The Professional's Must Have.......2000-03-25
This book and it companion, the Dicotyledons, is THE professional's wetland plant identification book for the southeast. It is not a field guide but rather an office plant identification reference. It is not for the hobby naturalist unless they are prepared for the technical language and presentation. If you make your living identifying wetland plants in the southeast, you must have this book. Buy the Dicotyledons as well.

very handy.......2004-12-25
I consider myself beginner in spanish. The only sentence that I can confidently say is "Habla usted ingles?". I took this book and Oxford spanish dictionary to my eight day trip to Guadalajara, Mexico. This book became so handy that I left the Oxford dictionary in my hotel room.
Besides words and phases, it provide menu reader and other very useful information about Mexico. i.e. Under a word "phone", it describes how to use public phone in Mexico. I didn't realize most public phones only accept phone card and only the phone card from their company. I suggest buying Telmax phone card, since you can only find Telmax public phones.
This book is well worth the price.
Quite useful.......2004-11-18
The first time I went to Mexico I tried my Galician on the people and I did not get anywhere. They simply could not understand me. Recently I have been back and took this guide with me. It made a lot of difference. I managed to communicate and the Mexican people I talked to looked happy I spoke their language instead of trying to impose the language of Spain on them.
This guide covers all the expected areas, like food, shopping, accommodation, etc. It is very good, but more phrases would be even more helpful. Then you could use the vocabulary lists in more combinations and enlarge what you can say. Perhaps there will be an extended edition with more of it. I will buy it too!
Worth the Price.......2004-09-07
Though I would not suggust a nonspaniish speaker to enter Mexico with only this limited dictionary, it is a great suppliment. It has very useful words that are common in Mexico plus some great slang. It also has little bits of info next to certain words to aid in its correct usage. I spent an extensive amount of time in Mexico and got this little book's worth many times over.
Outstanding!.......2000-06-26
I bought this book in conjunction with Barron's Law Enforcement Spanish kit. "Mexican Spanish - The Rough Guide" is an outstanding pocket reference! I learned to conjugate verbs very easily given the simple description in the Rough Guide. I particularly like the contextual listings for words in the dictionary section. Very useful! I have several other Spanish books and dictionaries, and they are gathering dust now. I highly recommend this book.
A great (and very portable) aid to Mexican Spanish.......2000-01-21
On my first extensive trip through Mexico, I found this book (along with "The People's Guide to Mexico") to be far more useful than any regular Spanish (meaning, almost always, Castillian) dictionary. In fact, I found it to be much more relevant than the Rough Guide to Mexico! My only regret is that the book isn't longer. It's actually a lot of fun to read. I especially appreciated that it includes many conversational phrases, not just single words. Considering that like English, Spanish isn't particularly literal as spoken actually spoken, books like this are a must for those of us still learning that beautiful language. More to the point, guides to Mexican Spanish are in unduly short supply. This one's a boon and a bargain.

useful and compact.......2005-08-02
on my recent trip to italy, this book proved invaluable as traveling through smaller villages where other languages were not commonly spoke as in larger cities. there is great coverage of the basics of the language and easy to say phonetic phrases. i loved the small size of the book and could easily fit it in my handbag. great for eating out too as there is a section dedicated to cuisine and drink.
Very user friendly.......2004-03-14
We had this book and Barron's Italian Visual Language Guide on our holiday in Italy.
This one was much easier to use. The dictionary format made it so easy to find the right phrase. Our other book was set up in the more traditional 'at the hotel' sections and there would be 20 pages to look through to find an appropriate phrase.
With the rough guide you look up time and there is a selection of phrases around the idea.
Great book!
Great format.......2000-03-24
I already know some French and Spanish, but knew no Italian. I found this book tremendously helpful, much more so than either a phrase book or a dictionary by themselves, or in combination. You will probably also need a dictionary by the way for the words that aren't in this book as it is small enough to easily fit in your pocket.

Culinary Excellence That is Truly Authentic .......2007-01-10
Great recipes...I orignally bought a copy of this book in 1994 and have tried virtually every recipe in the book. I subsequently purchased a copy in 2006 as a gift for a family member. I asked my family to consider a new tradition in 2006; replacing the standard Christmas dinner with a "Native Harvest" the outcome was brilliant. Consequently my entire family agreed to embrace this concept and pass it along to the children. We found inspiration in the recipes from this truly amazing cook book and an opportunity to honor our ancesters and Native American culture as a whole.
some good food.......2006-11-10
i loved the book it gives you many different ideas to make things out of the ordinary
Easy Recipes, Beautiful Photographs.......2002-01-05
This is a "must have" cookbook if you'd like to prepare authentic Native American food. The ingredients are easy to find in any well stocked grocery store, and the recipes are not difficult. No "weird" ethnic foods here- just good meals made with what's available. The historical background for the foods of different tribes is an interesting read. The photographs and drawings are absolutely beautiful- those alone are good reasons to purchase this book!
BEST American cookbook yet!.......1999-08-02
The photography is unbelievable and the recipes work! The book gives us a palatable way to enjoy the true native american way of cooking. I would highly reccomend this book to everyone that loves to experience the enjoyment of cooking new recepies and the even greater enjoyment of eating what they have re-created. A great book for all ages and ethnic backrounds. Good food and lots of it!
A great marriage of Native American history and recipes........1998-12-03
The explanations of the ceremonies when certain dishes were prepared and eaten gave insights into how Native Americans lived and celebrated life. I was surprised how much history was involved in the dishes I grew up eating and had assumed were of early American or European origin. History books never mention that our early indigenous people were gourmands.

