Customer Reviews:
Wildflower identification.......2007-06-11
I purchased this book as a compation to Wildflowers of Arkansas by Carl Hunter. I especially like the way this book is arranged; by the color of the flowers. This makes speedy field identification of flowers possible. I also like the quality of the photographs.
Good book for the flowers of the Ozarks.......2006-06-12
Found this book to be pretty good. Missing some of the flowers that I have found but handles most and the pictures and descriptions are good for someone who just wants to know what this flowers is.
A GREAT GUIDE - HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE.......2005-11-23
I have quite a number of books in my library pertaining to this subject. As an amateur photographer who specializes in flowers, I found this book invaluable for identification purposes as well as general, reliable knowledge of the subject plant being photographed. I carry this one with me in the field. The photographs are of very high quality, the book is well organized and, as far as I can tell, quite accurate in it's written descriptions. Through using this work and a couple of others, I have yet to run across a flowering plant here in Southern Missouri I was unable to identify. Recommend this one highly for those interested in the outdoors in general and flowering plants in particular. Wish we had more guides available of this quality
An excellent wildflower guide for the Ozark region.......2000-06-24
This attractive field guide describes 355 of the most frequently encountered wildflowers in the Ozarks, with photos for each. The Ozark region, shown in a map at the beginning of the book, covers approximately half of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas, and the northeast corner of Oklahoma, plus small areas in Kansas and Illinois.
The book is organized by color, and within each color group, the flowers are listed in order of approximate bloom time. In addition to the large photos, which are attractive and excellent for identification purposes, each entry provides a description of the physical characteristics of the plant, its habitat and range, and additional comments. The additional comments often include mention of similiar species to further aid in identification, and uses of the plant - by both humans and wildlife. Scientific names are up-to-date, and any previously used names are given.
I highly recommend this wildflower guide for use in the Ozark region and nearby areas.

Book Description
Covering approximately 50,000 square miles, the Ozarks is an upland region that spans four states--Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Illinois. In this beautifully illustrated, practical field guide, ecologist and botanist Thomas E. Hemmerly identifies more than 600 species of Ozark flowering plants. Ozark Wildflowers is the only book with full color photographs that covers all flowering plants of the Ozark region, including the Ouachita Mountains and Crowley's Ridge.
Hemmerly's primary focus is herbaceous plants, but he also includes an assortment of trees, shrubs, and woody vines with showy flowers. He conveniently organizes the species descriptions primarily by color and secondarily by the grand group--monocot or dicot--to which they belong. To further assist the reader, Hemmerly has included a glossary, an appendix of Ozark natural areas, a bibliography, and an index.
In addition to serving as an identification guide, Ozark Wildflowers features plants in the context of their environment and the regions where they occur. Hemmerly surveys other plants and animals that form communities with wildflowers and describes the soil, water, climate, and geology that influence Ozark ecology. The author also provides valuable information regarding any medical or ethnobotanical uses of the plants discussed.

Customer Reviews:
Old dogs can learn new tricks!.......2003-03-27
My husband travels to Los Angeles often for business
so he knows a lot about the city but I went for the
first time on his last trip. Since he was going to be
in meetings a lot I was worried about being on my own
so I bought this LA for Dummies guide and I'm so glad
I did! It was fun to read and so informative - it
even showed my husband the "LA expert" a few tricks.
I totally recommend it!
Great Book.......2003-03-27
We visited Los Angeles for the first time recently and were worried about what we had heard - that the city is a big sprawling mess, difficult to get around, etc. All of which is true, but this book made it less intimidating and actually a lot of fun. We took the author's advice to heart and wound up not feeling like dummies at all! This is a great book for the first time visitor.
Great for anyone visiting or living here.......2003-02-04
Totally agree about the locals comment. I just moved here from San Francisco and found great stuff in the book to make me feel like a native. Well-written, funny, entertaining, and a great resource for anyone visiting or living here!
Good For Locals Too.......2003-01-28
Some friends of mine from high school were coming to visit me here in LA and bought this book and had a great vacation, largely due to the terrific advice given in it. LA is a big sprawling mess of a city and the book helps narrow it down to a manageable size, especially for first time visitors. The surprising part was when I looked at the book while they were here - the stuff I learned on restaurants, attractions, and more that I never knew existed was amazing. It's opened my eyes to a whole new LA. Excellent all the way around.
Don't Leave Home Without It.......2003-01-27
This guidebook is witty, useful, and trail-breaking.
Mary Herczog takes Los Angeles and somehow makes it fun, organized, and not scary. What I liked best about it, she focuses on things most people miss, the sort of thing that you absolutely want to know about if you're going there without any kind of inside knowledge or friends in town, and she makes it all so fascinating and entertaining to read about. You can have a good read here even if you're not going to LA anytime in the foreseeable future.
Also she knows where all the really cool places are. And I know the title says "For Dummies" but obviously she's not, and she doesnt' treat her readers as dummies either. A terrific book.
Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Good General Guide.......2007-06-13
I found this book very beneficial on my recent trip to California. There were some great suggestions on off the path excursions that I would not have experienced had I not read about them in this book.
Major omissions and requires major editing.......2007-02-28
This book was a major disappointment for our trip. Consider the following typical omissions. San Jose is the 10th largest city in the entire country, and this book does NOT list a single hotel, restaurant, or attraction in the entire city. Stanford University and the town of Palo Alto similarly do not merit a single word in this book (although lots of silly tourist traps get multiple pages). Even when a town is covered, major hotels and attractions are missing. In my opinion, this book appeared to contain only "cut and paste" filler that one could get randomly from Internet sites.
Great travel guide for a vacation to California.......2002-10-31
Going to a place for the first time like California, we felt innundated by choices of where to go and what to do. This guide provided everything we needed...from tips on getting around to the best places to stay and eat. It didn't dumb down and really sent us to the perfect places.

