4 out of 5 stars Pacific Coast Fern Finder.......2000-05-14

There are many books and field guides, but with most they are too broad and they do not allow for easy identification. The Pacific Coast Fern Finder solves the problem of having a huge choice and a needle in the hay stack job. The book presents a step-by-step question and answer format that , depending on each of your answers after observing the plant , sends you to a new page that gives more indepth questions, constantly drilling down the choices till you arrive at the plants name. This process make the identification clear and easy while at the same time developing the readers mind to deductive thinking and teaches you how to examine plants like a scientist. It is a great book for those who want to find out a plants name without the hassle of the huge guides that make you do a lot of dead end leg work. The other plus of the book is that it is compact and pocket sized for easy travel. I would highly recommen this book.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful but of less than average construction........2007-02-07

My fiance and i were fortunate enough to holiday in the Cooks for 2 weeks in January 07. In the lead up to our trip i purchased this guide and studied it carefully. All the sections were well written and comprehensive. The history and environment section made for interesting background reading and helped to get an idea of life back in the old days as well as the current situation.
The section dealing with Rarotonga and its capital Avarua, as a whole was useful and the information (sights, accomodation, where to eat/drink and shop, other amenities) for the most part (95%) accurate - even prices more or less. We did a daytrip to Aitutaki and that section was also quite good. There were also sections on all the other Southern & Northern group islands but i cannot comment as we did not go to any of these. Still made interesting reading though. The maps were also accurate and well detailed.
One thing i would disagree with is attemting to do the main cross island hike on your own. It is possible but there are no signposts, and the trail itself is quite difficult to find and follow in places, not to mention quite treacherous and hard going in the wet season. We went with Pa a local guide and it was a wise decision as many people have been injured or worse attempting this hike.
Other than this, my main gripe is with actual construction of this book. The plastic coating on the cover started to peel soon after purchase and the pages are starting to come loose from the spine. All this without any heavy duty wear and tear. I think Lonely Planet need to increase their quality control and improve the construction of their guides so that they do stand up to more rigorous use, after all that's what they are for.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST read if you are heading for the Cooks!.......2003-10-29

We just got back from a two week exploration of the Cooks and found this book VERY helpful. The Cooks will quickly convince you that if you've only been to Hawaii, you've only gone half way to Heaven!

Unfortunately, we required hospital services (because of tainted food), and this book over simplifies issues of needed medical care. (Details that should be included in EVERY travel guide!)

Naturally, most prices quoted are actually higher, but that's just dealing with reality.

We observed "newbies" arriving without this book, and therefore, without a clue of where to go or what to do.
FOUR Stars because this book was so valuable, but as with most, there is room for improvement.

5 out of 5 stars lonely planet, raro and cook islands.......2003-10-23

If you are headed out to the Cook Islands (absolutely fabulous, beautiful place to visit), you MUST bring this book with you. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad, unfortunately out of date.......2003-06-13

Having recently returned from the Cook Islands, I cannot highly recommend this book. While the history and culture sections are interesting, the lodging and shopping/restaurants sections leave a lot to be desired. Most of the businesses mentioned have either gone out of business or changed hands. This is especially true on Aitutaki, where only one of the businesses recommended was still in its present form! As another reader recommended, the book does not sufficiently cover home rentals which are a great way to stay on these islands for a reasonable amount (and most can be viewed and reserved on the internet!). David Stanley's Moon Handbooks South Pacific guide is a much better choice--it is more up to date and covers all the major South Pacific islands for almost the same amount of money.

5 out of 5 stars Dreaming of a Pacific Island..........2001-06-15

I became interested in the Cook Islands after recently readingTom Neale's book: An Island to Myself (also published as An Island to Oneself), in which he describes his solitary life on the tiny island of Suvarov (Suwarrow) in the South Pacific Cook Islands. More inspiritation came from Florence Frisbie's book, Miss Ulysses of Puka Puka, written about 1947 about her life in these islands. These books enchanted me and made me start considering a possible trip to the Cook Islands, so I picked up "Rarotonga & the Cook Islands". It's a very slender book, but has all the information I was looking for, in particular regarding lodging. Maps and descriptions of the different areas of Rarotonga are helpful in deciding what side of the island appeals to one's taste in beaches, privacy, and comfort. Rarotonga is the most featured island, with the most facilities for tourists. The other islands are more difficult to reach, but the book explains ways to get to the other islands, if so desired.

There doesn't seem to be a lot to do on these small islands other than biking, swimming, hiking, and eating, and this may be exactly what appeals to some. I wasn't convinced to go though, because I can do these same things more cheaply in lovely parts of Mexico; yet I would go if I could, if only to meet Florence (Johnnie) Frisbie, who I understand still lives there.

