Book Description
This exciting volume offers a unique approach to respiratory physiology, examining the subject based upon fundamental biological, chemical, and physical principles. At each step, the book asks Does it make sense? This allows readers to understand not only how gas exchange works, but why, scientifically and logically, gas exchange must work as it does. This approach leads to important practical benefits, including: * A rational understanding of the bases of both physiological acclimation and respiratory theraputics. * Insight into what to expect when organisms respond to environmental or pathological challenges. * Improved ability to synthesize and explore relationships between what may otherwise seem to be unrelated functions. The insight into respiratory physiology provided by this important text has applications to a broad range of disciplines. Health professionals will find their ability to care for patients enhanced by their improved understanding of the functioning of gas exchange in the respiratory system. In addition, the book's thorough coverage provides direction for zoologists and physiologists interested in the development and function of animal respiratory systems.

getting down to first principles.......1999-01-15
This book is a MUST-HAVE for medical students seeking a text without the "fluff" that fully explores gas exchange in language we can all understand. Those who read this text will be anxiously awaiting the second edition.

Customer Reviews:
One Of The Top Guides For London.......2005-12-19
There are many guides to London. From what I can see there are two good general guidebooks. These are the Eyewitness Travel (DK) guide which is the one that I personally prefer or Lonely Planet (the present book). These two books are both just around 500 pages and both are tremendous efforts. They are well balanced guides with lots of photos, maps, history, etc. Both are clearly 5 star guides.
I would rate both (and DK Eyewitness Travel and Lonely Planet) head and shoulders ahead of Frommers or similar books that are less well balanced, i.e.; fewer photos. Overall, the DK guide has better photos and visuals. In fact I am amazed every time I pick up and read that DK guide with the quality of the photos and technical detail. Those graphics make for a better souvenir so it gets the nod as the better book, but it is a close call.
The city has lots of fun things to see and do but time is usually limited and it is expensive - so these guides are good investments. This book is well balanced and like the DK guide it pulls a lot of things together such as history and culture, food, towns and lots of interesting information on London. The book brings it all to life with just magnificent photos and maps, including subway maps.
I have one suggestion, and that is to buy the guide before planning your trip. The guide has lots of information and tips on places to see.
Either case this is an excellent buy. 5 stars.
outdated.......2005-09-14
The lonely planet london had some good walking tours, but for the most part, terribly out-dated in terms of prices for museums/attractions and also many stores/restaurants/internet spots have since closed. The maps are decent.
Lonely in London........2005-01-09
I swear by the Lonely Planet travel guides, and this one is no exception. While planning my recent trip to London, I discovered two first-rate London guidebooks, this one, and Rick Steves' London 2005 (which I prefer of the two). The LP guide offers detailed maps in the back of the book, including a tube map. It also enabled me to find affordable hotel accomodations in the otherwise expensive Hyde Park area. LP's guide provides an excellent orientation of the city's culture, architecture, and history, and features several worthwhile walking tours through the Soho, South Bank, Fleet Street and central city areas of London. London is among the ultimate European travel destinations, and first-time visitors will need no more than this guide to explore the city's pubs, its fascinating streets and neighborhoods, and its many, great art museums.

You're going to LOVE BRITAIN! .......2004-09-23
I've spent a year in England and have made >30 visits all together.
Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
Perfect for student traveling.......2004-09-17
I would recommend this book to any student or individual who is traveling to London and cannot afford to live in the most expensive sections of London that Frommer's offers. I loved this book. I took it everywhere I went in London and never got losted. I had this book more often than I had my passport. I even got Jack Black's autograph in this book when he came for his movie premiere. If you are going to London, you must pick up this book first. It is the only thing you will need. There are maps inside and everything you will need to live and commute in London. This was my first Lonely Planet and would recommend it to anyone interested in really travelling London. If you are going that way, tell everyone hello for me in the Museum Tavern, which is where Karl Marx took his study breaks during the writing of the Communist Manifesto.

