Great Science Project for Little Learners.......2007-09-03
If you are looking for a simple "experiment" for the budding scientist in your home, this is an excellent book. As you read this with your young child, he/ she will certainly be inspired to do what the kids in the book are doing; planting a bean seed and watching it grow.
As you read along with the story and follow-up with actually doing the experiment your child becomes part of the story, waiting and watching as his (or her) own seeds develop. Children learn the essential elements of growing seeds. Once you have successfully grown your first bean plants, there is a page at the rear of the book that guides you through additional "experiment" ideas to go even deeper.
This book, because it is on the Stage 1 level, is a bit less informative than the other Let's Read and Find Out Science books that we already have in our growing collection which are primarily Stage 2, but certainly worthwhile in that it guides parent and child through a very simple Science project.
Basic concepts covered in this book in addition to the seed growing are:
1. Counting (stage 1 is geered toward preschool to early kindergarten)
2. Patience (in that you must wait days to see things begin to happen)
3. The ability to follow instructions (the steps to perform the experiments)
Seeds for little kids.......2007-08-27
This book is a lil juvenille... not as information. But it covers the basics... I wished it was a bit more scientific.
My five year old enjoyed this book.......2003-01-10
We enjoy the "Let's - Read - & - Find - Out" series of books. This one is a good addition, explaining seeds on my five year old son's level of understanding . Something that many adult writers of childrens' science books sometimes aren't very good at getting across. It is in my child's library at school.
The books in this series are informative and interesting for their target audiences. The illustrations are well done and add to understanding the process being described. They make it easier to follow for kids.
Life Springing Forth........2002-03-28
This book should have been more appropriately titled HOW TO WATCH A SEED GROW. Instead of discussing the various stages of development and explaining what happens, the book is basically an extended science project explaining how students can watch a seed grow into a plant. The book talks about the different stages, but only discusses what the planted beans should look like in those stages, not really explaining what is happening or why. Nevertheless, the book does outline a good science project for younger children, but isn't much as a book to read to kids.
A Kids First Science Book.......2000-04-13
This is one very good science book. If you would like to do a seed project then this is a good guide to lots of young peoples questions about plants. It has colorful illustrations about what is happening with your project. It is written in detail, but not like a boring high school science textbook that goes on, and on, and on about one thing, giving every detail that there is. So what I'm trying to say is that this is a good book.
Product Description
For hands-on activities involving parts of a plant, trees, flowers, and seeds that connect science with real life, choose Plants. This book, designed with good science and easy teaching in mind, covers these concepts: a plant is a living thing, plants have many parts, each part of a plant has a special function, the fruit of a flowering plant contains seeds, seeds contain new plants, seeds travel in many ways, plants change as they grow, plants need food, water, and light to grow, people need plants for food and oxygen, not all plants reproduce from seeds made by flowers. Activities help children practice skills in: observation, analysis, communication, making comparisons, prediction, critical thinking, and recording. Areas of study address major themes such as: change, structure, function, cycles, diversity, and cause and effect. Samples of the hands-on learning experiences: conduct experiments and record results to find out what plants need to grow, look inside a seed and then make an ?Inside a Seed? book, plant bean seeds in a growing bag and keep a growth log, experiment to prove that plants give off oxygen. Contains many reproducible, ready-to-go resources, such as record sheets, logbook forms, minibooks, and picture cards. Illustrated throughout with fun, yet accurate line art. All 80 pages perforated for easy removal.

Great Homeschooling Resource.......2006-04-11
I bought this for a Plants unit for my homeschooled children (K and 2nd). It really worked well for us, bringing interesting experiments, high-interest information, and easy-to-follow directions (a must for the busy homeschooling mom!) The children get to see first-hand what the inside of a seed looks like, the parts of plants, and many other things.
I was pleasantly surprised with the ease of turning this book into a science unit for our homeschool as well as the interesting activities within. Too many "made-for-school" lesson plans seem to be watered down, boring, or difficult to pull of in your kitchen or living room with multi-aged children. This one, however, meets with my approval, and I am looking forward to using other books in this series.

When Mortimer Henryson offers to take care of a strange plant called Plantzilla for the summer, he is in for more than he bargained for.
Customer Reviews:
Loved it : ).......2007-09-04
I am a huge fan of David Catrow as an illustrator so anything he does that i can get my hands onto i read. This book was quite a pleasure. A cute story about a boy and his love for a class "pet plant" that he fondly refers to as "plantzilla" spreads to the rest of his family after some unseemly events. The pictures really bring this book to life and melt a little spot in the heart. I'm glad i added it to my personal collection. I can't wait to share it with my students during our science unit on plant life cycles.I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! (Ala Notable Children's Books. Younger Readers (Awards))
Plantzilla.......2007-02-05
A good story for first graders and up. Lots of reading on some pages that might lose the younger kids. However, the pictures are very good with lots of detail to look at. The story is told through letters from the main character, his parents and a teacher - very cute.
When you give a living thing love............2003-02-09
This is a wonderful book in so many ways.
The colorful artwork from David Catrow is charming, wild and vividly exciting. The story, told by letters, is wacky and kids love the premise.
Mortimer writes to ask his science teacher Mr. Lester if he may care for the class plant over the summer. Hilarity ensues when Mr. Lester grants that request. Mortimer's mother writes a few letters herself when Plantzilla gets out of hand.
This is an original tale with beautiful illustrations and a powerful message. My students enjoyed it immensely.
A Boy and His Plant............2002-11-11
Mortimer Henryson loves Plantzilla. All year, during third grade, he sat next to him, brushing the cilia on his leaves, watering him, and keeping growth charts. "Plantzilla is the only plant I care that much about." Now that summer vacation is right around the corner, Mortimer wants to take Plantzilla home with him. "...he might miss me over the vacation and wonder where I am." Mr Lester, his science teacher is only too happy to find Plantzilla a good home for the summer, and so with his mother's permission, Mortimer brings his unusual potted friend home. And no one was prepared for what happened next..... Jerdine Nolen has authored a heartwarming story with a gentle message, that won't be lost on young children. "When you give a living thing love, you never know where it will lead." Her creative text, written as letters back and forth between Mortimer, his mother, and Mr Lester, is engaging, and filled with twists, turns, and hilarious surprises. David Catrow's bold, bright, and busy illustrations are rich in clever, playful detail, and bring Plantzilla to life in all his glory. Together word and art paint a fun-filled, loving portrait of a boy and his plant, that captures the imagination and sends it soaring. With a satisfying, happily-ever-after ending, Plantzilla is perfect for youngsters 4-8, and a charming, feel-good story that shouldn't be missed.

