This is a poorly written monograph by the claimed 'world expert" on morels and provides only generalizations rather than specifics on finding morels. To sum up this book, morels are everywhere and someday you may find the motherload. Good luck.

    4 out of 5 stars Basically ...Morels.......2006-11-05

I first picked this book off a bookstore shelf in Whitehorse when I was headed home with a BUNCH of Morels I picked up on the Kenai Peninsula. I thought there was enough meat to it that I ordered it later. It's a pretty thin volume ~130 pages, but then it isn't too pricey either. There are a couple of pages devoted to preserving morels. I had dried all mine, and Lonik gave techniques for canning and freezing them as well. There are also some 60 pages of recipes, which must be around 50 recipes; I didn't count. I thought there were some good recipes and some good cooking ideas. The book is pretty much just what the title says. That's not to say that it tells all about Morels: it's definitely geared to the collector not the student. If you're looking for a book about collecting morels and what to do with them once you have them, I recommend Basically Morels. If you're looking for different types of information about morels, this probably isn't the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Save your $.......2006-03-29

Very little information on where to hunt for mushrooms. (on the ground is about as close as you will get with this book) Some decent recipes but that's all you'll get from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, but don't buy "The Curious Morel" as well.......2002-05-27

This book "Basically Morels" is informative and has some nice recipes inside, however, this book is an almost word for word update of Larry Lonik's book "The Curious Morel", so if you already have that book then don't buy this one. Larry Lonik should be ashamed of himself for ripping off fellow mushroomers, by changing the name of his updated version of "The Curious Morel" to "Basically Morels" just so he can make another dollar.

    Book Description

Valerius Geist, one of North America's premier wildlife research biologists, shares his common-sense insights into the Great Plains' pronghorn antelope. The pronghorn is the last surviving larger mammal of an era when the American plains was teeming with more species of wildlife than the African plains.

Geist, professor emeritus at the University of Calgary, is a specialist in animal behavior. Antelope Country explains how the fleet pronghorn was nearly wiped off the plains along with its bigger brother, the American bison, in the late 1800s. Geist also explores the pronghorn's return to abundance through North America's voluntary and legislative conservation efforts.

Accompanying Geist's fascinating text is the breathtaking work of renowned wildlife photographer Michael Francis, which illustrates the pronghorn's beauty and complexity.

    - Fascinating historical and scientific insights into pronghorns and their prairie habitat
    - The culmination of 30-plus years of pronghorn research
    - 150 vivid full-color photographs of pronghorn antelope
    - In-depth interpretation of pronghorn behavior and its evolutionary success

4 out of 5 stars Interesting despite odd writing style.......2002-07-22

This book has excellent photography, and a decent text. The writing does suffer somewhat from a flowery style in some (not most) parts. The book is not very long, there is a lot of white space on each page, and the excellent photography takes up a lot of space. Still worth reading. At the end is a good annotated bibliography. Geist is extremely respected in this field, and he does a good job of sharing his expertise.

2 out of 5 stars Is this a book or a commercial for the foodplot industry???.......2003-08-11

I don't want to say I was disappointed with the book, but much of the information is too basic and can easily be found in greater detail in just about any magazine dealing with QDM. In reading the book I often felt like I was reading an advertisement for many of the companies now selling designer seed blends and other QDM tools.

The author is never critical of anything, be it a designer seed blend, a food plot tool, or a management practice, for example the PlotMaster the author recommends is only good for soil already turned by a plow or large disk, yet this is not mentioned. He would also have you believe that planting seed can be as simple as broadcasting it onto some properly limed and fertilized ground, then packed down with a heavy roller. Trust me, its not.

All things considered, I found the book a good read as a quick summary of food plot development, but by no means should it be considered a useful tool from which to develop appropriate food plot plans for your property.

5 out of 5 stars Food Plots are Hot.......2003-06-12

Planting Food Plots for Deer and Other Wildlife is a well written comprehensive book on food plots for wildlife. John Weiss is a respected outdoor writer who touches on a variety of wildlife subjects in his treatment of creating food plots and habitat for wildlife.
The book is easy to follow and very informative and will be a welcome addition to the libraries of land owners with an interest in wildlife.
Weisses treatment of food plots covers planting practices in some depth and will provide much useful information to beginers. Dougherty and Dougherty's new book "Grow 'em Right" picks up where Weiss leaves off and offers more in depth information on hunting, habitat development and food plots but together they make a nice book package. Add Alsheimer's new Quality Deer Managment book to the mix and you have it all.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for hunting land owners/manager.......2002-12-31

As someone who is new to managing a hunting property for personal use, I found John Weiss' book to be a very valuable resource. Lots of information on where to start, what deer and other wildlife prefer in terms of vegetation, and on where and how much to plant. The book is primarily designed for someone who has a mixed field/hardwood property and who has the ability to put in some serious time to improve the habitat. It is well written and interesting and chocked full of information - good value for the money.

