Book Description

Two genuine classics of natural history, "A Natural History of Western Trees" and its eastern counterpart, "A Natural History of Trees of Eastern and Central North America", are the most eloquent, informative, and entertaining books ever written about trees of North America. Each volume covers all of the native American trees of its region. After a succinct, nontechnical description of each species--its leaves, flowers, fruit, bark, wood, geographic range--Donald Culross Peattie focuses, in a essay of one hundred to several thousand words, on the relations between tree and people over the course of American history. These essays, unique in style and viewpoint, contain an incomparable richness of natural history.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy companion to "Eastern Trees".......2000-06-17

In the same grand style as in his "A Natural History of Trees of Eastern and Central North America" the writer continues with unsurpassed stories on trees, in this case the trees of Western North America, where the greatest living trees on the world can be found. What can I add to this? [see also my review on "Eastern Trees"]

It is a great pity Donald Culross Peattie was unable to follow through on his plan for a volume on Southern Trees. [For a few brief notes on the life and the untimely death of the writer see the afterword by his son Noel in the 1991 Indiana University Press reprint of "Flowering Earth"]

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for your nature walks through unfamiliar territory.......2007-04-20

This book is an excellent reference book for the nature lover who isn't up to speed regarding the particulars. For each tree, there is a blowup photo of the leaves, a smaller one of the bark and a black and white sketch of the general appearance of the tree from a distance. There is also the English and scientific names and some textual explanation of the tree. This explanation is a paragraph description of the appearance, a paragraph on how to identify it and one sentence descriptions of the habitat and geographical range where it is found.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction for kids.......2006-11-11

Ok, this isn't the full blown Audubon Tree book(s), but at this price, what do you expect?

This and all the Pocket Guides are great stocking stuffers for kids, especially for those blessed with parents who think getting the latest Gameboy or Hero Clix is more important (hint hint, you know who you are).

As they get older, their interests will become more defined and you'll know what (more expensive/extensive) particular field guide(s) to buy them.

Yeah, it's cliche, but a child's mind *is* a terrible thing to waste.

I've bought all the Audubon Pocket guides more than once (kept a few for myself, yes they're that good) and I've only been disappointed with one (most of the photos were blurry). No, I won't say which one, as it may not matter to someone else (but I'm picky about that kind of stuff).

Hand them out to your nieces and nephews, and any other kid that can't tell an oak from a pine tree or quartz from slate or Pleiades from Orion or ... well, you get the picture.

They've thanked me later on(and actually meant it, lol) and they'll thank you too.

5 out of 5 stars Small enough to use while backpacking.......2006-08-30

I like these small Audubon books because they are light and easy to use. The pictures are clear and the information is easy to read and use. They aren't as detailed as the bigger Audubon books, but then the larger ones are heavier and in a back pack, being light weight is everything.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2001-07-11

Bought this book to take on walks/hikes. The first time out I could not find anything on two out of the first four trees of which I was not familiar!! Very limited coverage of any trees other than those we all know from everyday experience---rather a disappointment!!

4 out of 5 stars A Handy Informative Guide for Trees.......2000-03-29

I bought this book because I was tired of only being able to identify a handful of the most distinctive trees. This small, colorful and easy-to-use guide was a godsend. It it paperback and can easily fit into a breast pocket, yet the full-page color photos of leaf shapes and sizes are adequate - even for a novice like me - to identify trees. It shows tree silhouettes, bark types and leaves and explains about various tree families to help us all be able to distinguish the trees from the proverbial forest! The information, organization and size of this book make it a "strong-buy" for anyone with an interest in "knowing" trees better!

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful resource........2004-10-20

This book is probably one of the best deals that you'll find if you're looking for a nature guide for the Western Forests area. It features the typical Audobon Society photos for easy identification, with a great deal of information. The best part is that plants, mammals, and birds are all combined into one book, so you don't have to buy separate guides. If you're taking a trip to the West Coast, buy this guide along with Bayard MCConnaughey's "Pacific Coast" (in the same Audobon series), and you're set.

5 out of 5 stars so good it is worth carrying in your backpack.......1998-12-16

this guide, as well as the others in this series, are an excellent first book or primary reference for those living or travelling in the areas they cover.

one of best points is that they are not exhaustive in their coverage. instead they focus on the most commonly seen species. so instead of flipping through endless pages of references to rare or seldom seen species, one can quickly find the specific plant or animal they encounter.

if one becomes more focused in study of a given type of plant or animal one can turn to more exhaustive and detailed texts -- such as audobon's own guides to birds, trees, mammals, etc.

i have found that this series is an excellent gift for those who are not specifically focused on nature studies. my parents enjoyed their gift copy -- as it enabled them to identify the trees and animals in their own back yard.

the specific entries are informative and interesting. the production values (photos, indexes) are excellent. and the opening essays are a special treat; they well written and well worth reading. they can inspire one to pay a bit more attention to the natural landscape even if all they do is drive through it.

