Book Description

For centuries, carnivorous plants have carried an air of fascination and mystique unparalleled in the plant world. Growing Carnivorous Plants is a comprehensive guide to identifying and cultivating these remarkable plants. From the well-known Venus flytrap to obscure African sundews, from the giant pitcher plant vines of Borneo the microscopic bladderworts of Florida, more than 200 species, hybrids and cultivars from all genera of carnivorous plants are described. Included are explanations of the fascinating and diverse mechanisms the plants use to trap their victims. Imitating a plant's natural environment is the key to success in growing carnivorous plants, and this book will help readers select the best plants to grow on a windowsill, in a terrarium or greenhouse. Information on how to feed carnivorous plants will enable even the most squeamish grower to ensure that plants receive the nutrients they require. The book's 400 photographs include both spectacular images from the wild and lovely plants in cultivation.

4 out of 5 stars Best photos of any CP book.......2007-06-14

Although I haven't grown CPs (carnivorous plants) for a few years I haven't forgotten my interest and fascination for them, so I was excited to see that Barry Rice had written a book on the subject. Barry has long been one of the most dedicated and accessible "experts" on the topic, and his talents combined with his sense of humor often make for great reading. This book departs somewhat from the usual treatments on CPs, beginning with a whole chapter discussing CPs in popular culture, which I was glad to see even includes a photo from the movie "Little Shop of Horrors." Another departure is where he seems to give equal attention to each genus of plants, rather than focusing heavily on the more commonly grown ones, such as Sarracenia, Drosera, and Nepenthes (personally, I always appreciated the bias towards Sarracenia, but I recall that Barry was more partial to underappreciated plants like Utricularia). It is also a bit heavier on the topic of conservation than most - something he's probably much more aware of than the rest of us.

I find it difficult not to make comparisons to other books when there have always been so few available on the topic. But I was slightly disappointed to find that growing advice seems a bit thin and almost noncommittal, although I had to admit that it was accurate (it's hard to say which "way" is best in growing many CPs because what may work for one grower doesn't for another - a point made clear in the book). I think for a novice to CPs "The Savage Garden" is perhaps the best book available for straightforward advice on cultivation. And while I've truly enjoyed this book, particularly the sections near the end discussing seeing CPs in the wild, the species by species chapters left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. But the one facet where this book is head and shoulders above all others is in the photos. Barry's photography skills and willingness to get out into the field with the plants and get muddy make this book an essential addition to the library of any CPer. It certainly left me eager for the time when my schedule allows for a CP collection again.

5 out of 5 stars CP Perfection.......2007-06-14

I have been growing CPs for a number of years and also collecting books on the subject. I have many, including rare and hard to find volumes, but none come close to the overall quality of this book. Knowing what I do of Barry, this comes as no surprise. The text is accurate and fun to read and the photos are to die for (no pun intended). This is a first rate, high quality book which would be worth adding to your library at double the price offered here. Thank you Barry!!

5 out of 5 stars Growing Carnivorous Plants by Barry Rice.......2007-05-31

This is a very detailed book describing the various carnivorous (really insectivorous) plants found worldwide. Descriptions include habitat, conservation issues, and guidelines for cultivation. Numerous photos are provided, especially closeup photos which are very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-11

This book has excellent information and beautiful pictures that drape the pages of this book. Perfect choice for the novice to the veteren who wants to brush up on fundamentals of growing Carnivorous Plants. If you are looking for a book to help you out this is it. It is one of the two books I have that I would recommend along with Peter D'Amato's book The Savage Garden.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely done. .......2007-03-31

This book is good for anyone who is beginning to learn about carnivorous plants or someone who is interested in growing them. It is organized alphabetically by Genus with information on the physical plant such as the trapping mechanisms to native range and cultivation suggestions from feeding to climate requirements. There is an average of two to six pages per genus with lots of photos. There is a minimum of technical jargon with words that are fairly easy to comprehend without being intended for school children.

