    Book Description

In the past few years rapid progress has been made regarding our understanding of one of the dominant phytoplankton groups of the world's oceans: the coccolithophores. Among other initiatives, the EU-funded TMR network CODENET (Coccolithophores Evolutionary Biodiversity and Ecology Network) has provided new results and insights. These and many other findings are reviewed and synthesized in a number of individual chapters which focus on coccolithophore biology (molecular to cellular), ecology (experimental and in the ocean), evolutionary phylogeny and its impact on current and past global changes. Coccolithophores are emerging as a prime model for interdisciplinary global change research due to their great abundance, wide distribution and exemplary geological record. The results presented in this book address the fundamental question of the interaction between the biota and the environment at various temporal and spatial scales.

      Book Description

Coccolithophores are one of the primary algal groups in the oceans. They are the focus of recent research in many disciplines because of their importance in paleoenvironmental reconstruction and stratigraphy. The book starts with a history of coccolithophore studies, followed by chapters discussing coccolithophore biology, and the composition, function, and classification of their skeletal elements. At the heart of the book are taxonomic and atlas chapters with 140 scanning electron micrographs of coccolithophore species. Through a series of contributions from key workers in the field, the reader can then follow the path of the organisms from the ocean surface, through the water column to the ocean floor and the addition to the sedimentary rock record. The book concludes with a chapter on geochemical tracers, and the implication of these studies for stratigraphy and paleoenvironmental change.

        Description:
A combined study of coccolith assemblages and biomarkers in a gravity core collected from the Ria de Vigo (NW Spain) allowed us to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions for the last 3000 years. The quantitative distribution of coccolithophore species points to three different intervals within the core, dated by AMS radiocarbon measurements. The first interval (ca. 975 BC-252 AD), characterized by high abundances of Calcidiscus leptoporus and Gephyrocapsa muellerae, is thought to represent moderate water temperatures, suggesting a transition from a warmer to a cooler period. The second interval (ca. 252-1368 AD), characterized by the dominance of Coccolithus pelagicus, Helicosphaera carteri and Syracosphaera spp., and a high concentration of hexacosanol linked to terrestrial input, is interpreted as having been a humid period with fluvial input. The third interval (ca. 1368 AD-1950) is characterized by a high abundance of Gephyrocapsa oceanica, high alkenone values and low values of hexacosanol, and is thought to represent a period dominated by oceanic conditions within the Ria. Taking into account the ocean-atmospheric system affecting the region studied, here we propose an alternation in the mean state of North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) at millennial time scales. A well-developed upwelling system and an active Ria-ocean connection during the warmer interval I suggest a NAO+ phase influenced by a Hypsithermal period. The occurrence of the humid and relatively warm interval II is consistent with a negative phase in the NAO, as well as a relative restriction in ocean-Ria exchange. Interval III, which was drier and more productive, again suggests the dominance of a positive phase in the NAO, with a more intense oceanic connection and more energized upwelling.

          Description:
The response of coccolithophore assemblages to short-term millennial and centennial climatic changes over the last 50 kyr is studied in core M39029-7 from the Gulf of Cadiz (Atlantic Ocean) and core MD95-2043 from the Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean Sea). The nannoplankton data are compared with oxygen isotopes, U"3"7^k^'-SST and other biogeochemical and sedimentological proxies to obtain a new perspective of the paleoceanography and paleoecology of the area during these short-term climatic changes. Coccolithophores indicate that Heinrich events (HE) were characterised by the presence of cold, low salinity and turbid water masses on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. High abundances of the Lower Photic Zone (LPZ) species Florisphaera profunda in the Gulf of Cadiz synchronous with HE are interpreted as being an evidence of upper water-column stratification on the Atlantic side. These episodes coincided with input of terrigenous material, especially during H2. Surface waters during Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) Stadials were also cold and turbid, while most of DO Interstadials were characterised by warm-water flora. The increase in small placoliths (small Gephyrocapsa and Emiliania huxleyi ( <4 @mm)) reveals a higher coccolithophore production during DO Interstadials and the Holocene. Conversely, HE and most of DO Stadials show peaks of E. huxleyi (>4 @mm), which is considered here as a cold-water indicator. The sharp decrease in large specimens of E. huxleyi related to the warming trend in the last deglaciation can be used as a biostratigraphic reference level that marks-at least approximately-the deglaciation and the beginning of the Holocene. Peaks of F. profunda are observed during Termination 1 (T1) in the Alboran Sea. They are isochronous with the ''Organic-Rich Layer 1'' recognised in the Western Mediterranean. In this interval, the water column of the region was stratified as a consequence of the global increase in the sea level following the deglaciation. Quantitative analyses of the coccolithophore assemblage allow us to interpret that coccolithophore production has been higher in the Alboran Sea than in the Gulf of Cadiz during the Holocene.