      Book Description

The first modern history of Scottish woodlands, this highly illustrated volume explores the changing relationship between trees and people from the time of Scotland's first settlement, focusing on the period 1500 to 1920. Drawing on work in natural science, geography and history, as well as on the authors' own research, it presents an accessible and readable account that balances social, economic and environmental factors.

Two opening chapters describe the early history of the woodlands. The book is then divided into chapters that consider traditional uses and management, the impact of outsiders on the pine woods and the oakwoods in the first phase of exploitation, and the effect of industrialization. Separate chapters are devoted to case studies of management at Strathcarron, Glenorchy, Rothiemurchus, and on Skye.

          Book Description

More than a field guide, Mountain Wildflowers of the Southern Rockies offers cultural and botanical essays that present useful and fascinating facts about seventy-five species of wildflowers, including strategies for survival, plant evolution, origins of common and scientific plant names, family characteristics, and their roles in human history.

The Laramie and Medicine Bow Mountains of southern Wyoming, the principal ranges in Colorado, and the Sangre de Cristo, Jemez, and Sandia Mountains in New Mexico are home to over a thousand species of wildflowers. The striking samples included here were selected not only because they are characteristic of this region, but also because they have interesting stories to tell. Grouped by family and arranged in natural order, each featured profile is accompanied by a color photo and most include a drawing by wildflower artist Walter Graf.

For both visitors and natural history buffs, this book includes seventy-five examples of some of the most common and conspicuous wildflowers in the Rocky Mountains from southern Wyoming to New Mexico.

To eat and drink in Italy is to be thrust - head reeling, heart pumping and mouth watering - into the heart of Italian life. 2 out of 5 stars Plain.......2007-06-11

This is a pocket sized - well presented book. it contains many pictures, but when I had read it through, and browsed it a couple of times, I realized the images were nondescriptive and anonymous. I realized that I already knew 95% of the stuff - The book presents the basic stereotypical italian food (pretty well) - Pizza, and Pasta are highlighted, unfortunately I believe these dishes are over-represented when speaking about italian cuisine. The thing I thought I'd find most helpful was the dictionary on culinary terms in the end of the book. But at the restaurants I visited, I still managed to communicate sufficiently in english to understand what the food contained and what I'd like to order, still I was aided a couple of times by being able to look up a word. If you are completely unaware about italian cooking and will be visiting italy - then you may find the book helpful and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Italian food described.......2006-07-04

I own the LP world food Hong Kong and it was so useful that I decided to purchase the Italian version. Even though I know quite a bit about Italian food, it was nice to read the background material and have information about customs. Further the book includes a listing of gelato flavors (essential) and a food glossary in the back. Although not quite as useful as the one for Hong Kong, it was still important to know what foods are particular specialties to what area - even if specific restaurants are not listed.

5 out of 5 stars Food for daydreams.......2001-04-18

This small, hand-sized guide is packed with information about Italy and its food. There are useful maps, glossy color pictures and page after page of useful information about Italian cuisine, Italian food staples and specialties and drinks.

Plus, there are sections about Italian home cooking, regional food specialties and food celebrations, as well as tips about food shopping, and places to eat and drink.

There is even a 72-page guide to Italian food language.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate foodie travel guide.......2000-05-10

This book is a gem. Lonely Planet has some of the best, behind the scenes, adventurous and independent minded travel guides....."World Food, Italy" never strays from this focus. Better yet, it for the true food loving traveler. It doesn't provide tips on the hottest restaurants to visit in this vast dining paradise, but instead gives insight into Italian culture through food and describes each region by their food, letting you know, region by region, what delicacies just can't be missed. Excellent!

Leon Fink brings together primary and secondary sources that all but force the reader to determine the actual goings on for himself. There is distinctly absent an editorial interpretation of events or topics covered in this work, which makes it an absolute necessity for future history text writers at the primary or secondary level. They may take an important lesson from the structure and function of this book, that being that students need to see and read things for themselves in order to form a relative and informed opinion about such events. Imagine students at the high school and university levels still believing that Columbus discovered America or George Washington chopped down a cherry tree. Fink's editorial style provides much evidence of the way things ought to be. Fink does not interfere or contradict any of the primary source documents he includes here, therefore the reader will not detect any personal or political bias.

