Book Description
At age nine, Mara knows many things (how to do laundry, for instance), but there are lots of things she doesn't know - like her mother, or her father, or even God.
Customer Reviews:
a wonderful novel.......2007-06-24
In her debut novel, Watching the Tree Limbs, Mary DeMuth introduces us to Maranatha, a creative girl who longs to color her world and to belong. As nine-year-old Mara struggles to cope with life-changing circumstances and rejection in her small Texas town, she falls prey to a neighbor boy who sexually abuses and terrorizes her. Although her story is heart-wrenching and painfully sad at times, it is not depressing or hopeless. Mara's story is also sweet and funny, especially her interactions with her best friend, Camilla, and her guardian's housekeeper, Zady. DeMuth gives the reader a beautifully written tale of grace and hope, transformation and deliverance. Mara plays real-life Nancy Drew with Camilla to solve the mystery of her past, which adds an unexpected element of suspense to the novel. As she grows, so does her faith, not only in God but in those He puts in her life to help and love her. The faith DeMuth portrays is not full of simplistic, pat answers and platitudes. Mara rages at God and wonders how He could allow such a thing to happen, even as she views her abuser as having almost supernatural powers to see inside her head and know her every thought and action. I look forward to continuing Maranatha's story in the book's sequel, Wishing on Dandelions.
Transformational truth.......2007-06-20
Only read this book if you're ready for God to change your heart! You'll laugh with the protagonist, Mara, as she grows up, makes friends, and experiences the quirks of small-town life in Burl, Texas. You'll cry with her, too, as she experiences isolation, rejection and the deep pain of betrayal by those whom she should have been able to trust. By the end of the book, you'll rejoice with Mara as she works through her painful experiences to discover fresh hope and restoration.
Mary DeMuth's gift for storytelling is revealed in the creation and development of complex, yet lovable characters; the sustaining of a well-paced plot; and a balanced, redemptive approach to an extremely difficult subject: sexual abuse. With poignance and grace, Mary addresses abuse and its related issues in a way that is truthful, yet redemptive. If you're tired of "fluffy fiction" and are searching for authentic, well-written, Christ-centered prose, look no further than Watching the Tree Limbs. This book has certainly earned its Christy award nomination for the category of "First Novel"! It's "transformational truth" at its finest. A must-read for any woman who has dealt with sexual abuse.
A must read.......2007-05-18
It's been a while since I sat down to read a book that I could not put down. Watching the Tree Limbs is exactly that type of book. Author Mary DeMuth hooked me from the moment the book opens with "Folks like my friend Camilla have lofty goals before they die, like stealing a kiss from a movie star or seeing the Sahara. Mine's quite simple. I want to tell my story unsevered, as if it was actually me walking the sweltering pavement of Burl, Texas." Half-way through the book, I purchased the sequel because I knew that I was not going to be able to wait to start the next one once I finished.
What I love about Mary's storytelling is that she paints a poignant, beautiful picture of redemption and Christ's unconditional love without feeling like it's preachy or spoken with an ulterior motive. Certainly, Mary desires to share her faith through her words, but she chooses to show, rather than tell. The redemption story is so woven into the development of the characters and the movement of the book, that you can't separate it out and say, "here's the author's agenda." In fact, it's the way I think my friend Mary lives her life: you can't say, here's the spiritual part of Mary's life and here's the rest. As a result, I feel comfortable - even encourage - recommending this book to non-believers.
But have no doubts, just because it's "Christian fiction" does not mean that it is not a good story. Mary uses her words like a paintbrush on canvas, encouraging the reader at times to simply marvel at the intricacy of details and overall artistry of the story. I laughed, I cried and I connected with the characters. I couldn't read fast enough, and yet wanted to savor every word. I won't share much about the story itself; I'll leave that to you to experience fresh. Know that Mary addresses some tough issues, and at times she reaches out and squeezes your heart just enough that it aches, but that pain only leads you to a greater appreciation for the redemption offered to the characters in the book (and to us, through Jesus Christ).