              5 out of 5 stars London.......2005-07-31

First, if you are considering a trip to London, I highly recommend it. London is my favorite (so far), and I just returned about a week ago as I write this, and I am already planning another trip.

I had used the Fodor's guide while visiting London. It was beneficial and enhanced the enjoyment of my trip.

Second, I would recommend, if you are visiting London, to purchase this book well in advance (if that is feasible) and plan your trip intelligently. I found so much to do in London, there are so many options, that I was not able to do everything that I would had liked to. I do not want that to happen to you! I am confident that the Fodor's guide will be beneficial for your trip if you are lucky enough to visit London.

              ---
Now, I would like to provide a list of a few must-see's in London
              ---

              ---
              Theatre
              ---
I had attended several plays and musicals while in London, however, I found the Globe Theatre to be the most entertaining. In fact, I attended two performances, Pericles and A Winter's Tale. It was great fun, and tickets can be purchased for as cheap as five pounds!

              ---
              Museums
              ---
So many it is difficult to really select one. I would recommend the British Museum, the British Library, Tate Modern, Churchill's Bunker (definitely do this, far exceeded my expectations), National Gallery, and National Portrait Gallery.

              ---
              Pubs
              ---
Black Friar. The Black Friar is my favorite pub in the world. The beer selection is excellent, the food is great, and the building and the design is wonderful. While I London, I believe I visited five times in a three week period.

              ---
              London Eye
              ---
A lot more fun than I anticipated! Excellent city views. Do not miss this, it is worth it!

              ---
              St. Paul's
              ---
I have visited the four famous basillicas in Rome, and I think St. Paul's might be my favorite Cathedral. The beauty of it and its history are extraordinary, and the views of the city are likewise extraordinary. I am certain you will not be disappointed if you visit St. Paul's. I would absolutely not miss this cathedral. Also, you should visit Southwark, which is not too far from the Globe Theatre.

The above are just a few of the many opportunities in London. I hope the above was helpful.

5 out of 5 stars You're going to LOVE BRITAIN! .......2004-09-24

              Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

              MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.

              Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!

              Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.

              Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.

              Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

              Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

                      Book Description

Publishers of contemporary magazines invest more and more money in developing innovative design for an increasingly design-literate reader. Innovation, however, must always be grounded in the underlying conventions of legibility to ensure loyal readership and economic success.

Digital Magazine Design provides detailed descriptions of all the necessary rules of design, and uses these rules to cast a critical eye over a selection of contemporary high-street magazines.

The second part of this volume, written by publishing students, demonstrates how the tools of design can be applied to the analysis and practice of contemporary magazine design.

Through an understanding of the relationship between text, image and design, and the ability to make informed judgements, the student is able to critically evaluate all publishable material.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Annoying.......2004-09-06

When my copy of Digital Magazine Design arrived, I was rather excited. I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, as each page turned my hope gradually turned to disappointment and annoyance. By the time I was finished with the book, I was sorry I had wasted my money on it.

The book is divided into two sections. The first section is written by Honeywill and the second section is written by a number of graduate students. The early chapters of Honeywill's book seemed filled with what is more or less useless material for the designer. While it is perhaps interesting to talk about the icon standards used in modern software programs, there is no real value for the person interested in getting into digital layout. The information seems more geared toward the person who has never saddled up to a keyboard before. For the person who has spent a little time on a computer these chapters are virtually useless.

