A Celebration of Ireland.......2007-02-26
This wonderful volume matches a gallery of photographs that truly capture the beauty of Ireland with a collection of blessings attributed to Irish saints, songwriters, poets, and Irish custom. The effect of the collection is both moving and comforting, especially to those who have been fortunate enough to experience Ireland first hand.
The photography heavily favors the wild and undeveloped Western part of Ireland; visitors may recognize scenes from the Dingle Peninsula and the Killarny area, among others. The blessings are a celebration of Irish spirituality; quotes from early Irish Christians mingle with customary blessings and songs and items from popular Irish writers. They together are an invocation to remember the simple and important things in life.
This book is highly recommended to the reader familar with Ireland and with its spirituality.
Beautiful and Charming.......2001-11-14
This is a Wonderful book! The pictures are very beautiful, vivid!
And the verses are lovely...I am just thrilled to have bought a copy. Our Public Library even ordered a copy after having looked through mine. Outstanding!! Truly.
A Photo Collection Of Great Interest.......2001-02-22
I lived in London for two years a decade ago and so had the opportunity to travel extensively through the stunning countryside of England and Scotland. I never made it to Ireland however and so purchased Irish Blessings in order to have a good look at what I missed. TOO MUCH!
This collection of photographs was taken from a number of different sources. It is a lovely, well-assembled collection indeed and many of the plates are of a very high quality. All are of interest.
The book is broken up into three distinct parts with the first concentrating on the land itself. The second part, "...Home And Hearth," includes numerous shots of both the interior of Irish dwellings and photographs of a diverse sampling of buildings, often in sumptuous settings. The final segment of Irish Blessings is devoted to means of travel about the country which includes photographs of boats by the sea, rivers, roads through the countryside, and the odd bicycle or two propped up against a wooden covered bridge or a village pub waiting to provide simple transport to their owners.
There are not many people represented in the collection but photographs of animals that are integral to Irish country life are ubiquitous . One photo of a dog lazily resting upon the back of a horse is devine. And a picture of a cow atop a wondrous stone wall abutting the sea offers a unique, special image.
The photographs in this portfolio are matched with Irish verse and song. That is a nice idea but I only wish that a bit of text which conveyed something about the locations depicted had been included as well. As it stands, there is no way to know where in Ireland each photograph was taken unless one was very familiar with the country beforehand. A small problem perhaps, in an offering of great beauty and spirit.
A Beautiful Coffee Table Book..........2000-06-17
I guess I'm partial to Irish things, but I think this is a beautiful book. Pages are split between pictures...landscapes, buildings, homes, and text... Irish blessings (May the road rise to meet you...etc.) and Irish poets. Not a book to read staight through, but a great display book for you and guests to thumb through during idle moments.
Book Description
Illustrations by Ippy Patterson. From Baby Blue Eyes to Silver Bells, from Abelia to Zinnia, every flower tells a story. Gardening writer Diana Wells knows them all. Here she presents one hundred well-known garden favorites and the not-so-well-known stories behind their names. Not for gardeners only, this is a book for anyone interested not just in the blossoms, but in the roots, too.

Wonderful reference for flower lovers..........2007-08-30
What a great reference book for all who love flowers. As a professional Florist, Event & Party planner in Seattle, WA, we use this book on a daily basis for customers asking quesion of flowers.
A must have...

