As good as it shall be.......2007-10-09
As true virgin prairies are certinly rare, so rare that it takes an extrodinary effort to find one, I have been blessed. Previous to buying this book,I,on a whim decided to visit Hayden Prairie, in Iowa, listed in this book, some of the photos may have been from there. I visited and took pics with my new camera with the macro and ring flash(my book is coming)but didn't know what the photos were of. This book will straighten you out on the ID section of flowers. I was disappointed on the lack of leaf differentiation-palmate vs pinnate in the leaf ID. I have found flowers in the undergrowth that were not covered in this book. Things like this cannot be restored. Stand on a hill at Hayden Prairie, look around, and try not to be depressed, as the vista used to be as dynamic and intricate as what you are standing on.
Tallgrass Prairie Wildflowers 2.......2007-10-05
This is an excellent field guide. Great photos to help with identification. I would purchase it again without hesitation!
great book!.......2007-01-12
This book is full of wonderful information and great pictures. It has helped me identify many plants and weeds. I especially love the section on weeds that seems absent from many other books.

Tallgrass Prairie Wildflowers 2: A Field Guide to Common Wildflowers and Plants of the Prairie Midwest (Falcon Guides Wildflowers)
ASIN: 0978959000 |
Book Description
A pioneer and leader in the preservation and restoration of native Midwest prairies since the 1930s, the University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum has a stellar collection of prairie plant species, including horsetails, ferns, rushes, sedges, grasses, shrubs, vines, and wildflowers. This guide illustrates and describes more than 360 native and introduced species that grow and bloom on the Arboretum prairies and also briefly discusses or mentions many additional species, infraspecific taxa, and hybrids. Its intent is to increase awareness and respect for remaining small prairie remnants, motivate readers to work for prairie preservation and restoration, and encourage the planting of native species in yards and gardens.
Botanist and taxonomist Theodore S. Cochrane has written the text to engage a variety of readers: prairie enthusiasts, gardeners, amateur botanists, younger students learning about plants, and college students and professionals. Nomenclature follows in part the new APG classification system. Richly illustrated with detailed color photographs by Claudia S. Lipke and botanical illustrations and maps by Kandis Elliot, the guide provides a beautiful and informative sample of the flora of the Arboretum and of the southern Wisconsin prairie landscape. Many of the plants, of course, are also found throughout the upper Midwestern United States and in adjacent southern Canada.

Surely the next best thing to visiting the UW-Madison Arboretum in person........2007-05-08
Written by Theodore S. Cochrane (Senior Academic Curator of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Herbarium), Kandis Elliot and Claudia S. Lipke (senior artists in the Department of Botany), Prairie Plants of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum is a beautiful guide featuring full color photography throughout. Each page of this lavish guide features a different plant, with descriptions of its leaves, flowers, fruits, range and habitats in Wisconsin, and other insights, not to mention multiple images of the species' leaves and flowers especially. A brief introductory section discussing prairies, a glossary, and an index round out this lavish reference, which is surely the next best thing to visiting the UW-Madison Arboretum in person.
Product quality.......2007-03-21
Excellent book for those interested in Midwest prairie plants. Photos are very good quality and plant descriptions are thorough yet concise. Organized by plant family.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference.......2003-05-12
This book set a high standard for the soon-to-be Falcoln series. The stunning photographs complement the confident text. Ladd's book has been a constant companion when I search out prairie remnants. A professional, consummate work that should find a place on every botanist's bookshelf.
These are all native plants.......2002-09-08
I felt I should comment on one part of Rissa's review. She mentions that Queen Anne's lace is not in this book, and feels this is a detriment. On the contrary, this is one of the best features of the book: it contains only NATIVE plants, and not many of the invasive, non-native weeds, like Queen Anne's lace, which are very difficult to control in prairies.
If you don't see a common plant in this book, it's likely because it is an imported weed.
There are many, many "wildflower" identification books that include everything-and-the-kitchen-sink, adding to the common confusion about what a 'wildflower' is. (For instance, Dame's Rocket should be on the 'weed' list, but it's in most of the 'wildflower' mixes.)
If you are looking for an all-inclusive book, the Golden Press,"A Guide to Field Identification of Wildflowers of North America", ISBN 0-307-13664-7 is helpful because it includes the weeds, but tells where they came from and how far they have spread across North America. Of course the USDA's PLANTS website (plants.usda.gov) is the best internet source for this technical information.
This book makes it easy.......2002-09-08
Just as it is hard to look up the spelling of a word in the dictionary, until you know how it is spelled, it can be hard to identify a plant until you know what it is. This book of photographs of common prairie flowers, grouped by color, is pretty easy to flip through until you find the plant at hand. The caveat is that many 'pink' flowers are in the 'purple' section, but this is true of many flowers (few people really consider 'purple coneflower' to be purple.)
If you want just one field guide to get you started with these gorgeous plants, this is the one I would recommend.
"the iridescent glow was beautiful and wondrous".......2002-03-27
I really like the fact that this book is laid out according to flower color, it makes it so much easier to find the plant I'm trying to identify. I also liked the clear, beautiful photographs as well as the detailed text that provides common and Latin names, family, description and habitat or range for each plant. The book seems very complete with 295 species listed, but I was surprised to find that Queen Anne's Lace isn't in it, which, although it may not be native, is certainly ubiquitious here in the tallgrass prairie where I live.
There is a ten-page chapter on how to use the book, a sort of Botany 101, which is very helpful in explaining how to identify prairie plants via what the author calls their "diagnostic features" -- leaves, flowers, overall shape, scent and, in some cases, the sap. The book's cover is sturdy and water-resistant which is nice if you need to set it down on the ground while you take pictures. Also included is a very useful directory of many of America's remaining tallgrass prairie preserves and parks with descriptions plus phone numbers of the government agencies, universities and organizations that oversee them (I was pleasantly surprised at how many times The Nature Conservancy is listed). The book ends with a short bibliography and a very complete index.
I bought this book as a companion to "Birding Illinois," by Sheryl De Vore (from the same publisher). De Vore's book covers various Illinois parks and wildlife areas, many of which are prairies and woodlands. I figure I can take both books and look for birds as well as beautiful prairie flowers.
THE book to have for identification of Tallgrass Wildflowers.......2002-01-25
This book has fabulous photos and excellent descriptions to aid in the identification of tallgrass prairie wildflowers. Its a must have for any prairie enthusiast.

