Customer Reviews:
A good, short, nuts and bolts approach........2007-05-31
This was my first time reading about travel writing and it was a quick, easy read. Good practical suggestions. Geared more to travel fluff than to travel literature, but that's okay... we need to learn how to do it all.
Teach Yourself Travel Writing.......2002-04-20
I recently had the opportunity to take "Teach Yourself Travel Writing" on a trip. Although I have no intentions of being a travel writer myself, I thought perhaps I could get a few ideas
and capture the essence of my experience. I was not disappointed. "Development of an Article" was very informing.
I have since given this book to several of my traveling friends. It makes a nice "Bon Voyage" gift.
Practical tips for writing and traveling.......2002-01-15
I never considered writing about traveling until I read this book. I learned some practical tips while traveling: for example how to pack utilizing my suitcase in an efficient way and what to wear. The author suggests dressing in clothes that are appropriate according to the customs of the area, which helps myself and those I am interviewing feel more comfortable. This is a must read for anyone wanting to publish their travel writing and for the average traveler who just needs some tips to make their experience more enjoyable.
An enriching read!.......2002-01-09
As an avid traveler for years, I have kept a diary of all my trips. This book has enriched my journeys and become my guide to achieving a secret goal that I have always had to write about my travel experiences and try to get them published.

Hit and Miss.......2004-09-17
"Om" is an account of a journey through the southernmost part of India, starting at Kanya Kumari and ending near Madras (Chennai). Its not really a travelogue, rather the author hops from place to place, from ashram to ashram, meeting a mixture of people along the way. Compared to "Calcutta", written twenty years before this work, it's a very different kind of travel book.
Of course, much of that difference can be put down to the fact that in "Calcutta", Moorhouse could concentrate on one city, whereas "Om" coveres a larger and therefore more varied part of the country. However, I felt that Moorhouse's writing was distracted in "Om", perhaps due to the fact that at the time he was grieving over the loss of one of his children whilst coming to terms with his own survival after a heart attack.
It might not be surprising then that the spiritual side of India comes to the fore in "Om", but it does mean that other aspects of the journey, apart from Tamil politics, do not engage Moorhouse's attention - for example, descriptions of the countryside and towns and of the everday life of the people are often fleeting, whereas the ashrams are described in some detail. I thought that was a shame, as I've read plenty of other accounts of Indian ashrams, but did want to find out more about southern India.

