An extraordinary work........2000-07-16

Comprehensive, beautifully illustrated with botanical drawings. A stunning work of scholarship, it is the ultimate reference for Hawaiian flora. Two large volumes. Intended for professionals, but amateurs like myself who persist (and use the glossary at the end of volume two) find it fascinating. Be sure to get the 1999 edition rather than the one from a decade earlier.

Neat pocket guide.......2001-08-14

This is just what the title promises: a pocket guide. As such it is high class, printed on glossy paper and profusely illustrated with high quality color pictures taken in the field. It takes the reader through the several vegetation zones of Hawai'i and presents the noteworthy plants, category by category. I can well imagine that this booklet will give visitors to Hawai'i much pleasure.

I am not so sure about this "reading beforehand" the other reviewer mentions: this will be a pretty brief read. Also too concise to serve as a field guide, with pictures that are awfully small. It really is a pocket guide only, but as such it is a gem.

The guide you should have.......2000-06-18

A truly superb guidebook; it is the one you should have to make sense of the profusion of exotic flora on the Islands. Other books show small selections of the trees and shrubs, with the result that the particular one in front of you is often omitted. Pratt has solved the problem for us; his book is comprehensive, beautiful, and easy to use. If you are planning a trip to the Islands, I recommend getting this book ahead of time. There is so much worth appreciating, it is time well spent getting oriented ahead of time. This guide is sure to become a classic.

Description:
Koa (Acacia koa A. Gray) is an endemic Hawaiian hardwood tree of high ecological, cultural and economic value. Despite its multiple values, research on the silviculture of koa has been minimal until recently because the preferred land-use was pasture for livestock, and logging was done mainly to facilitate and reduce the costs of conversion. This study examined growth response of selected potential crop trees to three treatments: (1) thinning of surrounding non-crop koa trees; (2) herbicide control of exotic grasses; and (3) herbicide grass control plus phosphorus (P) fertilization. These treatments were applied in a split-plot design to a 24-year-old stand of koa located at 1700-m elevation on the island of Hawai'i. Treatments had variable effects on stem diameter increment of crop trees, measured at breast height during the second and third years after treatments were imposed. Neither thinning alone nor grass control alone significantly increased stem diameter increment or leaf nutrient concentrations of crop trees, or soil nitrogen (N) or P availability. Grass control in combination with P fertilization in the unthinned plots increased stem increment by 50% compared with unthinned control subplots, but again not significantly so. In these unthinned plots, grass control plus P fertilization greatly increased soil P availability and foliar P, but not those of other nutrients. Thinning in combination with grass control and P fertilization significantly increased annual diameter increment at breast height by 118%. Crown vigor and live crown to total tree height ratio were correlated with crop tree growth rate, which emphasizes the need to select crop trees that have healthy, full crowns and maintain a high live crown ratio, in addition to straight, defect-free stems. Overall, our results suggest that the benefits of release thinning of intermediate age koa crop trees on similar sites can be enhanced when combined with weed control and fertilization. Although even greater benefits might be realized if treatments are imposed before crown vigor and live crown ratio decline, the timing will need to be balanced against higher cost of thinning denser stands and the ability of managers to identify potential crop trees.

There are only a handful of guidebooks about the Monterey Penninsula, and this is the best one. It is reliable, well-organized, and well-written. I have spent a while living in Monterey, and reference it often.

An excellent book that will serve many readers.......2000-04-11

This is an excellent book, not only for tourists and visitors to the Monterey Peninsula, but also for those considering relocating there (like me). I wanted a book about the region that describes the neighborhoods and towns in order to get a general feel for the area (information pertinent to those contemplating a move), and this book does just that. It is amazing how much information the authors have managed to jam into each page, and they have included a good deal of local history. The book is written in a witty, engaging, almost conversational style. Unlike many books of this genre, the blurbs about restaurants, inns, and everything else are written descriptively, rather than subjectively or from the authors' personal points of view (which may differ from the reader). In short, this is a very well-written book from two people who clearly love the peninsula on which they live!

Excellent resource and guide to a beautiful area........1999-10-17

This book was invaluable to our trip to this beautiful area. A very informative, fun read and a great way to learn about where to go, what to see, and what's available. I highly recommend this book.

This is another excellent volume in Heller's and Fili's extensive series covering art deco commercial art of the twenties and thirties. There are hundreds of beautiful images here, most in color, all very well-reproduced and on thick, high-quality pages. The images are well-chosen and are all striking in color and design, and are a great inspiration to the designer and a visual treat for the casual art-lover or pop culture enthusiast. Advertising and political and poster art were in a golden age during this period. The fairly sparse commentary is intelligent and provides context for the work documented here.

The Dutch of the seventeenth century were the first Europeans to specialize in marine art, and the achievements of the celebrated Dutch masters attest to the vitality and enduring appeal of Dutch marine art. Mirror of Empire is a catalogue that accompanies a traveling exhibition sponsored by The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. It is the first survey in English of Dutch marine art of the seventeenth century and includes many of the works of both Willem Van de Velde the Elder and Willem Van de Velde the Younger. The catalogue focuses on paintings, drawings, prints, sea charts and related cartographical material, while stressing the relationships among marine art and Dutch history, commerce and the tremendous significance of Dutch ship design. Mirror of Empire provides biographies of Dutch marine artists and contributors' essays on related topics that help explain the works of art within the larger historical context of their time period. These topics include the Dutch trade routes that assured the Dutch Republic its preeminent position in seventeenth century Europe, the design and function of Dutch ships, the iconography of Dutch marine paintings as found in Dutch genre pictures of the period, and the importance of Dutch cartography to Western civilization. The "Mirror of Empire" exhibition will open at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts on September 23 and run through December 31, 1990. It will then travel to The Toledo Museum of Art from January 27-April 21, 1991 and to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from May 23-August 11, 1991. George Keyes is Curator at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He is the author of three books on individual seventeenth century Dutch artists.