She love it........2007-05-30
This little but informative book was a hit for my mom-in-law. She thought she knew all about flowers, but no. She was amazed at all the facts in this book. A real nice present for flower lovers.!!
100 Flowers book.......2007-04-02
I was a little dissapointed with this book. It was a lot smaller in size than I was expecting, and the illustrations are just black and white outlines, not color photos of each flower like I was expecting. They should call it "How 100 flowers got their names" instead.
Perfect gift.......2006-12-30
100 Flowers is more of a small coffee table book than a garden guide. It's sweet and interesting. It would be a perfect gift for mother's day, the lady who babysits the cat, your nicest gay neighbor. I would be interested in other things the author has done or seeing her on Martha.
Wonderful, charming book.......2006-04-26
This is a wonderful, charming book. Each section provides an interesting anecdotal essay about the flower it covers. However, do not expect completeness (of course, there are many more than 100 flowers out there, and more than could be said about each than is possible in a page or two).
Also, don't look for consistent information about flower naming or morphology. Rather, these are very personal essays on each flower. The essays usually include some historical information that has to do with how the flower was named. At times, this format feel forced--I would have liked the author to be able to paint with a broader brush, as I sense she wanted to. And I also think that of the 100 flowers there are a few she doesn't really like that much. (Well, me too!).
These minor objections to the form of the book aside, it's really incredibly sweet, and very educational. 5 Stars plus.
Customer Reviews:
I can't say enough about these books!.......2002-04-02
The entire series is excellent!!! I have all four and I highly reccomend them. They teach science, literature, native american culture, and give children a respect for the natural world at the same time. (there is even the occasional bit of math thrown in). My son loves doing the activities with me! Excellent for unit studies!
Great for Homeschooling Ecology Unit.......2001-08-02
We use this book as a homeschool social studies/ecology resource. Each section begins with a Native American story related to the topic of the chapter, then moves on to a discussion of the subject matter. Each section also has activities/experiments, questions for review and discussion, and recommendations for materials for further study. My kids really look forward to each lesson in this book, because the information is presented in a fun manner, and the activities are appropriate for a wide-range of ages!
Book Description
If you've ever wondered about the people and places immortalized in plant names, this enlightening and entertaining book will provide some answers. Legends in the Garden introduces 46 people and places — some familiar, others unknown — associated with popular garden plants. Rosa 'Burbank' honors Luther Burbank, the "plant wizard" of Santa Rosa. John Champneys and Philippe Noisette, key figures in the development of the rose, gave their names to R. 'Champneys' Pink Cluster' and R. 'Blush Noisette'. But who were Nellie Stevens (Ilex 'Nellie Stevens') and Frances Williams (Hosta sieboldiana 'Frances Williams')? This delightful book combines accounts of the lives of these intriguing characters with descriptions of the plants that bear their names and the stories of their chance discoveries or deliberate breeding.
Customer Reviews:
Who is that plant named after???.......2005-03-14
If you've ever wondered who the "Betty Corning" clematis or the "Carol Mackie" daphne was named after, then here's the book for you. Over 40 individuals who've had plants named after them are profiled here. Each person's biography and how their namesake came about is covered in a 2-4 page chapter. A photo of each person is included. A section in the middle of the book features color photos of the plants.
Among those included are Jane Bath (Bath's Pink dianthus), Molly Bush (heuchera), Vince Dooley (hydrangea), Katie Ferguson (rhododendron), Azilda Gerbing (rhododendron), Kim Hawks (echinacea), Frank Meyer (lemon), Jane Platt (magnolia), Betty Sheffield (camellia), Nellie Stevens (holly), George Tabor (rhododendron), Frances Williams (hosta) and many more.
Highly Entertaining.......2004-11-25
This book is a great read for anyone wanting to know where the names of plants evolved from. Linda Copeland and Allan Armitage skillfully put this book together by sharing the stories of the people plants were named after.
Learn the stories behind `Baths Pink', Calycanthus `Michael Lindsey,' or Heuchera `Montrose Ruby,' just to name a few.
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of getting to know these great people behind the plant. This book is a great read on a rainy cold day.
Legends in the Garden: Who In The World is Nellie Stevens?.......2002-11-26
I have always wanted to know how various plants got their names. This book is a great source for discovering the stories behind plant names. It is quite enjoyable and interesting. A delight to read! I highly recommend this book to everyone!... Even people who do not know much about plants will love to read these fascinating stories!

Customer Reviews:
Our girls LOVE this fairy book.......2006-01-28
The illustrations are really nice. Beautiful. Our 3 preschool daughers are very into fairies right now and they LOVE this book. They love the stories associated with all the flowers. Part of me would think the book would be a bit old for them, but not at all. They love it and want to read it over and over and over.
Enhanced pictures, cute text.......2004-12-16
My 5-year old enjoyed this introduction to the flower fairy friends. It takes the lovely drawings of Cicely Mary Barker and places them with photographs of flowers, and combines them in different ways. It is neatly done. The text describes the different fairies and what their personalities are like. It is sweet but uninspired. We're looking forward to reading others id the Flower Fairy Friends series.

