Book Description
This volume presents the first detailed account of the neurobiological mechanisms of satiation. The ten chapters of the book detail the neural, endocrine, and cellular underpinnings of the process. Authors expert in different aspects of satiation have compiled a critical overview of recent advances and current problems in this field. Recent scientific evidence has revealed that food stimuli activate satiation before the actual absorption of digested food--a significant change to the traditional perspective that satiation depends on the post-absorptive repletion of metabolic fuels. The inclusion of a chapter on the satiation of alcohol is unique in a book on food intake, and shows the convergence of ideas on satiation in these two areas. Comprehensive in scope and accessible to a wide array of advanced students and professionals, Satiation: From Gut to Brain is an authoritative and up-to-date review of every aspect of this important physiological process. Although intended primarily for neuroscientists, nutritionists, and psychobiologists, the book will also be useful for physiologists, pharmacologists, and psychologists concerned with eating and its disorders.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting but some problems.......2006-07-03
Patagonia is of course a large area and trying to cover it in a single book is a challenge. The author made that harder by including topics that aren't really "Patagonia" and this has helped to create a book that is larger than I would want to carry. There is a lot of space dedicated to Buenos Aires and Santiago, presumably because a foreign visitor might spend time there as well as in places further south. But the book space could have been better used sticking to the point. The author includes the Chilean Lake District under the "Patagonia" banner, which most Chileans don't seem to think is appropriate (unless they are marketing something in the Lakes, and want the Patagonia cachet). There is mention of Cochamó (east of Puerto Montt) and although elsewhere in the book much is made of the Butch Cassidy connection to Patagonia, nothing is said about how Cochamó played into the lives of the Wild Bunch, since this place was visited often by them and served as the port from which their cattle were shipped to northern Chile. I was pleased to see our store (World's End) mentioned for Puerto Natales, but surprised to see the author's mention of high-speed internet. When we did have some PCs for client use (no longer - that was prior to my arrival in 2001) they were certainly low-speed. Anyway, for the past several years there have been many decent ciber-café places in town. There are other errors surrounding Natales, including the description of the post office being at the southwest corner of the plaza (it's to the east of the plaza). The name of Last Hope Sound is improperly associated with Spanish colonial governor Sarmiento de Gamboa in the Natales chapter (it was Ladrilleros who did the exploring and naming). And throughout the rest of the book there is similar (and crazier) evidence of fact-checking shortcomings. Some serious and significant information about Ruta 40 (Argentine side) is in error regarding distances and fuel availability. For example, the book says Bajo Caracoles is the only gas for nearly 500 km, but in one direction it is just 128 or so km to fuel (at Perito Moreno) and about 336 km to fuel at Tres Lagos, in the other direction, and these fuel points have been that way for many years. Similar problems plague this book, but it still has a lot of useful material, inaccuracies notwithstanding.

Customer Reviews:
The author knows this country.......2003-08-02
We traveled with this guide and another and found this book to be more acurate and frank than the other guide. Clearly the author knows Chile and we found his practical travel advice to be the best and his sensibilities about certain places to be revealing and helpful. It was our first trip to Chile and we couldn't have done it without this guide.

Hernando Cortes: ruthless, greedy, fearless and clever.......2002-04-29
"Hernando Cortes and the Conquest of Mexico" looks at one of the most famous explorers of the New World whose reputation has suffered over the years because of his destruction of the Aztecs (see Neil Young's song "Cortes and the Killer). Author Gina De Aneglis points out that like many of the other Spanish conquistadors, Cortes was brutal in his treatment of the natives, but that he was also a fearless general and a brave explorer. Cortes was one of numerous soldiers sent by the Spanish to explore unknown lands after the discovery of the New World by Columbus in 1492. De Angelis relates how Cortes first arrived in the New World as a teenager, fighting against natives on Hispaniola and Cuba. He later convinced the king to let him explore the Yucatan peninsula, the area that is now Mexico. With a few hundred soldiers Cortes invaded the mighty Aztec empire, captured the emperor Montezuma, and conquered the natives. Whatever young readers may end up thinking about Cortes as a human being, he clearly helped shape the Mexico of today. Teachers and students can deal with questions of whether he should be judged by the standards of his own time or our own.
This book includes native artwork of Aztec rituals and the arrival of the Spaniards, as well as European paintings of other events described. You will find a Chronology from the founding of Tenochtitlan in 1325 to the death of Cortes in 1566, along with a Glossary, list of Further Reading, and Index. This book is part of the Explorers of the World series, which has 30 titles focusing on explorers from Marco Polo and the Vikings to Sir Edmund Hilary and the Apollo Astronauts.
A Century of Explorers.......2000-04-03
If you like this book of inquires then read Morgan Freeman, Black American Of Achievement by Gina Deangelis. It explains about Morgan Freeman and his times. This book shows his importance and how he evolve in life. What he stands for and so forth. This is also a very good Black History book. There is also a move out from this book and i belive the book would be good in a mini series about his life.

Product Description
The Spanish explorer Hernando Cortés is a very controversial figure. To some people, he was heroic. Even though he was greatly outnumbered, he was able to defeat the Aztec Emperor Montezuma and conquer the Aztec empire because of his personal courage and leadership abilities. The Aztec empire was centered in modern-day Mexico. Its religion was based on human sacrifice. Cortés replaced it with Christianity. To others, including many Mexicans, he was a villain because he destroyed the Aztecs way of life. They believed he was a cruel man. He was also a symbol of Spanish domination. When Mexico became independent from Spain in 1821, its people tried to remove their memories of him. Either way, one thing is certain. Hernando Cortés was one of the most important figures in the history of the New World.

Book Description
After thirty years of painstaking research, Juan Miralles has distilled the most reliable firsthand accounts and rejected all the doubtful elements to present this definitive biography, a thorough and critical portrait of the historical Hernán Cortés, the man who created Mexico.

Customer Reviews:
Whet my appetite..........2002-06-13
This is a beautiful book. The book is not comprehensive, but I don't believe it intends to be. I appreciate how the author visually and lyrically introduces vocabulary and ideas through his own experiences. I now want to know more. I will continue to refer back to this book as I search for more knowledge and as I pursue my arts (architecture, as well as art). I was enlightened, as well as astonished. I'd like to keep that feeling.
A pale facsimile of the real thing.......2000-10-05
This book only skims the surface of wabi-sabi, dealing in the tired truisms of the "cherry blossoms in the spring" type and the cheap exoticism that often plagues Western writing about Japanese aesthetics.
As a student of Japanese culture, I bought this book and was very disappointed. You're not missing anything--skip it.
nothing special, except the dull photos.......2000-06-08
This book is derivative and enraptured with cliche. The photos look like cheap snapshots gussied up for placement in a rather nice design. But the elegance of the overall production is the exact antithesis of the the REAL wabi sabi, so expertly revealed in that other book. They could have named this anything, and you wonder if the title was chosen to do anything but ride on the other author's achievement. I'd ignore this one.
The lesser Wabi-Sabi.......2000-05-03
How can two books with virtually the same title be so different? I bought both books that Amazon lists with "wabi" and "sabi" in the titles. The other book is highly informative, imaginative, and profoundly artful in the manner of wabi-sabi. WABI SABI: A NEW LOOK AT JAPANESE DESIGN, however, would be more accurately titled "WABI SABI LITE." It is a regurgitation of all the tired cliches about Japanese design and culture I have come to loathe rereading. Sorry. I'd let this one pass.
