Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-04-11
I had a hard time finding a complete dive book for St.Croix--most of them focus on the other U.S. Virgin Islands. This is a complete map of all of the dive sites and on land ammenities.
Five Sea Stars.......2006-07-26
Thoroughly researched and thoughtfully constructed, this book offers something for everyone interested in exploring the amazing underwater landscapes of the USVI. Beginning divers and snorkelers will appreciate the overview of practicalities about how to get there, various underwater options, and other things to do when your extremities start to get pruney from all that time in the water.
More expert divers and those already familiar with the area can flip right to the heart of the book and delve into the descriptions of the many dive/snorkel sites. On our recent trip we stuck entirely with St. John, and I heartily agree with the author's assessment that Leinster Bay is one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. We can't wait to go back.
My only recommendation for the 2nd edition of the book would be to include even more sites accessible from shore for those spur-of-the-moment snorkeling expeditions.
We will definitely be bringing this book along on our next trip to the USVI!
Grateful author responds ..........2005-08-30
Thanks to those of you who have already purchased a copy of Diving & Snorkeling U.S. Virgin Islands! I'm glad most of you are pleased with the book, and I truly appreciate your feedback. Your suggestions will help me improve the next edition of the book. Keep your comments coming!
Shark Man, I am sorry the book didn't meet your expectations, but I would like to clarify something about coverage given to snorkeling sites.
While the snorkeling sidebar does list just names of popular snorkeling sites (favorites of mine and many other Virgin Islanders), the 53 extended dive site descriptions include several that are also excellent snorkeling sites. These are listed in the book index under "Snorkeling Sites" and identified with a snorkeling icon in the site descriptions.
As you were on a snorkeling trip, I'll take your criticism of my dive site descriptions with a grain of sea salt. =8D
Best!

NOT for SNORKELING !!!!!.......2005-07-27
I bought this book for our snorkeling trip to the US Virgin Islands and I was extremely disappointed with it. The snorkeling information in this book consists of a list of 11 of the "top snorkeling spots" that are the same common sites you see in any travel book or website.....it doesn't even describe them or give you any information on them. The dive site info consists of short descriptions of 53 sites in the USVI, which I would rate at fair to good (for diving). About a third of the book is about things like history, shopping, airlines, etc., which are much better covered by any travel guide. If you're looking for a snorkeling guide don't waste your money on this book.
great companion.......2005-07-10
We used this book a ton on our recent trip to the USVI. We were just snorkeling, and found the tips, sealife info and site information that helped us immensely. We fell in love with the VI and are looking forward to exploring more next summer. We just puchased the same book for the BVI and can't wait to go snorkeling next summer there!
This book has great photos and information - I'm so glad I brought it with us on our trip.

Snorkelers Beware.......2007-09-03
Wrong book for those who enjoy snorkeling!! There is great snorkeling in St. Thomas but you will not find it in this book!!
Buy the new edition instead.......2002-12-14
[Bad info] for snorkelers, and the site information is flimsy. But Lonely Planet just published a new edition of this book. ...It's MUCH better than this sorry, 10-year-old book, and the pictures are incredible!
Buy the new edition instead.......2002-12-14
This does suck for snorkelers. But Lonely Planet just put out a new edition of this guide. I bought if off their website, www...(sorry Amazon!). It's MUCH better than this tired old book, and the photos are incredible!
Diving NOT a Snorkeling Guide.......1999-06-29
The title is misleading, therefore only 1 star. There is only one paragraph devoted to snorkeling. It is, however a great 4 star diving guide. Great marine life pictures.
This book is useless as a snorkeling guide........1998-11-27
The title is very misleading. If you are looking for a guide to snorkeling in the USVI, look elseware. The space devoted to snorkeling involves approximently five sentences. I got more information from my Fodor's!