3 out of 5 stars Tons of Info on the Cook Islands.......2000-06-20

For the first timer, this guide is a great introduction to the Rarotonga and the Cook Islands. It is very thorough and has details about shopping, places to visit, popular tours, places to stay, and eat. Not only does the guide provide information about the main island of Rarotonga, but also include bits on the outer islands, which are very popular to visit. I really enjoyed reading up on Rarotonga and felt this book provided a good orientation of Rarotonga and things to see and do. However, some of the information is outdated. It was published in 1996. Because Rarotonga is such a popular tourists destination things are constantly changing, for example taking the boat (ferry) to Aitutaki was quoted as an inexpensive way to visit this tourist hot spot. However, this service is no longer provided. Many of the shops noted in the book, were no longer open or a detailed description of how to find them was not provided. Locals were very helpful in providing the most recent information. There was not a lot of detail about accomodations in summer homes. This proved to be a very economic way of staying inthe Cooks. it could be improved with more thorough contact information. Overall for the first time visitor, this guide was very useful as far as getting an overall "feeling" or what Rarotonga is like.

            5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2007-07-20

I always enjoy when this book comes out. It is always chock full of logos that encompass many different design styles by some of the leading design firms in the country. After looking through this, I feel the design juices flowing and inspiration comes easy.

4 out of 5 stars quantity, not quality.......2007-07-10

I recently ordered this book for our advertising agency. At a previous job, I had often used the first Big Book of Logos (white background on cover) as a reference for inspiration and looked forward to having a similar resource at this job. I ordered version 4 since I had so thoroughly used version 1 and wanted to see some new logos. Indeed, it turned out to be a big, fat book of logos, very similar to version 1. However, I was disappointed by the lackluster quality of some of the work included. This may be due in part to my eye as a designer improving since I was first dazzled by version 1 freshly out of college, but I think the more likely explanation is that the overall logo quality of version 4 is inferior to version 1. That being said, it's still a great resource to look through to get the juices flowing and to find ideas for different treatments and I will likely continue to reference it often.

3 out of 5 stars Not that strong..........2006-10-29

I was actually really disappointed with this book. With as many good reviews as it got, I was very excited at the prospect of buying it. I (thankfully) went to the store to review it before purchasing. Yes, there are a lot of logos to glean ideas from, but most of the logos presented are weak and really could have been simplified or refined more. Two books of much stronger logos (which I bought instead of this) are Logos: From North to South America by Pedro Guitton, and LogoLounge: 2,000 International Identities by Leading Designers by Bill Gardner and Catharine Fishel.

            5 out of 5 stars Logo? Logo!.......2006-03-22

We can all use some inspiration, especially when it comes to logo design. If you are tired of your own doodles and your garbage can is starting to fill up with crumbled paper - look no further - David E. Carter's The Big Book of Logos 4 is the right vehicle to jumpstart your tired grey matter. If you are a designer or even the one who would hire a designer to create your logo, this book is a great source of inspiration. It features hundreds of examples from all walks of life and business, product and service. And since logos in many cases are used for more than just a business card and letterhead, the most interesting thing for me was, that the book is also interspersed with many real life product examples: logos come alive on package designs for energy drinks, soap, snacks, wine, vodka, shrimps, coffee, or you see them end up as billboards for bars, coffee houses and corporations, and we see examples where they cross over to merchandise and websites. It reminds us: know what you design for - logos have to be versatile and have to work for many media. Looking through this book, I'm often fascinated by the smart, effective and often simple solutions a designer has come up with and yet everybody who designs logos knows that we can sometimes be so close but walk in circles to get "It" right. That's when The Big Book of Logos 4 comes in handy. It gives our spent visual juices some greatly needed visual oasis. Get lost, be overwhelmed, by the cheer amount of logos and let them revive your senses. Feel inspired, stimulated and finally motivated. If you are like me, you may be surprised to find yourself think "I can do that!" - and then get that crumbled paper back out of the garbage!

            5 out of 5 stars Great Gift.......2006-02-15

I got this book as a Valentine's Gift! And I'm thrilled because I've been wanting it for a while. It has one of my logos published in it! Yeah! (you should buy it!)

Like any other logo book, it provides all sorts of great inspiration for your own creations. It's also quite sturdy and will hold well as a bookend to house all your other design books! :o)

4 out of 5 stars Great logos, shame about the book........2004-02-04

With 2500 logos, mostly eight to a page, well printed on good paper this book should have been a treasure. Instead with no obvious editorial input it ends up being frustrating. As far as I can see it is arranged by design studio output. It should have been arranged, I think, by style of logo, typographic, flat graphic, illustrative etc. The captions don't do the reader any favors either. Client and designer are listed but no dates or what sort of company the logo is for. This book seems very typical of David Carter's output, I have a copy of his 1988 'Logos of America's Largest Corporations', six hundred (nicely printed) marks with just the company name and city location, no designer names or dates.

