West coast only........2006-05-18
This is for north-western hunters. Drawings are low quality. I wouldn't trust myself with just this book.
Read the notes below (I can't summarize this in a description).......2006-05-14
Most of the psilocybe literature (identification guides, etc) are written with a certain geographical position, meaning those guys over in the "Pacific Northwest" (Northern California, Wyoming, Washington State, Etc) - they are the ones who know a lot about finding and discussing the "Actives." This book is great. I take no issue with its subject matter. It is written with a clean, direct approach. Originally written in the seventies, it has become outdated in specific content matters. We as a human population are discovering "new" (newly identified) species almost every single year, sometimes multiple new species are discovered within a few months time. My point is this: This book covers only a small portion of the species out and about in American wood chip piles, lawns, and cow pastures. Bottom line: This book is a healthy addition to other books. There is no single volume out there that stands perfectly by itself. But its good. Worth the money, for sure.
Mushroom Magic.......2002-07-11
A well written and easy to understand book which clearly defines each type of mushroom with illustrations and photographs (in the appendix). It shows how to identify and distinguish between poisonous and hallucinogenic mushrooms (a vital skill). It also gives details on habitat. A useful reference guide. The only extra bit of advice I would give those thinking of ingesting hallucinogenic mushrooms is to always keep a sample in case something goes wrong so they can easily be identified. If in doubt don't pick. This book will certainly help reduces the confusion between similar looking psychotropic and poisonous mushrooms.
A great summarizing mushroom identification guide........1999-06-07
Easily identifies the genus of the mushroom to help identification in further examination. A great, pocket size manual to show which mushrooms are worth picking and which are better left alone. Used with another guide that features expanded species and photographs this book is a neccesity for hunting.

Not a carry along book.......2003-03-26
Best for background research before you go, the Insight guides are strong on giving a feel for the culture and people. For me, the short chapters on hunting, fishing and golf were not as interesting as the very good essays about how the Scottish church moulded the temperment of the people, and the bit about Scottish painters. A variety of topics like these are covered in the first 150 pages, the next 160 or so goes into the various locations, with a sense of the area combined with acutal landmarks, their description, location, hours of operation. The books are jammed full of photographs of decent quality. A different approach than the Eyewitness guides, worth looking at both before you go.
Not up to par.......1998-06-01
Better than Berlitz, but that's not saying much. Get Fodors or Rough Guide

Good resource!.......2007-05-19
This book is a good resource on Edinburgh, especially considering how few books there are on Edinburgh only. The photos are nice, and the book contains good, useful information! Definitely worth getting if you're planning a trip to Edinburgh!
Edinburgh: Picturesque Notes - 21st Century.......2007-04-16
When RLS journeyed from Glasgow to California in August, 1879, it took him 23 days (see pages 147-51: Selected Letters of Robert Louis Stevenson). When my husband and I journeyed from California to Edinburgh in 2004, it took us 25 hours. The comparison is interesting. I reflect on movement, time, space, distance - "the present sliding over the depth of the past" (see page 98: Moments of Being). That's what makes the journey interesting.
While much research, reading and preparation are involved in any successful "walking tour", the guide which we depended upon the most on our arrival at our destination was this Insight Guide to Edinburgh. For its size and weight (just under 300 pages) this guide can not be beat, containing clear and detailed information on hotels, restaurants, art museums, public parks and gardens, historic sites and buildings, and general travel tips. It is packed full of great color photographs and detailed maps. We were particularly happy with its complete yet concise coverage of this city's vast history and culture (2nd through 21st century), giving us a good introduction to its people and institutions. In the section entitled "Place", the city is broken down into its various environs: Old Town, 1st New Town, Greater New Town, Tenement Landscape, the Waters of Leith, etc. and ample history and background are provided on the development of these various areas of the City as well as detailed maps and tips on navigation. Some of the more evocative discoveries we made by way of this guide were the Waters of Leith Walkway, St. Bernard's Well, St. Cecilia's Hall (housing an extensive collection of early keyboard instruments - see: The Russell Collection and other early keyboard instruments in Saint Cecilia's Hall, Edinburgh; and page 58: The Edinburgh Visitor Guide) and the city's "Open Doors Day" which takes place during the last weekend in September and opens the doors to many public buildings for free exploration and adventure.
Again, while one source can not possibly provide the traveler with everything he/she may need or want to know about his/her destination, this guide is as complete and handy a source for on-the spot reference as one is likely to find.Edinburgh Picturesque Notes
Don't listen to that other reviewer.......2004-02-12
300 pages doesn't even BEGIN to cover Edinburgh. This is a place with a history that makes that of any US city look like an appendix. Stop moaning; if you don't want to learn about Edinburgh, buy a different book! Try a more general book on Scotland, for instance. What a ridiculous criticism to make. I lived in Edinburgh for a year and this book was superb in fleshing out details about the significance of different parts of the city, and in pointing out places that even many locals didn;t know about. It left me feeling like I could get a job as a tour guide. That's exactly what I want from a guidebook. If you don't, fair enough, but don't criticize the book for not being a good match for you.