"Good farmers are artists. They paint the landscape with squash, corn, celery, beans, and a cornucopia of other fruits and vegetables. Their tools are the rake, the hoe, the pitchfork, the shovel, and the shears. Like all artists, they seek to balance technique with heart and harmony." Maryjo Koch celebrates the beauty of the natural world, mixing plenty of charm and wit into the scientific formula. For instance, did you know that the dandelion is named for its jagged leaves, which resemble a lion's teeth?
Though most adults will already know the "body plan" of a flower, the information is presented in such an appealing fashion as to bring out the eager student in all of us. Each page takes a unique approach to its subject matter and shows off Koch's wide variety of illustrative styles--straight naturalist paintings alongside cherubs sleeping in a lily pond. "Barking up the right tree" is Koch's way of imparting a tidbit about the importance of a tree's bark and how not to damage a tree by toying with this outer layer. Venture through eccentric English gardens, Japanese gardens, formal French gardens, topiary, and the fine art garden. As Claude Monet said, "More than anything I must have flowers, always, always."
Customer Reviews:
gorgeous!.......2004-06-22
An absolutely gorgeous book-I cannot imagine why it has gone out of print! It is a great resource for artists and needlecrafters, as well as full of interesting information.
Aa captivating Science book.......2000-05-28
As a homeschooling mom I am always on the look-out for captivating books. This book is hand printed and ilustrated extensively in Maryjo's delicate watercolors. A "living book" that will enhance your scientific look at seeds, flowers, leaves, trees, and fruit. Her informative articles merge with her botanical illustrations like a Naturalists nature notebook. Perfect compliment to Handbook of Nature Study, by Anna Comstock and Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, by Edith Holden. Beneficial to all ages.
Book Description
Jack Sanders's colorful tribute to wildflowers is bursting with odd facts, ingenious uses, and bizarre superstition about some of North America's most beautiful and common plants. There are more than 10,000 varieties of wildflowers in North America, some rare, some so plentiful that they are designated as invasive weeds. Each has a unique story.
There's Bouncing Bet, a perennial common along the roads and railroad tracks of America. Like many of our most abundant summer wildflowers, Bet was brought over to fill colonial gardens. It's a beautiful plant, but also a useful one. Open up the stalk and its sap makes a fine soap. Colonial beermakers used to put a dab in to help the head on a brew. Doctors used it to wash wounds. Generally considered a weed, it's everywhere.
Or Coltsfoot, which pops up almost alone in winters, and was used in New England as a cure for coughs, the leaves boiled down in water. Asthmatics, Sanders tells us, used to smoke it for relief. For many years, apothecaries in France used Coltsfoot as its symbol, a surprising pedigree for a neglected "weed."
More a companion than a field guide, THE SECRETS OF WILDFLOWERS is a must-have for anyone who enjoys a walk in a meadow or a gaze outside.
Customer Reviews:
Great information........2007-06-22
A great book about some common and uncommon plants you have admired, but didn't know the names.
The Secrets of Wildflowers.......2007-01-18
This is an essential read for those that want to further explore in an in-depth manner wildflowers of all types. The story telling format blends science and folklore and flows in a pace that is most pleasing to the reader. Highly recommended for those that have any interest in this topic.
Fun read for wildflower fans.......2007-01-06
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. I photograph wildflowers, and reading these fun, little-known tidbits has been very informative in my research of the flowers.
Little Gem of a Book.......2006-07-31
This is simply a wonderful addition to any library. I was looking for a native wildflower handbook with a little extra, but this surpassed my expectations. You don't need to be a botanist or a naturalist to enjoy this offering. It has tidbits of fascinating information about native U.S. wildflowers, from its history to medicinal uses to mythological lore. The layout is nice and there are many additional artistic touches here and there to make it a pleasure to read.
I guarantee you'll never look at a wildflower the same way after reading this little gem.
Wildflower Wonders.......2005-08-30
"The Secrets of Wildflowers" by Sanders is phenomenal! I am a naturalist in training and this book has helped me tremendously to find interesting facts to share. I wish there were more out there like this one, but I have just not found them. "The Secrets of Wildflowers" talks about a lot of plants native to North America, which is why it is so special. I can't thank Jack Sanders enough for making my homework a thousand times easier.
Book Description
Once a coded language of emotions, desires, and unspoken messages, flowers had the ability to speak louder than words. Today the language of flowers is as relevant as ever. They can symbolize love, regret, passion, or remembrance, and have an ability to subtly convey a message that underlines the spoken word-if you know the right secrets and ideas.
Fascinated by the historical symbolism of blooms, buds, and leaves, Shane Connolly brings together his passion for creative flower arrangements with his knowledge of their deeper meanings. Fifty-seven arrangements are explained in detail, with instructions on how to prepare and style the flowers. Detailed text about the historical meaning and associations accompany each arrangement, allowing you to choose flowers for every situation and emotion from friendship to devoted love, or even farewells and regrets.
Complete with a comprehensive glossary and chapters covering expectation, births, and beginnings; innocence, simplicity, and youth; fun, frolics, and friendship; longing, loving, and lusting; anger, bitterness, and passion; forgiveness, happiness, and contentment; and remembrance, regrets, and farewells, The Secret Language of Flowers reveals a new way to speak your mind.

