to Tahoe from time to time...or for anyone still young at heart/inquisitive enough to want to know more about Tahoe vegetation.

Without a doubt, this is the best plant or flower book I have ever read. The author clearly knows Tahoe Basin vegetation and natural history like nobody else. The key is masterful in its simplicity, the pictures spectacular and the text brilliantly concise (and sometimes witty!). You can leave your tent, cell phone and coffee mug behind, but you must not forget Mr. Graf's book when going to Tahoe.

I just took this book with me on a trip in the Sierra and found it very useful, informative, easy to use, and complete. The 60 page introductory section, which covers the natural history of the area and plant taxonomy, was very interesting and informative. The photographs are beautiful as well.

Get the new Edition.......2007-08-03

Amelia is on the money with her review.
Published in 1987, this book precedes 20 years of corrections and revisions. In 2006, Frank Almeda, Wilma Follette and Catherine Best released a revised edition from the California Academy of Sciences. Skip the edition reviewed here and get the most recent version, it is an essential reference for Marin Natural History.

Essential Reference for Marin Naturalists.......2005-05-18

This book is actually quite outdated as far as nomenclature goes and also does not give much detail about the species beyond that in the key. It has no pictures and is not for the casual wildflower enthusiast. It does have one great benefit, however, which is extremely detailed information about where and in what habitat a particular species may be found. This info is ectremely helpful in narrowing down plant i.d.s and determining the likelihood of a particular species occuring in your area.

Rohen's Photo Atlas: great book!.......2007-10-17

As a first year med student I found this book extremely helpful for Gross Anatomy (at least the first third); the pictures were great. Maybe a little too perfect to prepare for the practical, but nevertheless, this book is a wonderful resource.

Good but need compliment atlas.......2007-08-10

the atlas is good and descriptive. It is helpful and detailed for clinical use. For learning though there are better atlas, like the netter atlas. this is not to say that this atlas is bad. If this atlas is used in compliment to the netter atlas, learning is easier.

Not Perfect but Essential.......2007-03-09

This atlas of anatomy is an excellent addition to your anatomy textbooks. You get actual cadaver photos instead of stylized drawings of the 'typical' human. This atlas cannot be used without an accompanying textbook such as a Grey's Anatomy, but this can really make a difference for a practical. If people damage bodies and you cannot find the structure, this atlas allows you to pinpoint it with accuracy. It does have a few omissions here and there, but compared to the other atlases, this is much better.

Plentiful, clear photos and outstanding organization.......2007-02-14

I too, return to this atlas for the photo-realism. I especially appreciated the colored cranial bones (just like my favorite real model in class), colored bronchopulmonary segments of the lungs, and colored differentiation of the brain lobes. The photos of the skull break apart each individual bone into multiple angle views and pieces to expose you to all the hidden landmarks. They're also a good test of spacial recognition of the same landmark from multiple views and layers. Other photo atlases just don't have this breath and depth AND the photos in this one are the clearest I've seen. Most are shot on a black background for utmost contrast and clarity. The cadaver disections are clearly defined and distinctly detailed. Pencil sketches which further clarify the photos, are in black and white, using color only to highlight the featured system or organ, which is a different approach from Netter's.

Essential supplement for gross anatomy.......2007-01-06

I used this book along with Netter's atlas for my gross anatomy course in med school. However I found myself referring to Rohen far and away more often than Netter's. Because Rohen has actual photographs of cadavers it is VERY useful for studying for anatomy PRACTICAL EXAMS. What you see in Rohen is what you will see on your cadaver, whereas Netter's is pretty to look at but not at all realistic. Highly recommended!