Book Description
The gruesome story of the devastation of buffalo herds in the late nineteenth century has become uncomfortably familiar. A less familiar story, but a hopeful one for the future, is Ken Zontek’s account of Native peoples’ efforts to repopulate the Plains with a healthy, viable bison population. Interspersing scientific hypothesis with Native oral traditions and interviews, Buffalo Nation provides a brief history of bison and human interaction from the Paleolithic era to present preservation efforts.
Zontek’s history of bison restoration efforts is also a history of North American Native peoples’ pursuit of political and cultural autonomy, revealing how Native peoples’ ability to help the bison has fluctuated with their overall struggle. Beginning in the 1870s, Native North Americans established captive bison breeding programs despite the Wounded Knee Massacre and a massive onslaught on Native cultural and religious practices. These preservation efforts were so successful that a significant percentage of bison today carry the bloodlines of these original Native-sponsored herds. At the end of the twentieth century, more than fifty tribes banded together to form the Intertribal Bison Cooperative. This group has made significant progress in restoring bison herds in the United States, while Canadian First Nations work with national parks and other government entities to select and manage free-ranging herds.
Buffalo Nation offers insights into the ways that the Native North American effort to restore the buffalo nation inspires discourse in cultural perseverance, environmentalism, politics, regionalism, spirituality, and the very essence of human-animal interaction.

Buffalo Hunt by R. Freeman: A review.......2000-05-27
Author, Russell Freeman, writes an informational (nonfiction) book targeting grades 3 - 7 about the interdependence of the Plains Indian Tribes and the North American Bison. This book documents a way of life few non-Indian people were privileged to see. The bison shaped the culture of these tribes, the tribes usually killed only what they needed and used all parts of the animal. The various tribes of the plains husbanded the bison herds and the land on which they grazed to insure the survival of this essential source of food and shelter. The buffalo hunt was accompanied by supplication to the spirits and shaman of the tribes and was participated in by all, though only men killed buffalo. The job of others was to clean the kill and cure the meat and hides. The author describes more than one hunting technique. Also, he explains how the Indians developed into skillful horsemen as they evolved from hunting on foot to the use of wild horses.
The slaughter of bison populations as whites encroached upon and gradually took over Indian lands resulted in the end of a way of life and the near annihilation of the Plains Indian Tribes in the 50+ years from around 1830 to 1888.
The book is illustrated with reproductions of original paintings and drawings of the period by artists such as George Catlin and Karl Bodmer who were adventurer-artists traveling alone, or nearly so, through regions that only a few fur trappers and traders had seen before this time.
Freeman has crafted a book with a balanced combination of illustration and information. His book would surpass the most rigorous standards for great nonfiction. It presents information objectively and without bias or opinion and uses beautiful works of art for illustration - the art of both the white and the Indian, from the period under scrutiny. It explains a way of life that has been lost yet does not belabor the point, marginalize the people, or sentimentalize the topic. I would recommend this book highly. It could be used for art projects in schools as well as for factual writing assignments. The author has written other respected informational books for children, e.g., Lincoln: A photobiography, and another about the Wright brothers.
Book Description
DON COLDSMITH, voted one of the greatest western writers of the twentieth century by the Western Writers of America, single-handedly revolutionized the Western novel with his acclaimed Spanish Bit Saga. Set in the early sixteenth century, the Spanish Bit re-creates a time, a place, and a people that have been nearly lost to history. In it we see history through the eyes of those who lived it.
Owl's father changed the lives of the People by bringing the horse from his native Spain. Now Owl must make his own contribution by learning the way of the buffalo from an ancient medicine man and pursuing a vision quest. Embarking on a perilous journey through savage lands, Owl risks capture by the People's enemies, and wins the heart of a brave and beautiful woman, before winning honor among the People.