Please don't think I gush just because Mary is my friend. If I thought her book stunk, I would let you know. But I don't, and knowing her heart just makes it that much sweeter to recommend it to you.
Compelling story with strong Christian worldview .......2007-04-30
I became acquainted with Mary DeMuth at a writer's conference and picked up her books to read as a result. I found Mary's first published novel to be a compelling, honest, gut-wrenching account of an orphan's search for answers about her life. Although I generally disdain "Christian fiction" I just may reconsider my stance after spending many enjoyable hours reading Mary's fiction.
Watching the Clock Tick.......2007-04-13
Kudos to any author who can successfully draw me away from a looming pile of "to do" items. This book was so painful yet delightful, I couldn't put it down until I'd reached the last page of sweet Mara's tale. Mary DeMuth has woven a heart-rending story filled with delicious characters, amazing imagery, and redemption rolled into one. As a first time novelist, I'm a bit jealous she could pull this off with her debut novel, but I'll forgive her. I consumed this puppy in a day and a half and can't wait to read part two, Wishing on Dandelions. I'll just be sure to get at least part of my "to do" list done first.

Book Description
Here is a collection of wild and zany, hilariously funny stories about the life and adventures of a couple who have lived for over twenty years at a real address on Santa Claus Lane and--what else?--own a Christmas tree farm in--where else?--Texas!
Darrell is a lazy, inefficient and ten-thumbed farmer who would rather write or do most anything except farm, even though he's the one who got them into it. Betty is his hard-working, efficient and competent wife. Darrell loves her dearly, and it's a wonder she has stayed with him, considering all the misadventures, escapades and hair-brained schemes he gets himself and his long-suffering wife into.
These stories range from ravenous Bed & Breakfast guests who eat them out of house and home, the attack of the killer kittens, couch testing, wreath-making for dummies and many, many more, related in a style all Darrell's own. If you can get through this book without laughing until your ribs are sore, you are a rare exception and haven't got a funny bone in your body.

Park you bottom, put up your feet and prepare to laugh.......2000-03-14
I will never look at a Christmas tree the same again. What a funny, funny recounting of life in the not so fast lane of a Christmas tree farmer and his long suffering wife Betty.
If you've had a hard day at the office and want to relax while reading about the hilarious trials and tribulations of someone else, this book is the one. This is better than cherry vanilla ice cream.
One of the funniest books I've ever read.......2000-03-03
This just has to be the funniest book I have ever read. I was doing a job for the publisher Bookmice, improving the appearance and usability of the HTML versions of several books: background, headings, internal links and so on.This kind of work doesn't involve much reading from the book, but when I started on 'Santa Claus Lane', my eyes were caught by a sentence, and I got to reading, then I went to the start of the chapter to make sense of it. Before long, I gave away all pretense of working on the book, and simply read it from end to end. Even then, the content wouldn't let me alone. Many of the stories were well worth a second read, and now weeks later, they still make me chuckle. Darrel has a wicked turn of phrase: * "I was watching a football game through closed eyelids (this is something only men can do)." * "...anyone who has been owned by kittens..." * "What's that noise?" she asked. "The wall," I said. "Walls don't make noise." "They do when I bump them with my head." He describes perfectly ordinary domestic episodes in a way that'll have you laugh. I suspect this book is not for youngsters, but the more mature among us will identify with this self-effacing rogue and his ever-victorious wife Betty.

a terrific guide with a Brit sense of humor .......2007-05-24
Not only very informative, well-laid out and user friendly, this book nailed some classic South Florida schtick which, to those in the know, (myself included) will find quite humorous. But conservative tourists of a certain demographic might prefer the more conventional (translation: boring)guides.
By the way, the TIME OUT Paris guide is tops.

