Book Description
Revised and updated in accordance with modern taxonomic proposals, this edition offers a well-documented, logical and clear explanation of the structure and classification of fungi along with an introduction to physiological, biochemical, genetic and ecological data. The taxonomic approach provides a framework with predictive value. Therefore, the discussions of the numerous activities of fungi that directly or indirectly impact other living things, including humans, are discussed in the context of their close relatives. Contains scores of illustrations, life cycle drawings, tables and new photographs.
Customer Reviews:
classic text but no bargain.......2006-10-07
This is an excellent introduction to the fungi, however the cost is extremely prohibitive. The coverage is good, and its strong points are in morphological description and taxonomy. It is less impressive in molecular aspects of mycology. Given the high price of this volume, I highly recommend checking it out from a library to see if it meets your needs and expectations before deciding to purchase. And keep in mind that there are more affordably priced alternative pathways to introduce you to the fungi, such as The Fifth Kingdom by Kendrick.
Excellent reference text for fungi.......2001-10-12
The text is a good introduction to fungi with several excellent black and white pictures and illustrations. The text also contains an extensive glossary of mycological terms. However, as other reviewers have indicated, the text appears to be written for people with at least a general biology background. As a microbiologist, I find this book to be a perfect reference for fungi.
A classic introduction with a focus on plant pathology........2000-09-15
Last month I began browsing my 1962 edition of Introductory Mycology. Lo and behold I read through the whole book over a weekend. This book was our bible for the Mycology 100 course in grad school. I was noticing how good the narrative and drawings were in this classic. The book is not a glitzy tome so common in textbooks today. Each class of fungi is dealt with separately and there are extensive references at the end of each chapter. Of course because of the date of my edition some of the references are dated. However, the basic science here is solid and presented in a pedagogical manner. The chapter on class Basidiomycetes deserves special mention. The basidium development narrative is just superb. If you have an interest in fungi and want to delve deeper into this important living group then get this book. It will serve you well for years to come just as it has done for me.
More intermediate than introductory Micology.......2000-07-21
This textbook is designed and geared towards individuals with already a basic understanding of fungi. Unlike the title, one should be acquinted with basic terminology so that the reading is more instructive and helpful. Once a basic understanding is established, this book can be a great aid when exploring the world of fungi either scientifically or for leisure purposes only. The figures are very useful and the book is well organized and easy to follow.

Book Description
She needed a life....Gemma Jericho is an overworked New York doctor with a handful of a teenaged daughter and a mother who worries that Gemma has no life. So when her mother receives a mysterious letter telling her about an even more mysterious inheritance in Tuscany, Gemma sees her chance: the three of them throw caution and convention to the wind and leave for Italy. Gemma hopes that a change of scenery will bring back the closeness she used to share with her daughter. And perhaps the challenges of living in a foreign country will give her mother something to worry about beyond Gemma's social life. ....And la dolce vita was waiting for her in Italy! But what they encounter there is far more distracting than Gemma expected: a crumbling old villa and a town divided. Half the residents believe that Ben Raphael, another American, is the rightful inheritor of the villa. As cultures clash, gossip soars, and intrigue unfolds, Gemma is caught up in the most disturbing and delicious trouble she's ever had. Now her summer in Tuscany will change her outlook-and her life-forever.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, delightful and dreamy ..........2007-05-24
Looking for something to read the other night, I found this on my bookcase and thought, it'd be a nice pace from the other books I've been reading lately. It is. It is fun, delightful and dreamy. After all, with summer almost here, who wouldn't like to go to Italy and spend the summer there?
It is a typical love story ~~ where woman meets guy, woman scorns the guy and soon, they fall in love together, but something tragic has happen in the woman's past keeping them apart till love is too great and conquers all. However, it's written in a delightful and witty way, with lush descriptions of the Italian countryside, the delightful relationships between mother and daughter, grandma and granddaughter, between man and woman, between Italy and the land, sky and sea. It is a dreamy book and very romantic. I actually found myself sighing over several chapters in this book ~~ which I haven't done in a long time.
If you're looking for a dreamy book to while away those lazy summer afternoons, I highly suggest this one. It's not classical literature by any means, but it's one of the better ways to escape reality for a few hours and fall in love with reading and Italy all over again.

Ugh........2006-07-23
Well-versed in books that take place in Tuscany, I was sorely disappointed with the empty, predictable plot holes, the vaguely perfect characters, the untouched and unrealistic view of what Italy is really like, and the insecurity that twinged just about every character in the book. Why can't there ever be a romance novel with a heroine that doesn't trip over herself or realizes that maybe, just maybe, she's just not too bad looking? No matter how much time Adler may have claimed to spend in Italy, her notion of a place where nothing changing, life is better when it's simpler, and every Tuscan town is full of interesting and intriguing Italian stereotypes is sorely mislabeled. Time to take a few more trips to Italy...or hire a better researcher.
