Reptiles and amphibians are all over our world. This book helps you identify the most common species and where you'll most likely encounter them. I would recommend this book for people who are looking for answers about these species.

Book Description
Since its creation in 1973, the award-winning Moon Handbooks series has become a top choice among travelers who want a unique experience, a new perspective—and a few new stories to tell. Want to know about your destination's history, culture, and social issues? Looking for the lowdown on recreational opportunities, dining and accommodations options, and the most interesting regional sights and entertainment? No problem. Big or small, mainstream or obscure, every worthwhile detail is included in these books. Covering the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific, Moon Handbooks give you the tools to create a travel strategy that's yours alone. The result? A more personal, entirely uncommon, and ultimately more satisfying travel experience. Mike Sigalas, a veteran Moon author, brings his humor and strong sense of history and local color to this second edition. North Carolina is home to the Eastern United States' highest mountains, tallest waterfall, oldest river, largest wine industry, greatest gold strike, richest tobacco farms, busiest National Park, as well as a legendary shoreline and the early homes of four of the nation's most important presidents through WWI, and Sigalas covers it all.

Not up to date.......2007-05-31
I'm pretty serious about my travel, and I like a travel guide that isn't exhausting to read, has insights that you can't find just anywhere, and of course is up to date, that's why I pay for the LATEST edition. Unfortunately this one isn't up to date, I ran into several snags trying to make reservations when one of the listings for lodging had changed ownership, name, and reservation policies years ago, the prices were way off the mark and overall it wasn't as helpful as the free guides you can get by writing the local government, which ship free.
Excellent travel book.......2006-03-12
A lot of travel books can be a dry read. But not this one. This book is full of great information and facts and I really enjoyed reading it. I learned things I didn't know about North Carolina and found some great restaurants too. I highly recommend this book!
Joke Book.......2005-09-01
This book a sound choice for people interested in sarcastic writing.
However, if you are more interested in insightful observations about and experiences to be savored in North Carolina, as opposed to perpetual attempts at sarcastic humor at the expense of the inhabitants, you'd be better off choosing just about any other travel guide to North Carolina.
Great Guidebook to a Great State.......2003-04-05
In a time of increasing specialization in travel books (one expects to see any day now a book for gay Civil War reenactors who travel with dogs) there is still a place for a guidebook for an entire state.
Mike Sigalas has done the best job that anyone has in serving up an introduction to North Carolina. He goes from Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks to the part of North Carolina that reaches out under Tennessee, pointing out the highlights as well as giving a taste of the history and cultural heritage of very different places.
His gentle humor works well in these pages. While talking about a sapphire mine in Franklin, for example, he explains how the owners sell tourists "a bucket of mud alleged to contain wondrous stones."
You will find more detailed books on various parts of the Tarheel State--and Mike has written a couple of those as well--but you will not find a better guidebook to the entire state.