If you're keen on delving into Hawaiian culture and history, you'll do well with the Moon Handbooks' guide to the Big Island (which also includes a chapter on Hawaii Volcanoes National Park). Moon offers an amazingly thorough look at this Polynesian island--from the arrival of the first settlers to Captain James Cook's landing, all the way up to Pearl Harbor and statehood in 1959. The body of the book discusses what to do and see, and where to stay and eat in the major tourist areas, including Kona (with its vast coffee plantations and palm-studded beaches), Hilo (with lush botanical gardens), and Puna (rich in lava fields spewed from the still-active Kilauea Volcano). Throughout, you'll find descriptions of Hawaiian hallmarks (hula dances, leis, luaus) as well as a chapter on sports and recreation, including where to hike, canoe, snorkel, surf--even ski (Mauna Kea is snow-capped in winter). The "Flora & Fauna" chapter identifies indigenous animals such as the Hawaiian thrush and the endangered monk seal. There are also plenty of tips to make your trip as seamless as possible, from a list of common Hawaiian words (think lots of vowels) to favorite tropical drinks such as the Chi Chi (vodka with pineapple juice and coconut syrup). --Jill Fergus

What You Want In a Guidebook.......2007-02-09
Obviously, from the reviews here, people want/expect different things from their guidebooks but my wife and I have done a lot of traveling to a lot of places and found this one of the best we've ever used.
This book covers everything a traveler could need -- where to stay, where to eat, where to shop; and whatever your taste in activities, from museums to water sports, from golf to horticulture, it's well covered here, with full details of the where, the when, the phone number, and any little quirky info like "avoid Tuesdays," or "be aware of the riptides." (Is there anybody out there who WOULDN'T want to know there are riptides?)
It's also very comprehensive -- not too surprising, of course, when it only has to cover a relatively small island - some books this size cover a whole country!
A compact, information-laden guide that no traveler to Hawai'i's Big Island should be without........2006-12-09
Big Island of Hawai'i Including Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is the Moon Handbooks guide for tourists and travelers, and like all books in the Moon series, is packed cover to cover with absolutely everything one needs to know to make the most of a Hawai'i vacation or business trip. Focusing specifically on Hawai'i's Big Island rather than the rest of the chain, chapters cover Kona, South Kohala, North Kohala, The Saddle Road, Hamakua Coast, Hilo, Puna, and Ka'u and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. From tips for getting around to health and safety advice to extensive directions, maps, black-and-white photographs, recommended hotels, hours for ideal eateries and gift shops, sports and recreation facilities, and much more, Big Island of Hawai'i is a compact, information-laden guide that no traveler to Hawai'i's Big Island should be without.
The Best of the Best.......2006-09-23
I have found on 3 previous trips to the Big Island, in recent years that, Robert Nilsen's "Moon Big Island of Hawai'i" is vastly superior and is
"The Best of the Best" when comparing the many others that are on the
market, including some well known ones. This being the 3rd updated edition that we have used, we find it to be very up to date and that is sometimes very hard to do, when business's seem to change overnight, at times on the Big Island. His writing skills allow for easy reading
and enjoyment, while showing his knowledge and love for the Big Island. Mr Nilson takes pride in the work that he does and when there seems to be an issue, with one of his recommendations, he takes the time to acknowledge your etter and sees to it that, if the issue is true, his recommendation will change in the next updated edition.
My recommendation: This is a needed book on any venture to the Big Island of Hawai'i, whether your 1st, your 10th or more, as it is "The Best of the Best!!!!" You will find it well worn, upon your return, and may have friends and family wanting to borrow it for their trip,as well!
Heavy.......2003-10-30