Book Description
Liza Picard immerses her readers in the spectacular details of daily life in the London of Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603). Beginning with the River Thames, she examines the city on the north bank, still largely confined within the old Roman walls. The wealthy lived in mansions upriver, and the royal palaces were even farther up at Westminster. On the south bank, theaters and spectacles drew the crowds, and Southwark and Bermondsey were bustling with trade. Picard examines the streets and the traffic in them; she surveys building methods and shows us the decor of the rich and the not-so-rich. Her account overflows with particulars of domestic life, right down to what was likely to be growing in London gardens.
Picard then turns her eye to the Londoners themselves, many of whom were afflicted by the plague, smallpox, and other diseases. The diagnosis was frequently bizarre and the treatment could do more harm than good. But there was comfort to be had in simple, homely pleasures, and cares could be forgotten in a playhouse or the bull-baiting and bear-baiting rings, or watching a good cockfight. The more sober-minded might go to hear a lecture at Gresham College or the latest preacher at Paul's Cross.
Immigrants posed problems for Londoners who, though proud of their nation's religious tolerance, were concerned about the damage these skilled migrants might do to their own livelihoods, despite the dominance of livery companies and their apprentice system. Henry VIII's destruction of the monasteries had caused a crisis in poverty management that was still acute, resulting in begging (with begging licenses!) and a "parochial poor rate" paid by the better-off.
Liza Picard's wonderfully vivid prose enables us to share the satisfaction and delights, as well as the vexations and horrors, of the everyday lives of the denizens of sixteenth-century London.
Customer Reviews:
Elizabeth's London.......2006-09-06
I stumbled on Liza Picard's books quite by chance. After looking at the publishing date in some of the books it is apparent some of them have been around for several years. I am now recommending them to anyone and everyone and I am so glad I stumbled across this one on a bookshop shelf. I have now read them all, but this one was the first.
As soon as you start to read the book it becomes apparent that the author is passionate about the subject and wants the reader to enjoy the experience as much as she has in the writing of it. How apt that the author starts the book with the life blood of the great City of London. Meandering like a great artery through the heart of the City. It moves on to the streets, houses and gardens; cooking, housework and shopping; clothes, jewellery and make-up; health and medicine; sex and food; education, etiquette and hobbies; religion, law and crime.
Liza Picard was born in 1927. She read law and qualified as a barrister but did not practice. Quite where she gleaned all this information from I am not sure. That it was a labour of love is obvious to anyone who reads her books and I for one am grateful.
Great bottom-up history.......2005-08-18
This book does a very good job at portraying how ordinary people lived their lives in the time of the Good Queen Bessie, from what they ate and wore to their furniture and sewage conditions. The only complaint that I have about it is that it is very difficult to visualize the descriptions of the clothing, and when referenced to one of the pictures I still didn't know what part of the outfit she was talking about. I would have rated this a 5 out of 5 if it would have included labled diagrams of the clothing.
History as Daily Life.......2005-05-02
This book is unique in that it doesn't deal with the great sweep of history and its players so much as dwell on day to day life. In particular, the daily life of ordinary people who, in their own way, were not players on the larger stage. Rather, these people were those folk just going about their life.
Any moderately well read student of the 16th century would be familiar with the world of Henry VIII, Elizabeth, Shakespeare, Francis Drake and the Spanish Armada. Yet how many of these students would be familiar with the gardens, religious beliefs, medicine, fashions and diets of the era? Yes, many would have a smattering of knowledge but Liza Picard has done a fine job in providing many of these details of life plus a host of others. Who, for example, would be familiar with such amusements as bull, bear or even lion baiting? Imagine the spectacle of setting a lion in a pit with a team of dogs for a fight to the finish; unthinkable today but of the greatest sport during Elizabeth's time.
Liza Picard's book is an unusual work of history. She has chosen to deconstruct a different world to that of most historians. Her focus has been upon the ordinary rather than the glamorous. Ms Picard has chosen a different road to travel but one that is very fulfilling for the reader. Elizabeth I was, in my opinion, the most important woman to ever live. This book goes some of the way to providing background to an extraordinary woman living in an extraordinary age.
