From the author: The second edition of the Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada by Gleason and Cronquist (1991) is the most recent and up-to-date taxonomic treatment of the flora of that region. Since no floristic summary of the Manual was included in the publication, a computer analysis of the taxonomic data of the Manual was performed in order to generate a floristic summary. Totals of 4285 species, 1091 genera, and 191 families were tabulated. The largest genus was Carex, with 230 species; the largest family was the Asteraceae, with 528 species. Comparisons made with earlier floras of the same region indicated small declines on the order of 10% for these taxonomic groups.

the definitive reference.......2002-07-19
this book is not for the novice trying to identify the tree is his or her backyard. It is the most complete, thorough, up to date, and expansive identification manual for vascular plants for the eastern side of north America: A large, heavy textbook with no pictures, full of complex scientific descriptions and nomenclature in dichotomous key format. If you don't know what that means, you most likely will not find this book user friendly. That being said, it is a wonderful book, providing answers where other high end, professional botanist volumes leave ambiguity or contradiction. Excellent, clear, easy to use. A must have for anyone seriously studying plants in this region from the undergraduate to the post graduate level.
The most complete manual for northeast US.......2000-08-13
If you know your plant terminology, and want to learn about the plants of the northeast US, this is the book to have. Unless you want to spend big bucks on your plant guides, however, you will have to trust your descriptive abilities, since there are no pictures (the illustrated companion is about $125). A very complete guide that can be applied across the area.
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable Resource for Plant Identification.......1999-11-29
This illustrated companion to the classic Gleason & Cronquist is a "must-have" for anyone who needs clear, concise line drawings to help understand fine distinctions between species. Although expensive, it's a terrific reference that will become a classic. You will use it often and you won't regret spending the money. Caution: it's a big volume and very heavy; don't plan on carrying it along in the field.

Guidebook review.......2006-11-10
We found the Malta Insideout City Guide to be very helpful to us for our recent short (4 day) visit to Malta. It provided highlights of things to see and do as well as helpful travel and lodging information all arranged in a useful manner. The maps were very helpful in making our way around the city and island. The size was very handy at the expense of the very small print.
Superb Guide To Malta In A Peculiar Format.......2006-06-01
I have traveled quite a bit and have used travel guides from many different companies, but I have just discovered the Insideout guides and I really like them. They are truly designed for use while in the area you are visiting, though they are also good for planning. The key to understanding these guides is to realize that they are full of features though very compact, and fit easily in a pocket or purse.
The Insideout guide to Malta has two unique popout maps, one of the island itself with a smaller map of St. Julian's Bay (which also includes Paceville, Is-Swieqi, and the road to San Gorg Lido and Saint George's Tower, the Ix-Xatt Ta' San Gorg;) the other popout map is of Valletta, Sliema, and Mdina, and has especially excellent depictions of historic landmarks such as various war memorials, the Maglio Gardens, Neptune's Courtyard, and the National Museum of Fine Arts. Inside the rear cover is a good (but small) map of Gozo and Comino (Ghawdex and Kemmuna) including such important features as the Pornskizillious Museum of Toys, the Folklore Museum, the Mgarr ix-Xini Tower, and the convenient heliport at Mgarr.
In total the book has 64 pages of information on Malta, all of which are well written and useful. Of course the interesting sights like the Blue Grotto, the Dingli Cliffs, and the amazing Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni (a huge 4,000 year old underground temple) are well represented, but this little guide also contains great information on restaurants, performing arts, sports, and retail shops, including information ranging from the popular Maltese clothing shop "Mango & Pull & Bear" which is known for excellent casual clothing at reasonable prices to the less well-known Ta' Xbiegi Craft Village, which, while housed in World War Two vintage Nissen huts, features beautiful lace, gold and silver filigree, and the ceramics for which Maltese artisans are so well known.
Adding to the appeal of this book is its clever binding. The spine of this book actually contains a small but useable magnetic compass to help with orientation on the ground, and a small pen which is very handy for taking notes (there is a spare page for notes near the rear of the book as well.) For useful and easily usable information at your fingertips, this is the one guide to Malta that any traveler should definitely take with them. I highly recommend this guidebook.

Book Description
In the Arctic, the inuksuk is a stone structure that acts as a messenger to passing travelers. Make Your Own Inuksuk provides gardeners and nature lovers with a myriad of ideas to express their own personal messages in meaningful locations of their own. Chapters include construction, choosing adhesives, selecting stones, wind and weather, communicating the message, and strength. The full-color book engages and stimulates with quotes from elders, facts on Inuit culture, the importance of inuksuk, and their significance today.
Book Description
The Inuksuk Book offers a fresh glimpse into the culture, customs, and ingenuity of the Inuit by examining the symbolic information revealed in the mysterious inuksuk. Found throughout the Far North, inuksuit are stone structures that act in the place of human beings to communicate knowledge essential for Arctic survival. Through the collective wisdom of Inuit elders and noted experts, archival photography, and the author's own exquisite silk paintings, the reader is introduced to the ten major types of structures and is shown how they have provided travelers with information on location, danger spots, food storage, hallowed land, and hunting grounds.