Customer Reviews:
The ultimate book on the history of the Houston Colt .45's/Astros.......2005-11-02
Anyone who enjoys reading about the history of baseball will love this book whether one is a Houston fan or not. It is a history book and a human interest story all rolled into one.
One get's the feeling after reading this book a feeling of a little sorrow of not having the opportunity to have known some of the unusual personalities depicted in the book, especially pitcher Dick "Turk" Farrell whom obviously was an under rated but solid major league pitcher and a man of a thousand pratical jokes.
The power struggles between the men who helped bring major league baseball to Houston is a story that is almost too intriguing to be true yet is a story that is factual in every detail.
To the fan of the Houston Astros baseball franchise, this is the ultimate book on the history of the origin of the team.
Author Robert Reed definitely did his homework on this one.
Hot Times In Houston.......2004-08-08
I grew up and still reside in the Bayou City. I was born in 1967, two years after the Colt .45's moved from Colt Stadium into the Astrodome and changed their name to the Astros.
Even as a young child I remember having an almost mystical interest in the Colt .45's. It was a marvel to me that they could actually play basball outside in the summers in Houston. I clearly remember my little leauge days in Houston thinking about the heat and humidity and the glare of the sun.
There was never an abundance of information on the Colt .45's or pictures of the old stadium unless you heard it about it from older Houstonians or former players that still called Houston home. This book is truly the Bible of Houston baseball. It is comparitive to the Old Testament's GENISIS. I swear if you curl up on a lazy afternoon and let your mind flow with the book you will feel as though you have travelled back into yester-year and you are there at Colt Stadium, mosquitos, humidity and all.
Sadly baseball in Houston now is a joke. The Astros are the epitome of over-paid, grossly under achieving, lazy athletes. I grew up with the Dome and I would have glady gone to Colt Stadium to root on a near last place team. AT LEAST THEY TRIED AND MADE AN EFFORT. The new ballpark downtown I have nicknamed "The Coffin". With it's retractable roof "The Coffin" is either opened or closed depending on what day you drive by. Most every player inside the place is alrady dead or just going through the motions.
This book celebrates the effort, the entertainment and the energy that once exsisted in Astros history but no longer does. This is the written account of the genisis of major leauge baseball in Houston. It also includes INCREDIBLE photographs in color and black and white.
This book is NOT to be missed ! Read it !
A real winner.......2002-01-08
An excellent and detailed history of the Colts and their origins in the planned Continental League, the National League expansion of 1961-62, and their colorful early days until they became the Astros. Lots of great photos of players, now-defunct ballparks, and memorabilia, and the real inside story of the name changes from Colts to Colt .45s to Astros. A winner all around.
Sweet and well done.......2000-09-01
I stumbled on this book at a bookstore in upstate NY, a far cry from the Houston area. As a baseball fan, it caught my eye although I had very little knowledge of Houston's MLB origins. What sold me-- at least during that quick perusal in the bookstore -- was its treatment of how Houston and NY both came into the league at the same time. After reading it, though, I'm astounded at the history and story of baseball's first major-league team in the south. The no-hitters, the futility, the tear-jerker about Jim Umbricht .... this story reeks of everything that baseball is -- good things, such as colorful characters, true fans, baseball as a game first and business second, and tragedy as well -- the real "Love of the Game" story, not that Kevin Costner tripe. Whether you know anything about Houston, the Colt 45s, or Texas, do yourself a favor and read this book. Heck, it's a human story, not just a sports story. The younger fan may not "get it," but those of us who grew up with those hot summer nights listening to baseball on transistor radios -- no matter were you lived of what team you claimed -- will enjoy the trip back.
When Baseball Came to Houston.......2000-05-22
Texas coastal heat, tropical humidity and giant mosquitoes; those are my memories of Colt Stadium. But I also remember the excitement of going to a real major league game in Houston. This book brings back all those memories and tells things I never knew about the screwball cast of characters who made up the team and the giant personalities who labored to bring big league baseball to Houston. The Colt .45s included major talent such as Joe Morgan, Rusty Staub, Jim Wynn and Larry Dierker. But they also had "colorful" players such as Richard "Turk" Farrell. A must for any collector of Texana, baseball or Houston history.

Book Description
Louis L'Amour, one of America's best-loved and most authentic western writers, penned more than 125 novels in a thirty-year career. His heroes, many of whom appear in various volumes, had strong views about right and wrong, and they also had great respect for the environment and for the rights of the Native American. This is the first full-color companion to L'Amour, enriched with more than 100 specially researched illustrations that bring to life the detailed settings, authentic equipment, and strong moral characters that populate his historically accurate novels, which have been popular with audiences around the globe for more than 50 years.
Customer Reviews:
A Must for Western History and Louis L'Amour Fans.......2005-10-04
This slim but mighty volume serves a number of purposes. First and foremost, it is a worthy companion to the novels of Louis L'Amour, and sheds historical light on his fictional west. While I loved "How The West Was Won" - one of the very first movies besides Clint Walker's "Yellowstone Kelly" that I ever went to see, Mr. Wexler's book brings the Rawlings family, particularly Zeb and Linus into proper historical perspective. He also does the same for the famous Sackett characters, and others like "Utah Blaine" here as well.
Secondly, it is a coffee table book filled with artifacts, paintings and graphic images of those who fought for, settled, and left their mark on the West - the good, the bad, and yep, the ugly too. Wexler might have provided a stronger narrative on the Indian and the Wars for the Plains and the Desert; he did not. Those wonderful sepia toned photos of Cowboys on the plains are also conspiciously lacking; and I'm surprised he was so minimal when it came to discussing Buffalo Bill Cody. There are no discussion nor imagery of the great scout's "Wild West Shows" - but then again, the old Colonel never really passed through Mr. L'Amour's novels.
Wyatt Earp and the dynasty of Western Outlaws, plus women of the west, good and bad, proper and soiled get their due; there are also fine photos of the gambling tables, the scout's gear and acroutments, the ghost towns. If you already have coffee table books on "Western History" then there's not much difference about this one from the others save the homage to Mr. L'Amour...but for the Western History beginner, or for someone who would love a good and new coffee table Western History book, this slim volume makes an purdy awesome book.
"The Wild, Wild West of Louis L'Amour" is also a companion book accompanying the wonderful new "Guns and Gamblers" exhibit at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona.