As to the logos, with 2500 of them there has to be a lot of duds but that is only to be expected. The majority of them have been produced for small companies who feel they need some mark for local recognition and on this basis there are many neat solutions here. For example page 234 shows a capital D incorporating a fork and spoon, a clever idea and surely just what Dantes Restaurants Inc wanted. If the book was just going to show real clever stuff produced by super creative designer folk it would be pretty thin. For the money though I feel this is good value.

At the other extreme a logo book that I have enjoyed is Per Mollerup's 'Marks of Excellence' (ISBN 0714838381) a history of logos, beautifully designed and printed and here the logos are grouped according to their look, eyes, flags, globes, hearts etc. A brilliant survey.

1 out of 5 stars the worst design book i have ever spent $ on.......2003-11-14

Fellow buyers of design books on amazon this is the worst book i have ever purchsed . This book is a compilation of the most poorly designed trademarks. Please do not get this book!!! All the logos seem to have been haphazardly picked. If you insist on getting this book, you should definately check it out at a book store first because that will change your mind faster than roaches scurrying away from light.

5 out of 5 stars Logo ideas for everyone - designers to small businesses........2003-08-03

This book has 2,500 of the best logos done by designers from all across America and nothing else. This book was put together so it could become a compendium of logos that one can use to see different styles and techniques and jump start their own creative juices. The book is full color and the only way to navigate the book is through the Index. There is no table of contents. Each page has a few logos with credit given to each the designers at the bottom of the page in very small print.

Every few pages, there is a full page devoted to just one company logo. But the cool part is that this full page has pictures of the logo in action - whether it is on the product packaging, bill board, or store front sign. This is very helpful as it gives you a context to judge the power of the logo. Just a graphics image against a white page background means you need to use your imagination trying to picture how the logo's going to look in its intended use.

Whether you are a designer or a small business owner that wants to get a logo done through a designer, this book is an invaluable tool. If you are a designer, you can use it to get your creative juices to flow or just admire the work done by others for inspirational reasons. If you are a small business owner, you can use it to work with your logo designer. You can point out some of the logos and just say 'I like these' and that gives the designer a place to start in creating your logo. This avoids a lot of wasted work as you are both trying to figure out what you like and what best represents your business image.

When I first started doing research on good logo design books, I was confused by the number of logo books by this author. The names are a little misleading when you try to figure out which one is the more recent version. I finally decided to use the publication date for this purpose and this book happens to be the latest (published in May 2003). We recently started offering Corporate Identity Management services to small businesses through our company and we are finding that this book is an invaluable tool in communicating with our clients. Especially if our clients are in another city, we just ask them to get a copy of this book before starting the project.

Even if you aren't a designer or someone looking for design services, this book is still fun to flip through if you are the creative type. The price is just phenomenally low for something of this high quality (I am trying to imagine the price of printing along considering it's full color). If you have to even remotely work with logos, just get the book. It's a decision that I haven't regretted even for a second. Have fun!

4 out of 5 stars Great book despite poor editing.......2002-02-28

This is a great inspirational book for logo designers! I find it to be a valuable addition to my design library. The only criticism I have is that this book was not carefully edited. There are low-resolution logos peppered throughout and logo placement does not always match logo descriptions. If you can get past this small speed bump, you have an excellent book.

3 out of 5 stars A Broad-based Logo Book That Should Have Been Better.......2002-01-11

This book is unique, among the many logo books I have owned or seen, for including a higher percentage of "retail" branding logos alongside the usual complement of arty and edgy graphic design identity marks. This upsets some readers who expect all edge, no cheese. But as I see it, one of the principle values of this book is supporting you when you are called back from Planet Ego to Planet Earth from time to time, to help you when you are stumped over that P.O.P. type treatment or retail branding logo that you need by tomorrow noon.

On another note, it does have some logos that are, as someone here says, ten years old, that have been in all the annuals several times already. I, too, do wish the entries were all marked by date. And further, I would love to have a collection of this scope culled from work I know to be 5 years old or less. It almost seems like a cheat to pump up the number of logos included in a non-history-focused volume by dipping back a decade.

All in all, The Big Book of Logos is a nice addition to the library of either ad agency or design house, while it doesn't at all replace the Graphis logo annuals or anything of that caliber.

            Book Description

David E. Carter's "Big Book of Logos" series is nothing less than an international phenomenon.

For the first volume, David E. Carter chose 2,500 logos currently in use, and produced a major resource book for logo designers, an inspiring showcase of effective logo design from all over the world. The variety of styles and techniques covered the complete creative spectrum. The Big Book of Logos became one of the best-selling graphics books of all time, the first best resource to consult when devising a new logo.