St. Martha Parish-Wide Bulletin Book Club December Selection.......2001-12-02
The monks of the middle ages can be heard singing Ave Maria, Ave Maria from the glossy, A. Joseph Barrish, S. M. illustrated pages of the St. Martha Parish-Wide Bulletin Book Club December Selection. Barrish, working with Schoenstatt Sister of Mary, M. Jean Frisk, has created a brilliant reminiscence of the time of incense and flowers in the Roman Catholic Church. Frisk, who holds a masters in Theology with Marian Concentration and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, gives us legends and meditations to ponder as we look at Barrish's stunning, full-page illustrations of dozens of flowers that bear a name or a mythical relationship to the Mother of Christ.
This selection leads us through our shared Christian spirituality in the natural beauty around us through a history of flower legends and names using flowers of the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Flight into Egypt, Maternity of Mary, Mary as Homemaker, Mary at the Cross, and Devotion Rewarded.
Among the legends told in mystery plays of the medieval times is that of Madelon who having nothing to give the Babe Jesus was led by the Angel Gabriel to roses blooming at the girl's feet. "The French poet, Emile Blemont, ended his story of Madelon with this quotation: Though thou art poor and hast no gold to bring, Though ice-bound earth no Heaven-sent flowers bestows, Yet give thy heart this Noel to thy King. This is the Legend of the Christmas Rose." (p. 48)
In addition to an excellent appendix, index, and bibliography of gardens and plant listings, this book also is a personal Mary Garden planner. Just in time for Chistmas gift exchanges to allow you to give more knowledge of Faith in a vibrant, beautiful, and interesting way. This quality publication gives artistically, as Christian art has, to those who enjoy studying the nobility of the world around them, as well as to those who plant gardens! (St. Martha, Okemos, Michigan Foundations in Adult Education, Fr. Jon Wehrle, Pastor)

Calming, inspiring, can't wait for spring.......2000-02-03
Mary's Flowers was a keeper from the time I opened the box. The cover drew me to the book, and as I skipped through the pages I knew for once in my life I had to begin on page one and continue.........not my usual way......I begin in the back........the drawings are magnificent, the stories fascinating and the relativity between the flowers and the Blessed Virgin truly inspiring. The book is one of the highlights of my collection. I only wish I had written it.... JoKay Miltenberger Arcanum OH

a very useful book!.......2005-11-30
My concentration for my major is ethnobotany, and this is a definite must-have addition to my collection! THe illustrations are wonderful! Each section done has at least one illustration and a good paragraph explaining its origins. I particularly enjoy the seasons section, as well as the chinese flower calendar and the japanese flower calendar. There is also a shortened "sentiments and symbolism" in the back, similar to a glossary, with basic meanings of every plant in the book. It is organized well, and very informative.