The topics covered in this book range from 1875 and the Gilded Age to 1920 and the aftermath of World War I. A wide range of authors are included and various aspects of history, from poetry to stump speech are considered equal. Primary source documents, such as speeches given by big business proponents or political activists are supplemented by lengthier secondary source materials written by university scholars such as Arthur Link and David Kennedy among many others. In this format, students are able to distinguish between what we say happened and what really happened according to documented facts. Thus, students are able to sharpen critical reading and critical thinking skills exponentially by the end of this work. Naturally, the documents themselves will have a personal or political bias, as authors generally exhibit such, but the student's task will be to uncover evidence of such bias while simultaneously extruding facts.

This book acts as a perfect follow up to a general American history survey, perhaps even as the required text for a sectional history course having something to do with the Gilded Age and/or Progressive Era. I wholeheartedly recommend the entire Major Problems series as they all allow a reader to perform his job task correctly: read and think critically about the topic at hand.

                  Book Description

When many Americans think of the Gilded Age, they picture the mansions at Newport, Rhode Island, or the tenements of New York City. Indeed, the late 19th century was a period of extreme poverty thinly veiled by fabulous wealth. However, we should not remember the era only for the strides made by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie or social reformer Jane Addams. All Americans had to adjust to the dynamic social and economic changes of the Gilded Age--the booming industries, growing cities, increased ethnic and cultural diversity. African American W. E. B. Du Bois, Native American Sitting Bull, and Chinese American Saum Song Bo spoke out against racial injustice. European immigrants Mary Antin and Robert Ferrari suffered the pitfalls and praised the opportunities found in their new country. Pioneer Phoebe Judson lamented the loneliness of making a life out West. And workers at Homestead Steel lost their lives in an attempt to improve labor conditions. Drawing from the letters, memoirs, newspaper articles, journals, and speeches of Gilded Age Americans, author Janette Greenwood arranges all of these voices to tell a story more vibrant and textured than the simple tale of robber baron versus starving poor. In addition to these voices, visuals--such as advertisements, maps, political cartoons, and a picture essay on Jacob Riiss urban photographs--create a kaleidoscopic view of the quarter century when diverse Americans struggled for the same goal: a better way of life, with more justice and democracy for each and all. PAGES FROM HISTORY General Editors: Sarah Deutsch, University of Arizona, Carol Karlsen, University of Michigan, Robert G. Moeller, University of California, Irvine, and Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom, Indiana University, Bloomington Textbooks may interpret history, but the books in the Pages from History series are history. Each title, compiled and edited by a prominent historian, is a collection of primary sources relating to a particular topic of historical significance. Documentary evidence including news articles, government documents, memoirs, letters, diaries, fiction, photographs, and facsimiles allows history to speak for itself and turns every reader into a historian. Headnotes, extended captions, sidebars, and introductory essays provide the essential context that frames the documents. All the books are amply illustrated and each includes a documentary picture essay, chronology, further reading, source notes, and index.

I was looking for such a book for a long time. They are hard to get here in Europe. This book gives an overview what one can expect from today's computer art. Some of the examples are a bit older, but nevertheless you'll get a nice impression of various styles and techniques. A brief comment on each published work tells you the method and tools the artist used to create this work.

The second edition in Rita Street's popular series that highlights the best of commercial, student, and industrial animation is an inspiring collection of contemporary computer animation. Although the vast majority of content in The Best New Animation Design 2 is computer-generated 3-D animation, there is also a sprinkling of traditional cartoon-looking work, and even some motion graphics pieces.

Divided into various sections covering commercials, films, television, games, and student work, this glossy, lavishly illustrated book features work of all kinds and styles. Especially handy is a directory listing of studios, complete with street addresses (but not e-mail addresses or URLs).

Most of the people involved in any one production are acknowledged, with the names of the producing studio, the client or agency, the main directors and producers, and the software that was used listed individually. The majority of spots feature a paragraph or two that outline the process that was involved or the new technique that was developed for the spot.

The only problem is that there is no actual way to see the animation. An accompanying CD-ROM containing QuickTime versions of the clips--or, better yet, a DVD--would have made this magnificent gallery book educational, too. --Mike Caputo

Descriptions of how images are created demonstrates matter of factly that its not the meat of the machinery or the software tool but the artist in motion that makes an exceptional animation.