Peter D'Amato has been raising carnivorous plants for three decades, and his nursery, California Carnivores, houses the world's largest collection of flesh-eating flora. There's not much D'Amato doesn't know about growing these oddballs of the plant world, and he imparts his expertise gracefully and with humor in The Savage Garden, which is aimed at curious gardeners who want to grow carnivorous plants both indoors and out. From the ever-fascinating Venus flytrap to the aquatic bladderwort and the rather extravagantly sexual-looking pitcher plant, these exotic plants have a reputation for being difficult to grow, but D'Amato proves otherwise. The necessary water and soil chemistry, proper lighting, and propagation tips are discussed thoroughly along with descriptions and growing tips for many species in each of 11 plant families.

If plants can have personalities, these do--or at least appear to in the hundreds of witty photographs and colored illustrations that show them both at their hungriest and at their most innocuous. This is a stunningly comprehensive guide that will inspire and fascinate even the most squeamish gardener. -- Barrie Trinkle

5 out of 5 stars the savage garden.......2007-10-01

Zeer goed boek,

5 out of 5 stars Awesome read!.......2007-09-26

I have read many reviews about this book, and now that I have gotten this book, I have to agree that it is packed full of information! I was not able to keep carnivorous plants alive before I read this book, and now they are bright and beautiful! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting a carnivorous plant collection!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for anyone ranging from novice to experienced CP growers.......2007-07-24

The book is well written and well organized. It presents a wealth of information, and is an indispensable part of anyone's library interested in carnivorous plants.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!!!.......2007-04-11

If you are going to buy one book to help you out with growing your carnivorus plants then this is it. It is the number one best reference book to cultivating, caring, learning and just about anything else you want to know about carnivorous plants. This book has been my bible and I never make any changes to my Carnivorous plant arrangments without consulting this book first. This is the king of all Carnivorous plant books. It has even made me want to take a trip from Phoenix, Arizona all the way to Sebastopol, California where this authors Carnivorous plant nursery is located. Not to mention that Peter D'Amato's nursery is supposed to be the largest Carnivorous Plant nursery in the US. If you are looking for a book then stop right now and choose this one. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Simply an amazing book and a great value! .......2007-01-03

This book is worth its weight in gold, plain and simple. It is an absolutely wonderful collection of history, humor, scientific and horticultural information about virtually all known types of carnivorous plants. While not geared toward the die hard biologist, it is packed with enough detailed information about the plants, presented in clear and elegant fashion, that it will satisfy readers from almost any background.

In this book you will find, without a doubt, some of the best information for growing these wonderful and increasingly rare plants. Whether you're a novice grower or have a modest collection, there is something for you in this book. This book covers it all, from growing medium to green houses, from terrariums to watering techniques, it's all there in clear, concise form and expertly organized.

This book is literally a steal at its current price and I would easily pay twice as much for it. There is a reason that this book has gotten, with one exception at this time, five star ratings from everyone that reviewed it. It's the same reason that anyone and everyone who seriously grows carnivorous plants already owns a copy. Do yourself and your plants a favor and buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent first book on carnivorous plants.......2005-09-08

This is an excellent first book to fire up the interest of children in carnivorous plants. This is a hobby of mine, and I have an extensive collection, and am interested in conservation of their habitats.

The book talks about the major genera of carnivorous plants (although it completely skips Pinguicula, the butterworts). The full-color illustrations are beautiful and accurate. The information in the book is all factually accurate. It even briefly covers conservation.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting details on plants.......2003-08-08

I bought this book along with Plants Bite Back. We had already read our library copy of the Plants Bite Back and I actually was not sure I needed another book on carniverous plants. To my surprise, this little book offers other very important and interesting details on plants that are not in the other book (which is an excellent book also).

I am glad we got this book (e.g.it explained why we shouldn't keep touching the Venus Flytrap--it probably saved the plant's life from inquisitive little hands).

        5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2001-08-07

This is one entralling book! I knew there were meat eating plants, but I never thought of them as "passive" and "active". The book is broken up in cute sections, "Gulp!" and "Slurp!" being my favorite, but the entire book keeps your interest. The drawings are quite excellent and you learn a lot just by looking at the pictures. I really enjoyed it and my little brother just loves it. A hit.

Great subject, and wonderfully presented with interesting scientific facts and beautiful illustrations. This book made learning about insect eating plants a treat.

