Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Flowers.......2007-03-09

Spanish language version of an English language book that has been one of my favorites for years. It is a short, easily read story with profound implications for one's view of modern society and one's value system.

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully inspiring story.......1999-03-03

This book is a wonderful story on life, love and taking chances. Sometimes, in order to get somewhere, you have to let go of everything. This book is about everyone and the choices he or she is faced with.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful story of life, choices, taking chances, and love........1997-10-31

This is a powerful story of choices. We can choose to exist in our life, or we can choose to live our life. One path leads to playing it safe and just existing with the herd, the other path leads to wonder and growth and beauty. The plight of these caterpillars is the story of all of us who are afraid to take chances out of fear of the unknown. Ahhh, but for those brave enough to take that chance, what wonders await us. I am on my own personal growth path, and I am a counselor. This book is required reading for any of my clients who want to start living their life to the fullest.

    Book Description

Miles away from their home in El Salvador, Xochitl (Soh-cheel) and her family make a home in America. Xochitl misses her family’s small flower business and garden back home. By selling flowers on the street the Flores family begin to make friends with their new neighbors. But it is not until the family decides to start a nursery that Xochitl learns the value of community. Award-winning writer Jorge Argueta has crafted a moving story about a family’s determination to set down roots and about their child’s blooming in a new environment. Carl Angel’s artwork splendidly documents this quintessentially American immigration story.

                    Book Description

In 1992 Doug Preston and his family rode horseback across 400 miles of desert in Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. They were retracing the route of the Navajo deity Naayéé' neizghání, the Slayer of Alien Gods, on his quest to restore beauty and balance to the Earth. More than a travelogue, Preston's account of the journey is a tale of two cultures meeting in a sacred land.

The engaging account of a familyÂ's experience in tracing the path of the Navajo creation story in the Four Corners area.

5 out of 5 stars Talking to the Ground.......2007-01-17

As a native of New Mexico I found this book wonderful. I live with a Navajo who was raised very traditionally and he found the book wonderful also. Douglas Preston is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting adventure in the Navajo Nation.......2006-03-10

It helps immensely to have travelled to the Navajo Nation when reading this story. I found that I had minor interest in the developing family story, compared to the lore and myth of the SW Native Americans. If you've travelled to the SW and are familiar with horses, you'll love this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars scholastic reality.......2006-02-24

It's a pleasure to enjoy the author's background studies (dry) and then his reality (with large hail stones) on a search that leads to more respect... for everything.
Reading this book caused me to yearn for some concrete search of my own, and that is the dream this book passes along. It was given to me as someone else's favorite book. I can see why. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Blending the Physical and the Myth.......2000-09-27

A wonderful read, both encouraging and disheartening, with some real family values thrown in. A graphic, first-hand description of the way things were and are, and might be. Mr. Preston provides many enduring messages about the sanctity of life and living that the Bilagaana have nearly completely lost in our rush of subservience to the technology god.

5 out of 5 stars a must-read for anyone interested in American culture.......1999-10-17

This book and its predecessor, Cities of Gold, chronicle the amazing, arduous, foolhardy, inspired journeys of a "yankee" in search of the traces of cultures his own people have nearly annihilated. Unlike many memoirists, Preston doesn't shrink from chronicling his own failures and misjudgments, and that's what makes him so accessible to the people he meets along the way, and to the reader him or herself. Most of us will probably never have the guts to make these journeys or get to know all these people - that's what makes this book such a radical act of anti-tourism. Above all it's a poignant homage to "the people." (They know who they are!) If you're a horse person, a traveler to the southwest, or if you're just interested in the question "what is American?" you have to read these books now. And don't miss the great story about the skinwalkers - it's enough to keep you cold in July.

I live in Old Louisville and David Domine gives not only ghost stories, but what appears to be some researched history for this area which I found very interesting. One night when driving past the First Church of Christ, Scientist, I looked up at the stairs and could have sworn I saw "The Lady on the Stairs". I tried to pull over, but because of the traffic and the fact that it is a one-way street, by the time I got back around, she was gone. I loved the book and also read the next book, Phantoms of Old Louisville. I am awaiting the next book that I've heard rumor of.