Soon after, came The New Big Book of Logos featuring another 2,500 designs, and, after that, The Big Book of Logos 3, which is now available here, for the first time in an affordable paperback edition. Logo designers are always looking for sources of inspiration, wanting to see "what's new" and this book has it all. Every logo designer should have this on the shelf for frequent use, and the new paperback format (and pricing!) will ensure that The Big Book of Logos 3 will take its place alongside the series' earlier volumes as an indispensable reference for every designer.

5 out of 5 stars Time to design a new logo.......2002-10-22

Just got my copy of Big Book of Logos 3 and I'm putting it to use already. I was just asked to design a logo and find this book a useful mind dump of 2,500 logos to get my brain cells working. My David Carter book collection has grown over the years and I find them a good place to start whenever I'm kicking off a new design project.

5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Catalog Filled With Design Ideas and Concepts.......2002-03-04

David E. Carter has published shelves full of books on design and creative applications. The New Big Book of Logos is a valuable addition to anyone's swipe file. If you're looking for yet another array of by-gone days in corporate identity, then this is NOT the book for your money. Frankly, I'm tired of books filled with thoroughly worn-out antique icons (clip art) of corporate entities. This book and it's predecessor are fresh and valuable to the creative mind for the wealth of ideas taken from unknown and uncommon identities. For the purpose of looking at others' work as something to analyze, pull-apart, and re-assemble into something new and completely different, this book is a gold mine of creative opportunities. Your money is well-spent on anything David E. Carter produces.

            4 out of 5 stars ShoeShineBoy.......2002-02-28

I don't know why anyone would need to buy another logo book after buying this one. It's chock-full of logos. Certainly, they are not all gems...but there's enough good ideas in there to get your own brain stimulated.

In reference to the guy who was disappointed in this book because it didn't have recognizable, big brand logos (Shell, McDonalds, etc..) my question is "why would you want that?" Why would you want a book filled with marks everyone knows so well that they see them in their sleep. Give me fresh stuff! Stuff I haven't seen! And, yes, this means stuff from big markets as well as small. Why is a logo for a small maket any less valid? Why does distribution suddenly equal rellevancy? Maybe you should go back to design school to figure this out.

1 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Repetitive, Cheap and Dated Clip Art.......2001-11-16

This could have has SO much potential - it could have dealt with famous brands in the last 100+years such as Shell, BP, Bell, AT&T, IBM, Coke, Pepsi, Sony, Audi, BMW, McDonalds, Procter and Gamble, Microsoft, etc etc - there are so many famous and excellent brands. And they are International we all know them, but it would be nice to have a book covering them all and some more obscure ones.

But this book isn't in that league at all. This is the big book of early 90's clip art. Most of the designs are horribly dated, with sickly pastel colours, overly complex motifs etc. They are all much the same and certainly don't stand out on the page.

Obviously they are all Americentric, but worse they are all small-town Americentric. The cutesy clip art for the 10th Anniverary Snowy Creek Cub Spelling Bee, or Grand Street, Middletown, Nowheresville 3rd Annual Street Parade and the like have no value or merit outside of that institution. And that goes for 90% of the clip art...sorry logos. The work on offer is wholly unprofessional and bland. Managing to fill 400 odd pages with such mediocre work is quite remarkable.

After having read through this book I opted for How to Design Logos, Symbols and Icons - at least it had some quality, recognisable brands in it.

5 out of 5 stars Thre's inspiration here for EVERY logo designer........2000-11-18

OK. You're trying to come up with a logo design for your new client. You're stuck. What do you do? If you're lucky, you have this book handy, and you can flip through nearly 400 pages and about 2,500 logo designs from creatives all over the world. Suddnely, you see something you like. You don't copy it, but you get an idea from what you just saw. That's why you buy books like this. Ideas "spring" from other ideas.

Will you love every logo in this book? Of course not. That's not its purpose. Diferent designers from all over the world have greatly varying styles. But one thing for sure, you'll see enough "great" work in here to lift you to new heights of creativity. (And guess what, much of the stuff that you think is "so-so," others will think is "great." That's what makes life interesting. Quite simply, if you design logos, you should have this book on your reference shelf.

2 out of 5 stars Inspiration for mediocrity........2000-11-15

I bought this book the same day I bought the beautifully-bound "Trademarks designed by Chermayeff & Geismar" (Princeton Architectural Press). I plan to use them both in a presentation to show what 40 years of good, solid design can do versus a Big Book of Hack. This is indeed a big book, but when David E. Carter refers to these logos as "great" he is really deceiving the growing designers in his audience. And when he goes so far as "To paraphrase W.P. Kinsella, 'Publish it and they will buy.'" his intentions become frighteningly transparent. If you truly want to be inspired, learn from the legends. For the same amount of money you can own the Chermayeff & Geismar book. I gave it two stars, but that's mostly for effort.
