Great resource.......2003-05-01
This is one of the finest books on Midwestern wildflowers. I originally bought the book for my mother and then needed one for myself. I continually pour through this book in anticipation of spring and as I find something in the woods that needs identifying. The book contains great pictures and is organized in general order of appearance in the wild.

Fabulous Work.......2001-08-16
I was extremely pleased when I received this book in the mail. I wasn't expecting the the pictures to be so beautifully vibrant and colorful. I'm not really sure what the previous review was making reference to. Each photograph is accompanied by text describing exactly how tall each flower is. I did take this book with me to a few parks, and I was easily able to locate and identify plants with its assistance. Even if you don't plan to use this book as a reference guide, it makes for beautiful viewing nonetheless. I hope this review was helpful to you.
Not a plant ID book.......2001-07-30
If you are looking for a book with beautiful color photos of northeastern U.S. wild flowers, then this book will serve that purpose well. However, this is not what I would consider a helpful identification book. Many of the photos are close-ups of just the flowers which gives no sense of scale. The close-ups also mean that the leaves/vegetative parts of the plant remain a mystery. The text is kept to a minimum for each species. There is plenty of room on the page for more information, but the authors have left that space for the reader to make notes. The information that is provided is very sketchy in terms of habitat, identifying characteristics, and so on. Obviously a book of this size can't have everything, so the authors have sacrificed information in favor of visual stimulus. So enjoy the nice color photos, but don't expect to get much more out of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Another fantastic title in the Frommer's series.......2005-09-16
Darwin Porter presents us with yet another excellent and usable title in the Frommer's series. We have found it to be an excellent vacation planning tool in our trip to Spain. With details ranging from where to stay for less money with the most value, to places to go eat/visit and things to avoid too, the book has something for everyone with Spain in their travel plans. We have used Frommer's guides for 5 different places so far, and not one of them has dissapointed us. This one was no exception. Highly recommended.
Good Basic Choice.......2004-07-21
Although generally much more fond of the Rough Guide series, I found Frommer's Spain to be a pleasant surprise. This guidebook is a solid, well-written piece of work.
Perhaps the best feature of this guide lies in it's exactitude. Frommer's seems to go to great length to get their times right, and by telling exactly what you'll be paying for a typical meal somewhere, they have eliminated the guesswork that goes with reading "prices in the $10 to $30 range". Although Europe should be an adventure, nobody likes being caught short. Frommer's is all about making sure that doesn't happen.
Culturally competent, Frommer's seems to care very much about WHY places are important. Although I do not agree with all their inclusions and exclusions, this guidebook will, for the most part, steer you in the right direction to see the highlights of Seville, Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, and many other larger cities.
All in all, although a bit more spotty than it should be about Spain outside of Her larger cities, Frommer's is a good buy for a decent overview of Spain and a GREAT BUY if you aren't straying too far afield from the major cities.

Book Description
You're tired of staring at bare hardwood floors, but the Oriental rug you covet is prohibitively expensive. The solution? A floorcloth that you can make yourself for a fraction of the cost of an area rug or carpet. Floorcloths - hand-painted durable canvas rugs - have become popular again because of a renewed interest in Early American decorating techniques. And since the most appropriate place for a floorcloth is on the hardwood floors used in so much of today's interior decoration, they complement today's lifestyle. The design possibilities, from country to contemporary, are endless.
Filled with essential techniques and sensational color variations, FLOORCLOTH MAGIC: HOW TO PAINT CANVAS RUGS FOR DECORATIVE HOME USE is the most comprehensive, easy-to-follow guide to creating beautiful paint-based rugs for your home. It provides basic how-to instruction on every material, tool, and technique, plus recipes for paint finishes, including sponging, stamping, marbling, stenciling, ragging, and more. An introduction to color palettes and pattern development makes this a useful guide for a beginner as well as a valued resource for any craftsperson.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for any level.......2007-03-13
This is the second of 2 books I ordered because I wanted to paint and design a floor cloth.
Easy instructions and some beautiful designs for anyone who does not want to design their own.
INSPIRING.......2007-02-21
The artist does a good job covering all the needed supplies and methods to create such beautiful floor cloths. There is a lot covered in these pages, although I could have skipped the color theory part given its really trial and error and personal design ultimately. There are lots of beautiful floor cloths to admire by this artist and others. Wish there were some substantial patterns to apply in addition to the very basic stripes included. This book helps motivate one to begin and do it right, and the rest is really up to one's imagination which the author gives a good springboard to leap from.
Floorcloth Magic.......2002-08-12
Clearly and concisely written, no confusion or contradictions like some other books on the same subject. Excellent section on contributing artists showing a wide diversity of styles.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding!.......2006-04-12
I just got back from one of Jerry's workshops and am amazed at how much I feel that I learned. I bought this book at the workshop and it is excellent. It follows Jerry's method of step by step instructions with a photo of what the canvas should look like at each stage.
Jerry's workshop followed the same procedure except we could ask questions and get Jerry to help us over rough spots.
I've bought lot's of art books trying to find something that will help me. Jerry's books fill the bill perfectly! You can't go wrong with them.