Ghosts of Old Louisville by David Domine presents the haunted past of America's largest Victorian neighborhood in an entertaining and informative format. His unopinionated, objective way of fleshing out the stories of those residents who haven't quite yet vacated their former abodes in the magnificent historic preservation district known as Old Louisville makes this a unique and spellbinding collection of true ghost stories. When so many writers of ghost stories today simply rehash stories that have been around for generations, Domine has taken it upon himself to track down dozens of stories of true cases of hauntings in his adopted neighborhood that have previously remained hidden. What I like most about this book is the fact that the author kept my attention throughout the entire book. Each story is fascinating because of the paranormal aspect to it, but also because it brings in a large amount of local history, appetizing bits of architecture and colorful characters. Although I have never been to Old Louisville before, I feel as if I know this area intimately, and I cannot wait to 'return' to it. Domine includes a chapter about the interesting haunting in his own home, the Widmer House, which was built around 1895. This lends an extra bit of credibility to the book and adds a nice personal touch as well. If you like history and ghost stories, you can rest assured that this book will satisfy your cravings for both. The good news is that this book is only the first in a series of five that will some day document the extensive haunted history of Old Louisville. Volume II, Phantoms of Old Louisville: Ghostly Tales from America's Most Haunted Neighborhood, carries on the tradition of ghosty goings-on in this unique area and is just as captivating as the first.

In "Phantoms of Old Louisville: Ghostly Tales from America's Most Haunted Neighborhood," Kentucky Author David Dominé conducts a literary stroll through a picturesque Victorian neighborhood where unexplained occurrences abound in grand old homes behind fortress-like walls. He adroitly pulls the reader along on a tour of hidden balconies and secret passage ways while describing architectural facets that make each dwelling unique. Along with fascinating stories and first-hand accounts from home owners and residents, Dominé offers pictures of the alleged haunts to help readers visualize spooks and phantoms as he unfolds his tales of lost spirits and forlorn phantoms. Old Louisville, the third largest historic preservation district in the nation, boasts hundreds and hundreds of opulent Victorian mansions, each of them with a story, and David Dominé brings them to life and takes the reader inside on a sumptuous visual foray. In "Phantoms of Old Louisville: Ghostly Tales from America's Most Haunted Neighborhood," guests are urged to make themselves comfortable and feel at home, but right as they settle in, the author pulls the rug out from under them and defies rational explanation of the would-be paranormal occurrences in his stories. Sure to please both history buffs and ghost story enthusiasts alike, this intriguing collection of supernatural tales peppered with lavish architecture, haunting history and colorful characters makes it a perfect read any time of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Read.......2007-05-22

I recently moved to Old Louisville and knowing nothing about the area, read the first book by David Domine, Ghosts of Old Louisville. I was sorry when the book ended and started immediately on the second book, Phantoms of Old Louisville. I also took the Ghost Tour of Old Louisville, which was hosted by David Domine himself, last Friday night. I am so glad that he did write about these old homes and the area, otherwise I would not have known any history or folklore to accompany me here, on my move from Los Angeles to Old Louisville this last January. He allowed those of us on his tour into his wonderful home, which was magnificent. I could see the actual place where one of the purported hauntings happened and it was decorated and restored beautifully which made it an extra bonus. These books have given me a perspective on this area that I really would not have had if they weren't available. I am so waiting for October and the "haunting" season to begin. Another aside, I still don't know if I really believe in "ghosts", however, when reading these books late at night, I found myself having to put them down, and listening very closely to the sounds of my own Old Louisville home, and sometimes, I couldn't start reading again until the next day.....just too many chills and possibly a wild imagination at work. I found these books to be wonderful reads, never dragging, held my attention, and I now use them for reference when looking at the places and events described.

5 out of 5 stars Phantoms of Old Louisvile is a great read!.......2007-04-08

Phantoms of Old Louisville is the second in David Domine's fascinating collection of authentic ghost stories from the largest Victorian neighborhood in the country. You can read this one first or you can read Ghosts of Old Louisville first, it doesn't matter because each book reads well by itself. This one, like the first, is a great collection of stories dealing with reportedly haunted locations in the area known as Old Louisville. But, don't worry if you're not from Kentucky. These stories are fascinating no matter where you come from. If you love ghost stories, as I do, you will love this book. Each chapter combines equal parts supernatural events with local history and wonderful architecture. The author makes the neighborhood come to life and draws the reader in on a fascinating journey to the past. The level of writing is excellent, and the only thing that surpasses it is the unbelievable degree of storytelling involved. Although it is a work of creative non-fiction, it has a novelist's flare about it. This, like the first, is a book that will keep you up all night till you have finished it early the next morning. I cannot wait for volume III! Thanks to the author for an entertaining and informative read!

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A WORTHY FOLLOW UP TO GHOSTS OF OLD LOUISVILLE.......2006-11-03

In his latest book, Phantoms of Old Louisville: Ghostly Tales from America's Most Haunted Neighborhood, David Domine does an admirable job following up on the chills and thrills of last year's bestselling Ghosts of Old Louisville: True Stories of Hauntings in America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood. In this sequel, Domine has managed to unearth even more tales of the dearly departed in the grandest Victorian neighborhood in the country, and he presents them to the reader with the same engaging prose and mouth-watering descriptions he employed in his first book. And, as before, he has managed to capture a distinct feel for the neighborhood he loves so much, and he successfully uses it to create a mood piece that transports the reader back to a time when spirits from Beyond looked on as bustled ladies served tea in elegant front parlors, servants gathered for modest meals in the back kitchen and the domestic arts (unlike today) occupied a hallowed spot in American households.