Excellent reference & delightful, usable guide book!.......1999-09-02
NATIVE HARVESTS is a popular work of ethnobotany! Well-illustrated with pen & ink botanicals by the author, this little book has become a leading guide book & teaching text - used in high schools, colleges, environmental & national parks centers, & on Indian reservations. Fortunately is has been expanded by the author in a new "20th birthday edition" now available as Native Harvests: American Indian Wild Foods & Mushrooms, published in November 1998 by the Institute for American Indian Studies in Washington, CT (250-pages) 860-868-0518. Color folio included! Outstanding!

EXCEPTIONAL CLASSIC !!!.......2005-12-26
This new edition of NATIVE HARVESTS is the most robust treatment with an especially beautiful new cover! More photographs and drawings adorn this fine Dover edition. What a great classic! This book has educated a whole generation fo wilf foods foragers, and folks intrigued with Native American fare. This new edition holds more "gifts" of native quotes, spirituality, stories, and suggested menus. I am so grateful for this excellent new book, which takes its place among each of the previous versions in my collections. Each is well-used, well-read, and abundantly travelled!

Case histories of an ethnic tragedy...........2000-07-19
Rather than a comprehensive book about modern guatemala or a human rights thesis this is an anthropological study of violence.
There are 10 different case histories all written by different people who are among the top guatemalan scholars. In these case histories is information and analysis that isn't available in most books and it covers some areas of the country not always touched on by scholars. The whole thing is held together by an exellent 35 page introduction and a final chapter of conclusion with a wonderful chronology of events. Over all an exellent book for serious students but maybe not for beginners.
This is a study about the mayan people that provides exellent incites from the perspective of social anthropologists and ethnographers as opposed to activists or journalists. The contributors have spent enormous amounts of time with their subjects and know them well.

Respectful, clearly written book.......2001-05-16
A missing piece of the Native American literature. So many stories are about the removal, or the myths. But how did the Cherokee actually live? What did they eat? What kind of games did they play? This book expertly deals with these everyday issues.
It is a clearly written book with bright, graceful illustrations. I enjoyed reading it to my daughters several times. And now they are older they enjoy learning Cherokee words.
An excellent book...and one every librarian should consider having.
Lost in my history!.......2000-01-05
I was astonished to read of something that pertained to my family history. I am so amazed by Daniel Pennington's writing's. He made me feel like I was there watching this in real life. This will be a great tool to teach my children about my heritage.

In B.G. Hennessy's simple, rhythmic picture book, children witness daily life in the Plymouth colony and the village of their Wampanoag neighbors. Author's and illustrator's notes provide background for B. G. Hennessy's read-aloud text and Lynne Cravath's engaging illustrations, making this a delightful way to learn history.
Customer Reviews:
Adorable!.......2006-11-12
One Little, Two Little, Three Little Pilgrims is a delightful children's book for the very young. B.G. Hennessy's writing is clear-cut, and doesn't overreach, as many Thanksgiving books have a tendency to do. There is no mention of death, or the hardships the pilgrims endured. This is a pleasant story recommended to the 3 to 8 crowd, but I say children 2 to 5 are more likely to appreciate it. The illustrations are equally delightful, and bursting with color. The text is rhythmic, and entertaining. If you don't mind singing the Thanksgiving version in the shower, or when drifting off to sleep, then check it out. It's an addictive read, but very effective, and worth a look.
Wonderful adaptation of an old song for the P.C. crowd........1999-11-19
This book is a wonderful story for the preschool crowd. It is sung to the old Ten Little Indians, but is a little more multicultural. It shows(with very cute illustrations) the Pilgrim & Wampanoag Indian children ina positive yet accurate light, and also depicts the different foods that were eaten at the first thanksgiving.

Book Description
Nearly four hundred years old, this unique classic of Southwestern American history is now available in a modern translation to a wide reading public. Fray Alonso de Benavides, a Portuguese Franciscan and third head of the mission churches of New Mexico, published this highly engaging book in 1630 as his official report to the king of Spain.
In 1625, Father Benavides and his party traveled north from Mexico City via creaking oxcart and muleback to reach the mission fields of New Mexico. A keen observer, Benavides described New Mexico as a strange land of frozen rivers, Indian citadels, and elusive mines full of silver and garnets. Benavides and his Franciscan brothers built schools, erected churches, engineered peace treaties, gazed in awe at endless miles of buffalo grazing placidly on the Great Plains, and were said to perform miracles.
The most thorough and riveting account ever written of Southwestern life in the early seventeen century, A Harvest of Reluctant Souls is at once medieval and a tale of the Renaissancea portrait of the Pueblos, the Apaches, and the Navajos at a time of fundamental change in their lives.

Maybe, the best web/multimedia design compilation........1998-07-14
Few books shows as mutch good taste in their selection. Graphicly objetive It's not married with any astethic trend. Doesn't intent to teach the inside of new medias, just what can be done with them.
A Must-Have Reference For Leading-Edge Designers.......1997-02-15
This book will blow you away! From the beginning, it presents three very different introductions about New Media. Without having gone any further than the intros, the reader is hooked. The descriptions of New Media as it exists today are thought-provoking to say the least.
Once inside, there is very little confusion. The organization, supported by very intuitive diagrams, leads the reader from start to finish on actual projects. This is probably the best inspirational resource for anyone involved in charting, designing or developing interactive productions.
As a current Interface Designer in New Media, I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a desire to further their design abilities in this rapidly growing and exciting medium.
Very Good reference for publishers, designers and webmasters.......1997-02-07
It's a complete refrence about planing, production, and implementing new media, such CD-ROMs, WebSites and other
forms from tradicional designs.
The examples are rich and explore many diferent steps of projects.