Painting Magic by Jerry Yarnell.......2003-02-19
Excellent book! Very detailed step by step instructions for each painting right down to colors to mix and brushes to use. Highly recommended.
Instruction, Inspiriation and Fun.......2002-02-02
This book is a welcome addition to the vast repository of teaching materials by Jerry Yarnell. The paintings are more intricate and challenging than in the previous two books. There are moody seas and skies, dramatic cliffs, serene settings, quaint buildings, and birds, elk and a variety of wildlife in the compositions. The step by step instructions are comprehensive, with excellent and detailed color photos of each step. Mr. Yarnell does a terrific job of reiterating and expanding on the fine art techniques that form the basis of all of his teaching material. If you are looking for an instructional painting book that is beyond the beginners level, then you should find this book inspirational, challenging and fun.
Customer Reviews:
Paint Magic by Jacasta Innes.......2007-01-12
Very informative and thorough.
Would highly recommend to anyone seeking knowledge about Faux Painting.
Not really impressed.......2006-07-03
I will start with what was good in the book...there were perhaps five illustrated techniques which I found good, particularly a few wood finishes. The bad news is that most of the instruction is just written and not photographed step by step. Most of the photos in this book are of the finished product.
Excellent instructions;wonderful photographs;many techniques.......1998-08-24
Antiquing; bambooing; bleaching; colorwashing; combing; decorative painting; dragging; dyeing; gilding; graining; graphiting; japanningh; lacquering; lining; marbling; prphyry; ragging; rag-rolling; rubber stamping; rubbing; spattering; sponging; staining; stenciling; stippling; tortoiseshelling; trompe l'oeil; vinegar painting - all beautifully photographed and described. Makes one want to buy a house and (old) furniture just to do some of these wonderful finishes! Primarily for traditional homes, but this book is well worth having for anyone considering decorating.

Book Description
Something is terribly wrong with Connor's mom--she keeps slipping into bizarre trances. Connor suspects that the key to his mom's strange behavior is an old art book filled with paintings of a woman who looks exactly like her. But the artist who created those paintings died before his mom was even born.
Connor gets his chance to break the evil link between the past and the present when he is mysteriously whisked back in time to the 1920s. But can he save his mom--and himself--before it's too late?
Customer Reviews:
Okaaaay.......2007-04-24
This book has one of the best storylines I've ever read. Kathryn Reiss knows how to make even the simplist and strangest subjects seem scary and spooky! Sometimes there errors in the writing, but overall it was a really good book. It is about a boy named Conor who comes home from school one day to find his mom acting very strange. He soon finds himself barrelling through the bounds of time and must find out how to save his mom...and himself. I would highly sugjest this book for an eight or nine year old.
Paint by Mediocre Magic.......2007-04-23
The idea of an 11 year old boy traveling back in time to save his mother was an interesting story line. However, the characters and plot could have been better developed. I felt like the story was told too quickly and that more details could have been provided for the reader instead of waiting until the last minute to fill in all the plot. Overall, the story was very creative, but could have been better organized.
Better Than You Would Think.......2007-04-19
When I saw the title, I was extremely sceptical. The story revolves around an 11 year old boy named Connor. One day his mom is randomly acting very strange. He gets whisked back to the year 1926 to save his mom, and himself, 80 years before they are in danger. I found the story cliched(save me from the "evil powders"), and not one bit scary or disturbing. The author didn't seem able to construct a good atmosphere in many seens, and also poorly done emotions. Despite these flaws, I enjoyed paint by magic. I think this would be best for a 9 year old, mainly because they would'nt notice the authors sometimes just plain bad writing. Still, it was enjoyable and I think it is worth reading.
Paint by Magic.......2005-11-16
I first read this book when I was in fifth grade. I thought it was the best book I had ever read. I picked it up again in the sixth, and I thought it was horrible. I thought it was badly written, though I could not tell in the fifth grade. I didn't get a feel for the characters either. I thought that they said "freaky" way too much at the wrong times. They really annoyed me. I did, however, love the plot. It was so creative and gripping. This could have been a better book.
Great Intriguing Book.......2005-09-17
You won't ever want to put this book down. I was secretly reading this in my science period, that's how good it is ^.^ Anyways, this is a story about a boy named Connor who finds her mom one day becoming very strange and gets into bizzare trances. Connor has to find a way to save her mom from being like a zombie (although he doesn't suspect that at first. Then, Connor gets whisked back into the 1920's, and there, he gets the clues and puts them together to save her mother. This book was a great book, and I recommend it for 10 up for small font, or good readers 10 below. Very great book, one of my recommedations for my book club.