4 out of 5 stars Some very nice pictures, not a lot of information.......2005-03-16

I found this book to be interesting, with a lot of nice pictures, but sort of short on information. It's 128 pages long, many of them full page photos (which no doubt cut down the number of possible information pages)and is divided into several sections. Much of the book is done from a sort of American Indian perspective telling of their traditions and uses, conflicts with the white man. Later on you get some stuff on the buffalo hunting period, that's also interesting if not entirely error free (in one place the dates are given as 1934 and 1947, that should be 18, not 19. They also call buffalo rifles .50 caliber when one photo clearly shows mention of other calibers).
Apparently a huge number of animals were killed even in the early pre- 1870's years.
The last part of the book tells of efforts to save the remainders of the great herds and how that's worked out as well as hopes for the future.
I'd liked to have had much more information (there are notes & a reading list at books end)but did really appreciate the large selection of photographs, most of them modern but some historical, that included not only the buffalo but some of the things made from or related to them. This is the real reason to buy the book.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding photography.......2001-12-16

If you love the Great Plains and have a heart for the prairie, this book will delight you. The photography in here is outstanding. After working with buffalo earlier this year, this was a book I had to get. Some of the photos, including the cover photo, bring not only the sights but also the smells and sounds of the giant herds to mind. These photos are worth more than 1,000 words... because they speak to my prairie heart.

This memoir of travels in the Amazon has an agreeable twist: Nicole Maxwell was hunting for medicinal plants with the triple goal of conserving the jungle, improving the lot of humanity and having a great deal of fun. Her tales span countries and decades, as we watch her mature from an enthusiastic if somewhat naive idealist to a true trouper. Despite setbacks and disillusionment, she never lost sight of her goal, and lived to see others pick up the task of cultivating important medicinal plants and knowledge, and further her cause of preserving the jungle through wiser use.

    Book Description

When Nicole Maxwell first visited the Amazon more than forty years ago, she had no idea that she would make a life's work of the people, plants and lore to be found there. Decades before Americans became aware of the riches to be found in the knowledge of plant medicines which native shamans had passed down over thousands of years, Ms. Maxwell, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, was scouring the Amazon ram forest for clues to this ancient medical tradition.

Now, on the eve of the decade in which mankind will have its last chance to determine the fate of this region and its wealth of traditional knowledge, Citadel Press's Library of the Mystic Arts is proud to bring out a newly revised edition of this classic work. Long hailed as one of the major works of popular ethno-medicine, this book is both an engaging adventure story and an engrossing account of the traditions of plant medicine to be found among the tribes of Amazonia -- and its re-release could not be more timely.

Scientists now fear that one plant species per day is being made extinct by man's ravenous appetite for "progress". Of the plants which are found only in the Amazon rain forest, only a tiny percentage have been tested for their full medical possibilities. Witch-Doctor's Apprentice is an inspiring and amusing plea to modern civilization to save these plants -- and the people who know how to use them -- before they are destroyed forever.

On the occasion of this newly revised edition, Ms. Maxwell has created an appendix which catalogs all of the plants mentioned in the text, with their scientific names, the names by which they are known locally, and their medicinal uses. This edition also includes a newintroduction by the noted ethno-botanist Terence McKenna.

"A spirited and engrossing personal narrative, as much about people and places, discomforts and dangers, the beauty of the jungle and the arc-leap of wordless communication across cultural barriers, as it is about... bringing natu

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable woman, ethnobotanical classic.......2005-07-30

Nicole Maxwell was an amazing woman who devoted much of her life to collecting and studying jungle plants for medicinal purposes. I read the first edition twenty years ago before leaving for the same location she had been to in the late 1950's of the Peruvian Amazon. This third edition is also first class.
After putting up with remote jungle river travel, wading through swamps knee deep, fighting off persistent insects, confronting the hot, humid climate and accommodations of isolated tropical living, plus other dangers and hazards of the rainforest too numerous to mention, she was snubbed by major pharmaceutical companies for the plant cures she discovered from local natives.
She had found plants that cured arthritis, eye diseases, diabetes, forms of cancer and plants that enhanced healing. Along with plants used as contraceptives, she also located ones which increased fertility and some that assisted in childbirth. Plants for infections, intestinal parasites, tooth and gum disorders, etc. are a few more to mention. The list goes on.
An extraordinary woman whose sole purpose in life was to benefit the well-being of humanity but unfortunately had it fall upon deaf ears.