Have you ever wondered where the Stetson hat got its name? John Batterson Stetson, a hatmaker from New Jersey, invented the wide-brimmed, tall-crowned, felt hat after moving west to seek his fortune during the gold rush. While he didn't find much actual gold, his invention was a veritable gold mine, as word of the Stetson (originally called the Boss of the Plains) spread like wildfire. It was the perfect hat for a cowpoke, as it shielded eyes from the sun and necks from the rain--and in a pinch could be used to carry water, fan a fire, or "impress a lady at the Saturday night dance." This attractive, Western-styled picture book tells the story of Stetson, from mild-mannered hatmaker to struggling, sunburned gold digger to the leader of a hatmaking dynasty! Author Laurie Carlson (of More than Moccasins) presents biographical and historical details in a jaunty, compelling voice, and reveals the fascinating process of hatmaking (not recommended for emotional rabbit owners!). Illustrator Holly Meade (who won a Caldecott Honor for Hush) blankets the pages with bold cutouts that embody the savory flavor of the wild American West. Cowboys and cowgirls alike will love hearing the story of how the West was won--by a hat. (Ages 4 to 8) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
When the American West was first being settled, everyone wore whatever hats they'd worn back home: knit caps, wool derbies, straw sombreros. But John Stetson, a young hatmaker who had followed his dream to go west, found the short brim of his stylish New Jersey derby useless in the harsh frontier weather. He invented a "big and picturesque" wide-brimmed, high-crowned hat--a hat for the bullwhackers, mule skinners, drovers, and cowboys of the West. He called it the Boss of the Plains, and although it cost a cowboy a whole month's wages, it quickly became the most popular hat west of the Mississippi. This unusual picture-book biography, illustrated by Caldecott Honor winner Holly Meade in her distinctive cut-paper style, captures the little-known story of the hat that has come to symbolize the West--and the man who invented it. John Stetson fulfilled his dream and became an important part of the great American adventure called the West. Others did it by striking gold or blazing trails through unknown territory. He made his mark on history with a hat. At last -- paperback versions of all-time favorite children's books from Dorling Kindersley! Every young reader will find something fascinating on this exciting list. Affordable prices and outstanding quality make Dorling Kindersley Paperbacks the perfect choice for helping children read every day.

This Book Is The Boss.......2005-11-02
I liked this book and so do my classmates. The illustrations look like they have been done by a master artist! I recommend this book to any kid because the story talks about history of long ago.
This book includes how pioneers survived and how they moved from place to place. Also they show what it's like to live in the Wild West. They use colorful language and descriptive words so you can actually feel what's going on.
Beautiful illustrations with informative text.......2000-03-08
This is a story of John Batterson Stetson and how he invented the hat "Boss Of The Plains" or more commonly known as the "ten-gallon hat". As a boy, John Stetson dreamed of going west. When at last he went, he became an important part of the Great American Frontier Adventure. Others struck gold or blazed trails through unknown territory, but John Stetson made his mark with a hat. The beautiful pictures in this book could have told the story themselves and it will get kids interested in an important part of history.

The illustrations were terrible, information was scarce, and my four year old is under the impression that she can stain her hat with berries.

I think this was a very interesting way to tell people how the cowboy hat was invented. The artwork was what first attracted me to this book, and the illustrations were wonderful. I am 10 years old, and I think this book would be great for children of all ages.

Whether master manipulator or serious psycho, a bad boss can make life miserable for everyone. Most workers simply can't walk away from a sticky supervisory situation, however; they need to learn instead how to cope as well as thrive. Career expert and syndicated columnist Bob Weinstein proposes ways to do just that in I Hate My Boss!: How to Survive and Get Ahead When Your Boss Is a Tyrant, Control Freak, or Just Plain Nuts! The result is an upbeat handbook filled with solid suggestions for getting along with any boss from hell. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Whether you work for a tyrant, a control freak, or a bona fide psychotic, this book gives you permission to hate your boss and still manage to be productive. Upbeat and offbeat, this cure for the common-dictator explains why we hate bosses, why the ``perfect boss'' is a pipe dream, how suffering under a bad boss can improve your work, why it's advantageous to be a smart follower, and how to get along--even emphatize--with even the most power-crazed ruler.

