Book Description
Julia London captivated readers and critics alike with her acclaimed Rogues of Regent Street trilogy. Now the nationally bestselling author Romantic Times calls “a rising star” returns with the passionate story of a man and a woman pursued by secrets, shadowed by scandal, and surprised by love…
Eight years after fleeing England in the wake of a terrible scandal, Sophie Dane is no longer the trusting debutante betrayed by love. Now as companion to a worldly French widow, she returns to London where her arrival instantly sets tongues wagging…and attracts the roving eye of aristocratic Trevor Hamilton. But it is his mysterious brother, Caleb, in whom Sophie senses a kindred soul--and who captivates her as no other man has before. Reared on the continent, Caleb has come home to his ailing father--only to be shunned by society as a fortune-hunting imposter. Sophie, alone, seems to believe in him. But an unexpected series of events sets them both in flight once more. As scandal pursues them to a remote ancestral estate, a man and a woman haunted by the past will defy every convention on earth for a future in each other’s arms…

Slow starting.......2005-10-11
This story started out so slow I almost put it down several times... But WAIT! the story picked up steam and I'm very glad I held on. I only put 3 stars because it was hard to get started into the story.
Good book - not a 5 star but still good!.......2005-01-30
I think the biggest problem I have with some of the London books - it takes too long to get truly involved in them. There is just a lot of extra pages at the beginning that I am tempted to skip because they drag with discription which seems unneccesary! After you get into the true plot of this book, once they are in London - and certainly when Sophie finally meets Caleb - then things start to sizzle!! The way her family was trying force/encourage a relationship with society's accepted brother Trevor - who Sophie found offensive, boring and perhaps dangerous! But Caleb was a [...]and society had deemed him a fortune hunter. Sophie is torn between the love she feels for Caleb and what her family will expect of her. This is a touching story too about the love Caleb feels for his father and how Trevor seems to be keeping Will the father away from society and in a drugged state. Of course he has dispicable motives for his actions and eventually will be revealed. The love is strong between Caleb and Sophie and people will enjoy how they respond deeply to each other. I do not understand the problem with the epilog - if a writer is not going to continue with many other books to follow in a series - why not let us know how these characters deal with their lives beyond the end of the book!!
WHAT??? The Epilogue was outstanding!!.......2005-01-18
I'm confused by the comment made below that because of the epilogue the book was ruined. I won't ruin it for you when I say that it only made the book better. It was a nice, realistic touch to books that too often have only cheesy quick endings. It is still a 'happy' ending and one that I have read over and over again just to relive the emotion Julia London put into it. Read it and you won't be disappointed.
For the first time...I don't know what I think.......2005-01-16
I truely have mixed feelings about the elipogue. It was sweet but it did leave the book on a downer. I also, in general, do not like books where everything is explained to the reader through a long speech made by one of the characters to a group of other characaters. This may seem petty but we had the little bit of mystery explained to us over more than 10 pages. It would have been nice to have it come out a little more over time.
I did like the characters and they were developed well. Ian was cute and Caleb was truely one of the best leading males I have read in quite a while! I am impressed with the story and I liked the book pretty much until the end where we got a long drawn out explanation (catch-up story) and then the epilogue. It was a nice wrap up to the series however.
Beware the Epilogue.......2003-04-03
In truth this is an amazing piece of historical fiction. Being a 2 book a day reader, I've become jaded and it takes alot to get me to run home to read a book. This story had it, funny characters, great dialogue and a to die for hero. The book is by turns witty and charming and had the Eplogue NOT been included I would have added Julia London to my must buy list. But not now.. I literally threw the book across the room and as far as I am concerned I wasted 3 hours reading a book that in the long run left me feeling rather [upset]. So in fair warning don't read the Epilogue unless you DON'T like to think of "Happily Ever After."

Customer Reviews:
Essential and comprehensive for the Anglophile biblophile!.......2000-09-11
I first bought an early edition of this book (or perhaps a similar book) during my first trip to London in 1983, and for many years and several trips it was my bible...I was long past due to get a new version! This comprehensive and fairly thorough guide makes me wish I were in London now to visit some of the many bookshops I've missed on trips since (including the all-Doctor Who bookshop!)
"The Bookshops of London" is exactly what it sounds like: extensive listings of independent, specialty, and chain bookstores, with cross-listings so you can find the bookstore you want within the section you're reading. The editorial stance is fairly balanced and descriptive rather than judgmental (although Jackson seems a bit obsessive over the concept of the new Piccadilly Waterstone's superstore, and one familiar favourite shop of mine is described as "rather scruffy.") Addresses, phone and fax numbers, opening hours, and websites and email (where available) compliment the concise but targeted descriptions. An appendix lists shops by area (postal code) and in alphabetical order to aid in finding the right shop.
As comprehensive as this is, I'd love to see the nearest Tube stop added to each bookshop listing in the next edition--surely that's the quickest and easiest way to describe a bookshop's location! This small fault aside, this is an essential and comprehensive guide for the book buyer, collector, and bibliophile; no book-buying trip to London is complete without it. In no time at all, your own copy will be dog-eared and highlighted.