5 out of 5 stars Witch-Doctor's Apprentice : Hunting for Medicinal Plants in.......2001-06-21

This was a great read for me back in '94 when it was presented as a gift and I have often recommended it. Nicole shares her life story when she is in her 80s. One needs to keep in mind the prevalence of ethnocentricity of our society back in the 50's and 60's. And to her credit she tells the WHOLE story, including all her fumbling bumblings of an imperfect human. As one who has ventured a little into the Bolivian and Belizian jungle her misadventures are only to be expected and provide great humor and reading. An example of her humor is while she is deep in the amazon jungle she relates that she wasn't all that concerned because what self respecting warrior would want a meazly female head for a trophy. Nicole was way ahead of her time in two areas: collecting ethnobotanical information and plants, and fighting multinational corporations in the pharmaceutical industry by bringing information directly to the people. I wonder if anyone has ever discovered what that one plant was that given one tbsp a woman was sterile until given a tbsp of another plant and she was fertile again! One may only be able to realize what an adventuresome and hardy soul she is, if you have taken steps into the amazon jungle yourself.

    2 out of 5 stars Witch Doctor's Apprentice Review.......2000-10-31

The book Witch Doctor's Apprentice is a personal narrative about Nicole Maxell's Journey into the Amazon. On her quest to find medicinal plants of the Amazon she is forced to overcome many obstacles. The book appealed to me as a nature enthusiast and an aspiring physician. I expected to learn about tropical plants and their uses in modern medicine. Instead it was a boring journey where she spent most of her time wandering around.

Maxell did do a good job using sensory detail. For instance, "She changes her distinction on every new fashion she follows. She changes the length of her hemline, the shape of her hate, the way she does her hair without altering her own strikingly individual personality." That description of a chic woman was used in a comparison with the town of Lima in Peru. The purpose of the book was informative, but it was nice when she did include the detail. Details helped move the story along and let us relate to the people/characters. She included a few travel troubles but instead of allowing the reader to find humor in them she made her dilemmas into catastrophies. In a similar book, Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams, he is looking for nearly extinct animals. That book was much more enjoyable because he was able to include humor. His book also included photographs. Often Maxwell would attempt to describe a complex plant and a photo would have been useful. She tried to include every detail of her trip, which made it boring. If she could have focused more on a few major events the book would have flowed better. Some chapters were extremely dull.

I liked how this non-fiction story included character evolution. Maxwell started out almost naïve about the Amazon and ended up far wiser. If she had done more research it would have cut out half of the story, which was made up of her messing around. Throughout the book Maxwell insults the indigenous people many times. At one point she states that, the Indian is the 'best looking male animal she has seen.' She is also surprised that the Indians are not savages. I hope her stereotypes can be attributed to the fact that she set out on her journey in 1958. She seems to think she is better than the people instead of treating them as equals. If she had valued the information they gave her, perhaps she would have had a more successful journey.

In my own writing I would like to use better imagery. She was able to describe things I've never seen before exceptionally well. I learned from her how difficult it could be to write a personal narrative. There are always ways to improve and she definitely had some improvements to make. The language she used made the time period clear and also showed how inexperienced the people were. This book was interesting but it was an un-enjoyable slow read.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Paper.......2000-09-04

I am a big fan of ethnobotany and Amazon stories but this is pathetic. She gets nearly no medicines on her journey, ends up chasing Indians around becuase she never meets them, and has racial slurs (published in 1961 originally) about how suprised she is that the Indians are not savages and unpolite ,etc.. She actually says that one Indian was the 'best looking male animal she has seen' Insane. Not a good book.

5 out of 5 stars The essence of the Amazon is "captured" in words........2000-03-18

An excellent book on the amazing Amazon jungle written by atrue "worldly treasure," Nicole Maxwell. END

          Book Description

          A Modern Library Paperback Original

During the first years of the twentieth century, the British plant collector and explorer Frank Kingdon Ward went on twenty-four impossibly daring expeditions throughout Tibet, China, and Southeast Asia, in search of rare and elusive species of plants. He was responsible for the discovery of numerous varieties previously unknown in Europe and America, including the legendary Tibetan blue poppy, and the introduction of their seeds into the world’s gardens. Kingdon Ward’s accounts capture all the romance of his wildly adventurous expeditions, whether he was swinging across a bottomless gorge on a cable of twisted bamboo strands or clambering across a rocky scree in fear of an impending avalanche. Drawn from writings out of print for almost seventy-five years, this new collection, edited and introduced by professional horticulturalist and House & Garden columnist Tom Christopher, returns Kingdon Ward to his deserved place in the literature of discovery and the literature of the garden.