I like a guidebook with lots of pictures and detailed maps and this one lacks both. Knowing exactly where I am when I'm driving is probably my number one necessity. For armchair traveling and tourists with time to read this 400 page book provides interesting background.
For those who really want to know Hawaii.......2000-08-30
This book was a gift to me. I would never have purchased such a stodgy looking guide if I saw it in the bookstore. I actually got the larger Hawaii Handbook covering all of the Hawaiian islands. This book is the Big Island section of that book and includes comprehensive general Hawaiian island information as well. If someone is planning a multiple island trip they should go for the bigger book. Even if you are not going to Hawaii but want to know about Hawaii get this one. I devoured this book during the long flight to Hawaii and must say it was by far the very best travel guide that I have ever read and used to any destination. (And I have read them all.) It is so comprehensive and the writing is so well done that reading all of the information was almost like reading a page turner novel for me. I could not get enough. Once we were in Hawaii we found this guide totally indispensible. We traveled with a few other nice guides but, with all of their color photograpy and fancy maps, eventually this one was the only one we felt was worthwhile. (You can get all the maps you will ever need once you get there.) After touring extensively I read it with even more interest on the long flight home. We plan to return to tour just the Big Island and this is the one we will bring. It is not glitzy it is the real thing. Enjoy.
Book Description
Where Vacations Meet Adventures! First, Hidden Big Island of Hawaii reviews the destination’s famed attractions. Then (more importantly!) it invites the reader to go further to “Hidden” spots other guides overlook, including small inns and local restaurants. The guide also focuses on outdoor adventures with detailed information on beaches, parks and outdoor activities. Special traveler-friendly features include hidden spots, author’s favorite picks, getaway itineraries, driving and walking tours, websites and e-mail addresses, and multiple scaled maps that zoom in on each area. Hidden Big Island of Hawaii leads to tropical gardens in Hilo, upcountry hiking in Waimea, and diving spots along the Kona coast. The author offers recommendations and opinionated reviews for over 100 restaurants and over 70 hotels. This updated edition includes 11 maps.
Customer Reviews:
Dull and low on information.......2007-08-08
I recently took this book on a trip to the Big Island. While it was definitely better than not having a guidebook at all, this book provides only basic information. In fact, we referred to the free magazines from the rental car company at least as much as we referred to this book. The writing style is dull, and the book is not organized in a way that makes it easy to find information. Zero photographs other than the one on the cover. In addition, I found some of the recommended restaurants less than satisfactory. If I had a suggestion for the publishers of this book, it would be to add some specific discussion on seeing the lava flows. I think a lot of the visitors to the big island are there because they want to see the lava, but it's not always possible. When we were there, the volcano wasn't doing much and there was nothing to see. A month or so later, they had such a big flow that the Park Service had to shut down part of the park. Seeing the lava is a hit and miss thing, as I found out. I still enjoyed the island immensely, but only after adjusting my expectations.
Lightweight.......2004-05-04
I've used the Hidden series before and liked them but this one is not up to speed. I found the pages to be light on information and the places that they recommended were where all the tourists go. In other words, "Hidden" was misleading. Better books are on the market.
Book Description
When Honolulu police officer Katrina Ogden lands an assignment at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, her working vacation turns ugly as she is caught between two forces: murder and Madame Pele, Goddess of the Volcano. In a race against time, she struggles to save lives before the volcano's eruption sweeps them away.