Book Description
Why is Lady Sophia looking for a lover?
And
could she seduce the most marriageable man in London?
Lady Sophia Sydney would do anything to ensnare the unattainable Sir Ross Cannon. Her goal—to ruin his reputation and cause a scandal that would be the talk of all London. So she insinuates herself into his life by gaining his trust and living in his house.
Every morning, her lush presence tempts him beyond all reason...the way she bends over the table to serve him the meals she has prepared...the way her hands oh, so gently—yet sensuously—brush against him. Every night, she promises with her eyes—and her body— that the hours before dawn could be spent in unbridled passion instead of restless sleep—if only he'd let her share his bed.
She knows he is falling more in love with her each day. But she never counted on falling in love with him. And she never dreamed he might very respectably ask for her hand in marriage...

Customer Reviews:
Another outstanding, lush, hot romance from the diva!.......2007-08-08
Lisa makes her hero, Sir Ross Cannon, the head of the Bow Street Runners. How cool is that? A hard, relentless, untiring, unstoppable, `unfeeling' machine of a man, Ross was widowed when his wife died in agonizing childbirth. Along comes Sophia, wanting employment, when her hidden agenda is to seduce Ross and bring him to ruin. Sophia's brother was imprisoned as a youth when Ross was his magistrate, and died from cholera in one of the rotting hulks on the Thames during his incarceration. Sophia is burning for revenge. However, this gets a bit weak when Ross, long deprived of any tenderness, allows himself to succumb not only to Sophia's seduction tactics, but he also becomes the predator in their relationship. How will Ross react when he discovers Sophia's true agenda? Also, there's a very interesting story surrounding Nick Gentry, a criminal type underworld character who makes a huge difference to Sophia and Ross's relationship: excellent blackmail material!
Great Author, Great Romance.......2007-05-08
So often vengeance themed romance can fall into formulaic plots. Not so with Lady Sophia's Lover. Sophia is determined to seek revenge on behalf of her brother. The object of her steely determination is Sir Ross Cannon, chief of the Bow Street Runners.
Sophia, an impoverished viscount's daughter, discovers that Sir Ross was the judge who condemned her brother John to an early death on a penal ship.
To carry out her plan to discredit and destroy him publicly she becomes indispensable to him as a secretary. She moves into his home and looks for possible incriminating and embarrassing evidence against him. However, she can find none as Sir Ross is as he seems, forthright, noble and honest.
Sir Ross is a widower and quite intrigued by Sophia. He is instantly attracted to her. Furthermore, he can tell she is attracted to him.
As Sophia spends more time with her employer, she releases the years of bitterness and allows herself to view Sir Ross with new eyes. What she sees is someone brave and a protector of the downtrodden.
However, she has so many secrets she does not believe that he can forgive her. Just when one secret is revealed another one takes its place.
Both these characters have great depth. Kleypas weaves their romance throughout the entire plot. The tension never waned and I was rooting for them on every page. The love Sophia has for her family and Sir Ross is fierce. Sir Ross is unapologetic about his desire for her. Sophia is no coy miss. She accepts and delights in Sir Ross's advances even when she is uncertain of her own feelings of revenge.
Lisa Kleypas.......2007-05-07
I can't say it enough. I love this author! So glad these books are mostly connected. I like every character she brings in.
Plot and Characters That Shine!.......2007-04-28
Lisa Kleypas is a magnificent writer with a way of making every story--both plot and characters--shine.
We immediately care for Lady Sophia as she worms her way into the notoriously upright (and celebate) Sir Ross Cannon's household. Becoming his secretary/personal assistant and household manager, her secret mission is to uncover some dirt on Ross, London's famous and powerful Chief Magistrate of Bow Street (the mid 1800's equivalent of the Police Chief), so that she can destroy him. Believing that Ross is responsible for her brother's death, Sophia is determined not only to raid his records but also to break his heart by making him fall in love with her, seducing him, and then abandoning him while publicizing their scandalous relationship.
However, Ross turns out not to be the sort of man Sophia envisioned at all. He is truly kind, just, and full of integrity--not to mention full of a great passion for her that only a will as strong as his could keep in check. As Sophia tries in vain to keep her heart safe, numerous entertaining plot twists keep the reader guessing while we watch the complex and delightful relationship between Sophia and Ross unfold.
Lady Sophia's Lover is a fun, moving, and ultimately uplifting rollercoaster ride that any fan of historical romance will tremendously enjoy.
Not the greatest, but enjoyable.......2007-04-22
I didn't find myself surprised, delighted or laughing, but it was still a good read. Sexual content: moderate.