The following chapters are somewhat useful but a large part of the material is redundant to anyone that has any kind of graphic design training at all. It is very likely that the person picking up this book will have had at least a basic training in typography and graphic design, so when Honeywill states that serif texts are good for body copy, the reader is left thinking, "yeh but tell me something I do not know." To be fair there is useful material in Honeywill's chapters but not enough to where I would be happy about having purchased the book.

The second part of the book is dedicated to several case studies penned by graduate students. When one buys a book about Digital Magazine DESIGN, one would think that the book would be written by experienced designers. One would be wrong in this case. These graduate students are publishing graduate students. Granted, a publisher needs to have some basic graphic design knowledge, but when I buy a book about design, I want to be reading from people who ARE designers. This book would have been better named "Digital Magazine Design for Publishers."

What follows are often tedious and bland critiques of various magazines. We get a detailed description of the typographic choices that each magazine chose. We get very few illustrations of the magazine pages and when we do most of them are on the inner margin and placed to bleed into the binding. This not only makes it hard to really get a feel for the page layout due to size, but the reader is constantly having to flatten out the binding to be able to see the illustrations. In many cases even that does not help. When we are told that a certain design decision did not work well on page x of a magazine, we have no illustration to be able to judge if the writer's opinion is correct or not. When doing graphic design and typography critiques and instruction, illustrations are simply essential. We get far too few illustrations and most of what we do have is of little use due to size and placement on the page.

Another tiring element of the second half of the book is the uninspired writing of most of the essays and their insistence on quoting Honeywill, (i.e. Paul Honeywill says...). We know what Paul Honeywill says because we read it in the first half of the book. These quotes come off more like a grad student name-dropping their teacher in order to hopefully get a better grade, which it seems likely is the case, for these critiques bare the strong marks of theses. Added to that is their insistence on quoting the most basic of typographic and graphic design standards. One can forgive hearing that a serif typeface is best used for body copy once, perhaps twice, but when one hears it 7 times, it starts to get old. Most of the critiques make a point of quoting these most basic of principles. So along about the 3rd or 4th time, the reader begins to get annoyed.

The theses do not give the feeling of real critiques at all. In most cases their purpose seems to be more as a vehicle to show off the (basic) design knowledge of the (non-design) student by parroting their teacher, than to offer any real critique of the magazines.

Typographically the book itself fails as well. This is perhaps the most surprising thing about the book. One would think that a book by a graphic designer would be, well.......designed a little better. I have already mentioned what I feel was a major mistake in placing illustrations on the inside margins. This mistake was compounded by tilting some of the graphics which caused them to bleed further into the binding and making their value as examples to illustrate the text even less.

Another annoying aspect of the graphics lay in the photos that start off each thesis in the second section. At the beginning of each thesis is a photo of the cover of the magazine that is being critiqued. Normally this would be a very good move. Graphic design is a visual art, so having the actual cover of the magazine to view is a smart move. However, Honeywill (or whoever designed his book) chooses to apply a transparency gradient to the covers so that the entire bottom half of the cover is not there. You can only see the top half of the cover! When the cover of a magazine is one of the most important design elements in that magazine, it seems ludicrous to include a photo of the cover, only to knock half of it out with a gradient, just to add white space. Judicial use of white space is called for, but there are times when practical considerations must outweigh the need for more white space. This was definitely one of them.

Additionally the text is flush left and a very ragged right. There is absolutely no hyphenation. The net effect of this is that the raggedness of the columns is so extreme that it jars the reader out of the text at times. As an aside, one would think that a book that tells you several times that serif typefaces are best used for body copy, would have its own body copy in a serif typeface. One would be wrong again. The entire text is set in a sans serif typeface, making reading a bit of a task.

While the reader may get some valuable information out of this book, the amount of repetition, the general uninspired nature of it and the poor typographic choices makes a task out of what should have been a pleasure. Buy at your own risk. I plan to sell mine for anything I can get out of it.
