    1 out of 5 stars Unusable .......2007-06-03

I ordered this book in preparation for my own trip to Colorado & Wyoming because I love my Peterson's Guide for Wildflowers for the Eastern US. This was a horrible disappointment. The flowers are organized by botanical families and species, instead of the usual organization by color and appearance. The key in the back is supposed to be organized by pairs of questions, but the numbering system is confusing beyond use and whoever put it together apparently doesn't know how to indent. I hope to prevent someone else from wasting their money on this book.

    4 out of 5 stars A botanical travelling companion.......2007-03-18

The photography is excellent. The line drawings are even more detailed. The descriptions are very useful. The interesting facts are often fascinating. I expect to field test this guide in July when I visit Alaska and British Columbia this summer. That will be the real test.

        Book Description

The alpine and forest terrain of the Southern Rockies region, from southern Wyoming to northern New Mexico, including Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, is a popular destination for wildflower viewing. High-quality color photographs and descriptions written for non-botanists make this an easy-to-use field guide.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best wildflower guide I've seen!.......1999-06-16

This is a great guide-the color photos are sharp and clear, the writing is to-the-point and very descriptive and helpful. There is also a section that defines terminology, which is useful to those of us who don't already know everything there is to know about wildflowers but are simply interested in knowing what kind of flower we saw! This book makes identification of a flower easy and certain, instead of wondering which of two (or more) it might be, as I've often found with other guides.

          3 out of 5 stars Botanist's Little Helper.......2007-03-18

This is a pocket guide for the enthusiast. Some prior knowledge of the terms used would be useful but it does what it says on the cover. I wish that I had found it before my last two trips to the Rocky Mountains but I will be taking it to Alaska this summer and hope that it helps there too.

5 out of 5 stars great for identifying unknown wildflowers during your hike.......2004-04-06

Of all the wildflower books I've seen, this one does the best job at helping you identify your unknown flower. This book uses a decision tree that guides you to the flower by answering questions about the flower's characteristics. e.g. if flower has regular shape go to p. 12, if irregular go to p. 15. Next, if flower has basal leaves, go to p. 20, etc. The book has an explanation and drawings of the terms used for identification. It has line drawings and written descriptions of the flowers. It is small and easily fits in your pocket for a hike.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent flower book.......1999-10-30

My family has always been very nature oriented, which may explain why I have become the owner of several of the "finders" books. Since moving to Colorado, I have watched for flower books and been disappointed in two I purchased. This book is exactly what I was looking for. At a picnic in the mountain woods, a guest brought a strange stalk in from a hike. It was covered with little pumpkin-shaped pods. Finding Pine Drops in this wonderful pocket-sized book sold it to me on the spot. When I went back to the same location the next year, I looked for the plant but didn't find it. Now I know I should not have been looking for a green plant, but one without chlorophyll. Aren't plants fascinating!

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, Compact Guidebook - Worth the Higher Cost.......2003-08-23

Over a period of six days we hiked 41 miles on Teton trails across open stretches in Jackson Hole and through dark forests and over high mountain passes. Everywhere we saw wildflowers - not the same wildflowers, but a changing mix reflecting differences in microclimate, especially as we climbed above the tree line.

Fortunately, my wife was well-prepared and carried a copy of A Field Guide to Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains, an excellent guidebook with full-color photos of 300 species of wildflowers scattered throughout the Rocky Mountains of North America. Only rarely did we encounter flowers that posed identification problems. (Useful hint: stopping to examine a particular wildflower is a perfect excuse for an unscheduled, but desperately needed rest break, especially at the higher elevations.)

Many guidebooks group the color photos together; the descriptive text is elsewhere and the reader is continually paging back and forth. The arrangement in Carl Schreier's field guide is especially useful for the hiker: the text and photo are on the same page making it possible to look at the wildflower, find the photo, and even read the text while continuing to move along the trail.

Ink drawings of each plant accompany the color photos to make identification easier. The relatively short overview (about 15 pages) highlights key anatomical features that help differentiate individual families and species of wildflowers. The detailed glossary of technical terms is quite helpful.

Schreier's guidebook (second edition, 2002) is widely available on the internet. Like many field guides, it is fairly expensive; used copies (1996 edition) can also be purchased.

In previous years we used guidebooks authored by Richard J. Shaw (Wildflowers of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks - ISBN 0-937512-05-2, and Plants of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks - ISBN 0-937512-02-8. They contain substantially fewer photos, but are less expensive.

A field guide to the Rockies' exquisite wildflowers.

The Rocky Mountains are natural botanical gardens of enormous diversity and interest. Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains is a user-friendly field guide that features wildflowers from one end of the mountain chain to the other-from northern British Columbia to New Mexico.

Each detailed description of the 350 species of plants has a full-color photograph for easy identification. Plants are grouped into six sections, according to flower color: white; yellow and cream; green; pink; red, orange, and brown; and purple and blue. Included are all the most common species likely to be encountered along the roadsides and hiking trails in the Rockies. Also featured are some rare and shy beauties found in more remote areas.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent pictures, very helpful, but WRONG phone numbers!.......1999-06-30

My fiancee and I have purchased and used many different books that have places to get married in the bay area. The thing that this book had over all the others is that a picture is worth a 1000 words. You can look at the picture, and instantly determine if it is the right decor for your wedding. This book provides a great description of the place in flowery grandiose language, but lacks on the details needed to choose the site. That would be fine, because you can always call the provided phone number to get that info, right? Not in this case. Of the ten places I decided to call this morning, only one phone number was correct! So, now I have to hunt for the phone numbers, which will be difficult for the places like the Rose Garden in Golden Gate Park, do I call the City's Parks and Recreation?

4 out of 5 stars Nothing like pictures..........1999-06-02

The best thing about this book is that it has actual photos of the locations. It's much easier to make a judgment based on this than just words or a hand drawing, as in some cases. The descriptions were pretty accurate as well.

5 out of 5 stars Serves as a guide and also an excellent pictorialtravelogue.......1999-01-18