1 out of 5 stars Unethical Authors and Inaccurate information.......2006-12-31

As has been said by others, the authors are unethical and support (even in their book, in writing!) the wild collection of carnivorous plants, many of which are now in danger of extinction from, guess what, habitat destruction and wild collection by poachers. The authors have been known through out the CP community to actually financially support plant poachers and this coupled with the poor accuracy of the books information makes it a poor purchase. Please, try D'Amato, Slack or Rice's texts if you want a real CP book. This is garbage, written by trash. Do not give them your money because they are helping to wipe out the plants you care about.

3 out of 5 stars Alright But there are better.......2006-09-08

This book is an okay book. It has good examples of plant experiments which you can do if you have a stable collection. However, I prefer to sit and read Savage Garden by D'Amato and get his more insightful view.

I bought this book when it first came out and before I knew much about poaching and how it was endangering wild plants, especially carnivorous plants. After reading the book and their opinion on field collection I'm appalled and ashamed to have spent money on this book and supported this business in any way.

5 out of 5 stars For any professional/academic botanical reference collection.......2001-08-11

Typically found in nutrient-poor soils, carnivorous plants are true predators that attract, entrap, and digest insects for the purpose of obtaining minerals necessary to their growth, function, and reproduction. In Carnivorous Plants Of The World, James and Patricia Pietropaolo (founders of the Peter Pauls Nurseries in Canadaigua, New York) draw upon their more than 25 years of experience to provide the gardener, horticulturalist, and botanist with a comprehensive compendium of carnivorous plants from around the world. Each chapter specifically addresses a particular category of carnivores including Venus Fly Trap; Pitcher Plants; Sundew Types; Butterworts; and Bladderworts. Within each genus, the species in cultivation are fully treated while the remainder are listed with brief descriptions for identification. The authors then cover the issues of cultivation techniques, pests and diseases, propagation and hybridization. The "reader friendly" text is enhanced with line drawings, lists of carnivorous plant sources and societies, a glossary, and an index. Carnivorous Plants Of The World is an essential addition to any professional or academic botanical reference collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent field guide to North American carnivorous plants.......2003-05-19

The book is a nice in-depth look at the carnivorous plants that are native to the United States and Canada. The coverage is expecially thorough for Sarracenia, although still adequate (and probably more extensive than any other book available) on Drosera and Pinguicula.

The pictures included are mostly excellent, showing the plants in habitat when possible, instead of just using cultivated plants. And although the distribution maps may be a bit dated, they are helpful to understand the general areas where the plants might be found. Also, included with each section is some basic cultivation advice that I've found very helpful.

This isn't a book for a novice grower of carnivorous plants, but rather for someone who's been growing them for a while and wants more information on their native habitats and environments, as well as more technical information on each plant. An excellent book.

This expanded second edition of Carnivorous Plants Of The U.S. And Canada is a 'must' for any reference library which specializes in botany or nature: it provides photos and comments on the natural history of a variety of carnivorous plants, from common species to rarities. It's organization and language lends to easy use by lay gardeners as well as researchers, while photos and vivid descriptions of plant biology make Carnivorous Plants Of The U.S. And Canada an excellent library reference.

        Book Description

The mobile tentacles of the Sundews, the snapping lobes of the Venus Fly Trap, and the slippery, baited pitfalls of the Pitcher Plants seem the stuff of science fiction, yet these amazing plants do exist. Adrian Slack focuses on some fifty species, using photographs, line drawings, and diagrams to illustrate their peculiarities. He explores in detail the wily manner in which each type of plant entices, catches, and digests its prey.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference for carnivorous plants! .......2007-01-03

I think some of the previous reviewers may not have been aware that Adrian Slack has a different book available that deals specifically with growing carnivorous plants. This book's intended purpose is definitely not to be a "growing guide" for carnivorous plants. Rather, it is a rigorous and detailed study of the plants themselves, their history, biology and trapping mechanisms. Yes, there is a small section in end of the book regarding cultivation, but it is clearly intended to serve more as an appendix than a main chapter in the book.

To dismiss this text on the basis that it is not a growing guide and that it lacks sufficient cultivation information is a cheap shot, because that was never the author's intent and anyone who has read it could tell you that.