It was a "bellisimo storia d'amore"............2005-12-16
.... or as I learned - a "beautiful love story'! My constant daydreams of traveling to Italy (and/or Greece) were temporarily satisfied by this lovely book. Ms. Adler's descriptive writing made me feel as if I were in the quaint Tuscan Village watching from the sidelines, could feel the hot sun, see the bougainvilla flourishing, taste the fresh fruit, good cheeses & meats & excellent wines. I blushed with the strong felt love between the 'afraid to love' Gemma & the handsome, loving Ben Raphael and his persistence not to let her go. And I beamed with happiness for Momma Sophia Maria for making her decision to live life to the fullest day to day. I will be sure to check our Ms. Adler's 'House in Amalfi' so I can continue my 'visit' of Italy without ever leaving my seat!
Love & Intrigue in a Foreign Country........2005-05-25
Tuscany in France is where they make the best wines. However, this story is not about that kind of spirits. A Mysterious letter arrives in New York City where Gemma works in Bellevue Hospital Trauma Department. Enchanted by a chance to spend some travel time with her mother, Nonna, (castigates her constantly about being overworked as an M.D.) and her teen age daughter, Livvie, who needs a change of scenery. And so, they travel to 'Paradise', the village of Bella Piscere ("Beautiful Pleasure") only to discover that the 'inheritance' is a crumbling old villa.
The residents are of the opinion that another American by the name of Ben Raphael is the rightful owner of the villa. If so, why then has he not maintained it? It is an eyesore on the beautiful landscape of olive groves, fields of sunflowers, ancient stone villages -- and pastel-colored villas.
"Gossip ensues and intrigue unfolds." Sounds very romantic. This is one summer to remember, better than the movie, "A Summer Place.' That summer will change her outlook, and all their lives, forever.
Written by author of THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS, Elizabeth Adler has visited this part of the country on regular basis, but lives in Southern California. Some of her other novels include THE SECRET OF THE VILLA MIMOSA, IN A HEARTBEAT, and NOW OR NEVER.
What a lovely surprise!.......2005-05-04
While looking for books on CD for my husband to listen to while working, I stumbled on "Summer in Tuscany" and kept it for myself. What a lovely story! Elizabeth Adler's rich prose had me in Italy with Gemma and her family, enjoying the sights, sounds, smells and tastes as if I were part of the Jericho family. The romance in the novel is just as appealing.
Elizabeth Adler's writing is so delicious, it's prompted me to make a visit to the Amalfi Coast to work on my next novel which will be set there.
Thank you, Ms. Adler for this lovely read.... I am currently devouring more of your fabulous novels.

Book Description
A Summer in Tuscany is an insider's guide to making the Italian vacation more enjoyable. The author gives the reader the confidence to travel to smaller towns where English is often not spoken, to "live Italian." There are lessons to be learned about food, wine, cooking, shopping, driving, and the Italian language. That said, once opened, the book is hard to close. Swanson's writing style is similar to a good conversation with a friend. She writes in a visual way, so that one can see exactly what she describes. The reader feels that they are at her side, whether driving a perilous road, bargaining at the marketplace, dodging snakes, or sipping wine amid the vineyards.
Customer Reviews:
BORING-- limited audience.......2007-07-23
As someone here said, "she's no Frances Mayes". If she was, the book would have been published by a mid-sized to large publishing house. This author self-published. The fact that the author went this route probably means that no publishing house felt it worthy......I guess her book appeals to wealthy tourists who don't speak Italian and want to shop, and who aren't bothered by a badly written, un-edited book. The book's audience is limited and there are much better books out there on experiencing Italy.
Sorry to Say - A Poorly Written and Annoying Book.......2007-02-24
I wish there was a way to give this book a negative number of stars. Not because it was that bad (although it was pretty awful) but because it seems that friends of the author have given less than accurate reviews to put it mildly. This self published book is very amateurish and downright annoying. How many times do you need to explain how to pronounce San Gimignano (Sahn-Jim-ee-NYAH-noh). After about the twentieth time you will be ready to scream, not to mention when she switches to calling it San Gim and feels the need to explain that pronunciation also. The story goes something like this - Our villa was near San Gen (San JIM). It had a pool and a terrazzo (tair-AHT-sah); terrace. There was a ristorante (ri-store-AHN-tay); restaurant nearby. You had to pay in lire (LEE-ray) plural of lira. We were very hungry. The waiter said "Va bene?"