Book Description
The third edition of this bestselling guide to painted finishes includes step-by-step instructions on the latest techniques for painting floors, walls, and furniture. With dozens of new color photogrpahs.
Customer Reviews:
New Paint Magic -- a 'Must' for a home decorators library.......2006-02-24
No serious home decorator's library is complete without a copy of this very valuable and informative book. The New Paint Magic book is certainly not for the 'splash and dash' approach to painted finishes and techniques. Instead, the book provides an excellent and thorough approach to techniques and materials for restoring, painting and decorating painted surfaces, including floors, walls and furniture. I used the section on painting and varnishing furniture as a guide to painting an armoire and the results were amazing.
Good info...terminology may be confusing.......2002-12-18
This was my first decorative painting book. I enjoyed it but found that the British terminology could occasionally (not frequently) trip me up Once you understand that "emulsion" is really latex paint you will find the information in this book very helpful. Jocasta Innes is one artist who catapulted decorative painting into the public spotlight and this book contains oodles of examples from basic sponging to trompe l'oeil techniques. I followed her technique for colorwashing in my livingroom and am very pleased with the results. I do recommend this book.
Short on illustrations...but loads of info.......2000-02-11
Like the other reviewer, I was hoping for superb instructions from this master of faux finishing...but what I did find was loads of text providing helping tips for many finishes, use of tools, colors and products. My most valued section was the Fundamentals. Here, Innes discusses finishes and stains, how to use them, what can go wrong, advantages and disadvantages. Still a valued book to my decorating library.
Did not live up to my expectations.......1998-11-25
Having heard so much about Jocasta Innes, I was dying to get my hands on this book but when it finally arrived, I felt let down. I had expected step by step photographs for each technique (or at least a lot of photos) with step by step detailed instructions as well as the secrets to getting a professional looking finish. Close up shots of the various finishes are also few. I also did not like the fact that the book is very text book like.
However she does cover a lot of techniques; from the usual colourwashing, ragging and sponging to things like faux fresco, rubbing, staining, vinegar painting etc.
J.Innes also offers some advice on choosing colors(although a separate chapter on colour e.g. the different colours, colour recipes etc. would have been a nice addition), decorating tips and provides some nice photos of whole rooms that give you a better idea of what the finish would look like.
"The New Paint Magic" is a disappointment compared to Kevin McCloud's "The Complete Book of Paint and Decorating Techniques". McCloud provides detailed instruction on each technique, outlining the pitfalls as well as lots of beautiful photographs with colour recipes for each finish. A good buy.
I certainly would not recommend "The New Paint Magic" to the beginner.

Don't waster your money.......2006-11-10
If you're an artist you won't get anything from this book and if you're trying to learn how to draw you won't get anything from this book. Apparently based on a reoccuring segment from a British TV show, where the author would show celebrity guests "how to draw instantly", this book has all the depth and insight you would expect from such a venue. There are some great books on art technique and instruction, this is not one of them.