San Fran for Dummies.......2007-06-27
This was a very easy, manageable read. It was extremely helpful in giving an overview of the city. It helped in navigating my trip!!!
The best guide to San Francisco!.......2005-10-14
Like all the "Dummies" travel guides, this book is the best! Written in a conversational style, the information is broken down in easy to read chunks. The recommendations were all spot-on (don't miss Dottie's True Blue Cafe!) and the maps were invaluable!
who was your fact checker?.......2003-09-28
I was disappointed overall with the transportation information, especially when the book gave incorrect directions to the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market. Above all, a guidebook should be accurate. This book definitely isn't.
Won't live home without it........2002-11-06
For the first time in a long time I have found a travel book that tells me exactly what I need to enjoy my vacation.
Paula Tevis deliverys the goods. No more flipping through page after page to search for information I need. Tevis has put together a book for the true road warrior. With clarity and brevity she brings San Fransico alive. Its obvious that Tevis knows this town inside and out.
great book.......2001-07-31
I bought this book back in February for a trip to San Francisco with my husband. I've been to San Francisco before around 13 years ago, but it was my husband's first trip to San Francisco. We carried the book with us all the time and the tips that it gave us were excellent, everything worked out great. For example, we did not rented a car and we made it all the way to the Golden gate bridge outside the city, following the book's tips to use the public bus. Another great tip, was to buy a three-day ticket to the MUNI (and it worked for bus, cable cars and electric cars). The restaurant suggestions for Chinatown and The Mission District were great. Good tips on how to avoid tourists traps. Great tips on planning itineraries and we felt like we saw all the most important attractions/sights in San Francisco. We hit a rainy afternoon and all we had to do was turn our book on the page on what to do if it's raining, great! I will defenetily buy books from these series again.
Have fun in your trip!

lighthouses.......2000-04-15
Being from North Carolina, it was delightful to see Cape Hatteras Light on the front end paper. Lighthouses are significant in NC and used as a unit theme by many teachers. This book shows not only lighthouses from around the country but presents the history and function of lighthouses suitable for pre-school and primary grade children. The print is large and the illustrations are concise.

Beyond the Garden Gate (Lighted Path Collection®)
ASIN: 0740742604 |
Book Description
The lighthouse remains one of civilization's strongest symbols. Through its image of light and strength are projected some of our most cherished values: hope, direction, steadfastness, duty, reliability, comfort, and home. Artist and author Thomas Kinkade knows this powerful symbolism well, and he captures it through his latest collection of paintings and inspiring thoughts, Beacons of Light.
". . .(E)ven in times of darkness and doubt, there are always bastions of hope and beacons of light to guide us," Mr. Kinkade writes. "For some, the light is powerful friendship, for others, a strong family, and for many, the guiding light comes from an unshakeable faith in God." These are the thoughts and sentiments that flow forth from Beacons of Light. Thomas Kinkade's majestic and light-filled paintings combine with inspiring quotations from many of history's greatest thinkers for memorable impact in this heartwarming volume.
Louisa May Alcott, T. S. Eliot, James Allen, Emily Brontë, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edith Wharton, and Thomas Kinkade himself are but a few of the many sources lending voice to Beacons of Light. Their effect-when matched with the artist's windswept seas, rugged architecture, and life-sustaining beams of light-is uplifting and inspirational. This keepsake book will be a warm and welcome addition for any Thomas Kinkade collector and will make the perfect gift for a variety of occasions.
Fifteen books now highlight Thomas Kinkade's work. Among them, The Light of Christmas has sold 30,000 copies; Family Traditions, 54,000 copies; and A Book of Joy, 67,000 copies.

Poorly Written, Full of Cliches.......2002-05-28
I couldn't get past the first two books in this set. The first seemed really dumb and contrived...we knew what was going to happen, the characters seemed flat, and it didn't really keep my attention. Book two further convinced me that this series was NOT worth reading and was more of the same mechanical writing and contrived plot. Disappointing. If you enjoy this type of book, I would recommend "Dakota" by Lauraine Snelling and "Colorado Wings" by Tracie Peterson.
Keepers Of The Light When Love Awaits........2001-03-25
My love of lighthouses drew me to this story. Though I was only able to read When Love Awaits, it's characters and description peak my curiosity to read the remaining story and the others in the book. If the other stories are similar to Lynn Coleman's work, then I will not be disappointed
A Charming Book Filled With Lighthouse Adventure!.......2001-02-26
This gem of a book tells four stories of women lighthouse keepers. The tapestry of characters with the blend in different writing styles was heightened by the beautiful backdrops.
In "When Love Awaits", a woman named Fiona falls for the persistant, Scottish Ian. In "A Beacon in the Storm", Amanda's one wish is to remain the lighthouse keeper - until she becomes sidetracked. With "Whispers Across the Blue" one feels the emotions of lovesick Jule praying for her fiancee who is out to sea. Lastly, in "A Time to Love", Eden has given up on love- but love has not given up on her.
A delightful, cozy read filled with inspiration and romance in the Lord's hand. This book is highly recommended!

stop stealing sheep.......2000-04-20
It's a fun little read. There's some interesting play with typography, although nothing particularly special. I was also told that those who had been quoted were not told that their words were being used in the book. But overall, it's a nice little book, a good compilation of quotes and enough to get me off my butt and go do my typography homework.