Prt of a compelling series with a romantic backdrop.......2004-01-15
Victoria Heckman attended a Reserve Police Academy and served as a patrol office for two years in southern California. She briefly considered joining the Honolulu Police Department, but opted out, although she maintains close ties. She has written the K.O.'d in Hawai'i series, featuring the lovely backdrop of the Hawaiian islands.
Katrina Ogden is known as "K.O.," and in this story she is arriving from the Honolulu Police Department for a combination rest and training activity for the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. She is there because, with recent drug activity, the park employees need additional training to deal with problems in the park. Unbeknownst to K.O., there's been a murder, and it won't be long before she is up to her eyeballs in murder and volcanic activity:
"K.O. trembled, and forced herself upright. He's a copy, she told herself. I have to. Do I really? What is my obligation here? Aid a fellow officer in trouble. Capture a criminal. At the very least, it's attempted murder now, since that woman shot at him. Would I even hesitate if this were a dark alley in Waikiki? Or an abandoned warehouse in Iwilei? Not for a second. She blinked, and found she was halfway down the shield, picking her way between two large rivers. She stepped cautiously, afraid of crashing through a think crust and into boiling lava a hundred feet deep."
There is something about a river of lava that is compelling in and of itself. Heckman does a nice job of combining the most sinister of elements: a drug cartel; an apparently dirty cop; a huge volcanic eruption; and a good cop who badly needs a rest to form an interesting and exciting tale of right and evil. To add even more flavor to the mix, K.O. is constantly haunted by images of sacrifice on the edges of the lava pits, plus ominous warnings from a teenage diabetic who happens to be on hand for all the fun.
All in all, K.O. is an interesting, well rounded character the reader will groan for, cheer for, and finally...get a little exasperated with as she almost blows it with her perfect Hawaiian gentleman. K.O.'D IN THE VOLCANO is part of a compelling series with a romantic backdrop.

A beautiful and exciting thriller.......2003-03-29
Katrina "KO" Ogden is happy to be assigned as a training officer for park rangers at the Big Island's Volcanoes National Park while she recovers from injuries caused by a previous case. A Honolulu Police Department officer who is transferring from Records to Evidence, this new assignment is a welcome break that will also provide her time to explore her growing relationship with a old friend. What she doesn't expect to find are hostilities from the park rangers who don't want an outsider amongst them, an increase of violence resulting from drugs on the park, and murder.
KO's peace is further disturbed by having to bunk down with a gaggle of kids on a Diabetes camp, one of whom seems to have almost prophetic powers into KO's life. While KO attempts to deal with the tensions among the rangers and a possible volcano eruption another set of events concerning an elaborate marijuana ring will intrude and have lasting impact on her life.
This is a wonderful mystery that successfully illustrates the beauty, power, and danger living in Hawaii's volcanoes. KO is a delightful character, confident with her professional skills yet still insecure in her personal life. The plot moves along quickly with events all tying together in a satisfying and explosive conclusion. Heckman's second mystery in the KO series is even better than the first, and I can't wait for the third, KO'D IN HAWAIIAN SOVEREIGNTY.

Book Description
"There's virtually nothing that can stop or limit Nofrontiere" is one of the slogans found in this glorious manifesto-like new book introducing Europe's best-known multimedia designers.
The book is itself a monumental leap in the evolution of design, brazenly challenging the limits of book design in a no-holds-barred spirit. Nofrontiere takes us through the challenges of the new technology and extends the dialogue further.
Nofrontiere Operating System is devoted to the work of the Nofrontiere Design Studio in Vienna and its founders Andrea Steinfl and Alexander Szadeczky. Works shown include the winning design for the Lego international competition, multimedia design for the study of Freud's dream theory, a CD for the Austrian National Bank and Austrian TV, as well as the product catalogs from snowboards to furniture.
Customer Reviews:
A nice portfolio.......2000-10-30
The book itself is a portfolio with lots of Nofrontiere works, some fine texts about each work (sometimes even funny) and sketches/roughs that were used in the process. In some aspects, it looks a lot with The Attik's "Noise" book, only that it is not so good. I wouldn't call it a "must-have" item, not because it's "bad" (which it surely isn't), but because this is merely a showcase of their works.
The 3D stuff (little) is what I liked less, I've seen way much better in many places to find that attractive. But it's the creative process that matters, and Nofrontiere is surely one of that companies that just "have" this touch. Their work is nice, and their portfolio is eyecandy to the eyes. But no more than this.
Perfect........1998-12-14
In this book all the designs that you can find are a perfect combination of colors, great ideas, textures, the use with typographies, photos but overcoat the use of 3-D ( Mr. V is the best). A great book. If you want to be considerer a graphic designer you must have this book, absolute necessity.