For what this book IS intended to do, it is without a doubt the best on the market (even today!). No other carnivorous plant book on the market today covers their biology and trapping mechanisms in such vivid detail, nor do they provide such high quality drawings and examinations of just how these plants function.

If you want information on how to cultivate these amazing plants, this is definitely not the book for you. If, however, you want to know where these plants come from and seek rigorous scientific detail on just how they work, this is without a doubt the best resource in publication, bar none.

This book has been around for a long time and I hope it remains in publication because there is currently nothing else that supplies the same information. If you are growing these plants and want to know more about them than what is covered in more popular cultivation books (e.g. Peter D'Amato or Barry Rice's texts) then this book is what you need. It makes an excellent companion to many of the cultivation books on the market today and will give you an even greater appreciation and understanding of these remarkable plants.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic on the scientific side of things.......2006-05-14

This book definitely excels in the scientific side of things. Reading the various methods by which the plants lure their prey and then trap them was extremely fascinating. There is no doubt, that if you want to know the different mechanisms by which these amazing plants work, then this book is for you.

Unfortunately, I don't feel it explained in any great detail on how to cultivate the plants or how to grow them. The section of the book that dealt with growing the plants was rather superficial and disorganised.

Nonetheless, when it comes to science I give it 5 stars, but when it comes to methods of growing, I give it 3 stars. Overall, I would give it four stars. I still recommend it- it was a great read for me and I'm sure it will be for you too.

        3 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment.......2006-03-10

I was a little disappointed with this book. Adrian Slack's expertise can't be doubted but as a layperson I found the book heavy going. There was an awful lot of scientific jargon used and I didn't even finish reading it - something I rarely do. There were some stunning full-page colour photos in the book which were sadly few and far between. Most of the photos were black and white or sketches. I like my gardening books to have full colour photos and a minimum of jargon. One for those with scientific/botanical backgrounds only I think.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the collector, but probably not for a beginner.......2003-05-20

This book takes a look at the various types and species of carnivorous plants. It is not an all-encompasing field guide and doesn't try to list every known species, but is a good introduction to carnivorous plants and the methods they use to trap prey and some of the more common species in cultivation at the time.

Practical growing advice is at a minimum - for that it's better to see the author's later work "Insect-eating plants and how to grow them," or a more recent book such as D'Amato's "The Savage Garden." As I understand it, this was the first serious book devoted specifically to the study of carnivorous plants since the 1940's. As such it is probably more suitable to the collector of carnivorous plants (and books about them) than someone who is trying to grow them.

But still, I've heard Slack called the "Father" of modern carnivorous plant cultivation, and his books deserve respect for that alone. The photos in the book are superb, although there are few, and most are B&W.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and comprehensive, great photos.......2001-05-12

The book is outstanding. It covers most types of carnivorous plants, and has many excelent color photos. It has a section on how to grow & care for each type of plant. From pot size, soil, light, humidity, fertilizers, growing period and more.

A minor negative - some additional information would have been useful. I wish it had a little more information on the optimal pot size for the plants, some have this info, some don't. And don't expect it to have every complex Sarracenia Hybrid covered, although it does have a lot of them.

Ive read many (most?) books on CPs published in the last 50-60 years, and this one covers more, provides more info, and has better pictures. This deserves 5 stars, unlike the typically inflated rating. I use it to research any plants I consider buying. If you're interested in CPs this book would be worth buying. It's a steal at its current price. ... .

          Book Description

Plants that trap and eat animals: an amazing phenomenon that has inspired awe since before the days of Darwin. The victims may be flies and butterflies, small crustaceans, or even vertebrates the size of rats.

Lured into the danger zone by optical, tactile, and olfactory strategies, the prey succumb to ingenious traps and face their doom. But unlike plants that temporarily catch insects for pollination, the true carnivores go considerably further: they digest them for the nutrients they need to survive in extremely inhospitable sites on land and in water.

Anyone captivated by the unearthly beauty of the "flowers of evil" will treasure this stunning, encyclopedic exploration, which also includes animal-trapping mosses and fungi, as well as advice for growing and buying carnivorous plants and an extensive international bilbliography. It is an essential reference for hobbyist, naturalist, and collector alike.