(vah-BEN-ay). We said "Si, Va bene" (See Vah-BEN-ay)... You get the picture.
And if you are a novice to foreign travel, please don't take advice from a woman who makes lunch reservations from the U.S. six months in advance, and paid $210 to ship a box to Italy with disposable cameras, a pillow, plastic wrap, soap, detergent, candles, writing paper and "reliable" pens. She learns how to say "taste", degustazione in Italian and when she sees grape vines, goes and knocks on people's door and asks to taste their wine. When they look at her like she's crazy she asks to buy some and is accommodated. If she had been able to laugh at herself and her faux pas, this could have been a hilarious book; however she seems to think she is extremely clever to have planned this trip and learned a few words of Italian.
I love travel, Italy, and travel narratives. I adored 1000 Days in Tuscany, The Reluctant Tuscan, Extra Virgin and was hoping for a similar read with A Summer in Tuscany but instead got a poorly written journal that never went any deeper than "got up, went swimming, ate a pastry, read a book".
Chik lit.......2006-05-31
My book club ultimately chose this book for our winter reading, preparing for our summer vacations. It also gave us the impetus to take group Italian lessons. When our club chair asked us to write a category for the book, we came up with "Chick lit." It's what Martha Stewart might have written if she wrote a travel book. We came up with a new category, "Martha lit." A Summer in Tuscany is all about what women love, food and wine and tips for finding a villa, and shopping and gardening and art. We loved it. Go for it.
Needs editing...badly!.......2006-05-08
Like one of the previous reviewers said, this reads like a dear diary. Just as background I've read a whole slew of books on travels in Tuscany -- from "Under the Tuscan Sun" to "One Thousand Days..." I love them. Every one I'd give a 4 or 5. So, based on similarity, I picked this one out. It's a fast read, in part because half the book is stuff like "We got on the 3:00 flight..." or "I told Robert to go to the store to get bread and cheese..." Clearly this was based on a journal the author kept while in Tuscany. That's a fine basis to start a book. But the problem is, the author seems to have no understanding of an audience. Next time please PAY AN EDITOR to edit this stuff before you try to pass it off as a book for general readership. In the meantime, I can't recommend this to anyone other than the author's immediate family that were on the trip with her... In my initial write up I gave it 2 stars, but now I wish I could change it to 1 or 0!
Cento Stelle.......2006-01-20
Grazie mille. An Italian American who didn't speak Italian before, now I am. Wonderful trip with you by my side.

Book Description
In her latest novel, Amanda Craig once again demonstrates not only her splendid skill for storytelling but also her incisive wit as she spins Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into a delightful modern-day tale of love and lies, set against the magical landscape of Tuscany.
When an American lawyer, Theo Noble, and his English wife, Polly, rent an Italian villa–the Casa Luna–for their vacation, they envision an idyllic summer spent in the relaxing company of good friends and family: an eclectic Anglo-American mix. They have invited Theo’s brother, Daniel, as well as their friends Hemani and Ellen, to join them. While their children Tania and Robbie will have Hemani’s son, Bron, to play with, Polly hopes her mother-in-law can be counted on to control Tania’s and Robbie’s wild imaginations by force of a personality that can curdle mayonnaise at thirty paces. Even the arrival of Ivo Sponge, the journalist who Ellen–for some reason–detests most in the world, seems unlikely to interfere with the pleasure of exploring art and nature. But the Casa Luna is a place of enchantment and anyone who lives there risks discovering aspects of themselves and other people that go deeper than any clash of cultures. As the temperature rises, it soon becomes increasingly hard to tell what is imaginary and what is real.
Love in Idleness is at once a deft interpretation of Shakespeare and a delectable contemporary comedy of manners that is certain to captivate.
Customer Reviews:
Unsatisfying.......2004-09-30
The author does a nice job setting up the story, and developing the characters. However, I was deeply disappointed with the novel's ending. I don't want to give away too much information, but some plot lines seemed far-fetched, and too neatly tied up. I had high hopes for this novel, but was disappointed.
perfect holiday reading with extra depth.......2004-08-22
This novel reminded me a little of one of my favourite books, THE INN AT LAKE DIVINE. Not because it tackles anti-Semitism, but because it has one truly obnoxious mother-figure, plus a cast of engagingly innocent young adults. I was surprised to see one reader objected to the portrayal of the children, which struck me as completely spot-on - and I have to say that, as a veteran of sharing holiday homes, Polly could have been my own self-portrait. Maybe that makes me a door-mat too....Anyway, it's a really clever, charming romantic comedy that made me want to visit Tuscany even more than Frances Mayes book did. Furthermore, it had a lot of ideas simmering away about the nature of children's grasp of what is real and what is imaginary. Plus, the ending made me sigh with contentment.
