Considering what the book claims to cover, it is adequate. It has lots of pictures and brief descriptions of the eastern Sierras and the Owens Valley. Do not expect detailed descriptions of the natural history, geology, or history of this region.
Beautiful photographs.......2006-03-20
If you're a fisherman, hiker or just someone who appreciates magnificent scenery, then the Sierra Nevada mountain range is the place for you. This book is a rewarding introduction to the splendors of this region. From Lone Pine to Bridgeport, this book covers most of the treasures in this area, easily accessed from Highway 395.
I spend most of my summers in the Sierra Nevada and this book helps me pass the winter months in anticipation of hitting the trails again when the snow melts off. The photos make you feel as if you're there, they are high quality and beautifully reproduced. If you've never made a trip to this area, this book is the perfect introduction. If you're someone who knows the Sierra's like the back of your hand, it's still an excellent coffee table book.
I hope the authors tackle another photographic challenge: publish a book specifically on the magical John Muir Trail. The opportunities for great photos there are endless! In any case, this book is a welcome addition to anyone with an interest in one of the most scenic areas in America.

Primarily block-printed cotton, many of the textiles were exported to Egypt as part of the pre-European indian Ocean trade. Some date back to the eleventh century CE. It benefits both from recent carbon-dating of the material, and from the latest archaeological research. Though Romantic elements in stage design are often thought to have ended with the advent of the Victorian era, they in fact persisted into the second half of the nineteenth century. Romantic stages were used in the productions of many of the most prominent actor-managers of the period, including Madame Vestris, Charles Kean, Wilson Barrett, Henry Irving and Herbert Beerbohm Tree.

More Design Porn.......2006-06-22
This is a decent overview of what happened to magazine design when desktop publishing became mainstream in the '90s. Each of the book's five sections are preceded by a pretty decent 2-page introduction to the various elements (format, covers, pace, words, pictures) and are inset with a section highlighting particular magazines (Blow, Vanidad, 2wice, Speak, Econy). The lessons learned aren't particularly shocking: indie magazines have more flexibility of format, the excesses of Raygun designer David Carson led to a backlash of formalism, sometimes less is more, etc. The book is chock full of examples of covers and spreads (mostly from European fashion and style magazines), which is all very nice and most designers will find inspiration here and there. My own favorites are the vertical format of Spanish magazine In Juve and the covers of the magazine produced by British newspaper The Independent. However, like almost every design book about magazines, it's not particularly practical for the average designer (eg. the constraints imposed by advertising are glossed over), but serves more as design porn. And while it's kind of interesting to see how some designers push the envelope on format, examples like the $425 issue 24 of Visionaire are more alienating than inspiring. Finally, Leslie apparently thought it would be interesting or "designery" to run all the captions perpendicular to the the rest of the contents, forcing one to turn the book 90 degrees every spread. That's not interesting, it's just stupid and annoying.

I gave it a star for the cover. Inside, there is little to draw from and would make for another coffee table book soon to be recycled. Sorry, but thumbs down.

Being an avid reader of magazines for as long as i can remember, i found that this book was very informative on the reasons why they are so appealing: with many interesting examples of avant-garde magazine designs, or just simply intelligent concepts, this book is a must for any magazine addict. A great addition to my library!
