          Book Description

Most information on yeasts derives from experiments with the conventional yeasts Saccaromyces cerevisiae and Schizossaccharomyces pombe, the complete nuclear and mitochondrial genome of which has also been sequenced. For all other non-conventional yeasts, investigations are in progress and the rapid development of molecular techniques has allowed an insight also into a variety of non-conventional yeasts.
In this bench manual, over 70 practical protocols using 15 different non-conventional yeast species and in addition several protocols of general use are described in detail. All of these experiments on the genetics, biochemistry and biotechnology of yeasts have been contributed by renowned laboratories and have been reproduced many times. The reliable protocols are thus ideally suited also for undergraduate and graduate practical courses.

4 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great.......2007-06-10

Having purchased Darwin Wiggett books before, I had a certain level of expectation. While this volume contains many *good* photos, overall it doesn't attain to the same height as Darwin Wiggett Photographs Canada. It also is not as well printed as Photographs Canada, which BTW, has a different publisher from Dances With Light (and apparently from all of his other books as well). Is DWL a nice coffee table book? Decidedly yes. But if you're looking for something really special, a true art book, try his Photographs Canada.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Photography at it's very best.......2006-07-26

Someone recommended "The Canadian Rockies" book by Douglas Leighton which I purchased. Then I saw the book "How to Photograph the Canadian Rockies" by Darwin Wiggett. After buying Darwin Wiggett's book, I ordered "Dances with Light." This book is quality at it's very best. It's 100% better than "The Candaian Rockies book" by Douglas Leighton. Buy Dances with Light and you'll be thrilled!

              5 out of 5 stars A great souvenier.......2005-06-08

This is the second of the books I have bought by this photgrapher. It's a great souvenier of a road trip I did last month in the area. It really makes you wish you were back in the Rockies again instead of on a damp and dreary island in the path of every rainstorm crossing the Atlantic.

The author clearly has intimate knowledge of the area and it's an example of what work can be done with a great set of a camera, lenses and filters. I don't think the author has used photoshop.

I'd also recommend his guide on photography in the Rockies if you are going there and want to have a try recreating or creating an alternative to some of his works.

                Book Description

The nature of Weimar's terminal crisis - how a politically liberal and culturally progressive society could succomb to fascism - remains one of the central historical questions of our century. In this major work, Detlev J.K. Peukert offers a stimulating interpretation that not only places Weimar in the history of twentieth-century Germany but also reveals it as an archetype of the ambivalences and pathologies of advanced industrial society.

                Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars scholarly to the point of unreadability.......2003-11-02

Unless you are doing graduate-level work on the Weimar era (which I am), stay far away from this book as an intro. It is not for the timid reader. I'm trying to get my hands on the original German edition, but whether it is the writing or the translation, Peukert's book reads as if it were authored by the illegitimate, illiterate love-child of James Joyce and Henry James. Contentwise, it has very little to do with the popular perception of "Weimar Culture;" for that, check out Peter Gay. This book deals primarily with social and economic conditions, and hardly ever mentions politics, and even more rarely, art. If you like charts and graphs and figures though, this is full of them. That said, this is the preeminent book on Weimar Germany. It helps to have a philosophy degree to read it, though. Anthony Heilbut's excellent Exiles in Paradise is more than worth checking out if you're interested in the mass emigration of German artists and intellectuals to the US.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, Precise and free of Jargon.......2001-05-30

I'm doing some research into the years immediately prior to WW2 and needed a good recap of Weimar for context. This book was superb for the purpose. Not long after starting it I concluded that I might as well save my yellow hi-lighter and simply dip the whole book in florescent yellow ink. There is hardly a page that is not a superbly concise rendering of an important point. Peukert, who died at age 39, was a star of German history of the 20th century, and this book, intended as both a primer and a summary, shows why. Excellent grasp and presentation of both statistics and economics. Few if any hacknied answers to banal questions, but rather a probing for new questions as well as new answers. A willingness to say "I don't know" when that is the proper thing to say. Peukert's intellectual honesty shines through, and all his traits inspire confidence. This book is not, however, a delightful read, being so thoroughly boiled-down to its essence. It contains very little in the way of flowing narrative, witty vignette, or deft portraiture -- mostly it sticks pretty close to what might, with a wink and a nod, be called the "objective facts" of Weimar. It is nonetheless well written, crammed with information, and free of jargon (this last point not to be taken for granted in academic writing of the 70s and 80s) -- and apparently well-translated. A very good job of what it sets out to do. That said, I got very little in the way of the "flavors" of Weimar from it, and now feel the need to read something else for that -- perhaps Doblin's "Berlin Alexanderplatz" will provide that.