Promises not kept..........2007-04-06
The Introduction states, "there is a dichotomous key to plant families included"... but don't believe it; and a good key would really be a helpful addition! You better know your plant families (as previously stated by an earlier reviewer) quite well before I would recommend this book. The map in this book indicates it's focused on Canada and North Dakota - although the book does indicate on a general map that "some" of the included plants range quite widely to the east past Lake Ontario, south into Missouri and Kansas, and west into Idaho and Utah. The text doesn't clarify which of the plants these are however.
Save some money and go with the 1984 Edition.......2006-07-29
I gave this book a 2 star because I feel they are trying to trick people into beliveing it is different book from the 1984 version.
I feel like the authors ripped us off when we bought this book. Basically it is the same as the 1984 edition, except they threw in some grasses and sedges. To help sell the book they changed the front cover to look different from the 19997 version, but all the wording and photos are the same. This threw us off as we purchased the book thinking it was different than our 1984 version!
The did add the grass/sedge section but other books deal much better with this section than they did.
I am not entirely pleased with many of the photos in this book, are out of focus or are just badly taken. What gives?
Stick with the 1984 version and save some money.
Very helpful, excellent illustrations & photos.......2000-06-13
I have used the earlier version of this book for a while and liked the fine photographs and concise, well chosen information on each page. The photos are interspersed with line drawings of critical floral features, a nice touch. I had only wished that the authors would produce a version with some of the common grasses and sedges. Voila, the 3rd edition includes a section on these ubiquitous but often overlooked plants that is up to the standard of the rest of the book. A note for novices: the book is organized by plant families, not flower color - this makes the book a bit harder to consult for occaisional use (there are simple keys to help you get to the right place) but getting to know the plant families will pay off in the long run. A very helpful book for the novice, advanced amateur, or botanist getting to know the area for the first time.

Book Description
Slightly over a century ago, the tallgrass prairie in North America stretched over most of what is now Iowa, Illinois, southern Minnesota, northern Missouri, and the eastern edges of the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Today, only a few scattered patches--less than one percent--remain of the endless, flat, silent land that greeted the pioneers and finally fell to their plows. Konza, an area of over 8,600 acres in the Flint Hills in Kansas, is the largest remaining undisturbed tract of tallgrass prairie in the nation.
Konza Prairie is the extraordinary and often lyrical story of this tallgrass ecosystem. Biologist O.J. Reichman, a compelling writer, vividly portrays this often poorly understood environment as a living laboratory where organisms--from monarch butterflies to the striking big bluestem grass itself--interact with the physical world of the prairie.
In separate chapters, Reichman provides an absorbing natural-history introduction to such topics as the tallgrass ecosystem; the dynamic geological processes which created the seemingly placid prairie; and the many inhabitants of the prairie, from plants and insects to birds, reptiles, and mammals. Interspersed with this central text are informative sections (set off by italics) about the processes taking place, among them Evolution, the role of photosynthesis; fire; patterns of weather; and competition among organisms. Finally, Reichman describes what is being done to preserve the prairie and provides an extensive listing of the common and scientific names of organisms mentioned in the text.
Beautifully written and illustrated with color photographs, line drawings, and maps, Konza Prairie is an excellent introduction to a little-known ecosystem--and is superb national history.
Customer Reviews:
Tallgrass prairies at their best.......2000-06-29
I think the prairie is the most fascinating ecosystem on earth. The prairie evokes nostalgic feelings for the west and the settling of our nation. In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in preserving prairies, understanding prairie biology, and even in making prairie parks for people to visit. Konza Prairie is located in the Flint Hills of Kansas, some of the best remaining native tallgrass prairie in the nation. Dr. Reichman tells the story of Konza Prairie, and prairies in general, in interesting detail for both the novice and the serious biologist. I liked the book so much, that when my family and I visited the Midwest recently, we made a special trip to see the Konza Prairie. If you have an interest in prairies, don't miss this book.

Book Description
In the 1960s, college sports required more than athletic prowess from its African American players. For many pioneering basketball players on 18 teams in the Atlantic and Southeastern conference, playing ball meant braving sometimes menacing crowds during the tumultuous era of civil rights. Perry Wallace feared he would be shot when he first stepped onto a court in his Vanderbilt uniform. During one road game, Georgia’s Ronnie Hogue fended off a hostile crowd with a chair. Craig Mobley had to flee the Clemson campus, along with other black students. C.B. Claiborne couldn’t attend the Duke team banquet when it was held at an all-white country club. Wendell Hudson’s mother cried with heartache when her son decided to play at the University of Alabama, and Al Heartley locked himself in a campus dorm at North Carolina State for safety the night Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. Grounded in the civil rights struggles on campuses throughout the south, the voices of players, coaches, opponents and fans reveal the long-neglected story of race, sports and social history.
Barry Jacobs has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, People and other publications. He is the author of several sports books, including Coach K’s Little Blue Book. He lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