for the grass enthousiast.......2007-07-18
This book has excellent detailed drawings of the whole plant, and the bloom or seed head. The descriptions of the grasses are thorough and include fair-excellent ratings on wildlife and or cattle grazing. For a native grass enthousiast or a rancher, this book is excellent.
Many grasses have similar visual attributes, though. For the average person who has no previous knowledge of grasses and no alternate source with actual photos, this resource could be confusing by itself.
GRASSES AND HOW TO IDENTIFY THEM.......2000-06-12
THIS BOOK ON GRASS IS A REAL GOOD BOOK FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN LEARNING A LOT OVER IDENTIFICATION OF GRASSES.

Book Description
"Journals of nineteenth-century U.S. Marines are rare, and Henry Gusley's is a truly outstanding account of the shipboard experiences and observations of an enlisted marine.... Edward Cotham's scholarship in the introduction and in annotating the journal is outstanding, and he has drawn on the appropriate sources. This is one of the best jobs of editing in the field."
Joseph G. Dawson III, Professor of History, Texas A&M University
"I found Gusley's 'notebook' fascinating, informative, and ultimately moving.... Civil War historians will find the information about the inner workings and day-to-day life aboard U.S. naval vessels patrolling the Gulf of Mexico and the major river systems of the Trans-Mississippi interior highly informative.... This book should also find a popular audience. Bright, literate, constantly upbeat, and good-humored despite the many difficult circumstances he found himself in, Gusley is good company for his readers."
Patrick Kelly, Associate Professor of History, University of Texas at San Antonio
On September 28, 1863, the
Galveston Tri-Weekly News caught its readers' attention with an item headlined "A Yankee Note-Book." It was the first installment of a diary confiscated from U.S. Marine Henry O. Gusley, who had been captured at the Battle of Sabine Pass. Gusley's diary proved so popular with readers that they clamored for more, causing the newspaper to run each excerpt twice until the whole diary was published. For many in Gusley's Confederate readership, his diary provided a rare glimpse into the opinions and feelings of an ordinary Yankeean enemy whom, they quickly discovered, it would be easy to regard as a friend.
This book contains the complete text of Henry Gusley's Civil War diary, expertly annotated and introduced by Edward Cotham. One of the few journals that have survived from U.S. Marines who served along the Gulf Coast, it records some of the most important naval campaigns of the Civil War, including the spectacular Union success at New Orleans and the embarrassing defeats at Galveston and Sabine Pass. It also offers an unmatched portrait of daily life aboard ship. Accompanying the diary entries are previously unpublished drawings by Daniel Nestell, a doctor who served in the same flotilla and eventually on the same ship as Gusley, which depict many of the locales and events that Gusley describes.
Together, Gusley's diary and Nestell's drawings are like picture postcards from the Civil Warvivid, literary, often moving dispatches from one of "Uncle Sam's nephews in the Gulf."
Customer Reviews:
The Southern Journey of a Civil War Marine.......2007-02-24
This is an excellent resource for learning about the life and duties of Marines during the Civil War. There are only a few existing personal accounts of Marines during that period. Gusley details a lot about daily shipboard life and the actions that he was involved in. Coupled with the drawings of the one of the doctors on board his ship, it makes for a good read for the history buff or the Civil War Marine or Navy re-enactor. As a former Marine and re-enactor, I highly recommend this book.
Yankee Marine Diary.......2006-11-05
As other reviews have pointed out, there are loads of Civil War diaries. What makes this unique is because it is by a Marine. The Marine forces were very small compared to the Army and Navy forces of both combatants. This was particularly interesting to me as some of his travels brought him along the Texas Gulf Coast, not very far from where I live. It is obvious from his writings that Marine duty with the Navy blockades in the South could be very boring at times. I enjoyed the book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent history on the 1849 founding of a great Texas city.......1999-11-09
This is an excellent history of Fort Worth, Texas. Founded in 1849 as an army outpost in what was then the western frontier of Texas. The soldiers were there to protect settlers. The book features original architectural drawings of what the original fort probably looked like. The illustrator researched the fort through the National Archives and other records and came up with artist's views of the frontier outpost. The accompanying text explains the history of the fort and how it grew into one of the country's great cities. This is a great "coffee table" book, and would appeal to anyone interested in the history of the old west.