Customer Reviews:
Great story for a young reader.......2007-06-17
'Fluffy Plants a Jellybean' is a delightful addition to the Fluffy series and a good example of Fluffy's silly charm. My son (third grade) was a book-hating non-reader until he met Fluffy. Fluffy changed that. In 9 months my son has gained almost 3 years in reading ability. A good part of that gain was his desire to read the Fluffy books. These books are great fun for kids and parents. The Jellybean story with it's combination of Fluffy and the Jack and the Beanstalk tale is particularly enjoyable.

Book Description
What's so great about corn?
Popcorn, corn on the cob, cornbread, tacos, tamales, and tortillas. All of these and many other good things come from one amazing plant. Aliki tells the story of corn: How Native American farmers thousands of years ago found and nourished a wild grass plant and made it an important part of their lives. They learned the best ways to grow and store and use its fat yellow kernels. And then they shared this knowledge with the new settlers of America.
Customer Reviews:
All About Corn -- a review of Aliki's "Corn is Maize".......2005-08-24
This is an interesting book and the second science book that we have looked at which was written and illustrated by Aliki. In this book she covers a wide variety of aspects of Corn.
She begins by explaining that a corn kernel is a seed. She then shows how sun and rain affects the planted seeds. There are drawings of developing corn with tassels and silk (boy and girl parts.) There is a smaller drawing of the route pollen takes to get to the kernel. The pollen travels down the silk to reach the kernel egg.
It is at this point that I will say that I think 4 and 5 years of age is too young for this book. (I have a 5 and a 3 and it was definitely over their heads.)
But to continue-- The book discusses how other plants scatter their seeds but how corn needs people to survive. It emphasizes that scientist have never found any 'wild' corn but only the `civilized' version we know now.
From there the book divulges how native American were instrumental in developing the corn of today. It discusses how some groups used to bury a fish under each corn `hill' and how growing beans and squash with corn made all do better.
It then proceeds to show how corn was used by native Americans, how it was stored and celebrated in religion and dance, and how Christopher Columbus took corn or maize back to Europe. The pilgrims appreciation of corn is discussed as well as the many, many ways that corn and corn products are used today.
Five stars. A comprehensive book about corn for children. The artwork is alternatively in color and grayscale, but this should not be a big drawback for those interested in the subject. The age range as mentioned before, should be fairly advanced, say first or second grade and above.
Example of text follows so you can gage reading level, etc.:
"But although scientists searched,
they had never found any wild corn.
Not long ago they found some.
It was in a cave in Mexico where people once lived.
They found scraps of plants and tiny ears of
ancient corn, more than 5,000 years old.
It was not like any the scientist had ever seen."
A great informational book.......2000-04-06
Corn is Maize is a great book on corn. It not only shows how corn is grown and the many uses. It teaches the children about Indian culture and how they shared their corn with the prilgrams. A book of history, science, and social development.

My book is a treasure hunt........2004-12-21
My book (The Backyard Explorer Kit) is a treasure hunt -a nature treasure hunt. Children will have a good time as they learn to be more observant outdoors. The Album has a different shape on each page so even small children will have fun collecting all kinds of leaves - leaves with big teeth, round teeth, small teeth or no teeth--- and then match and paste them to the shapes.
In the Guide Book children will see that almost all trees have leaves that belong to one of nine shapes. Also there are projects that children can do all year long -even in winter. Children learn when they're touching, doing and having fun.
A marvelous gift to thrill any little kid- into a new world .......2004-09-10
No exaggeration and no comparison between the full color outdoor world the lucky youngster sees after this charming book opens it up for him or her--compared to the drab ho-hum before. Guaranteed--five minutes after getting this book kids will be clamoring to go out and collect leaves to put in their album! And will be seeing leaves and trees and the great outdoors in a magic new way. Once the child experiences the fun of being a Leaf Detective, boredom is not an option when trees are nearby. Discovering Deserts.......2006-01-17
I am a high school special education teacher for developmentally delayed students. We did a unit on deserts. This book help me organize/develop age-appropriate lessons and worksheets for the students. The pictures/illustrations were helpful also.
Wonderful Resource.......2003-07-26
This is a great book for teachers who will have to teach anything science related. Every book put out by the National Wildlife Federation is great.
There are lessons that provide art and craft ideas to help bring home the lesson that you are trying to teach. There are recipes for clay and food that you can use to help teach about deserts. There are facts to share and bulliton board ideas and more. There are copy sheets for worksheets and more.
The directions are clear. The books are easy to read and fit a large amount of information provided in a format that makes it easy to find when you are looking for something in particular.
Enjoy.

I used this book while teaching a unit on biomes in my High School Special Education Resource Science classroom. Discovering Deserts has exactly the right mix of factual material and hands-on activities needed to appeal to a wide range of ability levels, ages, and learning styles. The materials totally engaged my students' interest. This is a really useful resource and I plan to purchase other books in this series.