I look forward to his next book and recommend this one to all who enjoy a good ghost story with added architectural tidbits and lots of local flavor.

5 out of 5 stars Domine delivers with "Phantoms".......2006-10-18

David Domine follows up on last year's "Ghosts of Old Louisville" with this year's just-as-delightful "Phantoms of Old Louisville".

Old Louisville has a rich Victorian history, complete with its own haunted past. Domine brings both of these facets together in a wonderful marriage thanks to his detailed descriptions and narrative skill. Skeptics and "ghost hunters" alike can appreciate the ghostly tales Domine has uncovered in his unopinionated style, and decide for themselves how true these accounts seem to be.

In his writing process Domine has obviously worked hard at doing extensive research, conducting interviews, and verifying stories and alleged "facts" of supernatural occurances to make the chapters as in-depth and fleshed-out as they are (for an added touch, the introductory and afterword sections come penned from Halloween night of the previous year).

The stories he presents to readers are greatly interesting, and some induce chills and definite eerieness. The backgrounds of some of the spirits here range from amusing to melancholy, and the types of supernatural activity reported are just as varied. Not only do we learn of the supernatural, though---all along the way Domine knowledgably points out architectural features of various grand Victorian mansions and old public buildings, giving that feeling of actually being taken back to this bygone era for a brief period. He has certainly studied his Louisville history, too, as is evidenced by his sharing of interesting facts from Old Louisville's true heyday.

Sprinkled throughout the book are some black and white photographs of the different locales. They add a little visual flavor to each of the intriguing accounts. Also, in the front of the volume is a map of the general area with a location key for those readers who want to venture to Old Louisville and visit some of these locations for themselves.

For a splendid read---especially with Halloween coming on in autumn---definitely check out Domine's "Phantoms of Old Louisville", and its predecessor, "Ghosts of Old Louisville". They are fascinating examples of Victorian architecture, city history, and, most importantly for such works, tales merging this world with that of the spirits.

                    Happy reading.

                    3 out of 5 stars hauntingly weird.......2006-03-19

Informative, I like his books. Most of the stories I have read in other books but some I have not. I like that he writes about the history behind the haunts, not just tell about the hauntings.

2 out of 5 stars Too much history.. not enough ghost info.. BAD editing.......2006-01-29

This has got to Be the most annoying book to read.. there is at least one error in spelling or the way a sentence is written on EACH page. Makes the flow of reading very difficult.

I am half way through this and am bored. WAY TOO MUCH historical facts and not even close to nearly enough about the actual haunting. Most stories go for 2-3 pages of history then ONE PARAGRAPH with maybe two sentences about the haunting.

NOT worth reading. I gave it a 2 simply for interesting pictures.

I must disagree with one review regarding "Beyond the Grave." One reviewer found it highly irritating that the editors did not discover and/or correct some occurring typos in Troy Taylor's book. Petty, overlooked accidents do happen, such as they are. Enjoy Mr. Taylor's offerings. A true page turner!

3 out of 5 stars Great ghost stories, but poorly edited!.......2002-10-22

On the plus side, this book was unique, highly interesting, well researched, and very scary! The author has assembled a large collection of very frightening episodes of hauntings that take place in spooky old graveyards all across America. As an avid reader of true ghost stories, I was impressed with the fact that Mr. Taylor had included so many stories in this book that I had never heard of before and for me, that is always a plus.

On the negative side, this book would have received a much higher rating from me if it had not been so badly edited! Someone did an extremely poor job of proof reading and editing prior to allowing the book to be published, a fact that I personally find to be very irritating. (I found a large amount of typos and misprints, starting with the introduction and all the way through to the end of the book). Hopefully this will be remedied in future editions of what could have been an almost perfect read.

The Haunted Whaley House original edition printed several years ago is no longer available. This review is for the newest edition entitled "The Haunted Whaley House II" not yet listed in Amazon.com. I bought this book, along with tickets to the Whaley House in San Diego last month. The new expanded version has more up-to-date stories and photographs than the original and contains a more detailed history of the house. There are lots of photos and anecdotes to keep you awake at night. I really enjoyed this book and would have given it five stars if the authors had hired someone to proofread. Many sentences and paragraphs end in the middle and the text is rife with typos and grammatical errors. Still, it is a fascinating book and a must read for ghost story lovers.