Book Description
South Carolina is a land of contrasts -- placid salt marshes and thundering Appalachian falls, majestic Lowcountry plantations and austere cotton farms, gracious manners and fiery passions. In Moon's new South Carolina Handbook, author Mike Sigalas provides a thoughtful look at the history and people of this defiant state, with insights into its myriad subcultures from the Bluegrass world of the mountain mill towns to the unique Gullah culture of the coast. In addition to exploring the cobblestone streets of Charleston and the golf meccas of Myrtle Beach, Sigalas offers readers such unusual destinations as Cheraw, birthplace of Dizzy Gillespie; Ocean Drive Beach, headquarters of the Shagging subculture; and Cayce, home to the world's only combination BBQ joint, gospel mission, and job office. South Carolina Handbook also focuses on the state's outdoor recreation offerings, including Chattooga River whitewater and the new statewide Palmetto Trail. Extensive listings, unparalleled maps, and fascinating sidebars round out this comprehensive guide.
Customer Reviews:
I wasn't disappointed... extremely helpful.......2006-10-16
So far, I had never bought a tourist guide. Maybe it's because I never traveled before just for the pleasure of traveling, for the excitement associated to discovering new people, new places, new cultures. When I decided to spend my week of vacation last August in Charleston, South Carolina, I supposed that, to make the most of it, I should get a guide. After taking a look at the different guides of South Carolina and Charleston in my local bookstore, reading the online reviews at Amazon.com, and listening to the advices of Dary, a good friend and a seasoned traveler, I decided for Moon's South Carolina. And I wasn't disappointed. The book provided me with an excellent background on history, culture and geography. Also, as some people already pointed out in other reviews, the author is funny, so the reading is most pleasant. But what really caught me was the feeling that he was talking directly to me, that he was by my side. While I was enjoying a peaceful walk in the old streets of Charleston, the book helped me to understand better and, as a consequence, to experience more deeply the beauty of the Old South. But I'm digressing. If you are looking for a guide to South Carolina, this one definitely will work. Accurate information, plenty of details, many places to visit. In summary, a good investment. I think that my visit would had been much poorer without the help of Sigalas's book.
Sigalas knows what we want.......2006-02-14
If you're touring South Carolina, Sigalas knows it's probably for one of the following reasons:
Myrtle Beach
Historic plantations and houses
Small town getaways
Food
That's what you get here. It's very well done and irreverent, sometimes humorously so. There's enough sophistication to this guide to keep amateur historians and architects happy, but it is by no means a complete catalog of historic landmarks and locations. Rather, we're really talking about the highlights. The thing I like most about this guide is its attention to small towns off the beaten path which make for pleasant discoveries. It encourages you to find the time for places like York, Georgetown and Camden, for example. The thing I like least about it is its very summary coverage of the State's greatest place, Charleston. While Sigalas does a lovely spread of Columbia, he concentrates his attention on the far south-eastern tip of the peninsula in Charleston. Forgivable, I'd say, since there are many, many resources that cover Charleston more thoroughly.
Enjoying this Book!.......2000-05-05
A lot of fun to read. I've just finished the first chapter and I already feel like an expert on the state.
Practical and Very Funny.......2000-04-21
I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to know more about South Carolina. It's got all the information you could want, lots of interesting background, and on top of that, it's a joy to read. Sigalas cracks me up all through this book. Seriously, my wife came in a half-a-dozen times while I was reading to ask me why I was laughing so hard; she couldn't believe I was reading a travel book. A good read even if you're not going to S.C., and a great book to bring along if you are. It's like traveling with a friend who knows all the spots and has a good sense of humor.
Informative and Entertaining Guide to South Carolina.......2000-01-20
This book provides excellent information on the sites, restaurants, accomodations, and history of South Carolina. I enjoyed reading it immensely because not only was it was humorous and well written, but it has a lot of interesting historical details and unique suggestions for things to see and do.

Customer Reviews:
worthwhile companion guide to the coastal Carolinas.......2003-04-25
Mike Sigalas's guide to the coastal areas of North and South Carolina is a fascinating resource with maps, pictures, historical information, and an insider's knowledge of restaurants, accommodations and entertainment.
The book is written in a casual, friendly style and organized into sections about the region's history, climate, wildlife and plants; travel information such as activities, food, transportation and services; and in-depth chapters on Nags Head and the Outer Banks, New Bern and the Central Coast, Wilmington and the Southern North Carolina Coast, Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand, Charleston and Vicinity, and Beaufort and the Low Country. The book concludes with a listing and synopsis of books and films set in the area or about the area, and a very good index.
Having just returned from a stay in Charleston, I can say that the chapter on that area was well-written, informative and presented well. Museum and attraction listings include hours, fees and phone numbers. Accommodations described were traditional, B&Bs, rental homes and campgrounds. Restaurants are divided by cuisine and location; we tried four of them and were happy with the advice. Entertainment information is given for festivals, concert venues, clubs and bars, playhouses, movie theaters and coffee shops. Sports, recreation and shopping information proved reliable, and the transportation section addressed walking, tours, public transport and visitor centers. Several pages discuss places of interest in the Greater Charleston area.
This book was very helpful to us. Well done.
Carolinas - A Little Bit of Heaven.......2003-01-14
At last, a travel book that informs like a dusty tome of history, amuses and entertains like comedy, and that is as hard to put down as thriller fiction. This author has given us an overview of the Coastal Carolinas that is observant and accurate. He writes about the region with a non-deprecating irreverance born of loving familiarity...... his is a self-mocking humor, that is acceptable because it is obvious that this author is in love with this little bit of heaven. Well-done, Mr. Sigalas!
Terrific travel book!.......2001-07-10
I loved this book! It made me laugh out loud! The writer is really funny and his restaurant recommendations were fantastic! The sites to see were also great. Sigalas really knows the South.
Very informative travel guide.......2001-07-09
This book came in handy on my recent trip to Charleston, SC. The recommendations the author made were excellent. I found the book to be entertaining as well. I also have the South Carolina Handbook and it's excellent too.
Great information and a really funny read!.......2001-07-09
This travel guide book is fantastic! It is full of great information on hotels, restaurants and places to see plus it's really fun to read. This writer is really humorous! He knows his Southern history, culture, and food. I highly recommend it!