Good enough to make Shakespeare smile.......2004-08-12
The conflicts of modern life. Allusions to Shakespeare effortlessly incorporated. Vivid characters. Fresh, memorable metaphors. A touch of magic. Innocence. Deviltry. All this, plus a plot that twists, turns, and makes you laugh and think at the same time. Love in Idleness is good enough to warrant a second perusal, just to catch the delicious detail missed in the first reading.
A Beautifully Composed and Magical Escape.......2004-07-31
A group of American and British people on vacation travel to the idyllic Italian setting of Casa Luna, Cortona for a fortnight and find that their expectations about what will happen are totally reversed. Craig introduces a large cast of characters who we get to know intimately over the course of the novel due to her skill at delicately portraying the psychological state of each one. She shows how Daniel's noble sensibility is at odds with his mother Betty's more ambitious goals for him. The author is able to beautifully conjure her characters sometimes in a single terse, meaningful line such as "Betty did not so much converse as hand down a smaller tablet of stone." Craig also creates the intensely fresh perspective of the young in the three children showing how their magical world melds with the vibrant physical landscape of the Italian countryside. Those that are familiar with Craig's earlier work will recognize Ivo as the mischievous critic who loves to be hated from A Vicious Circle. But even with this superficially unlikeable man, the author's meaningful phrases hint at an underlying insecurity giving his character a lot of depth. Over the course of the vacation the characters find themselves paired with the ones they could never admit to really desiring. All it takes is the madness of summer and a little fairy magic.
This is a thoroughly engaging and funny novel that is an up to date revisioning of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Although the tone of the novel maintains a comic air, Craig doesn't shy from tackling difficult social issues such as racism, sexuality and our culture's obsession with beauty. These problems are woven into the characters lives making them a fully-realized, modern and recognizable group of people. Most importantly, this book ponders the question of love in a way that is not trite or sentimental. Rather it shows the maddening confusion of it, the heart-stopping joy it brings and how it pulls us in the most unexpected ways.
Disappointing.......2004-07-20
While I enjoyed the allusions to A Midsummer Night's Dream, one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, I found this book far from satisfying. Craig evokes the Italian landscape beautifully, but I couldn't get past my disgust with some of the characters. Betty is horrid, but she's supposed to be; the problem is with characters we're meant to view sypathetically. Polly is a spritless doormat, only slightly evolved by the end of the book, and her two children are among the most hateful, odious brats I've ever seen in fiction. Craig apparently writes children's books as well as reviewing them; I hope she doesn't think all children are as rude and insensitive as those she portrays here. Quite polluted an otherwise pleasant read.

Silk thread and embroidery, together with an expanding repertoire of symbols, are known to have made their way from China to the Holy Land along the Silk and Spice Routes before being introduced to Europe by Christian saints, holy men and pilgrims. Mainly using cross-stitch, Palestinians have continued to embroider their traditional motifs, giving them their own appellations and developing their own terminology. As clothing was of prime importance, Palestinian women wanted something personal, distinctive and handmade. By adopting the traditional styles and motifs of her area, a woman expressed her wish to identify and be identified with her cultural roots. Samples of late-nineteenth to early-twentieth century Palestinian costumes are considered to be representative of folk art at its best.
Through the vicissitudes of war and occupation, Palestinian folk materials have been dispersed, though samples are to be found in published material, in museums outside Palestine and in small private collections. Leila El Khalidi's work in identifying and recording the history and motifs in Palestinian embroidery will be of interest both to craftspeople and to students of folk traditions and is an important step in preserving the Palestinian heritage. The book is illustrated with a detailed appendix showing the principal motifs and with photographs of traditional costumes.

Women's Hand Made Clothing of the Holy Lands: Valuing Culture and Creativity .......2007-04-11
This is a very interesting direct and informative book steeped with information about the historical women's garb of the Holy Lands. Anyone studying textiles, women's studies, art history and religion, as well as those interested in sewing technique would find this book highly informative. Particularly enjoyable to me, were the beautiful color photographs as well as the descriptions of the parts of the clothing and the fact that each region had a type of dress specific to it. I hope that high quality images on CD or slides of each of the outfits shown along with details of the cloth will soon be available for educational use. As we all know it is of paramount importance to preserve the creativity of each and every culture in our world today because so many cultures are being destroyed by conflict. Iman Saca and Maha Saca deserve much commendation in their role in preserving the historical clothing of the Palestinian women of the Holy Lands.
