Customer Reviews:
Lots of info packed into a small book!.......2004-05-20
I used this book for a recent trip to central Florida and found it very helpful. The book has lots of information on the theme parks and which shows and rides are most worthwhile. We only visited Disney's Animal Kingdom park, but found Taylor's suggestions right on the mark. We did not follow her advice to arrive early and boy, did we wish we had paid attention to that detail! I appreciated the information on the natural areas of Florida. Based on the book's recommendation, we spent a wonderful day at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore. We also spent time in Ocala, and this book has information on the sites in that area. Taylor is right: Silver Springs is a lovely, low-key attraction.
The main downside to the book is the lack of information on hotels --if you like detailed descriptions on hotels, you'll want an additional book or will need to use an online resource such as tripadvisor.com.
All in all, a great little book. Follow Taylor's advice to carry plenty of change for Florida's toll roads, and look beyond the few scattered comments in the book. I think good guide books have some personality, and I did not find the comments in this one offensive. For many travelers, myself included, some aspects of traveling in the South do come as culture shock, including the confederate flag that we saw flying above an orange grove right off the Inter-State!
Reasonable not more.......2004-05-05
After reading through the first couple of chapter you get the feeling that the writer didn't enjoy her stay in Orlando. Instead of providing more helpful information to the reader it seems that the author is focused more on sarcasm and snotty remarks. Still the book is an okay guide nothing more !
The author's response.......2004-01-09
I'm glad you found the information useful - I certainly worked hard on it! And I'm sorry you were personally offended by my remarks. In my defense however, I think my statement about "rednecks," taken in context, was not so bad.
For the readers' interest, here's the text:
"Rednecks, who refer to themselves as just that, can be found in many areas of Central Florida and are easily identified by their foul and racially derogatory language. Leave them in peace to wallow in ignorance, and don't go striking up any debates. In fact, if someone tries to engage you in one, you may just want to smile, nod and say 'uh huh' - it's just not worth the effort."
I agree, these are bold statements. But first of all, I'm talking about people who self-identify as "rednecks." And second of all, I think it's fair to say that people who speak derogatorily regarding race can be classified as ignorant. Either that or just plain mean, but knowing people personally who have derogatory impressions of nonwhites, I know that the latter (ie, "mean") is not necessarily the case! Some real sweethearts are racist.
Also, this wasn't in the warning section at all, just under "Society & Conduct" (right after some text about the wonders of Southern hospitality). In the previous paragraph, I made a statement about how nonstraight couples should be careful about their conduct in such regions, but I didn't comment on the possible consequences. But I think it's safe to say that gay people should be aware that it's not a good idea to show same-sex affection in some of those areas.
Since many readers of this book will be from other countries, I thought this information to be not only useful, but necessary. We can't expect foreigners to be familiar with US cultural norms from region to region.
I definitely made bold comments throughout the book; some things I loved, some things I liked, some things I didn't like, and some things I hate. But Lonely Planet is known not only for being informative, but also opinionated - that's why people love the books.
Again, I'm sorry you didn't like some of my opinions. Take heart that I love the South, have family in the South, and take pride in the South.