EXCITING ART shared by our INUIT NEIGHBORS.......2005-04-16
The towering 'INUKSUK' (ee-nook-sook) pictured on the cover of Mary Wallace's book introduces readers to a world of earth-bound 'signposts' in the arctic - - and MUCH MORE! In their varied forms the inuksuk may be intended as markers for caches of food, to advise hunters of directions, or to symbolize persons being memorialized. The last is an idea that could be used by students who want to follow the author's instructions for building a personal inuksuk. Another structure is shown serving as a road map to a traveler's next destination. It is not only a potential life-saver but makes a beautiful statement in the barren landscape.
Living in the Arctic means acquiring techniques for survival. Outsiders must acclimate themselves in a short time and this can be unsettling! For many decades the U.S. War Dept. funded studies in climatology, resulting in proper clothing & more nutritious feeding of troops. One more way in which we have benefited from the insights of our neighbors to the north.
"The Inuksuk Book" has many striking silk paintings with a gorgeous rainbow of colors that reflect the beauty of the 'Northern Lights' (Aurora Boralis). These inspire an admiration for the mystery of the far north. Contemporary photographs and those from earlier years also enhance the text. Teachers often expand a study unit to include Eskimo/Inuit art. How fortunate the young people who become acquainted with the figures beautifully sculpted from walrus tusks and soapstone. Amazing artistry is evident in works created during the long winters north of Hudson's Bay.
REVIEWER mcHAIKU marvels at the skills & imagination of the Inuit people and cheers author Mary Wallace for sharing.
Beautiful, Mesmerizing!.......2002-10-11
This gorgeously illustrated book is one of the most appealing books I have read about the Far North. It highlights the ingenuity of a people who live in a demanding environment.
One of the things about the book I really enjoyed was the use of the Inuit alphabet to caption the beautiful pictures. There is a dictionary of sounds and words in the back, which can be used for kids to write their own names in Inuit.
There is also a guide to making your own Inuksuk in the back.
Not just for children.......2000-09-03
While hiking in the Canadian Rockies, we saw inuksuk along the trails. Their beauty and the fact that people had expressed themselves by creating art out of rock, rather than defacing the area, added greatly to our enjoyment of the outings.
When I found the book "Inuksuk," I immediately purchased it. After reading it, I purchased four more copies. "Inuksuk" can be read and looked at from many angles. It will be a perfect gift for friends with "soul" and for children who I hope will grow up with an appreciation of nature and art.
Book Description
Illustrated by: Melanie Rose
Unique and as beautiful as a snowflake or footprint, an Inuksut (inNUKshuk,) is one of the stone figures that can be seen dotting the Canadian Artic region. Many made by ancient hands, the Inuksuit (inNUKsweet) purposes are varied, from earthly uses such as navigation and message centers to those of the spirit, as sites of reverence. Author Mike Ulmer explores the connectedness of all Artic life in his tale, The Gift of the Inuksut.
Author Mike Ulmer keeps an Inuksuk at home--it reminds him of the way the Inuit People of the North live a simple life and consume only what they need. His tale expresses this belief in a warm and simple manner that readers of all ages will appreciate and enjoy. Artist Melanie Rose's charming and lively oil paintings bring great variety and surprising bursts of color to this unique northern story.
Mike lives in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with his wife Agnes Bongers and their three daughters: Sadie, Hannah and Madalyn. When he is not learning about Inuksuk, Mike writes a sports column for the Toronto Sun newspaper. Among Mike's books are M is for Maple: A Canadian Alphabet and H is For Horse: An Equestrian Alphabet.
Melanie Rose lives in Mississauga, Canada with her son Liam, and their two cats, Mickey and Meesha. Melanie teamed up with Mike previously on M is for Maple: A Canadian Alphabet. She has also illustrated Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet and K is for Kick: A Soccer Alphabet. She is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art.
Customer Reviews:
We're not alone.......2005-07-22
This is the story of the origins of the Inuksuit, the stone people, that are very characteristic of the Inuit culture, as imagined by the author. It is a story of a little girl using her stone people to guide her father and brothers back home in a snowstorm. It is an introduction to the Inuit culture and beliefs. But I also take it as a very gentle reminder to all who read this book that we are just a small part of this world and we should appreciate what is available to us by living simple lives and using the gifts of this world wisely so that the generations to follow will also be able to use these wonderful resources. By gently reinforcing such positive ideas in our children's minds we can ensure a good future for all. The illustrations very effetctively portray the landscape and lifestyle of the Inuit people, they will draw the children's attention to this story and make it the more momorable. I commend Mike Ulmer and Melanie Rose for a job very well done.
By the way, the kids and I are planning to build an Inuksuk as our own reminder of what truly matters.