Writing style is ok - plot is inconsistent.......2002-03-13
There were several inconsistencies that I found in this book that made it hard for me to get into it. I don't usually pick apart Silhouette books but these were just too glaring.
The heroine feels guilty about tricking the hero's father, starts to feel angry at the hero, and then the very same page is agreeing to continue the role with a smile, just because the hero says it's ok.
**SPOILER** The heroine convinces a client that he has to stay with the company because of the hero's commitment to the company. Then in the very next encounter with the hero, he's learned the error of his ways and is going to sell the company. Oh, good going.
All in all, the book was inconsistent but the writing itself did flow well. I would read another book by this author.
A Great Category Romance.......2000-04-27
Jane Miller has been in love with Trey Breckenridge III for years, but all along he has seen her as his reliable, sensible, trustworthy secretary and no more. Times change when Trey needs to pretend he's engaged to prove to his father he has settled down in order to gain control of the company.
Trey turns to ever efficient Jane for help and she agrees to the masquerade, figuring it's as close to him as she's likely to ever get. But Trey hadn't counted on what a little make-up and some good clothes would do to Jane's appearance...
This is a very good catergory romance and is well worth the read. It could have been better if the author wrote more detailed love scenes, but the book is still a 5 without them.

Customer Reviews:
A Special House.......2006-09-02
What a visual treat this book was. For anyone that has seen a painting of Carl Larsson's home and fallen in love with the clean lines and colors of Scandinavian interiors, this book carries that love to the next level. Wisconsin native Loran Nordgren created a home using the traditional elements like built-in beds, carving, colors, but added some contemporary conveniences. The books chronicles the planning and construction of the house, but the wealth of photos and design ideas have wide appeal.
Scandinavian Delights.......2004-12-15
I give Mr. Nordgren the owner high credit for the obvious mega $$$ he spent to have his Carl Larsson dream home come to life. However I concur with a prior reviewer that the interior decorating is sub-par with oversized furniture & decorator pieces that evoke a Non-Scandinavian feel that appears to conflict with its authetic Scandinavian backdrop of the houses interior details. If it was my money $$$ I would have sought out correct period Scandinavian antiques or had authentic pieces recreated from scratch with a 100% effort to create the Nordic "look". Would recommend the book as a strong buy with great design ideas throughout.
Fantastic read.......2004-09-21
As a lover of the traditional Scandinavian home style, and the owner of four such homes, I found this book truly helpful in decorating all of them. The authors, including Ms. Sears have such an passionate eye for this unique and gorgeous style.
An American Take on the Swedish Style Home.......2003-06-22
This is an excellent pictoral review of a lovely home recently built in the Wisconsin countryside. The book is full of great ideas for both interior and especially exterior architectural details. As an interior and architectural designer, I have stolen ideas extensively for a Scandinavian style home I am working on which is currently under construction. The house featured in the book is beautifully done, but not for those seeking a subtle take on the Swedish/Scandinavian home. Disneyesque could aptly describe the overall look and feel of the home. This is not to say it does not have a great charm, but it slams its design concepts home with no punches pulled. It is an American interpretation and distillation of Scandinavia.
There are a lot of great ideas for color and design for the built interiors, but I found the interior furnishings and accessories to be ameteurish and do not live up to the professional standard of the architecture that contains it. The furnishings are rather middle of the road contemporary country style and do not suit the carefully orchestrated design concepts of the architectural designer. For instance the sofas are large and clunky, and are upholstered in a bland fabric - none of which would ever been found in a house of this type of traditional Swedish home.
With that caveat I highly recommend the book to those who admire the Scandinavian style and especially to anyone planning to design and build a home in this style.
Scandinavian Interior Design.......2001-12-18
As a folk artist, I am interested in European interior design. My interest in Swedish design lies in the magnificient use of color. This book provided what I needed.