Customer Reviews:
Horrible, Evil, No-Good Book.......2001-10-27
This is the most horrible book I've ever had the misfortune of laying my hands on. Why? Because it gives unbelievably bad directions. I dont't think the authors have ever been to N.C. My husband and I were in Charlotte for only 3 days and this book led us on a wild goose-chase for an entire afternoon. This book directed us to go east on I-85 for 20 miles to find the Schiele Museum...well it turns out the museum was in the other direction. The next day we consulted the book on how to get to the Latta Plantation. We were told to take I-88, but there is no I-88 in Charlotte. Avoid this book like the plague.
All right, but..........2000-05-10
Let me get this out of the way, I am a North Carolina resident and I not far from two of the places mentioned in the book (i.e. Crowders Mountain and Kings Mountain [Both the town in NC and park in SC]. I like the layout, but despite its abundence of content, it still lacks in that area. This book seems overloaded with places to eat that sell alcohol. There much better places here in NC that do not sell alcohol (i.e Market St. Buffet & Bakery in Gastonia and Jigger's 50s Drive-In here in Bessemer City).
Good overall, but light on the Southern Outer Banks.......2000-05-02
Although a good overview of the historical shaping of North Carolina, I was especially thrown by the lack of attention given to the Southern Outer Banks. It would seem that Avon, Buxton and Hatteras are so unimportant that they don't even need a map in this work.
The text on these towns is also fairly short, a glaring omission in a book that points out (with text and maps) various attractions along Hwy 12 along with milestone markers for the Northern Banks.
This is a well written and comprehensive guide..........2000-02-21
This first edition is surprisingly well written and comprehensive. North Carolina Handbook should be a welcome guide for anyone desiring to visit or just know more about North Carolina. Moon Travel Handbooks have been around for 25 years and are best known for being the guidebooks for adventurous travelers. Moon Travel Handbooks excel in their historic and cultural focus, their significant coverage of flora and fauna and are especially welcomed by this reviewer for their maps and clear directions. North Carolina Handbook is no exception to these trademarks. Especially impressive for a first edition is the comprehensive coverage that Rob & Jenny give to the history of this fascinating State.
I checked out various recommendations and found all to be right on the money. I would not hesitate to rank this guide among the best for North Carolina. Highly Recommended

Book Description
Illus. with photographs from the Dust Bowl era. This true story took place at the emergency farm-labor camp immortalized in Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. Ostracized as "dumb Okies," the children of Dust Bowl migrant laborers went without school--until Superintendent Leo Hart and 50 Okie kids built their own school in a nearby field.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and Inspiring.......2007-10-09
This book is a beautiful testiment to the human spirit, and the resilancy of the American spirit.
It is also the story of taking a chance on people that other's find useless.
A beautiful book and a beautiful story.
Connecting Childen to History.......2005-09-09
this book is an excellent companion to the historical ficiton book "Bud, Not Buddy." By reading aloud sections of Children of the Dustbowl, teachers could build some of the background knowledge that would help children understand how the daily lives of the average person changed as a result of the Great Depression and the 5-year drought in the Midwest.
Given the devastation of Hurriicane Katrina, this book also offers insight on what can happen when large numbers of people must migrate because of weather-related disasters.
Children of the Dust Bowl.......2005-09-08
The book appeared to be new, no marks, and sent immediately.
Readable for ages five (with help from parent) and up........2002-04-04
The writing in this book is excellent, flowing evenly from page to page. Many of the photographs within are pure art, having been taken by Russell Lee, Dorothea Lange, and others. These two people are the Pieter Bruegel and Thomas Hart Benton (depicting plain, everyday folk) of American photography. This book relates a small chunk of American history, to be sure, but more than that, it relates universal themes of the human condition. Overall, the book relates the brutal conditions of the dust bowl, the migration over the mountains and desert, taunting and prejudice from settled Californians, and eventual attainment of excellence, as revealed by the construction and maintenance of the Weedpatch School, which eventually became a model school in the community. My 5 1/2 year old enjoyed reading every page, and found particular mirth in the unusual daily chore that the dust bowl children did with their cows. The description of this unusual chore is worth the price of the book. What was this daily chore? One way to find out is to borrow or purchase this book.
Children of the Dust Bowl.......2000-07-26
I am a student at St. Lawrence University, and doing a summer fellowship about the works of John Steinbeck. This book, while written as a children's book, is a valuable look at the Arvin Federal Emergency School, the conditions of the Dust Bowl, American attitudes about the poor, and Leo Hart, the man whose vision for a "broader curriculum" among his students was so influential and inspiring.
Stanley treats the same material in short form in an article in The American West (1986).

Product Description
From Scholastic, Inc. Approximately 9 X 8 inches. Illustrated with photographs. "Children of the Dust Bowl" is the compelling story of the 'Okie' migration to California of the 1930s and of the construction and life of a remarkable school at a farm workers' camp there. Told largely in the words of the migrants themselves, and generously illustrated with period photographs, this memorable book provides a glimpes of a neglected period of American history and tells a story of prejudice being transformed into acceptance and despair into hope."
