This lady knows her stuff. Every attribute you ever wanted to know about lavender is here. Though told from an Australian's exposure to lavender it is the bible for lavender grower's in identification of species and their traits. My only wish is it was more directed at America's varieties and conditions but it can be easily enough transferred over. The pictures are stunning and accurately done
Technical Descriptions Available in the "Bible".......2006-08-28
If you are a lavender lover who maintains all the plants in the garden with labels, then this book's for you. In a recent move, the labels of two plants were lost--I needed to re-identify them. This is a technical book right down to it's bracts and sepals. But it also is beautifully photographed so one can identify individual flowers, not just big pictures of a plant's growing habits. The only drawback was falling in love with a particular flower and realizing that it might only be available in her English homeland. But part of the fun of collecting is in the hunt! This book is truly the lavender "bible".

Lavender: The Grower's Guide.......2005-08-30
This is a lovely book full of in-depth information about different types of lavender with beautiful, detailed pictures. It's a great reference source, but works equally well as a coffee table book because it is so stunning to look at. I have only one minor criticism of this book and that is that it doesn't go into enough detail about the Lanata hybrids that seem to do well in our hot, dry southern California climate. I would have liked to have seen more pictures of these particular lavenders (there are a few, but not that many) and would have enjoyed learning more about them.
Usable tehnical growers guide.......2004-06-20
If you are looking for indepth information or good reference material, this is the book for you. No fluff here. Botanical info is clear and concise. As growers, we use this book as reference material on a regular basis. Well worth the money. Would love to see more of this caliber. The only draw back is that several of the varieties listed are not available here in the U.S..

Excellent resource.......2005-02-21
I live in Virginia so when I saw this book it was a "must have." It has great photographs of the trees and shrubs, showing both the full size plant as well as close-ups of the leaves and either flowers or fruits. Information is given around how large the plants get, colors and shapes of leaves, pace of growth and other interesting facts. One thing that especially drew me to this book was that when a plant is non-native, they let you know by saying it was introduced from Asia or Europe or wherever. They also give some ideas such as plant x can be grown well into hedges or fruits are made into jellies, etc.

This book helps to easily identify the various species of trees and shrubs that occur in the Virginia area. The descriptions are short, to the point and easily understood. Any one can enjoy this book and it is small enough to take on nature walks with the kids, or grandkids. In a very short time it makes even a notice seem like an expert in tree identification.

Excellent guide ...for a 1st edition........2001-12-02
This guide provides good information on Denmark, Sweden and Norway. I cannot comment on Finland since it was ommited from our Scandinavian Tour. The information on historical places was more than enough and accurate. This guide pointed to us the exact location of rock carvings in the Tanum area (Sweden), something that the signs on location failed to do!. The suggested "green" routes were magnificent. Me and Jonas really felt that we did not waste our time and that every one of these routes (both in Sweden and Norway) were "golden" ones. The general maps are not detailed but those of the "green" routes are, with precise indications of views and panoramas. You don't expect accomodation listings in the "green" guides (that's what the "red" are for). We were surprised although that Michelin failed to give a star rating (we would give 3 stars) to the magnificent town of Alesund, but merely underlined it! If we did not experiment on our own we would have missed one of the most beautifull Norwegian towns in the "Jugend" style. I think that for a 1st edition, this guide is a very good effort. It can guide you to the splendours of Scandinavia and comparing it after our trip with other guides I think that I would go back with my Michelin again.

facts and only facts.......2003-07-03
For my 20-day trip to Sweden and Denmark, I picked up several travel books (Lonely Planet Denmark and Scandinavia, Fodor's Scandinavia, Michelin the Green Guide Scandinavia Finland, Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2003 by Rick Steves, and Frommer's Scandinavia). Out of all of these books, the most consistent and most accurate are Michelin and Lonely Plant books.
I tried hotels recommended by Frommer and Fodor and was very disappointed (mind you, these had stars next to the write-ups). I tried one restaurant recommended by Frommer (w/ a star) and got sick afterwards. Silly me, I tired another (w/ a star) to give another chance and the meal was very mediocre. Same deal with Fodor. Where as Lonely Planet just gave facts about hotels and was very pleased with how things turned out. Hotels and meals matched the expectation that the book gave, so no unpleasant surprises.
I used the Lonely Planet Denmark book so much during the trip, I brought the Lonely Planet Scandinavia book in Denmark.... even though it was $...! It was well worth $....
As for Rick Steves, obviously, he only highlighted what he liked. There were some places that I loved in Sweden and Denmark that he suggest to skip.
For my next trip, I'm only buying Lonely Planet and Michelin books.

A must read.......2006-11-15
As a creative nonfiction student, I have read a number of memoirs and have found few to be as honest in its search for truth as Karen Spears Zacharias' "After the Flag has been Folded." Zacharias is a natural storyteller. Her style captivates the reader as she attempts to unravel the events of her life and to understand how the tragedy of losing her father to war impacted her family. The reader is left laughing one minute and crying the next as she glimpses into Zacharias' journey from loss to redemption. This book is a must read, especially for students of creative nonfiction. Its honesty is a refreshing contrast to the many poorly written memoirs that sensationalize on lifes hearbreaks and struggles.
Page turner---relevant.......2006-08-25
Very informative book. Not only does it help to understand the perspective of being a child of a KIA (Gold Star), but also, other Gold Star family members, since it focuses on all their lives. Furthermore, it is telling a life story, with plot, so it's not just "this is how a person would feel" from a clinical perspective, but rather, how it really is.

A fine biography; a necessary rescue.......2000-09-04
The lack of attention Donald Davidson has received since his death is scandalous. No doubt it stems in part from his racicialist views and resistance to the civil rights movement. Well Davidson was a flawed man--but to call him a "Racist" ( His old friend Robert Penn Warren's daughter says that his name was never spoken in their house on that account--I find it hard to believe) is simply to miss the measure of the man. He was a fine poet (just a notch below Robert Penn Warren and John Crowe Ransom) and a brilliant literary critic and teacher. His "Attack on Leviathan" is essential reading for those who confuse conservatism with Newt Gingrich, and his poem "Lee in the Mountains" is a tribute not only to a lost cause, but to all lost causes, and should therefore resonate with all but the incurable narcissist. Winchell has done us a great service by presenting the man warts and allto us. If we ever get beyond the name calling that passes for political and literary judgement these days it will be due in large measure to books like this one.

I loved all off the Murano glass in Venice. I saw Dale Chihuly's work last year and Tagliapietra's was far supperior. An interesting presentation of a masters work.

This book had great info, but if I had visited agoraz first, I would have known a lot more about Venetian Glass