Buffalo Country TAKES you there!.......2007-10-04
Remember falling asleep in American History class? That's because "Buffalo Country" wasn't your textbook. If all you recall from Earth Science 101 is a box of nameless rocks on a shelf, Ed Raventon was NOT your teacher!
Ed tracks bison through the northern plains where I meet heroes and scoundrels among the traders, settlers, explorers and soldiers. I couldn't imagine the thunder of sound as thousands of buffalo lumbered through the Black Hills...but NOW I can!
The only way to improve on Mr. Raventon's book "Buffalo Country" is to make the trip to the northern plains yourself...and that's what I plan to do soon - on my motorcycle - with "Buffalo Country" in my saddlebag!
Product Description
The Magic Tree House whisk Jack and Annie and Teddy the dog back almost 200 years to the great plains. There they meet a Lakota boy who shows them how to hunt buffalo. But something goes wrong! Now they need to stop a thousand buffulo from stampeding!

Book Description
In the summer of 1994, the birth of a white buffalo calf in Wisconsin created a wave of excitement throughout Indian Country. The event inspired Dr. Robert Pickering to research the white buffalo's importance to Indian peoples, as well as its historical and biological significance. He journeyed to the family farm of Dave and Val Heider, where the calfaptly named Miraclewas born. He spoke with them about the astonishing flood of visitors who came to see Miracle, and about the uncanny accuracy of some Indian elders' prophecies.
With the Heiders' cooperation, he uses their poignant story as the starting point for his investigations. Pickering examines the history of the buffalo and the biological reasons for the white buffalo's rarity, and he shares his conversations with tribal elders and modern bison ranchers. "Seeing the White Buffalo" skillfully marries scientific and cultural perspectives in its exploration of the phenomena of this unusual animal.

Uncanny: The Art & Design of Shawn Wolfe
Shawn Wolfe
Manufacturer: Houston
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 096712851X |
Book Description
Uncanny is the first monograph of Shawn Wolfe's work. Best known as the man behind Beatkit, the ubiquitous "brand without a product", Wolfe was deconstructing consumerism and brand fetishism since before he knew that's what he was doing. From early days spent working in retail and cranking out handmade fanzines to a tour of duty in the trenches of the apparel industry to his current position as one of Seattle's most notorious fin de siecle artists, Wolfe has branded himself and his work with the style and wit of an artist who's spent the late 20th Century at cultural ground zero -the point of sale.
Collected here for the first time are Wolfe's forays into painting, design, illustration and comics spanning over a decade. The artist himself speaks to his experiences and influences; from childhood years spent in and around various family businesses to fateful brushes with MTV's "The Real World," Raygun magazine and Negativland to his situationist role as self-appointed "ambassador of panic" in Seattle's WTO riots.
Text by Rudy Vanderlans, David Carson and Eric Fredrickson. Additional text by Darick Chamberlin and Shawn Wolfe.
Customer Reviews:
Vividly Candid Snapshot of Eyeball Branding.......2000-05-28
Mr. Wolfe's ability to incentivize enterprise solutions sometimes makes you forget he's only trying to enable magnetic mindshare! When you first open the this dynamic branding tome, one can actually SMELL Wolfes ability to synergize sexy architectures by merely syndicating global vortals. Dot-com or B2B, it's all out the window! BK2000! Sheer frictionless niche! VIVA LA BEATKIT!
Grinding your teeth for your Art........2000-04-25
The raw, "reality art" technique of Wolfe is gritty to say the least. This book makes you really *feel* that grit. You can feel it rubbing against your insides like so much sand caught in your shorts at the beach.
It leaves you raw, red, but still wanting to be "out there" just a few minutes longer.
I suggest you pick this up. If you are in any way a fan of the "brutalis immaculos" movement, you will not be disappointed.
"Uncanny" is an understatement..........2000-04-23
I wish I could give it 6 stars! "Uncanny" is a disputed understatement of the visual encounter found herein. I couldn't believe my eyes--it was like staring into the sun. The candid witicms offset by the terse sense of jaded sarcasm were unnerving. "Panic now" indeed!
why not buy an SUV?.......2000-04-23
"Pass the gas 'doc'"
"What?"
The surgeon was startled. He was a little gassy. Greasy lunch. He's a doctor of sorts, he should know better. Anyhow, the bulk of it seemed not to have much of smell. He was spared that much.
"Oh. I see what you mean."
He lifted the mask to the patient's face. Though he was relieved that his own gasses weren't being detected, he was put off by the man's crassness toward such a touchy subject as medical drugs; especially those one could derive pleasure from.
The patient eased back. As he faded out the ride in the chair was smoothe and stable. He felt secure and safe, far away from harm. Four thousand pounds of glossy painted steel. A form fitting suit of armor. His body was a different shape now, but that didn't bother him.
uncanny.......2000-04-22
Refreshingly redundant like double aged French brie. Mr Wolfe certainly deserves two thumbs up for victory.