5 out of 5 stars Crisis made clear.......2001-03-11

A masterly translation of a remarkable book! The radical shifts of Peukert's thought are lucidly rendered in an English as limpid as it is urgent.

5 out of 5 stars Why Hitler Happened.......2000-12-22

Detlev Peukert's analysis of Weimar Germany exceeds any other in breadth and readability. His book not only examines the experiment of Weimar democracy from social, economic, political, and cultural angles, but provides an interesting thesis for why Weimar democracy failed, namely that Weimar Germany epitomized the crisis of classical modernity. I have read many books on Weimar Germany, most of which focus on one particular aspect. Peukert synthesizes all of the most important aspects into one, offering a clear account of why Hitler happened.

                      Book Description

Dr. Theo Balderston explores the relevance of the politics of the Weimar Republic to its economic history. Tracing the origins, political fragility and eventual destruction of the unstable government in terms of the economic realities of interwar Germany, this book provides a comprehensive survey of sources otherwise inaccessible to students. Covering the Peace Treaty and reparations payments, the spiralling inflation of the twenties and the slump which led to the collapse of the republic, this is an indispensable guide to an extremely significant period in European economic history.

                      Book Description

This is the first scholarly biography of Heinrich BrÜning, chancellor of Germany from 1930 to 1932, and the last politican with a real chance to prevent the Nazi seizure of power. This book analyzes BrÜning's cabinet's economic and fiscal policies for coping with the Great Depression, the diplomatic campaign to redress Germany's grievances against the Treaty of Versailles, and his thoughtful strategy for creating a broad anti-fascist political coalition. Finally it seeks to explain why President Hindenburg and his reactionary advisers decided to topple BrÜning, with disastrous consequences.

I enjoyed reading Patch's book a lot due to the - in my opinion - very balanced description of Bruening within the collapsing Weimar Republic. It descripes very well the complex situation democratic politicians have been faced with at the end of the Weimar Republic. Bruening himself is evaluated regarding his politics under his regime of the "Notstandsverordnungen" by Patch in the context of his intentions and beliefs as well as in the context of tactical moves, he took to maintain power. Unfortunately, contemporary science especially in Germany focuses on specific politicians only and evaluate latter almost always in terms of their standing in relation to the successors in form of the NSDAP from an ideological point of view. Fortunately, Patch does not repeat this mistake. So Bruening, Patch explains clearly, was alienated within the dominant leftish emigrant group opposing the Nationalsocialist due to his somewhat ambivalent point of views. Patch examines correctly, that Bruening was in line with Stresemann, but less gifted, in finding a balance (even after the war) to follow an integrational international policy and failed finally also in his struggle with Adenauer in the 1950s.

                        Book Description

In 1919 the Prussian Ministry of Science, Arts and Culture opened a dossier on "Einstein's Theory of Relativity." It was rediscovered by the author in 1961 and is used in conjunction with numerous other subsequently identified 'Einstein' files as the basis of this fascinating book. In particular, the author carefully scrutinizes Einstein's FBI file from 1950-55 against mostly unpublished material from European including Soviet sources and presents hitherto unknown documentation on Einstein's alleged contacts with the German Communist Party and the Comintern. Siegfried Grundmann's thorough study of Einstein's participation on a committee of the League of Nations, based on archival research in Geneva, is also new. This book outlines Einstein's image in politics and German science policy. It covers the period from his appointment as a researcher in Berlin to his fight abroad against the "boycott of German science" after World War I and his struggle at home against attacks on "Jewish physics" of which he was made a prime target. An important gap in the literature on Einstein is thus filled, contributing much new material toward a better understanding of Einstein's so rigorous break with Germany.

                            Book Description

Most accounts of the Weimar Republic (formed in Germany at the end of World War I) begin in 1918 and end in 1933, when the Nazis took power. Rethinking the Weimar Republic extends the paramaters of the republic to the period from 1916 to 1936. This longer period allows for a better understanding of the genesis of the politics of the republican state, the crises it faced and how they were resolved.
