Ideal for horticulturalists, gardeners, and campers.......2001-08-11
Dale Bever's Northwest Conifers: A Photographic Key is designed provide a visual botanical identification guide to the northwest conifers. Avoiding the use of flower parts for species differential, and substituting full-color photography for technical verbal descriptions, Bever accurately portrays specific characteristics so clearly that anyone totally untrained in botany can easily key out any conifer from the northwest region of the country. Northwest Conifers is ideal for horticulturalists, gardeners, campers, outdoors enthusiasts, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in identifying the various members of this category of tree.
The ULTIMATE key to trees in the Northwest........1998-11-05
The ULTIMATE key to trees in the Northwest. The book takes the local trees and catagorizes them. I worked at a Boy Scout Camp over the summer as a Nature Counselor. One of the boys Dads showed this book to me. Being a a teenager I thought "I'll show him I'm smarter than the book." Well I beat the book most of the way, until the final question. Pointing to what I thought was A Ponderosa Pine tree, was actually a Jefferies Pine tree. They look exactly alike, the only two major differences were the Pine cones, and the way the needles smell when you break them. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in nature, and is a Teenager planning to work at a summer camp in the Nature department.

best tmb guide.......2003-08-12
We hiked the Tour de Mont Blanc (tmb) in August 2003 and used the previous edition of this book. A british couple shared this new edition with us and we could not wait to purchase one ourselves.
This edition is up-to-date and provides excellent information about clockwise and the more traditional counterclockwise routes. Each leg is accurately described with a detailed map and elevation chart. Refuges are listed, giving the hiker information about number of available beds and phone numbers to call ahead for reservations.

Made our trip.......2006-05-17
I used this book as a basis for a 3 week trip to the Swiss and Austrian Alps and it was invaluable. We stayed in recommended towns, Lauterburnen, Zermatt, and Alpbach and they were perfect jump off spots for hikes. We are day hikers, so it was nice to return to comfortable hotels in the towns. All of the hikes were on the mark for difficulty and scenery. I combined some of the shorter hikes into longer ones and used a couple of other books to find ways to extend some of the hikes in the book. We had a fantastic vacation and owe much of the success to this book.
Walking in Wengen.......2003-06-30
We followed the trails suggested in the Bernese Oberland section. We chose a walk rated as having medium diffiulty for the book. The descent was so steep that my 30-something walks-a-mile-to-work-everyday husband was not able to walk at all the next day because of the extreme pain in his knees. We missed out on all our subsequent hiking. We later learned (from our swiss maps) that the red-white-red trail markings meant "paths for experienced hikers". The yellow markings mean paths for everyone. There was no mention of this distinction in the book. And given the book's title, we would have thought that all of the walks would have been pretty easy. What would we have done if we were older or had our children along? I think hikers should ask their hosts in Switzerland to recommend walks. Our hotel (the Hotel Regina in Wengen) had many easy walks to suggest. I'd get a good map and order something better to read.

Helpful and down-to-earth.......2006-07-19
This book was very helpful for finding the best places to visit and the style was very down-to-earth, which we appreciated. I wish we had more time on our visit to see all that was mentioned in the book.
Fun, Facts, and Adventure.......2005-02-06
I used this travel guide on a recent trip to Europe and was very impressed! I have used other travel guides in the past, but I needed to buy 6 guides to get 6 countries. This one book included 6 countries. Often activities are for a certain age group or season, but this book hit ideas for every age group and every season.
I especially liked using the book for pre-planning of my trip. It offered many websites for areas of interest. Most travel guides refer solely to their own website. The short history sections allowed me to research topics before the trip.
I loved a recommended hike down a gorge in Garmish that was not mentioned in other guides.
Lucky Find.......2004-12-25
I use travel guides extensively when I travel. I made a fortunate find in a new Hunter Travel Guide, "The Alps" by Krista Dana. It is titled as an adventure guide, yet it is much more than that. We enjoy visiting local festivals and this guide has acquainted us with many festivals throughout the region of the Alps. In addition to a wide variety of physical activities specifically detailed, other types of adventures are highlighted such as unique cable car rides, train journeys, and how to dig deeper into the history of some locales. The history aspect jumped out at me as being unique to this guide in that it gives a brief look at an area's past and its culture. I have found this guide very user friendly for me, with symbols clearly marking each section, candid reviews of places to eat or stay, and contact information for vendors of activities that I am interested in. The "Adventure Guide to the Alps" was a lucky find for me, so I thought others might want to know about it, as well.
Laugh Out Loud Adventure Guide to the Alps.......2004-11-26
This book has been tremendous in helping me plan my dream adventure vacation to Germany and Switzerland. I love the useful tips and the laugh-out-loud anecdotes. Just the right balance of adventure and practicality... and not too stuffy like most of the travel guides. I picked this book because I really want to adventure the Alps and not follow the trampled path of the tourist pack!

I ordered this before Christmas and still have not received it.
A Stimulating and Practical Guide Book.......2002-05-03
I have perused many guide books on the Alps, but this is the best one for planning a trip. Why? 1.Instead of unintelligible maps and chunks of incomprehensible prose, this guide has clear maps and concise descriptions (plus good pictures) that help you decide which trip is right for you. 2.The author includes a great range of hikes, from day trips to 2-3 days to longer treks. Also summit climbing routes on mountains from easy to moderate difficulty, plus snowshoe hikes for winter. 3. Unlike guide books that are only about getting from point A to B, this one has a lot of really interesting information about the history, flowers, wildlife, architecture, and culture of the alps. It's a complete package for planning a great trip.
Trekking and Climbing in the Western Alps.......2002-04-01
An excellent book that will appeal equally to walkers and climbers. The selection is wide and varied and the format is easy to follow.A detailed and thorough first hand knowledge is much in evidence and the writer does a great job in promoting The Alps. One suspects that there will be more books to follow from this author.I am planning to do the Chamonix--Zermatt trek this summer and Hilary`s description makes it all the more enticing.I can`t wait to get there!!
very useful guidebook.......2002-03-23
nice price for a book detailing 22 different Alpine treks. Ms. Sharp includes practical "how to" information on each trek, as well as essentials on technical peaks that are accessible along the way. Her knowledge and love of the Alps is obvious from the text, and the photos are a real motivator to get over to Europe and do them all. Printed on high quality paper, this is a useful take-along resource for anyone who wants to include some adventure in a visit to Europe. Highly recommended.

Good Starting Point for Vacation Planning.......2000-07-11
This compilation of the best hiking trails in the Alps will give readers plenty of ideas for planning an unforgettable vacation filled with scenic beauty. All aspects of the trip are covered including accommodations, what to bring along, equipment and locale information. A vast list of tourist resources is also included. Although targeted towards Americans, this book is handy for any nationality.
The reason I deducted a star is due to the fact that some is the information is outdated. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to enjoy the wondrous beauty of the Alps.

Book Description
First in a new series of monographs that will be devoted to the most successful young designers in the Netherlands. Thonik, formerly known as Gonnissen en Widdershoven, finds itself in the exclusive company of a group top Dutch design agencies that have been able to attract attention and acclaim from their international peers. Thonik's style is not easily defined but it could be said that their designs are deceptively simple. In each work, underlying a minimum of graphic devices, is a hidden expressive gesture that brings agility and cheek to conceptual precision. In 1998 they won an award from ID Magazine for a book they designed titled ''Eternally Yours'', the subject of which was sustainable product development. In an environment where so much loud shouting is required to capture public attention the work of Thonik provides welcome relief.