Customer Reviews:
A Must Read - but not a novell........2006-08-21
First of all, You have to keep in mind that Pigafetta was not a writer. Hes was a noble from Italy, serving on the Diplomatic corps (if could call that in those days) that heard that Magellan was about to start a voyage never done before. The Pigafetta's drive was to see what kind of market was out there and how it would change the geopolitics established.
Globalization. Today we use the web, blackberries and airplanes. In those days it was all about merchant ships, swords and cannon balls.
Not a Fun Read, but a Unique Resource.......2006-06-10
What can one do when your only source for a major historical event like Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe was, in all probability, written by a spy? Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian from Vicenza who is thought to have written his journal for the Venetians, the Pope, or the Emperor Charles V.
It is interesting that Pigafetta wrote very little of the voyage out to the Spice Islands (the archipelago that includes present day Indonesia and the Philippines), and even less about the return under Sebastián de Elcano, who took over after Magellan was killed in battle at Cebu in the Philippines. Most of his relation is concerned with detailed descriptions of the people and lands of the Spice Islands, including detailed glossaries of words in the various languages that might be of interest to merchants trading in the area. Just what you'd think one would do if he were reporting back to someone else.
As a reporter of people and cultures, Pigafetta was far ahead of his time. As a reporter of a voyage of exploration, however, he is somewhat inadequate. It quickly becomes apparent that the workings of the ship are not his concern. After describing the horrendous 98-day voyage across the Pacific, he ends up by smugly saying that he himself did not get ill -- possibly because he may have had his own private food stock. He describes the relatively placid Cape of Good Hope off South Africa as the most dangerous part of the voyage, probably because he had a rare peaceful crossing of the otherwise stormy Straits of Magellan.
This edition is not the most attractive, and typographically it is difficult to read. The maps provided by Pigafetta serve only to show certain islands with respect to one another, and do not help the reader of his relation in the slightest in terms of their topography or even shape. But then Dover is known for producing relatively inexpensive reprints of works that are in the public domain. Any blame on the edition falls on Yale University, who produced the original.
Well Worth it!.......2005-02-28
Just to be clear, this is not a novel. It is a *detailed* account of the first circumnavigation of the globe. It is readable and presents first-hand impressions of the voyage's travelers. It is an interesting piece of history. For those that have travelled to other countries, this book will make you recall some of the first impressions that people have from other cultures.
I wonder how people get interested about this book. For me, it was the nobel prize acceptance speech by Garcia Marquez in 1982 which included generous references to Pigafetta's story...
A difficult "must read".......2003-11-09
I actually bought this book for its description of the Moluccas/Maluku - the very "Spice Islands" this historic voyage set out to find.
While Pigafetta did write more about those islands than about anywhere else they called at, the old-fashioned style made this a hard read. Like those reviewing it before me, I struggled to get through even those chapters relevant to the Moluccas.
Still, it is an important and valuable first hand account of a remote region and of course of a truly historic voyage.
the read's a slog & this edition hinders the reader.......2001-10-29
I bought this book after having found out about it in Daniel Boorstin's "The Discoverers". I thought it was amazing that a firsthand account of the first voyage around the world had survived and yet appeared to be of so little renown. I thought that the reviewer from Lexington, KY's remarks about its readability had to be wrong, I mean, what a find this had to be!
I was wrong. This book is far from arresting. I, too, had to struggle to read more than a few pages a night. The book is not really about the circumnavigation of the globe, it was written as a present to Kings and Queens who, at that time, were mostly interested in the spice islands, where they were, and what their minions could expect to find once they found them. Accordingly, the great majority of the book is concerned with the Moluccas, the islands to be found around them, and descriptions of their respective peoples and customs.
As the KY reviewer pointed out before me, the endnotes are mostly a hindrance to the generalist, consisting almost entirely of really picayune differences between the "Yale MS" and several others. Only a handful of this type of endnote are helpful to the generalist. No attempt is made to separate the endnotes that would help a layman sort out the sense of a confusing passage or word from these others. The introduction is mostly a discussion of the differences between extant manuscripts.
This edition is also poorly constructed -- the text is near the binding so you want to open it wide, but the glue is so hard that you're afraid that you'll crack it, so you end up reading the sections near the binding at an angle. The illustrations reproduced have no geographical value and so much of what would be interesting about them is lost because they are reproduced in black and white.
I only give this two stars because Pigafetta's text is inherently interesting and I don't want to dissuade anyone from reading it. ...

Magellan Still Lives!.......2000-03-26
The best biographical book on this explorer yet! You can actually feel what Ferdinand Magellan felt during his voyage around the world. During his life between 1480-1521, he goes through many tasks, his age doesn't matter to him when he decides to circumnavigate the world. Who named the Pacific Ocean? He did! Pacific means calm. Did you know that? I bet you did not! You can find out more about his extroardinary life and achievements in this book. This book is great for bibliography writing, historical figure speeches, or just for plain fun and your acknowledgement.

Book Description
Determined to find a new and better route to Asia and the distant and profitable Spice Islands, Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain in 1519 on what would become the history-making first circumnavigation of the world. Magellan himself did not complete the journeyhe was killed by a poison arrow while on the Pacific island of Mactanbut the expedition he mounted forever changed the course of human exploration. Details of the journey, including Magellan's tools of navigation, the political battles for control over the valuable islands of the Pacific, and Magellan's final moments in battle, are all vividly portrayed

A nonfiction account kids will remember.......2001-11-05
Nancy Smiler Levinson's Magellan And The First Voyage Around The World provides a lively account of his 1519 journey with his fleet of five ships and almost three hundred men. Storms, disease, and attacks by natives marred his voyage. This reads like fiction but is a nonfiction account kids will remember.

A Difficult "Must Read".......2003-11-26
I actually bought this book for its first-hand description of the Moluccas/Maluku as seen by Magellan's expedition in the early 16th century.
While Pigafetta did write more about those islands than about anywhere else they called at during their long sail around the world, the old-fashioned style of writing made this a hard read and I struggled to get through even those chapters relevant to the Moluccas.

Ferdinand Magellan and the First Voyage Around the World (Explorers of New Worlds)
Jim Gallagher
Manufacturer: Recorded Books, LLC

Binding: Audio Cassette
ASIN: 1402501595 |
Product Description
From School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Colorful and compact, these volumes offer solid entry-level reading that is nearly on a par with good adventure fiction. The texts are lively and accessible, and the illustrations are well chosen and diverse: maps, portraits, facsimile letters and documents, historical drawings and paintings, and even photographs of the present-day places that these explorers once roamed. Plentiful sidebars extract main ideas from each chapter or offer interesting trivia about the men and their times. The authors provide a detailed background of the political, social, and sometimes religious forces that inspired the explorers to venture into the unknown. Occasionally, there is subtle fictionalizing in an attempt to explain what these heroes must have been thinking in times of triumph or duress, but it is not awkward or distracting. The glossaries seem incomplete and a bit arbitrary. While these books contain the same basic information found in comparable biographies, their concise, attractive format and crisp writing give them a substantial edge. This is engaging nonfiction that students might first pick up to write a report and then end up reading cover to cover.-William McLoughlin, Brookside School, Worthington, OH
